Searching for a Specialist: Farmers Insurance Open
Welcome back to another specialist search.
Last week we had three of the five specialists find top 50s, one inside the top 20, but two of them missed the cut (Hoffman & Lovemark). Overall, a very forgettable week for the specialists.
This week we have a plethora of angles to look at. I generally narrow down the search to three or four angles, but this week there are six angles that were strongly correlated with success here at Torrey Pines.
I’m also going to experiment with a new layout. Instead of the elimination style that’s generally featured, I’m going to provide the top-10 list for each angle. That means a golfer can show up on one of the angles even if they’ve already been eliminated from a previous angle. This way we can see the true top 10 at each angle and then we can bring it all together at the end to see who is still left standing.
The angles that popped off the page this week were performance on Par 72 Courses, Tough-to-Hit Fairways, Long Courses, Poa Annua Greens, California Courses, and Difficult Courses in general.
We’ve got a boatload of data to look at this week, so strap yourself in!
Par 72 Courses
When par 72s come around we generally know there will be plenty of par 5s to feast on. Both courses at Torrey Pines have four par 5s, so that’s certainly true this week.
For the most part this favors big hitters, but golfers that are good with their long irons or great course managers can also take advantage of the extra par 5s.
The Top 10 Par 72 Specialists are:
Brandon Hagy (0.924 sg:par72 vs. 0.318 sg:total)
Patton Kizzire (1.373 sg:par72 vs. 0.802 sg:total)
Marc Leishman (1.837 sg:par72 vs. 1.401 sg:total)
Andrew Loupe (0.426 sg:par72 vs. 0.058 sg:total)
Chad Collins (0.567 sg:par72 vs. 0.201 sg:total)
Jonas Blixt (0.837 sg:par72 vs. 0.477 sg:total)
Smylie Kaufman (1.09 sg:par72 vs. 0.74 sg:total)
Francesco Molinari (1.932 sg:par72 vs. 1.588 sg:total)
Lucas Glover (0.879 sg:par72 vs. 0.536 sg:total)
Luke List (1.586 sg:par72 vs. 1.25 sg:total)
Like I said before, big hitters often gain an advantage on the par 72 layouts, and this list adds fuel to that claim.
Some of these are smaller sample size, but that’s not the case for Leishman. Over his last 29 starts on par 72 venues, he’s cracked the top 25 in 12 of them (41%). When you consider his baseline top 25% in other events over that stretch is under 30%, it becomes clear we want to target him on par 72s.
Tough-to-Hit Fairways
Since 2010 the field has averaged less than 51% of fairways hit at the Farmers Insurance Open. That is right at the bottom of courses played on the annual rota.
When fairways are tough to hit, bombers often (not always) gain an edge. If half the field is missing the fairway, then you might as well smack it as far as possible and have a shorter club in.
The 10 Hard Fairway Specialists remaining:
K.J. Choi (1.642 sg:hard fairways vs. 0.617 sg:total)
Patton Kizzire (1.52 sg:hard fairways vs. 0.802 sg:total)
Smylie Kaufman (1.45 sg:hard fairways vs. 0.74 sg:total)
Tyrone Van Aswegen (0.748 sg:hard fairways vs. 0.149 sg:total)
Harris English (1.816 sg:hard fairways vs. 1.293 sg:total)
Cameron Percy (0.877 sg:hard fairways vs. 0.355 sg:total)
Camilo Villegas (1.092 sg:hard fairways vs. 0.573 sg:total)
Ben Crane (0.862 sg:hard fairways vs. 0.375 sg:total)
Seung-yul Noh (1.083 sg:hard fairways vs. 0.601 sg:total)
J.J. Henry (0.425 sg:hard fairways vs. -0.054 sg:total)
This list isn’t as chalk-full of bombers as the par 72 list. That’s because extreme accuracy can also pay off when it comes to tough fairways. If you can manage to hit 70% of fairways while the field is averaging 50%, then you give yourself a nice leg up.
