Searching for a Specialist: Dell Technologies Championship

As the second leg of the FedExCup Playoffs rolls around, we head back to a familiar TPC Boston venue. It’s a course with generous fairways, bentgrass greens, and plenty of long holes to entice golfers to hit driver.

We will take a look at who fits the course this week in Boston, but first let’s review how last week went. It was boom-or-bust for our six specialists last week. Schneiderjans and Grace both went splat, as they missed the cut. Then you have Paul Casey, Matt Kuchar, Chez Reavie, and Robert Streb, who all finished inside the top 10!

Looking at this week’s course, we will look at a very similar set of angles as we did last week for Glen Oaks Club. We are going to look at Performance on Bentgrass Greens, Easy-to-Hit Fairways, Driver-Heavy Courses, Strong Field Events, and Summer Events.

Here we go…

Bentgrass Greens

This week’s course features bentgrass greens, but unlike last week they try to eliminate any poa that tries to pop up and infiltrate the bentgrass, so we will look at just bentgrass performance this week as opposed to last week where we looked at BENT and POA.

The Top 10 Bentgrass Specialists are:

Xander Schauffele (2.377 sg:bentgrass vs. 1.185 sg:total)
Kevin Tway (0.752 sg:bentgrass vs. 0.285 sg:total)
Chad Campbell (1.463 sg:bentgrass vs. 1.004 sg:total)
Chris Stroud (1.074 sg:bentgrass vs. 0.724 sg:total)
Ian Poulter (1.631 sg:bentgrass vs. 1.281 sg:total)
Danny Lee (1.357 sg:bentgrass vs. 1.025 sg:total)
Daniel Berger (1.96 sg:bentgrass vs. 1.637 sg:total)
Rickie Fowler (2.544 sg:bentgrass vs. 2.224 sg:total)
Russell Henley (1.507 sg:bentgrass vs. 1.221 sg:total)
David Lingmerth (1.197 sg:bentgrass vs. 0.926 sg:total)

Holy Schauffele! His sample is still pretty low on bentgrass greens, but the early indicators suggest he loves the bentgrass.

On the other side, we have Lucas Glover, who continues to only show up on bermuda. Add in his scary injury from last week, and I will easily take a pass.

Easy-to-Hit Fairways

Since 2010 the field has averaged 66 percent of fairways hit at TPC Boston.

That is despite the fact that plenty of drivers are hit. The fairways are just that generous. That means a lot more attacking from the short grass, which is where some golfers really thrive.

Let’s see who likes these types of layouts…

The 10 Easy Fairway Specialists:

Xander Schauffele (1.981 sg:easy fairways vs. 1.185 sg:total)
Louis Oosthuizen (2.484 sg:easy fairways vs. 1.704 sg:total)
Kelly Kraft (0.955 sg:easy fairways vs. 0.206 sg:total)
Jordan Spieth (3.228 sg:easy fairways vs. 2.668 sg:total)
Justin Rose (2.88 sg:easy fairways vs. 2.356 sg:total)
Cameron Smith (1.224 sg:easy fairways vs. 0.766 sg:total)
Emiliano Grillo (1.866 sg:easy fairways vs. 1.443 sg:total)
Hideki Matsuyama (2.72 sg:easy fairways vs. 2.315 sg:total)
Chris Stroud (1.078 sg:easy fairways vs. 0.724 sg:total)
Patrick Rodgers (0.977 sg:easy fairways vs. 0.632 sg:total)

Despite his reputation for being inaccurate off the tee, Spieth is actually one of the best at keeping the ball near the fairway on his misses. When you give him a few extra yards on each side of the fairway then he’s going to hit a very high clip of fairways.

If you had to pick one angle to target for Louis Oosthuizen, this would be it. He loves taking on generous fairways. Over his last 15 events on easy fairways, he’s posted top-20 worthy performance in 10 of them (67%). That percentage is fourth best in the field, behind only elite names like Rory McIlroy, Jordan Spieth, and Jason Day.

