DraftKings PGA Millionaire Course Breakdown: Rocket Mortgage Classic

DraftKings is back with its fourth consecutive PGA Millionaire Maker. This week the Tour returns to Detroit Golf Club for the Rocket Mortgage Classic.

It’s only the second year that Detroit Golf Club has hosted a PGA Tour event. This week’s field won’t be as strong as what we’ve seen in previous weeks, but it will be stronger than what we saw here a year ago.

Follow along as we breakdown the course and look at strategies for this week’s DraftKings PGA Millionaire Maker for the Rocket Mortgage Classic at Detroit Golf Club. For more DFS tips from RotoGrinders’ team of PGA DFS experts, sign up for RotoGrinders Premium.

Now let’s start our free Detroit Golf Club course breakdown for the Rocket Mortgage Classic.

Detroit Golf Club Course Breakdown: Rocket Mortgage Classic

Golfers finally get to attack four par 5s for the first time since the PGA returned. The Donald Ross-designed course stretches over 7,344 yards, and it hopes to play tougher than its -5 cut line in 2019.

In its PGA Tour debut, Nate Lashley dominated Detroit Golf Club, shooting 26-under for the tournament and winning by a whopping six strokes. Even more impressive than his birdie-filled scorecards? Lashley entered the tournament late as an alternate. At some sportsbooks, you couldn’t even find Lashley on the betting board.

The leaderboard at the inaugural Rocket Mortgage Classic was mostly a product of strokes gained putting. The course played easy tee-to-green, despite its tree-lined fairways. Not only are the fairways fairly wide, but the rough wasn’t penal a year ago.

While the fairways haven’t gotten thinner, tournament organizers have tried to make Detroit Golf Club a bit more challenging this go-around. They have grown out the rough four inches, which should help accurate drivers of the ball more than anything.

Ultimately, we want to look at strokes gained approach, target good ball-striker, and golfers who typically have a good feel on the greens. Here’s a few “course fit” plays I like for this week’s DraftKings PGA Millionaire Maker.

Rocket Mortgage Classic Course Fit Plays

Webb Simpson

Price: $11,000

All of the talk is about Bryson DeChambeau, leaving Webb Simpson flying slightly below the radar at $11,000. DeChambeau has been more than impressive; he hasn’t finished outside of the top 10 since February. But outside of a missed cut in his first tournament back Simpson hasn’t been too shabby either. Simpson bounced back strong, winning his second tournament of the year two weeks ago. The former U.S. Open winner skipped the Travelers due to COVID-19 precautions, but he’s back in Detroit. One reason I like Simpson is in the chance Detroit Golf Club’s rough turns out more penal than expected. Simpson is driving the ball with accuracy. He hit 68% of fairways at the Heritage and 75% when he missed the cut at Colonial. Aside from a terrible performance at the WGC Mexico, Simpson had four straight tournaments where he hit at least 70% of fairways. DeChambeau has turned himself into the best driver on Tour but he isn’t finding the short stuff quite like Simpson. If Simpson can have hits another 70+% of fairways while DeChambeau finds trouble a few times, that might be all we need to get a better finish from the lower-owned play.

Doc Redman

Price: $8,500

Redman is playing well, and oddsmakers have taken notice. A week ago he was 250-1. His odds to win the Rocket Mortgage Classic? As short as 33-1. It’s a weaker field, of course, but that’s not all oddsmakers are considering. Redman has made all three cuts since the PGA Tour resumed play, progressing each week with finishes of 58th, 21st, and most recently 11th. During that span, he’s fourth in strokes-gained ball-striking and first in strokes gained approach relative this week’s field. While we hardly have any course history from Detroit Golf Club to put to use, Redman didn’t have a problem with this course in 2019. His second-place finish at the Rocket Mortgage classic is still his best PGA Tour finish to date. Moreover, Redman enters this week playing better than he did this time last year.

Wesley Bryan

Price: $6,500

Recovering from a wrist injury at the time, Wesley Bryan missed out on the first Rocket Mortgage Classic at Detroit Golf Club. Bryan is less than stellar off the tee, but his recent approach numbers are tough to ignore. He gained 9.2 strokes approach last week, a stroke more than anyone else. If he continues to show that kind of precision and can match it with some driving accuracy and a good putting week, Bryan will more than pay off this cheap price tag. If you’re needing a salary saver, Bryan is a great option.