Gary Woodland just missed out on this list, but he’s found top 25s in 13 of his last 21 starts when the field average 56% or fewer fairways hit. His distance certainly helps in that regard since he’s able to club down and use iron on some holes while shorter hitters are trying to squeeze their driver onto the fairway.
This is where we lose Francesco Molinari. He’s a world-class talent, but the length of Torrey Pines South does not work in his favor this week.
Long Courses
Speaking of length, the South Course at Torrey Pines stretches out past 7,600 yards. This course is played three times (assuming a golfer survives the cut).
That means we want to target golfers that up their game the longer the course gets.
The Top 10 Long Course Specialists:
Jimmy Walker (2.177 sg:long vs. 1.533 sg:total)
Chad Collins (0.827 sg:long vs. 0.201 sg:total)
Brandt Snedeker (2.085 sg:long vs. 1.463 sg:total)
Charley Hoffman (1.73 sg:long vs. 1.158 sg:total)
Nick Taylor (0.804 sg:long vs. 0.314 sg:total)
Jason Kokrak (1.535 sg:long vs. 1.055 sg:total)
Will MacKenzie (0.767 sg:long vs. 0.293 sg:total)
Kyle Reifers (1.119 sg:long vs. 0.647 sg:total)
Patton Kizzire (1.254 sg:long vs. 0.802 sg:total)
J.B. Holmes (1.79 sg:long vs. 1.358 sg:total)
Kizzire makes his third appearance already. His baseline performance is nothing to write home about, but this appears to be a layout that could really suit his eye.
Poa Annua Greens
Since last year the North Course at Torrey Pines has been renovated and that includes a switch from poa annua to bentgrass greens.
The South Course still has poa annua greens, though. With 3-of-4 rounds being played on poa annua, I will definitely be giving it a strong look. Feel free to remove this angle from your research if you think the one round of pure bentgrass will throw a wrench into things.
The 10 Poa Annua Specialists:
K.J. Choi (1.911 sg:poa vs. 0.617 sg:total)
Scott Stallings (1.227 sg:poa vs. 0.173 sg:total)
Kyle Reifers (1.691 sg:poa vs. 0.647 sg:total)
Martin Laird (1.892 sg:poa vs. 0.863 sg:total)
Derek Fathauer (1.39 sg:poa vs. 0.4 sg:total)
Dustin Johnson (3.249 sg:poa vs. 2.499 sg:total)
Will MacKenzie (0.996 sg:poa vs. 0.293 sg:total)
Jon Curran (1.26 sg:poa vs. 0.561 sg:total)
Morgan Hoffmann (1.1 sg:poa vs. 0.439 sg:total)
J.J. Henry (0.561 sg:poa vs. -0.054 sg:total)
Dustin Johnson’s performance is through the roof when it comes to courses with poa annua greens. Over his last 11 starts with poa greens, he’s found top 5s in seven of them!
Danny Lee has yet to solve the riddle of poa, as he’s 0-for-14 in terms of finding a top 25 on poa annua greens.
California Courses
Performance in the state of California will generally correlate nicely with poa annua performance, but it doesn’t always pick up everything.
So, let’s throw in all results from California since 2014, and see who shines:
The 10 California Specialists:
K.J. Choi (1.911 sg:cali vs. 0.617 sg:total)
Martin Laird (1.984 sg:cali vs. 0.863 sg:total)
Scott Stallings (1.248 sg:cali vs. 0.173 sg:total)
Adam Hadwin (1.778 sg:cali vs. 0.953 sg:total)
J.B. Holmes (2.139 sg:cali vs. 1.358 sg:total)
Jimmy Walker (2.233 sg:cali vs. 1.533 sg:total)
Andres Gonzales (0.767 sg:cali vs. 0.082 sg:total)
Jon Curran (1.24 sg:cali vs. 0.561 sg:total)
Harris English (1.827 sg:cali vs. 1.293 sg:total)
D.A. Points (0.308 sg:cali vs. -0.221 sg:total)
In this particular field we see four overlapping names when it comes to the top 10 Cali specialists and top 10 Poa specialists.
