Searching for a Specialist: AT&T Byron Nelson

This week’s course, Trinity Forest Golf Club, is brand new to the PGA TOUR rotation. That means we have no course history to lean on.

Instead, we can look at some performance stats on similar layouts to see who might take a quick liking to Trinity Forest.

Reviewing last week’s specialists, they went just 2-for-4 with Ian Poulter’s T11 being the highlight. Not a week to frame on the fridge, so let’s look for a bounce back in Dallas.

For this week’s big event, let’s look at Performance on Bermuda, Performance in Texas, Performance on Slow Greens, and Performance in Hot Weather.

At the end, I will also post a short list of potential links specialists, as well. I would have loved to include that angle, but the sample size is just too small. The addition of this event should help improve that for future links events.

Here we go …

Performance on Bermuda

Trinity Forest Golf Club has zoysia fairways but the greens are bermudagrass.

That puts an emphasis on golfers with positive experience with the grainy grasses.

The 10 Bermuda Specialists:

Robert Allenby (0.012 sg:bermuda vs. -0.802 sg:total)
Colt Knost (1.11 sg:bermuda vs. 0.498 sg:total)
Charlie Beljan (-0.787 sg:bermuda vs. -1.375 sg:total)
Grayson Murray (1.414 sg:bermuda vs. 0.89 sg:total)
Billy Horschel (1.76 sg:bermuda vs. 1.266 sg:total)
Greg Chalmers (0.417 sg:bermuda vs. -0.034 sg:total)
John Merrick (0.441 sg:bermuda vs. 0.008 sg:total)
Rory Sabbatini (1.19 sg:bermuda vs. 0.774 sg:total)
Joel Dahmen (0.921 sg:bermuda vs. 0.516 sg:total)
Dominic Bozzelli (0.66 sg:bermuda vs. 0.26 sg:total)

Quantity: At the top of the total strokes gained on bermuda since 2014 we have Billy Horschel, Adam Scott, Hideki Matsuyama, Matt Kuchar, and Jordan Spieth.

Looking at the top-10 list above, let’s not get carried away with the low-baseline guys like Allenby, Beljan, Chalmers, and Merrick.

Knost lived in Dallas for a long time so he should be very comfortable with bermuda as well as the area. He’s still trying to find his lost form, though.

Performance in Texas

When it comes to Texas golf, I generally think of firm and fast conditions and wind.

Some golfers like the heat. Some golfers like dealing with wind. Let’s see who those golfers are.

The Top 10 Texas Specialists:

Sung Kang (1.687 sg:Texas vs. 0.844 sg:total)
Jimmy Walker (2.222 sg:Texas vs. 1.555 sg:total)
Zac Blair (1.244 sg:Texas vs. 0.627 sg:total)
Charles Howell III (2.131 sg:Texas vs. 1.562 sg:total)
Ben Crane (1.15 sg:Texas vs. 0.612 sg:total)
Billy Hurley III (1.025 sg:Texas vs. 0.553 sg:total)
Nick Taylor (1.192 sg:Texas vs. 0.73 sg:total)
Michael Thompson (0.958 sg:Texas vs. 0.53 sg:total)
Ernie Els (0.805 sg:Texas vs. 0.379 sg:total)
Brian Gay (1.202 sg:Texas vs. 0.779 sg:total)

Kang and Walker are both Texas residents. Crane lived in the Dallas area for more than 10 years. There is an added benefit to spending your off-weeks in similar conditions.

Quantity: Golfers with the most weighted strokes gained in Texas since 2014 are Jordan Spieth, Matt Kuchar, Jimmy Walker, Ryan Palmer, and Billy Horschel.

Again, we see three Texas residents on that top-5 quantity list. Don’t underestimate the value of Texas ties.

Slow Greens

“Because of the bold slopes and rolls on the Coore-Crenshaw greens, they’ll be maintained at just 10.5 on a Stimpmeter for the Byron Nelson.”

Anything at 11 feet or less I consider slow, by PGA TOUR standards. This doesn’t mean that every putt is going to be easy or that every putt will be slow. However, if you land your approaches into the proper sections this week, putting should not be a huge concern. That’s easier said than done though.

The Top 10 Slow Green Specialists:

Padraig Harrington (1.37 sg:slow greens vs. 0.338 sg:total)
Troy Matteson (0.08 sg:slow greens vs. -0.94 sg:total)
Jonathan Randolph (0.944 sg:slow greens vs. -0.042 sg:total)
Tommy Gainey (0.327 sg:slow greens vs. -0.385 sg:total)
Smylie Kaufman (0.555 sg:slow greens vs. -0.059 sg:total)
Nick Taylor (1.329 sg:slow greens vs. 0.73 sg:total)
J.T. Poston (1.367 sg:slow greens vs. 0.777 sg:total)
Sergio Garcia (2.85 sg:slow greens vs. 2.282 sg:total)
Sung Kang (1.385 sg:slow greens vs. 0.844 sg:total)
Steve Marino (0.599 sg:slow greens vs. 0.064 sg:total)

Quantity: Most weighted strokes gained on slow greens since 2014 are Jordan Spieth, Matt Kuchar, Charles Howell III, Marc Leishman, and Hideki Matsuyama.

Despite his amazing per-round numbers on slow greens, Garcia ranks just 13th in total strokes on slow greens. Maybe he should consider rethinking his schedule! Of course at this point in his career he’s really only worried about majors where you will not find many slow greens.

Performance in the HEAT

The forecast is calling for temps in the 90s all week. That is HOT.

For this angle, I look at any round played where the reported high at the course reaches 86 degrees or higher.

