Searching for a Specialist: Dell Technologies Championship

Keeping our eyes on the prize as the 2017-18 season winds down, let’s turn our attention toward TPC Boston for this week’s Dell Tech Championship.

In this process, we will look for golfers that might be a good course fit. We call these specialists.

Reviewing last week, our specialists were Xander Schauffele, Ryan Palmer, and Zach Johnson. We hit the whole spectrum with this one. Palmer crushed it with a top 5 at low ownership while ZJ was as mediocre as it gets with a T40 and Xander missed the cut on the number.

This week we look at performance on Bentgrass Greens, Long Courses, Strong Field Events, Easy-to-Hit Fairways, and Performance in the Summer.

You may notice a lot of similarities with last week’s search, so don’t be surprised if some of the same names pop this week.

Here we go …

Bentgrass Greens

Staying in the Northeast for a few more weeks, we have another bentgrass course on our hands.

Last week, the surfaces were primarily poa annua, but this week they are primarily bentgrass. A lot of the same golfers pop on both, but we can isolate our search to just bentgrass performance this week.

The 10 Bentgrass Specialists:

Satoshi Kodaira (0.803 sg:bentgrass vs. -0.06 sg:total)
Abraham Ancer (1.355 sg:bentgrass vs. 0.808 sg:total)
Joel Dahmen (1.54 sg:bentgrass vs. 0.995 sg:total)
Peter Uihlein (1.836 sg:bentgrass vs. 1.333 sg:total)
Brooks Koepka (2.636 sg:bentgrass vs. 2.271 sg:total)
Whee Kim (0.931 sg:bentgrass vs. 0.572 sg:total)
Anirban Lahiri (1.369 sg:bentgrass vs. 1.059 sg:total)
Michael Kim (0.9 sg:bentgrass vs. 0.613 sg:total)
Justin Rose (2.985 sg:bentgrass vs. 2.707 sg:total)
Bronson Burgoon (1.151 sg:bentgrass vs. 0.876 sg:total)

Quantity: The golfers that have the most strokes gained on bentgrass since 2014 are Jordan Spieth, Matt Kuchar, Dustin Johnson, Jason Day, and Tony Finau.

justin-rose-800x480

Brooks and J Rose are both elite in this department, both approaching the 3.0 mark in the adjusted strokes gained department.

J.J. Spaun continues to lag behind on bentgrass making him fade for me until he at least comes back to the proper side of -0.5 differential.

Long Courses

TPC Boston has three par 3s over 200 yards and five par 4s over 460 yards. It is LONG.

The Top 10 Long Course Specialists:

Ryan Palmer (2.021 sg:long vs. 1.321 sg:total)
Keith Mitchell (1.52 sg:long vs. 0.999 sg:total)
Patrick Cantlay (2.747 sg:long vs. 2.342 sg:total)
Jason Kokrak (1.684 sg:long vs. 1.283 sg:total)
Brooks Koepka (2.645 sg:long vs. 2.271 sg:total)
Cameron Smith (1.516 sg:long vs. 1.159 sg:total)
Nick Watney (1.466 sg:long vs. 1.113 sg:total)
Tyrrell Hatton (2.227 sg:long vs. 1.892 sg:total)
Andrew Landry (0.986 sg:long vs. 0.68 sg:total)
Patrick Reed (2.23 sg:long vs. 1.986 sg:total)

Quantity: Golfers with the most weighted strokes gained on long courses since 2014 are Dustin Johnson, Jason Day, Patrick Reed, Paul Casey, and Jordan Spieth.

Palmer popped in this department last week and he only improved his case with a top 5 last week.

I pointed out five golfers that showed -0.5 or worse in the long-course area last week. They all finished T40 or worse, three of them missing the cut. This week Ted Potter Jr, Michael Kim, and Byeong Hun An still find themselves below the -0.5 mark.

Strong Fields

As the Playoffs continue, we will continue to see strong fields.