Martin Laird certainly stands out as a fan of the Golden State. He’s rattled off eight top 25s in his last 12 starts in Cali.
Hard Courses
Early in the 2016-17 season we’ve seen a ton of easy-peasy courses. That won’t be the case this week since the field has averaged 73.2 strokes per round at Torrey Pines South (since 2010).
There won’t be any 59s shot on the South Course this week, at least there shouldn’t be.
At the same time this means we can rely less on form and look at some long-term stats on tough tracks instead.
The 10 Hard Course Specialists:
John Huh (1.608 sg:hard vs. 0.522 sg:total)
Bryson DeChambeau (1.678 sg:hard vs. 0.805 sg:total)
Dustin Johnson (3.229 sg:hard vs. 2.499 sg:total)
Andrew Loupe (0.762 sg:hard vs. 0.058 sg:total)
Sung Kang (1.333 sg:hard vs. 0.678 sg:total)
Jonas Blixt (1.066 sg:hard vs. 0.477 sg:total)
Jason Kokrak (1.638 sg:hard vs. 1.055 sg:total)
D.A. Points (0.347 sg:hard vs. -0.221 sg:total)
Kevin Streelman (1.381 sg:hard vs. 0.815 sg:total)
Robert Garrigus (0.909 sg:hard vs. 0.367 sg:total)
It’s still very early in DeChambeau’s career, but the early results point toward him favoring tough tracks. That bodes well for his future in major championships.
Andrew Loupe is another interesting name. He’s been leading/co-leading after R1 in six events already in his relatively short career, and one of those came at this venue last year. Unfortunately, he opens on the South Course this year, or else he’d be a prime candidate for FRL.
On the flip side, a red flag pops up for Hideki Matsuyama on tough courses. Looking at his last 22 starts when the field has averaged 0.75 strokes over par (or worse), Matsuyama has missed the cut in eight of them (27%)! His miss-cut percentage in all other events during that stretch is just 11%, so that’s quite the decline. He does have three top 10s on tough courses, so the upside is there, but the is a lot more risk involved than you’d want for a $11,200 golfer.
Baseline Performance
We now have a list of 11 potential specialists, but we can narow that down by looking at current form.
If a golfer hasn’t teed it up over the last 10 weeks or if they are losing strokes to the field over that time frame, then we can eliminate them from our specialist search. That includes:
J.B. Holmes
Aaron Baddeley
Jonas Blixt
K.J. Choi
Retief Goosen
Consider these GPP-only plays. The course fit is good for them, but there is no reason to trust them in cash given their lack of form.
The Specialists
Dustin Johnson
Jimmy Walker
Harris English
Kevin Streelman
Brendan Steele
Michael Thompson
Our specialist this week is Dustin Johnson!
Sometimes the specialists show strong course history but that’s not the case for DJ this week. He owns just one top 15 here in eight tries. For a venue that fits him so perfectly, I would expect that to change by week’s end.
Jimmy Walker does carry the course history gene with him this week. He’s rattled off four top 10s over his last five trips to Torrey Pines.
Harris English posted a runner-up finish here (2015) so we know he can handle this layout.
Streelman finished in third here last year. That was on the heels of four straight missed cuts here. I guess we should consider him a boom-or-bust specialist.
The Anti-Specialists
Looking for the opposite of our specialists, these golfers have negative numbers in all four angles!
Troy Merritt
Kevin Chappell
Geoff Ogilvy
Graham DeLaet
Kevin Chappell has a poor track record here so I am fine fading him. He does have Nappy Factor in his favor, though.
Graham DeLaet doesn’t have the best course fit on paper, but he’s posted two top 10s here in five tries. When his game is on, he can take it low on ANY course. Given his 2016 form, it would be surprising to see him find the top 10 this week.
Best of luck everyone!
Below is a table with the full specialist data. Any fields with a 0 in them mean the sample size is not large enough. There is a minimum of 25 rounds to qualify for each angle.
The SG:Total column is a baseline performance measure (since 2014),
Form looks at the performance over the last 10 weeks (PGA & Euro). Given the holiday break, form is still rounding back into shape.
