Searching for a Specialist: AT&T Byron Nelson

The TOUR makes one final stop before the season’s second major and that stop will take place in Dallas, Texas.

The course is Trinity Forest Golf Club which is hosting this event for the second straight year. It’s a links-style course that provided a lot of fireworks in year one. It’s quite unique compared to the average week-to-week course so let’s see who might like the layout.

If you are new to the specialist search, here is a quick primer. The goal of this article is to look at a few key angles for the upcoming event and compare each golfer’s performance in those angles against their long-term baseline. For a golfer to get bucketed as a specialist, they must improve over their baseline in all five angles. At the bottom, I also include a table with the full-field rankings in each angle.

Reviewing last week, our specialist was Kyle Stanley who really popped with a top 10 by week’s end. The 2019 specialist tally now includes a top-10 rate of 25 percent at an average salary of $8,100. Not too shabby. Let’s keep it rolling.

This week we look at Performance on Bermuda Greens, Easy Courses, Easy-to-Hit Fairways, Easy-to-Hit Greens, and Performance in Weak Fields.

One more thing I’ve been tracking for a while and finally decided to make the flip. Current form will now include the last three months instead of last 6 weeks. I tracked this for a while and last 6 weeks provided value to the model in less than 20% events while last-12-week performance provides a lift over longtime baseline more than 33% of the time. Last week was the final straw when the form column showed Rory McIlroy with just ho-hum form when in reality it’s hard to find anyone playing better golf at the moment.

Here we go…

Bermuda Greens

Trinity Forest features zoysia fairways and then bermudagrass on the putting surfaces. They are massive putting surfaces, by the way. The largest on TOUR.

They will be prepped to run on the slow side (10.5 to 11 feet on the stimp).

The 10 Bermuda Specialists:

Sam Burns (1.591 sg:bermuda vs. 1.017 sg:total)
Keith Mitchell (1.764 sg:bermuda vs. 1.198 sg:total)
Dylan Frittelli (1.459 sg:bermuda vs. 1.019 sg:total)
Nicholas Lindheim (0.491 sg:bermuda vs. 0.077 sg:total)
Rory Sabbatini (1.294 sg:bermuda vs. 0.914 sg:total)
Ollie Schniederjans (1.224 sg:bermuda vs. 0.893 sg:total)
Ryan Moore (1.985 sg:bermuda vs. 1.69 sg:total)
Sungjae Im (2.168 sg:bermuda vs. 1.889 sg:total)
Denny McCarthy (1.369 sg:bermuda vs. 1.099 sg:total)
Trey Mullinax (1.177 sg:bermuda vs. 0.923 sg:total)

Quantity: The golfers that have the most strokes gained on Bermuda Greens since 2014 are Charles Howell III, Hideki Matsuyama, Daniel Berger, Patrick Reed, and Ryan Moore.

Sam Burns has proven to be a bermuda horse early in his career but how will he bounce back from last week’s WD? Might be worth a shot to find out.

Keith Mitchel ranks 4th in the field in terms of posting steady rounds on bermuda. He ranks 11th in the field when looking at the same stat across all grass types. He loves his bermuda.

Easy Courses

Trinity Forest yielded a 24% birdie or better rate last year which would rank 4th amongst all events since 2014 (Tourney of Champs, Desert Classic, and CIMB Classic).

The only defense of the course is wind so unless the forecast gets wild then we should expect plenty of birdies again this week.

The Top 10 Easy Course Specialists:

Martin Piller (0.545 sg:easy vs. 0.005 sg:total)
Anders Albertson (0.837 sg:easy vs. 0.332 sg:total)
Cody Gribble (0.369 sg:easy vs. -0.116 sg:total)
Nate Lashley (1.614 sg:easy vs. 1.136 sg:total)
Adam Svensson (1.003 sg:easy vs. 0.541 sg:total)
Marc Leishman (2.409 sg:easy vs. 1.957 sg:total)
Keith Mitchell (1.646 sg:easy vs. 1.198 sg:total)
Anirban Lahiri (1.301 sg:easy vs. 0.936 sg:total)
Jose de Jesus Rodriguez (0.746 sg:easy vs. 0.389 sg:total)
Roberto Castro (1.125 sg:easy vs. 0.792 sg:total)

Quantity: Golfers with the most weighted strokes gained on hard courses since 2014 are Charles Howell III, Marc Leishman, Jordan Spieth, Hideki Matsuyama, and Scott Piercy.

Anders Albertson is an interesting name. He crushed it on the Web circuit last year and did well out of the gate in the fall. Perhaps this easy course will be more to his liking. It’s really hard to trust him with the form, though.

