Searching for a Specialist: Corales Championship

Heading down to the Caribbean, let’s take a look at this week’s Corales Championship. More specifically we are going to look at the Corales Golf Club to see what type of golfers should fit the course.

Last week our top two specialists were Molinari and Chappell. Moli was slow out of the gate but provided some decent results by week’s end. Chappell had one bad round but soared up the leaderboard Sunday to pick up a top 10.

For the Corales, we will look at Performance on Grainy Greens, Performance on Long Courses, Performance on Coastal Course, Performance on Easy-to-Hit Fairways, and Windy Conditions.

Here we go …

Performance on Grainy Greens

This week’s course features paspalum greens. There are a few other stops on TOUR where paspalum is featured (CIMB, Puerto Rico, OHL) but that’s not enough to draw a huge sample.

Instead, I’ve combined paspalum with their closest living relative (bermuda) to create this metric.

The 10 Grainy Green Specialists:

John Daly (-0.512 sg:grainy vs. -1.426 sg:total)
D.J. Trahan (0.132 sg:grainy vs. -0.586 sg:total)
Michael Bradley (-0.101 sg:grainy vs. -0.653 sg:total)
Robert Allenby (-0.245 sg:grainy vs. -0.786 sg:total)
Cameron Beckman (-1.319 sg:grainy vs. -1.83 sg:total)
John Merrick (0.345 sg:grainy vs. -0.086 sg:total)
Retief Goosen (1.133 sg:grainy vs. 0.705 sg:total)
Greg Chalmers (0.388 sg:grainy vs. -0.009 sg:total)
Steve Wheatcroft (0.56 sg:grainy vs. 0.202 sg:total)
Jason Gore (0.402 sg:grainy vs. 0.048 sg:total)

Right out of the gate we see what kind of event this is going to be. Seven of the 10 names above have a NEGATIVE baseline performance.

The three that are positive in long-term performance and on the list above? Retief Goosen, Steve Wheatcroft, and Jason Gore. Alrighty then.

Long Courses

Corales GC can play up to 7,670 yards if they play it from the tips.

All four par 3s are over 200 yards, four pars 4s are over 460 yards, and two of the par 5s stretch out past 620 yards. Length should certainly be an advantage.

The Top 10 Long Course Specialists:

Jason Gore (0.663 sg:long vs. 0.048 sg:total)
D.A. Points (0.332 sg:long vs. -0.18 sg:total)
Mark Wilson (0.372 sg:long vs. -0.127 sg:total)
J.J. Henry (0.727 sg:long vs. 0.254 sg:total)
Trevor Immelman (-0.397 sg:long vs. -0.848 sg:total)
Carl Pettersson (0.082 sg:long vs. -0.363 sg:total)
Angel Cabrera (0.396 sg:long vs. -0.039 sg:total)
Matt Every (-0.165 sg:long vs. -0.518 sg:total)
J.T. Poston (1.063 sg:long vs. 0.716 sg:total)
Kevin Tway (1.127 sg:long vs. 0.786 sg:total)

Right away we see some overlap with Jason Gore finding both lists. He hasn’t popped up on any PGA TOUR leaderboards recently but he could be one to watch as a super deep sleeper.

On the flip side we see Jonathan Byrd and Davis Love III at the bottom of this list. Both lose more than 1/2 a shot per round on long courses (compared to their baseline).

Coastal Courses

When it comes to coastal golf, comfort in the wind is nice but coastal courses also usually share some similar attributes.

There is often not that many trees and fairways are often generous. If you make a tight tree-lined coastal course and then the winds whip up, rounds could get very ugly.

The Top 10 Coastal Specialists:

Kelly Kraft (1.003 sg:coastal vs. 0.324 sg:total)
Patrick Rodgers (1.405 sg:coastal vs. 0.741 sg:total)
Rob Oppenheim (1.021 sg:coastal vs. 0.369 sg:total)
Martin Flores (1.357 sg:coastal vs. 0.727 sg:total)
John Daly (-0.867 sg:coastal vs. -1.426 sg:total)
Retief Goosen (1.228 sg:coastal vs. 0.705 sg:total)
Brendon Todd (0.516 sg:coastal vs. 0.115 sg:total)
Zac Blair (0.997 sg:coastal vs. 0.614 sg:total)
Brice Garnett (0.692 sg:coastal vs. 0.4 sg:total)
Fabian Gomez (0.686 sg:coastal vs. 0.425 sg:total)

Patrick Rodgers spent his college days at Stanford so perhaps that is where his love for coastal golf came to be.

Kelly Kraft played at SMU, in windy Texas, which may tell us why he shines by the coast.

In fact, if you sort by COASTAL on the bottom table, then you’ll also notice that each of the top 13 in coastal improvement are also positive in the WIND angle. The two go hand-in-hand.

Easy-to-Hit Fairways

When fairways are easy to hit, it usually means less opportunity for big numbers.

When you remove the chances of off-the-tee penalty strokes, you’ll notice a lot of big hitters up their games.

