Searching for a Specialist: CareerBuilder Challenge

The TOUR heads back to the mainland for this week’s pro-am event in the Coachella Valley.

We had a strong showing from our specialists last week with 5-of-7 picking up top 25s, so let’s keep that momentum rolling this week.

For the CareerBuilder, we can look at Performance on Overseeded Greens, Par 72 Courses, Easy Courses, and Short Courses.

Here we go …

Performance on Overseeded Greens

Given the time of year, the greens at PGA WEST are still in full overseed mode.

That means the bermudagrass is still sleeping, and won’t return to dominance until Spring. In the short term, that means we get a blend of Ryegrass and Poa Trivialis which are common grasses used for overseeding.

Let’s see who performs well on courses with similar grasses:

The 10 Overseed Specialists:

Ryan Palmer (2.153 sg:overseeded vs. 1.372 sg:total)
Matt Jones (1.53 sg:overseeded vs. 1.429 sg:total)
John Huh (1.263 sg:overseeded vs. 0.088 sg:total)
Jason Gore (0.857 sg:overseeded vs. -0.33 sg:total)
Brian Stuard (1.131 sg:overseeded vs. 0.647 sg:total)
Chris Kirk (1.71 sg:overseeded vs. 0.615 sg:total)
Webb Simpson (2.03 sg:overseeded vs. 1.045 sg:total)
Patrick Reed (2.171 sg:overseeded vs. 1.781 sg:total)
Brendan Steele (1.967 sg:overseeded vs. 1.971 sg:total)
Martin Laird (1.531 sg:overseeded vs. 2.053 sg:total)

The first thing that comes to mind is that a lot of poor putters tend to shine on overseeded greens. Perhaps the lack of grain makes it easy and breezy for everyone to make putts.

Near the bottom, we have some elite putters like Brandt Snedeker and Derek Fathauer. Both of them thrive on poa annua greens, so they prefer more difficult putting conditions.

Chez Reavie also falls near the bottom. Diving into the starts since 2014, he’s found just one top 15 on overseeded greens during that time (HEY IT CAME HERE, THOUGH!), missing the cut in 9-of-15. He’s playing really well right now, but there may be something about these type of grasses that don’t tickle his fancy. That might help explain why he doesn’t fare well at the Phoenix Open (another overseeded course) despite his ASU ties.

Par 72 Courses

We have a trio of courses this week, but they all have four par 5s.

A full slate of par 5s typically gives an advantage to longer hitters. I say typically because the length of the course/holes also plays a part which we’ll get to in a bit. For now, let’s see who likes to take advantage of par 72s…

The Top 10 Par 72 Specialists are:

John Daly (-0.572 sg:par72 vs. -1.196 sg:total)
Andrew Loupe (0.498 sg:par72 vs. -0.079 sg:total)
Brandon Hagy (1.216 sg:par72 vs. 0.692 sg:total)
Smylie Kaufman (1.101 sg:par72 vs. 0.649 sg:total)
Luke List (1.756 sg:par72 vs. 1.338 sg:total)
Peter Uihlein (1.215 sg:par72 vs. 0.869 sg:total)
Lucas Glover (1.3 sg:par72 vs. 0.969 sg:total)
Bronson Burgoon (0.783 sg:par72 vs. 0.485 sg:total)
Martin Flores (0.998 sg:par72 vs. 0.714 sg:total)
Chesson Hadley (0.713 sg:par72 vs. 0.437 sg:total)

Talk about firepower! This list is full of heavy hitters. From a DK and FD perspective, that should really pay dividends this week. All you need is for them to sneak through the 54-hole cut.

Two names near the bottom really stand out, Wes Bryan and Abraham Ancer. Both rely on approach and short game, not distance. Wes Bryan even took out the driver from his bag last week, so I would expect all these par 5s to be three-shot holes for him.

Easy Courses

With a full field of amateurs teeing it up this week, all the courses are set up as easy as possible.

Typically the TOUR tucks pins to challenge the golfers, but that’s not the case this week. Goflers can attack with less fear of short-siding themselves or finding a hazard.

Let’s see who gets a boost on these easy courses…

The Top 10 Easy Course Specialists:

Ryan Blaum (1.272 sg:easy vs. 0.719 sg:total)
Patton Kizzire (1.278 sg:easy vs. 0.728 sg:total)
Johnson Wagner (1.041 sg:easy vs. 0.561 sg:total)
Nicholas Lindheim (0.323 sg:easy vs. -0.12 sg:total)
Webb Simpson (2.003 sg:easy vs. 1.562 sg:total)
Scott Piercy (1.46 sg:easy vs. 1.025 sg:total)
Robert Garrigus (0.968 sg:easy vs. 0.538 sg:total)
James Hahn (1.222 sg:easy vs. 0.814 sg:total)
Steve Wheatcroft (0.645 sg:easy vs. 0.3 sg:total)
Grayson Murray (0.908 sg:easy vs. 0.595 sg:total)

Most of this list is on the positive side of the putting spectrum. It’s hard to keep up in a shootout without the ability to hole putts. There are obviously exceptions for those golfers that can stuff their approaches time after time.