Easy-to-Hit Fairways

Trinity Forest features some of the widest fairways you’ll see all year.

That led to a fairway-hit percentage of 79.5% last year which is easily the highest I have on file since 2010.

What course shows up as #2, 3, and 4 on that list? That would be the Plantation Course at Kapalua which hosts the Tournament of Champions. It’s also a Coore and Crenshaw design. A lot of overlapping factors in play if you want to use that as a correlated course.

The Top 10 Easy Fairway Specialists:

Chris Stroud (1.329 sg:easy fairways vs. 0.674 sg:total)
Ryan Blaum (1.239 sg:easy fairways vs. 0.711 sg:total)
Tyler Duncan (0.788 sg:easy fairways vs. 0.317 sg:total)
Kiradech Aphibarnrat (1.605 sg:easy fairways vs. 1.148 sg:total)
Kelly Kraft (0.92 sg:easy fairways vs. 0.488 sg:total)
Russell Henley (1.845 sg:easy fairways vs. 1.418 sg:total)
Keith Mitchell (1.62 sg:easy fairways vs. 1.198 sg:total)
Jordan Spieth (2.891 sg:easy fairways vs. 2.475 sg:total)
Nicholas Lindheim (0.484 sg:easy fairways vs. 0.077 sg:total)
Jonathan Byrd (1.079 sg:easy fairways vs. 0.709 sg:total)

Quantity: Most weighted strokes gained on Easy-to-Hit Fairways since 2014 are Jordan Spieth, Hideki Matsuyama, Patrick Reed, Marc Leishman, and Charles Howell III.

The two names at the bottom are Ryan Palmer and Carlos Ortiz. They both gain the largest chunk of their strokes via off-the-tee play. Sort of fitting that off-the-tee might matter a little less when everyone is hitting the fairways.

Weak Field Events

The field thins out quickly this week after the first handful of names at the top.

Some golfers play their best when the spotlight is dimmer. Let’s try to highlight some of those names.

The Top 10 Weak Field Specialists:

Kramer Hickok (1.337 sg:weak vs. 0.568 sg:total)
Andrew Landry (1.463 sg:weak vs. 0.734 sg:total)
Ryan Moore (2.359 sg:weak vs. 1.69 sg:total)
Anders Albertson (0.901 sg:weak vs. 0.332 sg:total)
Cameron Davis (1.294 sg:weak vs. 0.792 sg:total)
Austin Cook (1.806 sg:weak vs. 1.316 sg:total)
J.J. Spaun (1.452 sg:weak vs. 1.006 sg:total)
Michael Kim (0.7 sg:weak vs. 0.284 sg:total)
Abraham Ancer (1.442 sg:weak vs. 1.078 sg:total)
Anirban Lahiri (1.283 sg:weak vs. 0.936 sg:total)

Quantity: Most weighted strokes gained against Weak Fields since 2014 are Charles Howell III, Nick Taylor, Ryan Moore, David Hearn, and J.J. Spaun.

Again this is where fall-season performance comes into play. Most of the events are played on easy courses against weaker fields.

Performance on Easy-to-Hit Greens

The last piece of the Trinity Forest puzzle is the ease of landing greens in regulation.

During last year’s edition the field hit 76.8% of the greens in regulation. That was the second-highest GIR rate of the season and it falls just outside the top 10 for events since 2010. What course lands at Nos. 1 thru 7? That would be Kapalua again. The course correlation remains strong here. If only the field was full of more winners to gather a sample size.

The Top 10 Easy GIR Specialists:

Anders Albertson (1.203 sg:easy GIR vs. 0.332 sg:total)
Kiradech Aphibarnrat (2.014 sg:easy GIR vs. 1.148 sg:total)
Roberto Diaz (0.605 sg:easy GIR vs. 0.05 sg:total)
Nate Lashley (1.667 sg:easy GIR vs. 1.136 sg:total)
Cody Gribble (0.317 sg:easy GIR vs. -0.116 sg:total)
D.J. Trahan (0.669 sg:easy GIR vs. 0.243 sg:total)
Austin Cook (1.716 sg:easy GIR vs. 1.316 sg:total)
Nicholas Lindheim (0.474 sg:easy GIR vs. 0.077 sg:total)
Johnson Wagner (1.253 sg:easy GIR vs. 0.856 sg:total)
J.J. Spaun (1.372 sg:easy GIR vs. 1.006 sg:total)

Quantity: Most weighted strokes gained on Easy-to-Hit Greens since 2014 are Charles Howell III, Jordan Spieth, Marc Leishman, Patrick Reed, and Hideki Matsuyama.

