Searching for a Specialist: Alfred Dunhill Links

rotogrinders_user_22704

Welcome back to another specialist search. After an amazing Ryder Cup last week, we now head across the pond for some Euro Tour action. The PGA TOUR will kick off the new season next week with the Safeway Open so we’ll be back to normal shortly.

The event this week is the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship. It’s basically the Pebble Beach Pro-Am for the European Tour. Celebrities will be playing, the courses will rotate over the first three rounds, and the cut doesn’t come until after that 54-hole mark.

For our specialist search we will have a look at performance on European soil, Bentgrass Greens, Links-Style Courses, Par 72s, and finish up with Easy Course performance.

Here we go…

European Continent

This is a unique angle to the European Tour since on the PGA TOUR large majority of the events are held in the United States.

On the Euro Tour, they co-sanction events in South Africa and Asia, so you run into the situation where some golfers thrive in those events but struggle to find their footing when they tee it up in Europe against stronger fields. We want to find the opposite of that.

The Top 10 European Continent Specialists are:

Alex Noren (3.019 sg:European Continent vs. 1.919 sg:total)
Soren Kjeldsen (2.461 sg:European Continent vs. 1.492 sg:total)
James Morrison (1.691 sg:European Continent vs. 0.959 sg:total)
Matthew Fitzpatrick (2.031 sg:European Continent vs. 1.363 sg:total)
Shane Lowry (1.957 sg:European Continent vs. 1.31 sg:total)
Lee Westwood (1.994 sg:European Continent vs. 1.373 sg:total)
Tyrrell Hatton (1.981 sg:European Continent vs. 1.367 sg:total)
Rikard Karlberg (1.724 sg:European Continent vs. 1.122 sg:total)
Fabrizio Zanotti (1.456 sg:European Continent vs. 0.881 sg:total)
Matteo Manassero (0.523 sg:European Continent vs. -0.024 sg:total)

Right away we see plenty of cream rising to the top.

Alex Noren has a sparkling record in Europe over the last two years. In 12 starts, he’s finished eighth or better in half of them, including THREE wins. I would say he feels comfortable on European soil.

Matthew Fitzpatrick also plays well near his home base. Over his last 23 starts in Europe, he’s won twice and found seven more top 10s to go along with the victories. After a disappointing Ryder Cup debut, the Englishman will look to get back on track right away. More on him later, though.

On the opposite side of the spectrum we have Haydn Porteous, George Coetzee, and Brett Rumford. All three lose more than a stroke per round off their baseline when they play on European soil.

Bentgrass Greens

This week we have three different courses (all links) so that means bent/fescue mixtures on the greens.

The Top 10 Bentgrass Specialists remaining:

Soren Kjeldsen (2.275 sg:bentgrass vs. 1.492 sg:total)
Lee Westwood (1.953 sg:bentgrass vs. 1.373 sg:total)
Matthew Fitzpatrick (1.943 sg:bentgrass vs. 1.363 sg:total)
Simon Khan (0.393 sg:bentgrass vs. -0.144 sg:total)
Fabrizio Zanotti (1.408 sg:bentgrass vs. 0.881 sg:total)
Robert Karlsson (0.724 sg:bentgrass vs. 0.218 sg:total)
Rikard Karlberg (1.616 sg:bentgrass vs. 1.122 sg:total)
Martin Kaymer (2.361 sg:bentgrass vs. 1.881 sg:total)
Romain Wattel (1.387 sg:bentgrass vs. 0.933 sg:total)
Eddie Pepperell (0.862 sg:bentgrass vs. 0.422 sg:total)

Fabrizio Zanotti has top 25s in 13 of his last 28 on bentgrass. That 46% rate is 12th best in the field while his baseline top-25 rate of 33% is only 39th best in the field. He definitely likes these putting surfaces.

Soren Kjeldsen is another name that gets a boost on bentgrass. He did withdraw in his last event (but it was very largely influenced by weather). Unless we hear something about an injury, I’m going to assume the Dane is good to go this week.

You should notice that we only lose three golfers here since events in Europe are nearly always on bentgrass greens, so the two angles correlate quite a bit.

Links-Style Layouts

All three tracks this week are links courses. We are at the home of Links golf so that makes sense.

There are certain attributes such as ball flight that can be indicative of a good links golfer but more often than not it comes down to experience on similar courses growing up.

If a golfer grew up in Great Britain or Ireland, I’m going to assume they are well-suited to links layouts until they prove otherwise. For golfers that come from other regions, I will assume they are not suited to links golf, until they prove otherwise.

The Top 10 Links Specialists remaining are:

Oliver Wilson (1.033 sg:links vs. -1.202 sg:total)
Matteo Manassero (1.248 sg:links vs. -0.024 sg:total)
Stephen Gallacher (1.289 sg:links vs. 0.371 sg:total)
Edoardo Molinari (1.075 sg:links vs. 0.171 sg:total)
Eddie Pepperell (1.243 sg:links vs. 0.422 sg:total)
Mikko Ilonen (1.395 sg:links vs. 0.621 sg:total)
Graeme McDowell (1.744 sg:links vs. 1.047 sg:total)
Magnus A. Carlsson (1.524 sg:links vs. 0.829 sg:total)
Richie Ramsay (1.735 sg:links vs. 1.047 sg:total)
Felipe Aguilar (1.284 sg:links vs. 0.61 sg:total)

Graeme McDowell is a name that even a lot of casual golf fans will know is a links specialist. It’s good to see the numbers also support the eye test here.

