Searching for a Specialist: Arnold Palmer Invitational

EDITOR’S NOTE: Click here to learn how you could win a trip to Augusta with the Tour Junkies and FantasyDraft!

Staying in Florida this week, we should see more of the same names pop up this week in Orlando as we prep for Bay Hill Club & Lodge.

Reviewing last week’s specialists, Adam Hadwin found his way back to the top 15 while Jason Dufner was cruising before a monster collapse during his inward nine on Friday. Bill Haas also flashed into contention before fading. A pretty impressive result, given his off-the-course state of affairs.

For the Arnold Palmer Invitational, we will look at Performance on Bermuda Greens, Performance on Less-than-Driver Courses, Performance in Florida, Performance on Easy-to-Hit Fairways, and Fast Greens.

Here we go …

Performance on Bermuda Greens

Bay Hill features TifEagle Bermuda greens, which are a bit tougher for golfers that aren’t used to judging the grain.

This affects putting as well as chipping and approach shots, so let’s see who likes these bermuda surfaces…

The 10 Bermuda Specialists:

Si Woo Kim (1.656 sg:bermuda vs. 0.762 sg:total)
Louis Oosthuizen (2.673 sg:bermuda vs. 1.921 sg:total)
Ollie Schniederjans (2.044 sg:bermuda vs. 1.337 sg:total)
Francesco Molinari (2.572 sg:bermuda vs. 1.897 sg:total)
Lucas Glover (2.003 sg:bermuda vs. 1.382 sg:total)
Kevin Chappell (2.215 sg:bermuda vs. 1.628 sg:total)
Ryan Armour (1.417 sg:bermuda vs. 0.896 sg:total)
Sangmoon Bae (1.038 sg:bermuda vs. 0.586 sg:total)
Luke Donald (1.53 sg:bermuda vs. 1.101 sg:total)
Grayson Murray (1.125 sg:bermuda vs. 0.709 sg:total)

Si Woo Kim has wins at TPC Sawgrass and Sedgefield, proving that bermuda does fit his eye.

On the flip side, Patrick Rodgers grew up in Indy (likely bentgrass territory) and he went to school at Stanford (poa annua territory). He now calls Jupiter home, so I’m expecting his bermuda performance will turn around so far it’s pretty ugly.

Less-than-Driver Courses

Similar to the last few weeks, we have another course that lets golfers club down throughout the round.

There are still chances to use the big stick here, especially on the par 5s, but most of the par 4s are better suited with an iron or 3-wood off the tee.

The Top 10 Less-than-Driver Specialists are:

Tommy Fleetwood (2.62 sg:less-than-driver vs. 2.07 sg:total)
Ted Potter, Jr. (1.019 sg:less-than-driver vs. 0.478 sg:total)
Tyrrell Hatton (2.595 sg:less-than-driver vs. 2.095 sg:total)
Kevin Kisner (1.958 sg:less-than-driver vs. 1.608 sg:total)
Ryan Armour (1.245 sg:less-than-driver vs. 0.896 sg:total)
Graeme McDowell (1.423 sg:less-than-driver vs. 1.14 sg:total)
Alex Noren (2.193 sg:less-than-driver vs. 1.912 sg:total)
Luke Donald (1.379 sg:less-than-driver vs. 1.101 sg:total)
Jamie Lovemark (1.736 sg:less-than-driver vs. 1.463 sg:total)
Scott Piercy (1.455 sg:less-than-driver vs. 1.212 sg:total)

You may notice all the Europeans on this list. Perhaps that is due to the type of courses played on the Euro Tour.

At the bottom, we see Kevin Tway who is more than half-a-shot worse (compared to his baseline) when it comes to playing on less-than-driver courses. Not someone I’d want to invest much stock into…. That is what I said last week and his MC at the Valspar doesn’t change my opinion.

Florida Courses

We already looked at bermuda performance, which will correlate nicely with this angle.

Other than bermuda, Florida courses are often generally loaded with bunkers and water is a key defense.

The Top 10 Florida Specialists:

Adam Scott (3.042 sg:florida vs. 2.289 sg:total)
Vijay Singh (1.323 sg:florida vs. 0.58 sg:total)
Francesco Molinari (2.607 sg:florida vs. 1.897 sg:total)
Kyle Stanley (1.944 sg:florida vs. 1.301 sg:total)
Graeme McDowell (1.723 sg:florida vs. 1.14 sg:total)
Ben Martin (1.54 sg:florida vs. 0.991 sg:total)
Louis Oosthuizen (2.404 sg:florida vs. 1.921 sg:total)
Emiliano Grillo (2.062 sg:florida vs. 1.582 sg:total)
Lucas Glover (1.834 sg:florida vs. 1.382 sg:total)
Jamie Lovemark (1.861 sg:florida vs. 1.463 sg:total)

One thing we can immediately notice is BALL STRIKING. When it comes to avoiding the hazards on approach shots, guys like Adam Scott and Kyle Stanley are the prototype for golfers you’d want. They keep it between the pipes and then rarely miss by much with their second shots.

A common theme is also place of residence. Most (but not all) have a home in the state.

Easy-to-Hit Fairways

We previously mentioned the less-than-driver element of Bay Hill.

Less club off the tee leads to more fairways hit. That means a larger number of approach shots will come from the fairways this week. It’s really needed when you consider all the water in play. You don’t want to attack from the thick stuff this week.

