Searching for a Specialist: AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am

Going, going, back, back, to Cali, Cali.

A lot of big names are starting to ramp up their Masters preparation this week, which leaves us with a very top-heavy field of 156 golfers and 156 celebrities/amateurs.

Last week our group of specialists picked up four top 45s with two going for T11s. Laird and Hadley popped out of the GPP-specialists pack to pick up top 10s, as well. Three missed cuts were disappointing. Some good, some bad, but room for improvement this week…

For the AT&T Pro-Am, we will look at Performance on Poa Annua Greens, Coastal Courses, Easy-to-Hit Fairways, and finish up with Performance over the Winter Months.

I also got a request for a weighted course history, so I’ve added that to the table at the bottom.

Here we go …

Performance on Poa Annua Greens

The first thing golfers point out about this event is the spectacular ocean views.

However, the biggest talking point in post-round interviews is often the poa annua putting surfaces. These greens are known to get bumpy, especially as the day progresses.

You really have to be patient and understand you’re going to miss some putts that should have gone in.

The 10 Poa Specialists:

Sangmoon Bae (2.08 sg:poa vs. 0.856 sg:total)
Dustin Johnson (3.639 sg:poa vs. 2.771 sg:total)
Scott Stallings (1.301 sg:poa vs. 0.49 sg:total)
Charlie Beljan (0.157 sg:poa vs. -0.641 sg:total)
Vaughn Taylor (1.722 sg:poa vs. 1.012 sg:total)
Shane Lowry (2.362 sg:poa vs. 1.659 sg:total)
D.A. Points (0.618 sg:poa vs. -0.047 sg:total)
K.J. Choi (1.374 sg:poa vs. 0.715 sg:total)
J.B. Holmes (2.126 sg:poa vs. 1.498 sg:total)
Derek Fathauer (0.938 sg:poa vs. 0.393 sg:total)

Dustin Johnson wins on all putting surfaces, but he may be the king of poa. He’s finished 1st or 2nd in 8 of his last 17 starts on courses with poa annua greens!

Not shown is Brandt Snedeker, but if I included his entire career instead of just 2014 and on, he’d probably be on the list. Five of his career wins have come on poa greens.

On the flip side, someone like Russell Henley is 0 for his last 11 on poa in terms of finding top 20s. He’s also said this in the past, “Those West Coast tournaments can be brutal, I feel like those greens are really hard to putt on, and they are not easy courses.” Of course, he could just be setting a low bar with his quotes, but that’s not the kind of confidence I like to see.

Coastal Courses

There are three courses on hand this week and Spyglass is the only one that isn’t heavily exposed to the coast.

Playing by the coast typically means exposure to the elements and often leads architects and agronomists to design/maintain the course in particular ways.

The Top 10 Coastal Specialists are:

Kelly Kraft (1.393 sg:coastal vs. 0.319 sg:total)
Branden Grace (2.452 sg:coastal vs. 1.589 sg:total)
Rob Oppenheim (0.917 sg:coastal vs. 0.253 sg:total)
Brian Gay (1.042 sg:coastal vs. 0.383 sg:total)
Luke Donald (1.804 sg:coastal vs. 1.208 sg:total)
Nicholas Lindheim (0.47 sg:coastal vs. -0.114 sg:total)
Scott Stallings (1.027 sg:coastal vs. 0.49 sg:total)
Gary Woodland (2.129 sg:coastal vs. 1.605 sg:total)
David Duval (-0.71 sg:coastal vs. -1.193 sg:total)
Brian Stuard (1.14 sg:coastal vs. 0.667 sg:total)

Branden Grace is a fun name here. Known for his links prowess, it makes a lot of sense that he’d shine by the coast. He’s picked up top 20s in eight of his 11 PGA TOUR starts on coastal courses, making the cut in all 11.

Near the bottom is Charley Hoffman. He still has upside on coastal courses (won the OHL Classic) but he’s missed the cut in 10 of his last 22 on coastal layouts. Very boom or bust in these environments, it appears.

Easy-to-Hit Fairways

Pebble Beach gets a lot of attention for its tiny green complexes, some of the smallest on TOUR.

However, golfers will be hitting plenty of their approach shots from the fairway this week.

Since 2010, Pebble Beach the field has averaged 69.8% of fairways hit for the week. That is in spite of Spyglass Hill, which typically stymies golfers into just 60-to-65% of fairways hit. On the high side is Monterey Peninsula’s Shore Course, where nearly 3/4 of all fairways are typically hit.

That typically means elite ball-striking or elite course management rises to the top.

The Top 10 Easy Fairway Specialists:

Trey Mullinax (1.41 sg:easy fairways vs. 0.632 sg:total)
Kelly Kraft (1.066 sg:easy fairways vs. 0.319 sg:total)
Charlie Beljan (-0.037 sg:easy fairways vs. -0.641 sg:total)
Jordan Spieth (3.265 sg:easy fairways vs. 2.825 sg:total)
Padraig Harrington (0.784 sg:easy fairways vs. 0.378 sg:total)
Ryan Blaum (1.115 sg:easy fairways vs. 0.728 sg:total)
Scott Stallings (0.83 sg:easy fairways vs. 0.49 sg:total)
Robert Garrigus (0.891 sg:easy fairways vs. 0.595 sg:total)
Ryan Armour (0.824 sg:easy fairways vs. 0.53 sg:total)
Chris Stroud (1.038 sg:easy fairways vs. 0.748 sg:total)

If DJ is the King of Poa, then Jordan Spieth may be the King of Easy Fairways. Looking at his last 24 starts on courses where the fairways were easy to hit, he’s posted top-3 finishes in 10 of those (42%).