Strong Field Events

This week is the first event of the Playoffs, so you know the field is loaded with top-tier names. There are five golfers missing the event, but otherwise it’s the top 100 golfers this year. You better bring your A game.

The Top 10 Strong Field Specialists are:

Ollie Schniederjans (1.581 sg:strong vs. 1.084 sg:total)
Sung Kang (1.538 sg:strong vs. 1.044 sg:total)
Camilo Villegas (1.064 sg:strong vs. 0.675 sg:total)
Kyle Stanley (1.097 sg:strong vs. 0.717 sg:total)
Kevin Chappell (1.726 sg:strong vs. 1.385 sg:total)
C.T. Pan (0.961 sg:strong vs. 0.632 sg:total)
Chez Reavie (1.48 sg:strong vs. 1.163 sg:total)
David Lingmerth (1.207 sg:strong vs. 0.926 sg:total)
Jhonattan Vegas (1.092 sg:strong vs. 0.812 sg:total)
Jim Herman (0.958 sg:strong vs. 0.723 sg:total)

The Hatless Wonder still shows up on this list despite last week’s dud. That tells us that it wasn’t just a case of tiny sample size, he actually does pick up his game when the field gets tougher.

Kevin Chappell is a very interesting name here. He’s gaining nearly two strokes per round against tough fields (strength of field adjusted). In the FedExCup Playoffs in particular, he also crushes. He’s put up five top-20 worthy finishes in the Playoffs in his last 11 ttries (45%) which is 14th best in the field.

Driver-Heavy Courses

Listening to the superintendent speak about the course this week, he said the course is forgiving and that players won’t be losing balls this week. He said that golfers will be hitting drivers everywhere around here due to the forgiveness and length of the course.

Let’s see who shines when drivers are a key part of the course strategy.

The Top 10 Driver-Heavy Specialists:

Grayson Murray (1.629 sg:driver-heavy vs. 0.734 sg:total)
Xander Schauffele (1.741 sg:driver-heavy vs. 1.185 sg:total)
Kevin Tway (0.836 sg:driver-heavy vs. 0.285 sg:total)
Justin Thomas (2.349 sg:driver-heavy vs. 1.802 sg:total)
Rickie Fowler (2.762 sg:driver-heavy vs. 2.224 sg:total)
Hudson Swafford (1.25 sg:driver-heavy vs. 0.807 sg:total)
Kyle Stanley (1.154 sg:driver-heavy vs. 0.717 sg:total)
Chez Reavie (1.589 sg:driver-heavy vs. 1.163 sg:total)
Louis Oosthuizen (2.129 sg:driver-heavy vs. 1.704 sg:total)
Robert Streb (1.529 sg:driver-heavy vs. 1.156 sg:total)

Plenty of big-hitting bombers on the list above. Then you also have Chez Reavie on the list, which goes to show there is always more than one way to tackle a course.

This area is where Rickie Fowler shines. Since 2014 he’s posted 15 finishes on driver-heavy courses that were worthy of a top 5 if we adjusted the field to be TOUR average. That is four more than anyone else over that same time frame. Fowler is very comfy with the big stick in hand.

Performance in the Summer

Whether it is grass types, weather, or scheduling, some guys just peak in the summer months.

Let’s see how outperforms there baseline in the summer…

The Top 10 Summer Specialists:

Xander Schauffele (2.29 sg:summer vs. 1.185 sg:total)
Si Woo Kim (1.368 sg:summer vs. 0.777 sg:total)
Rickie Fowler (2.666 sg:summer vs. 2.224 sg:total)
Jason Day (3.13 sg:summer vs. 2.706 sg:total)
Jhonattan Vegas (1.231 sg:summer vs. 0.812 sg:total)
C.T. Pan (1.022 sg:summer vs. 0.632 sg:total)
Ollie Schniederjans (1.462 sg:summer vs. 1.084 sg:total)
Kevin Tway (0.66 sg:summer vs. 0.285 sg:total)
Kelly Kraft (0.562 sg:summer vs. 0.206 sg:total)
Paul Casey (2.433 sg:summer vs. 2.092 sg:total)

Once again, we have a (smaller sample) Schauffele leaping off the page.