Some golfers elevate their game in these big spots. Others are just happy they kept their card and they are glad to be competing this late in the season.

The Top 10 Strong Field Specialists:

Tom Hoge (1.092 sg:strong vs. 0.675 sg:total)
Bryson DeChambeau (2.05 sg:strong vs. 1.658 sg:total)
Kyle Stanley (1.751 sg:strong vs. 1.368 sg:total)
Xander Schauffele (1.841 sg:strong vs. 1.496 sg:total)
Chesson Hadley (1.334 sg:strong vs. 1.002 sg:total)
Peter Uihlein (1.638 sg:strong vs. 1.333 sg:total)
Nick Watney (1.385 sg:strong vs. 1.113 sg:total)
Jhonattan Vegas (1.201 sg:strong vs. 0.991 sg:total)
Matt Kuchar (2.322 sg:strong vs. 2.134 sg:total)
Aaron Wise (1.659 sg:strong vs. 1.485 sg:total)

Quantity: Most weighted strokes gained against strong fields since 2014 are Dustin Johnson, Jordan Spieth, Rory McIlroy, Jason Day, and Justin Rose.

Schauffele has quickly established himself as a big-game hunter, but Bryson now has a win in the Playoffs and a win at the Memorial. Definitely a good sign for his future.

Easy-to-Hit Fairways

The field has averaged 66 percent of fairways hit here at TPC Boston (since 2010).

That puts it in the same conversation as Augusta National, TPC Kuala Lumpur, Bay Hill, TPC River Highlands, Muirfield Village, and many others when it comes to ease of hitting fairways.

For some golfers they just need that relief of knowing they don’t need to be perfect off the tee in order to hit a good amount of fairways.

The Top 10 Easy Fairway Specialists:

Louis Oosthuizen (2.479 sg:easy fairways vs. 1.922 sg:total)
Russell Henley (2.024 sg:easy fairways vs. 1.531 sg:total)
Xander Schauffele (1.988 sg:easy fairways vs. 1.496 sg:total)
Patrick Reed (2.436 sg:easy fairways vs. 1.986 sg:total)
Michael Kim (1.053 sg:easy fairways vs. 0.613 sg:total)
Brice Garnett (0.884 sg:easy fairways vs. 0.47 sg:total)
Jordan Spieth (3.164 sg:easy fairways vs. 2.756 sg:total)
Bronson Burgoon (1.282 sg:easy fairways vs. 0.876 sg:total)
Kelly Kraft (0.839 sg:easy fairways vs. 0.435 sg:total)
Tommy Fleetwood (2.787 sg:easy fairways vs. 2.383 sg:total)

Quantity: Most weighted strokes gained on easy-to-hit fairways since 2014 are Jordan Spieth, Dustin Johnson, Hideki Matsuyama, Patrick Reed, and Jason Day.

Tommy Flushwood shows up on the top-10 list. If you give him relatively easy corridors then he’s going to go pin-seeking.

Summer Season

During these summer months we see a lot of bentgrass greens, warm weather, and plenty of big events.

Ideally, we’d like to see three or more seasons before we make concrete judgments in this department.

The Top 10 Summer Specialists:

Xander Schauffele (2.066 sg:summer vs. 1.496 sg:total)
Abraham Ancer (1.329 sg:summer vs. 0.808 sg:total)
Joel Dahmen (1.433 sg:summer vs. 0.995 sg:total)
C.T. Pan (1.483 sg:summer vs. 1.049 sg:total)
Tiger Woods (2.369 sg:summer vs. 1.971 sg:total)
Stewart Cink (1.772 sg:summer vs. 1.394 sg:total)
Zach Johnson (2.237 sg:summer vs. 1.885 sg:total)
Kelly Kraft (0.752 sg:summer vs. 0.435 sg:total)
Matt Kuchar (2.417 sg:summer vs. 2.134 sg:total)
Jason Day (3.05 sg:summer vs. 2.806 sg:total)

Quantity: Most weighted strokes gained in the summer since 2014 are Jason Day, Jordan Spieth, Dustin Johnson, Matt Kuchar, and Paul Casey.