The Top 10 Warm Weather Specialists:

Cody Gribble (1.018 sg:hot weather vs. 0.066 sg:total)
Ricky Barnes (1.395 sg:hot weather vs. 0.604 sg:total)
David Lingmerth (1.69 sg:hot weather vs. 1.005 sg:total)
Ken Duke (0.481 sg:hot weather vs. -0.163 sg:total)
Greg Chalmers (0.557 sg:hot weather vs. -0.034 sg:total)
Robert Allenby (-0.263 sg:hot weather vs. -0.802 sg:total)
Billy Horschel (1.777 sg:hot weather vs. 1.266 sg:total)
Johnson Wagner (1.174 sg:hot weather vs. 0.681 sg:total)
Tim Herron (-0.257 sg:hot weather vs. -0.702 sg:total)
Michael Kim (0.956 sg:hot weather vs. 0.535 sg:total)

We see plenty of Texas connections here, again.

Quantity: Most weighted strokes gained in the heat since 2014 are Hideki Matsuyama, Matt Kuchar, Marc Leishman, Billy Horschel, and Chad Campbell.

Chad Campbell!? That’s a bit of an odd one but he is a Texan so I guess he can handle the heat.

Baseline Performance

We now have a list of 4 golfers that are positive in all four angles.

However, we can filter out two golfers, John Merrick and Billy Hurley III, due too poor baseline performance. They might be worth a GPP dart or two, but nothing more, despite their course fit.

The Specialists

Shawn Stefani
Ben Martin

The specialist this week is Shawn Stefani!

Article Image

Stefani isn’t going to receive any awards for current form, but he’s done just enough to consider him in this week’s thin field.

On top of the angles used here, Stefani also seems to like zoysia fairways which are used here at Trinity Forest. He said this during the 2016 St. Jude Classic, “You know, in this game you want to go to courses that you have played well on. So, being here in the heat, the bermuda grass the zoysia fairways and the town is very nice.” That all lines up with the stats.

He could have easily just called out the heat and bermuda so for him to include zoysia fairways into that comment is a big plus. Let’s see if his strong course fit can overpower some middling form.

The same goes for Bermuda Benny Martin who has missed the cut in three of his last five starts. On the bright side, he is still 9 for his last 12, from a long-term view. Martin hasn’t been popping near the top of leaderboards lately but it wouldn’t surprise to see that change this week.

Super Simple Specialist Ratings

The goal of this article is to isolate course fit, to see who should outperform their baseline.

However, anyone with common sense knows that baseline talent (and current form) can’t be ignored when handicapping golf.

Combining Baseline Strokes Gained with Current Form and Specialist Rating, we get a Top 20 ranking that looks like this:

Billy Horschel
Charles Howell III
Jimmy Walker
Grayson Murray
Shawn Stefani
Beau Hossler
Keith Mitchell
Aaron Baddeley
Aaron Wise
Ben Crane
J.T. Poston
Matt Kuchar
Joaquin Niemann
Kevin Na
Russell Knox
Graeme Mcdowell
Peter Uihlein
J.J. Spaun
Michael Thompson
David Lingmerth

The defending champion grades out at #1 despite heading to a new layout. Imagine that. Jordan Spieth doesn’t crack the top 20 here due to his past performance in the heat. I think his familiarity with Trinity Forest can offset that to keep him as the overall favorite.

LINKS Performance

Like I mentioned at the top, I wanted to include this in the specialist search but the sample sizes were too low for most of the field. Given the past schedule, you had to be in majors (or the AT&T Pro-Am) to rack up any links experience. It’s nice to add another links course to the mix to see who shines here:

Brandt Snedeker (2.912 sg:links vs. 1.759 sg:total)
J.B. Holmes (2.307 sg:links vs. 1.478 sg:total)
Matt Jones (1.605 sg:links vs. 0.838 sg:total)
Bill Haas (2.232 sg:links vs. 1.603 sg:total)
Jordan Spieth (3.504 sg:links vs. 2.915 sg:total)
Branden Grace (2.333 sg:links vs. 1.747 sg:total)
Brendon Todd (0.588 sg:links vs. 0.116 sg:total)
Sergio Garcia (2.65 sg:links vs. 2.282 sg:total)
Padraig Harrington (0.68 sg:links vs. 0.338 sg:total)
Hideki Matsuyama (2.697 sg:links vs. 2.369 sg:total)

If you crosscheck this with bermuda performance you’ll notice there isn’t much overlap. That’s because the Open Championship is played with bentgrass/fescue greens and the AT&T Pro-Am is played on poa. The Open Championship is also generally played in cold weather which is the exact opposite of what we’ll see this week. I’m intrigued to see how some of these “links specialist” actually fare this week.

Best of luck everyone!

Below is a table with the full specialist data. Any fields with a 0 in them mean the sample size is not large enough. There is a minimum of 30 rounds to qualify for each angle.

The SG:TOTAL column is a baseline performance measure (since 2014). It is time-weighted so more recent results count for more than finishes from years ago.

HISTORY column is a weighted performance metric based on course history. I’ve made small adjustments for sample sizes but be sure to check on number of course rounds before blindly following this number.

FORM looks at the total strokes gained, adjusted to field strength, over the last 8 weeks (PGA TOUR and European Tour).

Josh Culp (futureoffantasy)

Josh didn’t own a set of golf clubs until after college but his love for the game now grows exponentially. He uses in-depth statistical analysis while trying to avoid the landmines that come with using traditional, outdated PGA stats. He can be found elsewhere writing for Rotoworld and Future of Fantasy. He can be found on twitter @futureoffantasy.