The Top 10 Easy Fairway Specialists:

Trey Mullinax (1.405 sg:easy fairways vs. 0.804 sg:total)
Patrick Rodgers (1.255 sg:easy fairways vs. 0.741 sg:total)
Martin Flores (1.202 sg:easy fairways vs. 0.727 sg:total)
Harold Varner III (1.244 sg:easy fairways vs. 0.776 sg:total)
David Hearn (1.207 sg:easy fairways vs. 0.802 sg:total)
Geoff Ogilvy (0.822 sg:easy fairways vs. 0.437 sg:total)
Kelly Kraft (0.686 sg:easy fairways vs. 0.324 sg:total)
Troy Merritt (0.834 sg:easy fairways vs. 0.476 sg:total)
Robert Allenby (-0.461 sg:easy fairways vs. -0.786 sg:total)
Retief Goosen (1.029 sg:easy fairways vs. 0.705 sg:total)

Like I said with easy fairways, we see plenty of bombers on the list. Mullinax, Rodgers, and HV3 are the first three that catch my eye. Give them less opportunity to rack up OB penalties and suddenly they start racking up birdies instead.

The same is true on the opposite side, we see short-hitting G-Mac, Summerhays, and Slocum as the three lowest. McDowell has proven his ability to handle the wind over the course of his career but will he have enough length to contend at Corales? That depends on the way they set up the course, but overall it’s not as strong of a fit as we might have originally thought. I would still consider McDowell a decent play since his baseline performance is still inside the top 10 in this weak field.

Windy Conditions

The current forecast calls for mediocre winds but it’s the gusts that are concerning.

During Thursday and Friday golfers will have to deal with 15 MPH gusts while the weekend could bring 20+ MPH gusts.

Back in 2016 Drew Weaver had this to say about the layout, “The wind is the biggest factor out here because this is a generous golf course. Making sure you know where the wind is critical.”

The Top 10 Wind Specialists:

Jason Gore (0.996 sg:wind vs. 0.048 sg:total)
George McNeill (1.458 sg:wind vs. 0.638 sg:total)
Tim Herron (0.122 sg:wind vs. -0.658 sg:total)
Kelly Kraft (1.079 sg:wind vs. 0.324 sg:total)
Kevin Tway (1.518 sg:wind vs. 0.786 sg:total)
Robert Allenby (-0.327 sg:wind vs. -0.786 sg:total)
Mike Weir (-1.752 sg:wind vs. -2.2 sg:total)
Greg Chalmers (0.403 sg:wind vs. -0.009 sg:total)
J.T. Poston (1.126 sg:wind vs. 0.716 sg:total)
Stuart Appleby (0.53 sg:wind vs. 0.128 sg:total)

There is our guy Jason Gore again. Not someone I’d really trust, but he could be a darkhorse to pop.

#11 on this list would have been Slumpin’ Smylie Kaufman. This course does grade out as a pretty strong fit so maybe, just maybe, he can break out of his massive slump.

The Specialists

Retief Goosen
Emiliano Grillo

The specialist this week is Retief Goosen.

Article Image

The South African has flashed some form early in the year but no real consistency. Perhaps a showdown with this course that fits his profile could spark some life for the 49-year-old.

Secondly, we have the odds-on favorite, Emiliano Grillo. He’s racked up a lot of air miles over the past month but if jetlag doesn’t catch up with him, he looks like a great fit here in the Dominican Republic.

Super Simple Specialist Ratings

The goal of this article is to isolate course fit, to see who should outperform their baseline.

However, anyone with common sense knows that baseline talent (and current form) can’t be ignored when handicapping golf.

Combining Baseline Strokes Gained with Current Form and Specialist Rating, we get a Top 20 ranking that looks like this:

Emiliano Grillo
Patrick Rodgers
Retief Goosen
Scott Piercy
Martin Flores
Trey Mullinax
Chris Wood
Brice Garnett
Troy Merritt
Rafael Campos
Cameron Tringale
Tom Lovelady
Joel Dahmen
Ricky Barnes
Lanto Griffin
Fabrizio Zanotti
Adam Schenk
Keith Mitchell
Corey Conners
Jim Furyk

Looks like a pretty good-looking list to me. I would probably drop Goosen and Flores a bit while booston Mitchell and Furyk a bit.

Best of luck everyone!

Below is a table with the full specialist data. Any fields with a 0 in them mean the sample size is not large enough. There is a minimum of 30 rounds to qualify for each angle.

The SG:TOTAL column is a baseline performance measure (since 2014). It is time-weighted so more recent results count for more than finishes from years ago.

HISTORY column is a weighted performance metric based on course history. I’ve made small adjustments for sample sizes but be sure to check on number of course rounds before blindly following this number.

FORM looks at the total strokes gained, adjusted to field strength, over the last 8 weeks (PGA TOUR and European Tour).

Josh Culp (futureoffantasy)

Josh didn’t own a set of golf clubs until after college but his love for the game now grows exponentially. He uses in-depth statistical analysis while trying to avoid the landmines that come with using traditional, outdated PGA stats. He can be found elsewhere writing for Rotoworld and Future of Fantasy. He can be found on twitter @futureoffantasy.