Si Woo Kim and Jason Day are both funny cases. They are elite in the summer but they both have been known to be a WD risk.

Baseline Performance

We’ve highlighted our top 10 for each angle and after the dust settles we have four golfers that remained positive in ALL FIVE angles.

This week there is just one name that falls outside the top 70 in terms of baseline perfomance. That makes Hudson Swafford a good course fit but a play reserved for GPPs only.

The Specialists

Kevin Chappell
Paul Casey
Robert Streb

kevin-chappell-300x200

Our specialist this week is Kevin Chappell!

We already highlighted his huge leap in performance when fields get tougher, but he also grades out stellar in the summertime, on easy-to-hit fairways, and driver-heavy courses. Lastly, he shows a slight lean to bentgrass greens, so everything lines up as a good course fit.

Paul Casey arrives with knockout form and a runner-up finish here last year. Nobody needs convincing that he’s a good play. He will be very heavily owned.

Lastly, Robert Streb has been showing signs of life again recently with a pair of top 10s over the last few months. He also finished T9 here in his 2014 debut, returning in 2015 to post a T39. His number one angle appears to be driver-heavy courses, which is certainly the case this week at TPC Boston, which has generous fairways that allow you to be aggressive on the tee box.

The Anti-Specialists

The specialists above are positive in all five angles, but which golfers are the opposite and show a poor course fit?

Rafa Cabrera Bello
Wesley Bryan
Brendan Steele
Luke List
Jason Dufner
Kevin Na

We’ve seen Wesley Bryan crush it on less-than-driver courses, so it makes sense that he would struggle on these longer layouts. He is the one golfer I would truly be surprised if he found his way into the top 25 this week.

As for the other five, I would suggest reduced ownership this week.

Viewing the Data

I don’t want this article to just be a narrowed down list each week with only the specialists looking capable of success. So, I’ve decided to lay out a few different ways that you could read the table below create additional relevancy to the data.

First, let’s have a look at how many times a golfer grades out as +0.25 or better in any category. Over the course of four rounds, this suggests they could play a whole shot better than their baseline. This is just another way to finding course fit without requiring perfection like the specialist method does.

4 times: Xander Schauffele
3 times: Rickie Fowler Jhonattan Vegas, Kyle Stanley, Kevin Tway

On the flip side, who grades out as -0.25 or worse in three different categories? That would be Rafa Cabrera Bello, Pat Perez, Wesley Bryan, and Rod Pampling.

Another way you could view the table, is to incorporate baseline performance and form into the equation.

A simple equation could be RANK OF BASELINE PERFORMANCE + RANK OF FORM + RANK OF SPECIALIST RATING. That would create a top-15 list that looks like this:

Rickie Fowler
Paul Casey
Rory Mcilroy
Matt Kuchar
Dustin Johnson
Jordan Spieth
Xander Schauffele
Hideki Matsuyama
Jason Day
Brooks Koepka
Zach Johnson
Patrick Reed
Kevin Chappell
Tony Finau
Louis Oosthuizen

Not a bad list, right? This method includes that course-fit element but it also heavily weights baseline skill and current form which are both extremely important pieces of the pie. Hope this helps, and if anyone has any other methodologies of how they view the data, I’d love to hear those.

Best of luck everyone!

Below is a table with the full specialist data. Any fields with a 0 in them mean the sample size is not large enough. There is a minimum of 25 rounds to qualify for each angle.

The SG:Total column is a baseline performance measure (since 2014),

Form looks at the total strokes gained, adjusted to field strength, over the last 10 weeks (PGA & Euro).

Josh Culp (futureoffantasy)

Josh didn’t own a set of golf clubs until after college but his love for the game now grows exponentially. He uses in-depth statistical analysis while trying to avoid the landmines that come with using traditional, outdated PGA stats. He can be found elsewhere writing for Rotoworld and Future of Fantasy.