Ryan Blaum is 13-for-15 in events that qualify as easy. That includes four top 15s. That may not be notable for a top-tier golfer, but Blaum only has five top 15s since 2014, meaning only one of them haven’t come on easy tracks. After a T10 last week, he may be ready for another strong showing.

Short Courses

We’ve established that these easy, par-72 courses are overseeded with rye, but they are also rather short.

All three land between 7,060 and 7,160 yards which is certainly short for a trio of par 72s.

The Top 10 Short Course Specialists:

J.J. Spaun (1.739 sg:short vs. 0.955 sg:total)
Mac Hughes (1.549 sg:short vs. 0.828 sg:total)
Lucas Glover (1.568 sg:short vs. 0.969 sg:total)
Brice Garnett (0.829 sg:short vs. 0.244 sg:total)
Patton Kizzire (1.31 sg:short vs. 0.728 sg:total)
Richy Werenski (0.961 sg:short vs. 0.38 sg:total)
Blayne Barber (1.13 sg:short vs. 0.624 sg:total)
Fabian Gomez (0.973 sg:short vs. 0.487 sg:total)
Brendan Steele (1.999 sg:short vs. 1.542 sg:total)
C.T. Pan (1.136 sg:short vs. 0.734 sg:total)

Lucas Glover is the name that pops here. Looking at his last 28 starts on short courses, he’s racked up 10 top 20s, finishing T41 or better in 17 of his last 20 on short courses. It may seem scary, but he is a reasonable cash-game option this week.

On the flip side, it’s not surprising to see big hitters like Bubba Watson, Jon Rahm, and Grayson Murray near the bottom.

Rahm will be very popular this week at the top. Looking at his last 12 starts on short courses, he’s picked up top 10s in three of them (25%). That is very strong but his T10 rate in all other stroke-play events is 12-of-24 (50%). We are not getting a great course fit with Rahm but his stats are still nothing to sneeze at.

Baseline Performance

Like always, our last step is to weed out the huge longshots.

This week we have Jonathan Byrd fall into this category. He is positive in all four categories but his Weighted Baseline ranks 90th in the field. We can consider him as a GPP flyer, but I wouldn’t make him a core play.

The Specialists

Patton Kizzire
Bill Haas
Hudson Swafford

The specialist this week is Patton Kizzire.

This guy just won’t get off our radar! He showed up very high on our list at the OHL due to his crushing of short courses. He went on to win. He also just grabbed another win at the Sony Open, an event where distance is not required. We can’t rule out a letdown due to the big win last week but it won’t be due to the lack of course fit here in the California desert.

Article Image

Bill Haas certainly checks a ton of boxes as the all-time money winner at this event. Regardless of the specific courses used he just likes this area, golfing on easy courses with easy-to-putt greens.

Lastly, we have Hudson Swafford who is the defending champ. Like Kizzire, that calls for a potential letdown spot, but I won’t fade him since the event clearly sets up well for him. In past years he’s rented a place in Palm Springs a month ahead of this event to prep for the new year. He may have done the same thing this year but spent way less time there if he did, considering he qualified for the Tournament of Champions and has been spending his time recently in Hawaii.

Anti-Specialists

Billy Hurley III
Kevin Chappell
Ricky Barnes
Danny Lee
Matt Every
Jason Kokrak
Chris Stroud

Kevin Chappell is the biggest name here. He ranks 17th in weighted baseline, but his supreme lack of course fit means a top 25 may not be in the cards. He will be popular with his cheap price tag this week but he may be one to swerve.

Super Simple Specialist Ratings

The goal of this article is to isolate course fit, to see who should outperform their baseline.

However, anyone with common sense knows that baseline talent (and current form) can’t be ignored when handicapping golf.

Combining Baseline Strokes Gained with Current Form and Specialist Rating, we get a Top 20 ranking that looks like this:

Webb Simpson
Charles Howell III
Patton Kizzire
Chris Kirk
Kevin Kisner
Jason Dufner
Brian Harman
Zach Johnson
Matt Jones
J.J. Spaun
Brian Stuard
Lucas Glover
Patrick Reed
James Hahn
Phil Mickelson
Ryan Blaum
Hudson Swafford
Harold Varner III
Jonathan Byrd
Martin Laird

Webb grades out as #1 in this regard, accounting for long-term, short-term, and course fit.

One that surprised me is Matt Jones. His form gets a boost from him staying busy in Australia while many were taking their holiday break.

I have to mention that due to that break, the current form column is very fickle. One bad event can drop you a lot. That Form column will sort itself out as the year progresses and we can really see who is finding their game.

Best of luck everyone!

Below is a table with the full specialist data. Any fields with a 0 in them mean the sample size is not large enough. There is a minimum of 30 rounds to qualify for each angle.

The SG:Total column is a baseline performance measure (since 2014).

WEIGHTED column is another column for baseline performance, but it’s time-weighted so more recent results count for more.

Form looks at the total strokes gained, adjusted to field strength, over the last 8 weeks (PGA, Web, and Euro).

Josh Culp (futureoffantasy)

Josh didn’t own a set of golf clubs until after college but his love for the game now grows exponentially. He uses in-depth statistical analysis while trying to avoid the landmines that come with using traditional, outdated PGA stats. He can be found elsewhere writing for Rotoworld and Future of Fantasy. He can be found on twitter @futureoffantasy.
