Searching for a Specialist: Arnold Palmer Invitational

Article Image

Welcome to this week’s specialist search.

First let’s recap last week. On second thought, maybe we shouldn’t. Just kidding, but man was last week awful for the specialist approach. First, our main man Kevin Na WDs from the pro-am as he was fighting illness from Mexico the week before. It’s impossible to say whether he was still feeling the effects on Thursday and Friday, but he sure played like it. Ryan Moore and Kuchar tried to save the day with top 25s but the damage was already done.

I’m not sure I’ve ever been so baffled by a leaderboard as I was last week. Hopefully, that’s a small blip on the radar as we bounce back at this week’s Arnold Palmer Invitational.

The key areas I’m looking at this week are Florida Courses, Less-than-Driver Courses, Fast Greens, Par 72 Tracks, and Long Courses.

Here we go …

Florida Courses

While the green surfaces this week are bermudagrass, making it a logical angle, I’ve instead decided to kill two birds with one golf ball.

Looking at Florida specialists will encapsulate a lot of the value we’d get from bermuda specialists but it also picks up on the intangibles like the ability to avoid water hazards and play out of bunkers, which are always plentiful in the Sunshine State.

The Top 10 Florida Specialists are:

Matt Every (0.35 sg:florida vs. -0.486 sg:total)
David Hearn (1.653 sg:florida vs. 0.928 sg:total)
Morgan Hoffmann (1.231 sg:florida vs. 0.535 sg:total)
Sean O’Hair (1.355 sg:florida vs. 0.797 sg:total)
Kevin Na (2.224 sg:florida vs. 1.686 sg:total)
Ben Martin (1.199 sg:florida vs. 0.711 sg:total)
Derek Fathauer (0.914 sg:florida vs. 0.432 sg:total)
Francesco Molinari (2.121 sg:florida vs. 1.687 sg:total)
Vijay Singh (0.943 sg:florida vs. 0.545 sg:total)
Danny Lee (1.346 sg:florida vs. 0.955 sg:total)

It’s no surprise to see Matt Every on the list. When your only two wins come in your home state, it’s easy to become a specialist.

Sean O’Hair is an interesting name here, as he boasts a long and steady track record at Bay Hill, but he’s questionable with a neck injury after WDing last week.

Less-than-Driver Courses

Since 2010, the field averages just 277 yards in distance of all drives at Bay Hill Club and Lodge.

Dialing in deeper, we see four specific holes that average less than 270 off the tee (Nos. 5, 10, 11, and 13). These are clear less-than-driver holes, while the wind for the day will dictate some of the other tee decisions.

There are still some holes where you can grip it and rip it, but losing the distance advantage on 40% of the par 4s puts the shorter hitters back on an even playing field.

The 10 Less-than-Driver Specialists:

Sam Saunders (0.787 sg:less-than-driver vs. 0.029 sg:total)
Kevin Na (2.275 sg:less-than-driver vs. 1.686 sg:total)
Morgan Hoffmann (1.101 sg:less-than-driver vs. 0.535 sg:total)
Jamie Lovemark (1.426 sg:less-than-driver vs. 0.871 sg:total)
Ben Martin (1.25 sg:less-than-driver vs. 0.711 sg:total)
Matt Every (0.037 sg:less-than-driver vs. -0.486 sg:total)
Anirban Lahiri (1.352 sg:less-than-driver vs. 0.858 sg:total)
Cameron Smith (1.184 sg:less-than-driver vs. 0.755 sg:total)
Scott Brown (1.125 sg:less-than-driver vs. 0.703 sg:total)
Steve Wheatcroft (0.786 sg:less-than-driver vs. 0.366 sg:total)

How about that list topper!? The Grandson of Arnie, Sam Saunders. It would be a tremendous story if he found a way to contend this week. The less-than-driver portion of the course fit works in his favor.

Second on the list is our lineup killer from last week. Na laid a stinker at last week’s Valspar, another less-than-driver layout. Long term, he’s still tremendous on these type of tracks.

I usually eliminate Tony Finau at the bermuda portion of this article, but this week he gets the boot here. Despite him playing well last week on bermuda, in Florida, on a less-than-driver course, the long-term stats are just not in his favor. It’s a good week, in my opinion, to fade again. Especially if you think he’ll be popular this week.

Fast Greens

When Arnie tinkered with this layout and set it up for his event, he claimed he wanted it to be like Augusta on and around the greens.

There are run-off areas around the greens just like Augusta and they get these puppies running at 12-to-12.5 on the stimp, most years. Of course it’s impossible to clone the greens at Augusta, but golfers that like the quick speeds should be in for a good week.

The Top 10 Fast Green Specialists:

Geoff Ogilvy (1.263 sg:fast greens vs. 0.429 sg:total)
Boo Weekley (1.196 sg:fast greens vs. 0.426 sg:total)
Roberto Castro (1.294 sg:fast greens vs. 0.579 sg:total)
Matt Every (0.146 sg:fast greens vs. -0.486 sg:total)
Derek Fathauer (1.033 sg:fast greens vs. 0.432 sg:total)
Retief Goosen (1.135 sg:fast greens vs. 0.621 sg:total)
Jamie Lovemark (1.383 sg:fast greens vs. 0.871 sg:total)
Billy Hurley III (1.166 sg:fast greens vs. 0.675 sg:total)
Greg Chalmers (0.36 sg:fast greens vs. -0.121 sg:total)
Scott Brown (1.14 sg:fast greens vs. 0.703 sg:total)

This list is largely populated with great putters but also populated with low-baseline golfers. While good putters can catch fire on fast greens if they’re running true, elite ball-strikers also take a liking to fast greens because they can stick it much closer to the hole than the field. That reduces the chance of three-putting in most cases.