The Barnrat shows up high on a few lists this week but he’s also nursing an ACL injury. Tough to really trust him even if the course should suit his game.

Baseline Performance

We now have 11 golfers that are positive in all five angles. Now we get to cut the fat for anyone that doesn’t fall inside the top 70 in form or baseline performance over the last year.

Troy Merritt: 74th in FORM
Austin Cook: 87th in FORM
J.J. Spaun: 93rd in FORM
David Hearn: 96th in FORM
Matt Every: 135th in FORM
Nicholas Lindheim: 136th in FORM
Cody Gribble: 147th in FORM

Blaum, Merritt, and Cook are the closest to reaching the Top 70 Form threshold but overall it’s hard to trust these names despite the strong course fit. Might be worth a few GPP sprinkles if you’re MME’ing.

The Specialist

Ryan Blaum
Marc Leishman
Shawn Stefani
Aaron Wise

The Duke Blue Devil (Blaum) is 63rd in performance over the last year and 58th in Form. The form number is a bit surprising since he’s missed the cut in three of his last six starts but a top 20 at the API is holding up most of that weight. It also shows how weak this field is, if Blaum’s form is top 60 in the field. His baseline numbers suggest a cut-line sweat is on the way but his course fit gives him that top-25 upside that makes him worthy of GPP consideration.

The big Aussie (Leishman) finds himself with the #2 specialist belt this week.

Leish crushes easy courses, improving over his baseline by nearly half a stroke per round. As long as the course plays easy again then I’d look for Leish to be in the hunt again.

No. 3 man is Shawn Stefani. The Texan thrives when the tee-to-green test is easy. Bermuda is also his preferred surface. Should not be affected by any Texas weather that whirls through.

Last we have the defending champ, Aaron Wise. He doesn’t pop off the page an one specific angle but the overall fit is still tidy. When talking about the course last year he had this to say, “I love this type of golf because it really makes you think and it’s not just go ahead and hit it because the course changes. Kind a thinker’s course. I like that.

The Anti-Specialists

Ryan Palmer
Carlos Ortiz
Billy Hurley III
Jonas Blixt
Tyrone Van Aswegen
David Lingmerth
Martin Laird

Palmer is coming off a team win at the Zurich Classic. He brings the Texas comfort but that didn’t help him last year when he missed the cut in his Trinity Forest debut. He’s projected to be quite popular this week but I will gladly swerve him and do a complete fade.

Super Simple Specialist Ratings

The goal of this article is to isolate course fit, to see who should outperform their baseline.

However, anyone with common sense knows that baseline talent (and current form) can’t be ignored when handicapping golf.

Combining Long-Term Skill (L52) with Current Form and Specialist Rating, we get a Top 20 ranking that looks like this:

Hideki Matsuyama
Charles Howell III
Aaron Wise
Ryan Moore
Marc Leishman
Sungjae Im
Keith Mitchell
Justin Harding
Kevin Na
Denny McCarthy
Rafa Cabrera Bello
Dylan Frittelli
Russell Knox
Michael Thompson
Adam Schenk
Daniel Berger
C.T. Pan
Brooks Koepka
Patrick Reed
Abraham Ancer

This is a first glimpse of how L6 Week Form versus L12 Week Form can make a big difference. CH3 arrives off back-to-back missed cuts but before that he gained a ton of strokes against some strong fields from February to April. Extremely short-term form suggests he’s a fade but 12-week form suggests he’s a great bounce-back candidate.

Best of luck everyone!

Below is a table with the full specialist data. Any fields with a 0 in them mean the sample size is not large enough. There is a minimum of 30 rounds to qualify for each angle.

The SG:TOTAL column is a baseline performance measure (since 2014). It is time-weighted so more recent results count for more than finishes from years ago.

HISTORY column is a weighted performance metric based on course history. I’ve made tiny adjustments for sample sizes, but be sure to check on number of course rounds before blindly following this number.

FORM looks at the total strokes gained, adjusted to field strength, over the last 12 weeks (PGA TOUR, Web.com Tour, and European Tour).

SIMPLE RATING looks at Long-Term Skill (L52), FORM, and SPECIALIST RATING to create a simple rating that includes course fit but doesn’t overweight it.

L52 FORM looks at performance over the last 52 weeks across the PGA TOUR, Web.com Tour, and European Tour.

Josh Culp (futureoffantasy)

Josh didn’t own a set of golf clubs until after college but his love for the game now grows exponentially. He uses in-depth statistical analysis while trying to avoid the landmines that come with using traditional, outdated PGA stats. He can be found elsewhere writing for Rotoworld and Future of Fantasy. He can be found on twitter @futureoffantasy.