The Top 10 Easy Fairway Specialists:

Ted Potter, Jr. (1.93 sg:easy fairways vs. 0.478 sg:total)
Sangmoon Bae (1.474 sg:easy fairways vs. 0.586 sg:total)
Louis Oosthuizen (2.557 sg:easy fairways vs. 1.921 sg:total)
Jimmy Walker (2.05 sg:easy fairways vs. 1.513 sg:total)
Hideki Matsuyama (3.005 sg:easy fairways vs. 2.508 sg:total)
Patrick Rodgers (1.224 sg:easy fairways vs. 0.812 sg:total)
Smylie Kaufman (0.671 sg:easy fairways vs. 0.276 sg:total)
Justin Rose (2.986 sg:easy fairways vs. 2.596 sg:total)
Brandt Snedeker (2.285 sg:easy fairways vs. 1.911 sg:total)
Whee Kim (0.962 sg:easy fairways vs. 0.614 sg:total)

You may recognize some of these names from getting into contention at the Masters.

Then near the bottom, you have guys like Henrik Stenson and Graeme McDowell, who have been defeated by Augusta National over the years.

Perhaps there is something to the correlation between Bay Hill and Augusta National.

Performance on Fast Greens

Looking at the last five years here, the stimpmeter has read 12.5, 13, 11.3, 12.6, and 13 feet.

That is FAST! The lone exception was 2015 when the greens suffered from worm damage.

The Top 10 Fast Green Specialists:

Sung Kang (1.933 sg:fast greens vs. 1.083 sg:total)
Kyle Stanley (1.956 sg:fast greens vs. 1.301 sg:total)
Vijay Singh (1.038 sg:fast greens vs. 0.58 sg:total)
Ian Poulter (1.831 sg:fast greens vs. 1.406 sg:total)
Charley Hoffman (2.073 sg:fast greens vs. 1.67 sg:total)
Stewart Cink (1.77 sg:fast greens vs. 1.396 sg:total)
Hudson Swafford (1.427 sg:fast greens vs. 1.075 sg:total)
Scott Brown (1.293 sg:fast greens vs. 0.941 sg:total)
Bryson DeChambeau (1.551 sg:fast greens vs. 1.214 sg:total)
Lucas Glover (1.678 sg:fast greens vs. 1.382 sg:total)

If you’ve been playing DFS Golf for long, you probably recognize most of this list as golfers that frustrate you on ShotTracker. You don’t want to be sweating out five footers, but apparently the fast greens can equalize the putting at times.

The Specialists

Francesco Molinari
Kevin Chappell
Ben Martin
Jamie Lovemark
Emiliano Grillo

The specialist this week is Francesco Molinari!

These are the type of weeks I love because none of these names have a high salary across the industry. Their expectations are low, but their course fit allows them plenty of wiggle room to pop.

Article Image

Molinari has done exactly that at Bay Hill, finishing T17 or better in each of his last four API starts. The Italian hasn’t been racking up birdies lately, but he did mention a switch back to a conventional putting grip this week. HE’s been using the pencil grip over the last 6 months, but perhaps this change will provide a nice spark on the greens.

After Molinari, it’s easy to fit in any or all of these specialists in your lineups this week. Tons of flexibility.

The one note I would add on Grillo is that jet lag can’t be ruled out. He played at the Hero Indian Open last week (appearance fee? or trying to pick up some easy OWGR points ahead of the Match Play?)… Keep that in mind as you evaluate the Argentine this week.

Anti-Specialists

Harris English
Henrik Stenson
Charles Howell III
Ernie Els
Jason Day

Jason Day you could argue that he’s been pretty bad at Bay Hill, outside of his 2016 win, but that was still when he was riding his heater. He’s showing signs of another run of form, so I wouldn’t count him out, despite the less-than-stellar fit.

Henrik Stenson is in the same boat since he’s proven he can contend here. Perhaps that’s due to his local knowledge as he resides here in Orlando. This is a case of course history overweighing otherwise poor course fit.

Super Simple Specialist Ratings

The goal of this article is to isolate course fit, to see who should outperform their baseline.

However, anyone with common sense knows that baseline talent (and current form) can’t be ignored when handicapping golf.

Combining Baseline Strokes Gained with Current Form and Specialist Rating, we get a Top 20 ranking that looks like this:

Kevin Chappell
Tommy Fleetwood
Tyrrell Hatton
Alex Noren
Luke List
Emiliano Grillo
Brandon Harkins
Patrick Reed
Francesco Molinari
Marc Leishman
Adam Scott
Charley Hoffman
Kevin Na
Louis Oosthuizen
Jamie Lovemark
Lucas Glover
Rory Mcilroy
Chris Kirk
Kevin Kisner
Kyle Stanley

How about that, Chappell checking in at #1… he ranks inside the top 25 in baseline performance, form, AND course fit.

Best of luck everyone!

Below is a table with the full specialist data. Any fields with a 0 in them mean the sample size is not large enough. There is a minimum of 30 rounds to qualify for each angle.

The SG:TOTAL column is a baseline performance measure (since 2014). It is time-weighted so more recent results count for more than finishes from years ago.

HISTORY column is a weighted performance metric based on course history. I’ve made small adjustments for sample sizes, but be sure to check on number of course rounds before blindly following this number.

FORM looks at the total strokes gained, adjusted to field strength, over the last 8 weeks (PGA TOUR and European Tour).

Josh Culp (futureoffantasy)

Josh didn’t own a set of golf clubs until after college but his love for the game now grows exponentially. He uses in-depth statistical analysis while trying to avoid the landmines that come with using traditional, outdated PGA stats. He can be found elsewhere writing for Rotoworld and Future of Fantasy. He can be found on twitter @futureoffantasy.