The top 5 golfers who are positive on fast greens but also 1+ in the Baseline SGT department are Jason Kokrak, Paul Casey, Zach Johnson, Billy Horschel, and Kevin Chappell.

Par 72 Courses

When there are four par 5s on the docket, we have to give proper weighting to the par-5 scorers.

Looking at overall performance on par 72 is a great way to see who likes the additional par 5s.

The 10 Par 72 Specialists:

Thorbjorn Olesen (1.205 sg:par72 vs. 0.319 sg:total)
John Daly (-0.53 sg:par72 vs. -1.151 sg:total)
Patton Kizzire (1.272 sg:par72 vs. 0.722 sg:total)
Smylie Kaufman (1.091 sg:par72 vs. 0.659 sg:total)
Matthew Fitzpatrick (1.576 sg:par72 vs. 1.203 sg:total)
Danny Willett (1.769 sg:par72 vs. 1.401 sg:total)
Marc Leishman (1.853 sg:par72 vs. 1.495 sg:total)
Brandon Hagy (0.842 sg:par72 vs. 0.515 sg:total)
Patrick Rodgers (1.041 sg:par72 vs. 0.742 sg:total)
Roberto Castro (0.87 sg:par72 vs. 0.579 sg:total)

The Grade 1 Starter Kit for par-72 play is to be long off the tee. We see a lot of that on the list above. Another route is to be a great course manager and tremendous with a wedge in your hand.

Who has the most top 25s on par 72 courses since 2014? That would be Hideki Matsuyama with 22. Rory McIlroy (21) and Justin Rose (20) are right behind him.

Long Courses

We just talked about length being helpful on par 72 courses, and that length also helps when the courses stretches out past 7,400 yards.

What a unique course we have this week. The short hitters are brought into play with a few of the holes forcing you to club down, but the bombers will be able to attack the par 5s. Perhaps a mix of both short hitters and bombers is the route to go this week.

The 10 Long Course Specialists:

Danny Willett (2.007 sg:long vs. 1.401 sg:total)
Ernie Els (1.086 sg:long vs. 0.524 sg:total)
Brandt Snedeker (2.112 sg:long vs. 1.602 sg:total)
Kyle Reifers (1.143 sg:long vs. 0.681 sg:total)
Patrick Rodgers (1.188 sg:long vs. 0.742 sg:total)
Charley Hoffman (1.689 sg:long vs. 1.246 sg:total)
Smylie Kaufman (1.091 sg:long vs. 0.659 sg:total)
Trevor Immelman (-0.215 sg:long vs. -0.634 sg:total)
Matt Every (-0.097 sg:long vs. -0.486 sg:total)
Patton Kizzire (1.093 sg:long vs. 0.722 sg:total)

Willett cracks the top 10 for the second straight angle. On paper, this is a great layout for the Englishman, and he has a Green Jacket to his name, so we know the fast greens won’t bother him. However, his form is the main concern.

The Specialists

Jamie Lovemark
Kevin Na
Lucas Glover
Ian Poulter

Article Image

Our specialist this week is Jamie Lovemark!

The Jupiter, Florida, resident missed the cut in his 2010 API debut but he returned last year to post a T6. It’s a good fit on paper since he has the length to attack the par 5s, he has the short game to avoid the big numbers, and he doesn’t mind clubbing down. His best finish on TOUR came at last year’s Zurich Classic which is another course that is long on the scorecard but Pete Dye forces driver out of your hands throughout that course, as well.

Second on the list is Kevin Na, returning for the second straight week. This time, he’s playing second fiddle to Lovemark, so maybe he’ll show up this time. His track record at Bay Hill is stellar with top 15s in five of his last six visits. Let’s just hope the illness is completely behind him now.

Next we have Lucas Glover who would have made the “GPP-only” list based on Baseline SGT alone, but the fact that his form is 2x the field average, gives him a pass. You never want to rely on Glover’s putter, but you don’t want to make sure it’s bermuda the weeks that you do own him.

Finally, we have local resident Ian Poulter. He has four starts remaining on his Major Medical Extension, needing just $177K to meet the terms. I think a home game that fits on paper would be a great spot to earn that amount all at once.

The Anti-Specialists

Looking for the opposite of our specialists, these golfers have negative numbers in all five angles!

Martin Laird
Brian Harman
Hudson Swafford

Martin Laird is a past champ here which goes to show that course history doesn’t affect course fit all that much. Other than his win, he’s finished outside the top 30 in his six other API starts.

The last two are both Georgia Bulldogs, but haven’t fared so hot just south of the GA border.

Best of luck everyone!

Below is a table with the full specialist data. Any fields with a 0 in them mean the sample size is not large enough. There is a minimum of 25 rounds to qualify for each angle.

Josh Culp (futureoffantasy)

Josh didn’t own a set of golf clubs until after college but his love for the game now grows exponentially. He uses in-depth statistical analysis while trying to avoid the landmines that come with using traditional, outdated PGA stats. He can be found elsewhere writing for Rotoworld and Future of Fantasy.