Danny Willett is an interesting case here. He owns a runner-up and fifth-place finish at this event (2010, 2012) but more recently he’s been very average on links layouts. His last 11 starts on Links courses have yielded eight finishes outside the top 35. My first instinct was to expect a bounce back after his dreadful Ryder Cup debut but now I will proceed with caution.

I think the same goes for Fitzpatrick. We saw earlier he was pretty solid in Europe, but he’s finished 30th or worse in eight of his last nine starts on links layouts. That includes five missed cuts. Despite growing up in England, his early returns show him ill-suited for links-style golf.

Par 72 Courses

With all three courses playing to par 72s, this is an easy angle to look at.

The courses are set up rather easy, to make it a bit easier on the amateurs this week. That means plenty of easy par 5s this week, so DraftKings scoring should definitely be on the high side this week.

The Top 10 Par 72 Specialists remaining are:

Graeme McDowell (1.543 sg:par72 vs. 1.047 sg:total)
Matteo Manassero (0.456 sg:par72 vs. -0.024 sg:total)
Felipe Aguilar (1.059 sg:par72 vs. 0.61 sg:total)
Shane Lowry (1.72 sg:par72 vs. 1.31 sg:total)
Magnus A. Carlsson (1.224 sg:par72 vs. 0.829 sg:total)
Richie Ramsay (1.423 sg:par72 vs. 1.047 sg:total)
Niclas Fasth (0.416 sg:par72 vs. 0.068 sg:total)
Stephen Gallacher (0.7 sg:par72 vs. 0.371 sg:total)
Michael Hoey (0.33 sg:par72 vs. 0.026 sg:total)
Tyrrell Hatton (1.655 sg:par72 vs. 1.367 sg:total)

G-Mac is a bit surprising here since he is the definition of fairways-and-greens golf but the Euro Tour numbers suggest he doesn’t mind par 72 setups.

Easy Courses

Like I mentioned before, this event sets up the courses on the easier side to cater to the amateurs in the field.

In some ways that brings in more randomness because hard courses generally bring out the elite golfers. At the same time, there are some great golfers that just prefer easy setups.

We lose 25 of the 31 remaining golfers at this stage. Check the table at the bottom to see who those golfers were.

Baseline Performance

If we look at our recent-form filter, we see which golfers have been losing strokes to the field over the past 10 week of stroke-play events. So we can exclude them:

Eddie Pepperell
Stephen Gallacher
Michael Hoey

Pepperell should be considered GPP only given his recent form. His last five read like this: DQ-MC-MC-MC-MC. Ouch! Hoey’s recent form is just as poor.

Gallacher is also finding no success lately. In fact he owns just one top 25 in all of the 2016 calendar year. Other than that, this week sets up great for the 41-year-old Scotsman. He’s also a past winner at this event (2004) so don’t be afraid to give him a chance if you’re making multiple lineups this week.

The Specialists

Shane Lowry
Tommy Fleetwood
Oliver Fisher

shane-lowry-300x200

Our specialist this week is Shane Lowry.

The Irishman is well-known for his prowess on links layouts. Other than his runner-up at the U.S. Open, his summer was really quiet. Perhaps he was putting pressure on himself to make a push at the Ryder Cup team. Now that it’s behind him, let’s hope he can get back on the podium this week. It’s the perfect week to get back on track.

Next is Tommy Fleetwood who was looking lost just a few months ago. He’s regained form and now he’s back at one of his favorite events. In five starts here, he’s collected four top 15s!

Oliver Fisher is another Englishman that fits the bill this week. He also arrives with top 30s in four of his last seven starts. Not too shabby. His track record at this event is nothing to write home about though, with just one top 25 since 2007, in nine tries. He should be a great fit this week, but I wouldn’t go overboard on him based on his past results here.

The Anti-Specialists

There are no golfers this week that find themselves negative in all five categories!

There are four golfers that have don’t have any positives though, and they are Rhys Davies, Ben Evans, Jin Jeong, and Soomin Lee. I would probably avoid all four of them this week.

Best of luck everyone!

Below is a table with the full specialist data. Any fields with a 0 in them mean the sample size is not large enough. There is a minimum of 25 rounds to qualify for each angle.

The SG:Total column is a baseline performance measure (since 2015),

Form is the strokes gained per round over the last 10 weeks and all the other columns will show you their performance for that angle (per round) in comparison to the baseline strokes gained with positive numbers being a good thing.

Josh Culp (futureoffantasy)

Josh didn’t own a set of golf clubs until after college but his love for the game now grows exponentially. He uses in-depth statistical analysis while trying to avoid the landmines that come with using traditional, outdated PGA stats. He can be found elsewhere writing for Rotoworld and Future of Fantasy. He can be found on twitter @futureoffantasy.