Golfers like Cink, ZJ, Kuchar, and Day are the most impressive on the top-10 list above. We have five summers worth of results and they are still showing a strong lean in the direction of playing in the summer.

The opposite can be said for CH3, Steele, and Kizzire. All three generally peak in the fall and early winter events.

Baseline Performance

We now have a list of six golfers that are positive in all of the angles above.

However, there is one golfer who has a long-term performance index that falls outside the top 70 in this field. That makes him a risky play, even with the great course fit. That golfer would be Kevin Tway.

The Specialists

Xander Schauffele
Brooks Koepka
Kevin Chappell
Zach Johnson
Paul Casey

The specialist this week is Xander Schauffele!

xander-schauffele-800x480

After a missed cut on the number last week, he grades out as the top specialist again! It takes a lot more than one mediocre week to ruin his splits in the summer and against strong fields.

It should be a good week for X-Man to bounce back and we should get him at lower ownership this week.

Koepka won the PGA Championship when he was labeled a specialist, so let’s see if he continues to perform when he should.

Chappy’s putting is tough to stomach at the moment, but this looks like a course that could snap him out of that funk.

ZJ arrives with plenty of summer form so he should be good for another top 30.

Casey does not have that form, but his long-term performance is well above his DFS price point this week. Combine that with his course fit and it should be a good week to jump back on the train.

The Anti-Specialists

We have a few golfers that qualify as specialists this week, but who does the opposite, grading out negatively in all of the angles?

Patton Kizzire
Brendan Steele
Charles Howell III
Scott Piercy
Jason Dufner
Rafa Cabrera Bello
Billy Horschel
Ollie Schniederjans
Webb Simpson

No need to blindly fade these guys, especially the names near the bottom of the list. Heck, Billy and Webb have both won here. Check the rest of their course history and it’s pretty spotty which is what I’d expect more of this week.

If you were already on the fence about any of these golfers, this could be the bump to say they are worth fading.

Super Simple Specialist Ratings

The goal of this article is to isolate course fit, to see who should outperform their baseline.

However, anyone with common sense knows that baseline talent (and current form) can’t be ignored when handicapping golf.

Combining Baseline Strokes Gained with Current Form and Specialist Rating, we get a Top 20 ranking that looks like this:

Brooks Koepka
Dustin Johnson
Patrick Cantlay
Tony Finau
Rory Mcilroy
Justin Thomas
Jason Day
Tommy Fleetwood
Patrick Reed
Zach Johnson
Adam Scott
Jordan Spieth
Tiger Woods
Justin Rose
Jon Rahm
Tyrrell Hatton
Matt Kuchar
Webb Simpson
Kevin Na
Hideki Matsuyama

Big-hitting Brooks grades out as #1 here. Similar to last week, Xander falls outside the top 20 here but still provides plenty of upside.

Best of luck everyone!

Below is a table with the full specialist data. Any fields with a 0 in them mean the sample size is not large enough. There is a minimum of 30 rounds to qualify for each angle.

The SG:TOTAL column is a baseline performance measure (since 2014). It is time-weighted so more recent results count for more than finishes from years ago.

HISTORY column is a weighted performance metric based on course history. I’ve made small adjustments for sample sizes but be sure to check on number of course rounds before blindly following this number.

FORM looks at the total strokes gained, adjusted to field strength, over the last 8 weeks (PGA TOUR and European Tour).

SIMPLE RATING looks at SGTotal, FORM, and SPECIALIST RATING to create a simple rating that includes course fit but doesn’t overweight it.

Josh Culp (futureoffantasy)

Josh didn’t own a set of golf clubs until after college but his love for the game now grows exponentially. He uses in-depth statistical analysis while trying to avoid the landmines that come with using traditional, outdated PGA stats. He can be found elsewhere writing for Rotoworld and Future of Fantasy.