Winter Months

Don’t be alarmed by the title reading “winter”, this list has nothing to do with Game of Thrones or Ice Fishing.

Whether is grass types, weather, or motivation, some golfers thrive in these early-year events.

The Top 10 Winter Specialists:

Jon Rahm (3.288 sg:winter vs. 2.388 sg:total)
Nick Watney (1.618 sg:winter vs. 0.994 sg:total)
Richy Werenski (0.974 sg:winter vs. 0.384 sg:total)
Matt Every (0.282 sg:winter vs. -0.279 sg:total)
Seamus Power (1.534 sg:winter vs. 1.022 sg:total)
Jimmy Walker (2.118 sg:winter vs. 1.675 sg:total)
K.J. Choi (1.133 sg:winter vs. 0.715 sg:total)
Brian Stuard (1.073 sg:winter vs. 0.667 sg:total)
Jason Kokrak (1.626 sg:winter vs. 1.244 sg:total)
Padraig Harrington (0.758 sg:winter vs. 0.378 sg:total)

Rahmbo tops the list, it’s no wonder he’s such a busybody this time of year. He loves playing on the West Coast and these California climates. I don’t think he’ll maintain this busy early-season schedule his entire career, but we should capitalize while he does.

Baseline Performance

Like always, our last step is to weed out the huge longshots.

To do that we will eliminate anyone that falls outside the top 70 in Weighted Performance or anyone that hasn’t picked up a top 30 over the last four months. Not too strict, but definitely helps avoid the golfers that should be reserved for GPPs only:

Jim Herman
Brian Stuard
Scott Stallings
Padraig Harrington
Kelly Kraft

The Specialists

Dustin Johnson
Matt Jones
Kevin Streelman
Patrick Reed
Brandt Snedeker

The specialist this week is Dustin Johnson!

DJ is the World No. 1 golfer and also a two-time winner at this event. I’m not revealing any dark secret when I say that DJ sets up well for this event. If you were on the fence between what studs to choose this week, possibly consider this is a tiebreaker.

Snedeker is another two-time winner at this event.

patrick-reed-550x330

Patrick Reed was seen “practicing” with a long putter on Tuesday. I hope that he was only joking and that he’s not about to make a switch to the should-be-banned, Bernhard Langer styler of putting.

Kevin Streelman is 6-for-10 at this event but 6-for-7 since 2010 when the current rotation of courses was put into place.

I talked about Matt Jones last week. He potentially deserves to be dropped to the GPP-only section since his recent top 30s have come on the lesser tours. He hasn’t flashed any PGA TOUR form in a bit. Still a good fit.

Anti-Specialists

Vijay Singh
Billy Hurley III
Steve Wheatcroft
Brendon de Jonge
Nick Taylor
Charley Hoffman
Kevin Na
Ricky Barnes
Matt Kuchar
Alex Cejka
Chris Kirk
Ben Crane

Quite a long list here. The big ones to consider fading would be Charley Hoffman, Matt Kuchar, and Chris Kirk. These are typically steady cut-makers but some of their upside gets thrown out the window when they head to an event with a poor course fit.

Super Simple Specialist Ratings

The goal of this article is to isolate course fit, to see who should outperform their baseline.

However, anyone with common sense knows that baseline talent (and current form) can’t be ignored when handicapping golf.

Combining Baseline Strokes Gained with Current Form and Specialist Rating, we get a Top 20 ranking that looks like this:

Dustin Johnson
Gary Woodland
Jon Rahm
Jordan Spieth
Jason Kokrak
Patrick Reed
Chez Reavie
Austin Cook
Brandt Snedeker
Chesson Hadley
Kevin Streelman
Brandon Harkins
Phil Mickelson
J.B. Holmes
Nick Watney
Pat Perez
Brian Gay
Rory Mcilroy
Patrick Cantlay
Beau Hossler

With the TOUR getting back in full gear after the holiday break, this list is starting to look better and better each week.

Best of luck everyone!

Below is a table with the full specialist data. Any fields with a 0 in them mean the sample size is not large enough. There is a minimum of 30 rounds to qualify for each angle.

The SG:Total column is a baseline performance measure (since 2014).

WEIGHTED column is another column for baseline performance, but it’s time-weighted so more recent results count for more.

HISTORY column is a weighted performance metric based on course history. I’ve made small adjustments for sample sizes but be sure to check on number of course rounds before blindly following this number.

Form looks at the total strokes gained, adjusted to field strength, over the last 8 weeks (PGA, Web, and Euro).

Josh Culp (futureoffantasy)

Josh didn’t own a set of golf clubs until after college but his love for the game now grows exponentially. He uses in-depth statistical analysis while trying to avoid the landmines that come with using traditional, outdated PGA stats. He can be found elsewhere writing for Rotoworld and Future of Fantasy. He can be found on twitter @futureoffantasy.
