Searching for a Specialist: Farmers Insurance Open

The PGA TOUR stays in California for another week, but it will be a much different test of golf.

Before we see who fits the courses this week, let’s review last week. We had Kizzire and Swafford post middling results with Haas completely flopping. Not the best week for our specialists, but we can bounce back before we head to Phoenix next week.

For Torrey Pines this week we will look at Performance on Poa Annua Greens, Performance on Hard Fairways, Performance in California, Performance on Coastal Courses, and finish up with Performance on Driver-Heavy Courses.

Here we go …

Performance on Poa Annua Greens

The Torrey Pines South Course greens are poa annua which is known to get rather bumpy as the day progresses.

This course will host three of the four rounds for golfers this week.

Let’s see who does well to manage their expectations and not overreact to good putts getting knocked offline.

The 10 Poa Specialists:

Martin Laird (2.053 sg:poa vs. 1.111 sg:total)
Shane Lowry (2.506 sg:poa vs. 1.604 sg:total)
Scott Stallings (1.322 sg:poa vs. 0.43 sg:total)
K.J. Choi (1.466 sg:poa vs. 0.647 sg:total)
Jhonattan Vegas (1.601 sg:poa vs. 0.798 sg:total)
Derek Fathauer (0.972 sg:poa vs. 0.346 sg:total)
Sung Kang (1.679 sg:poa vs. 1.064 sg:total)
J.B. Holmes (1.965 sg:poa vs. 1.423 sg:total)
Jonas Blixt (1.037 sg:poa vs. 0.519 sg:total)
Matt Jones (1.429 sg:poa vs. 0.913 sg:total)

Martin Laird sits atop the list here so let’s dive into his poa results since 2014. He’s piled up NINE top 20s on poa annua greens over his last 13 starts. There is certainly something about these green surfaces that fit him well.

A few names to possible swerve include Danny Lee, Alex Cejka, Shawn Stefani, and John Huh.

Stefani has no top 35s in 10 poa starts, missing the cut in five of those.

Cejka hasn’t found a top 30 in his last 12 on poa annua.

Danny Lee doesn’t have a single top 25 over his last 18 on poa annua greens, missing the cut in 10 of those starts.

Lastly, John Huh has posted just one top 30 in his last 17 starts on poa annua greens, with 11 missed cuts in that stretch.

Rickie Fowler is someone who shows up near the bottom, but I wouldn’t worry too much. His sample on poa is relatively small since 2014 and three of his starts have come after long travel. Don’t let his huge number sway you if you really like him in all other areas this week.

Hard-to-Hit Fairways

The fairways at Torrey Pines are some of the hardest to hit on an annual basis.

Another way to look at this: The length of the course requires golfers to hit more drivers, which leads to more missed fairways.

The Top 10 Hard Fairway Specialists are:

K.J. Choi (1.47 sg:hard fairways vs. 0.647 sg:total)
Grayson Murray (1.214 sg:hard fairways vs. 0.595 sg:total)
Jon Rahm (2.869 sg:hard fairways vs. 2.367 sg:total)
Tom Hoge (0.912 sg:hard fairways vs. 0.423 sg:total)
Harris English (1.672 sg:hard fairways vs. 1.222 sg:total)
Brett Stegmaier (0.6 sg:hard fairways vs. 0.169 sg:total)
Tyrone Van Aswegen (0.791 sg:hard fairways vs. 0.389 sg:total)
Charley Hoffman (1.882 sg:hard fairways vs. 1.483 sg:total)
James Hahn (1.211 sg:hard fairways vs. 0.814 sg:total)
Ollie Schniederjans (1.466 sg:hard fairways vs. 1.077 sg:total)

K.J. Choi has remarkable consistency on these type of tracks, missing the cut in just five of his last 21 on hard-to-hit fairways. Unfortunately, four of those have come since the start of 2017. His results are fading with his age.

On the negative side, Anirban Lahiri hasn’t posted a single top 25 in 13 starts on hard-to-hit fairway courses. He played in the EurAsia Cup a few weeks ago, but this will be his first stroke-play event played since the OHL Classic in November. Let’s let him shake off the rust before investing.

California Courses

There is a lot of overlap between poa annua success and Cali success, but it’s not a 1-for-1 link. There are poa greens outside of California, for example.

Isolating our results to California lets us know who is comfortable here on the West Coast.

The Top 10 California Specialists:

K.J. Choi (1.682 sg:cali vs. 0.647 sg:total)
Scott Stallings (1.314 sg:cali vs. 0.43 sg:total)
Adam Hadwin (1.956 sg:cali vs. 1.117 sg:total)
Sangmoon Bae (1.514 sg:cali vs. 0.734 sg:total)
Martin Laird (1.888 sg:cali vs. 1.111 sg:total)
J.B. Holmes (2.172 sg:cali vs. 1.423 sg:total)
Harris English (1.928 sg:cali vs. 1.222 sg:total)
Brendan Steele (2.195 sg:cali vs. 1.542 sg:total)
Jonas Blixt (1.074 sg:cali vs. 0.519 sg:total)
Matt Jones (1.449 sg:cali vs. 0.913 sg:total)

Brendan Steele is someone who catches my eye here. He is a Cali native and his results back up the comfort level. He’s finished top 50 in 16 of his last 18 in Cali, with five of those doubling as top 10s (two wins).

Coastal Courses

Coastal Courses do not fit everyone’s eye. There are some golfers that love the added importance of judging wind and some that hate it.

You will often see a good correlation with links specialists, as well.

The Top 10 Coastal Specialists:

Kelly Kraft (1.383 sg:coastal vs. 0.309 sg:total)
J.J. Spaun (1.841 sg:coastal vs. 0.955 sg:total)
Ollie Schniederjans (1.879 sg:coastal vs. 1.077 sg:total)
Rob Oppenheim (0.903 sg:coastal vs. 0.24 sg:total)
Luke Donald (1.793 sg:coastal vs. 1.137 sg:total)
Scott Stallings (1.019 sg:coastal vs. 0.43 sg:total)
Nicholas Lindheim (0.458 sg:coastal vs. -0.12 sg:total)
Gary Woodland (2.12 sg:coastal vs. 1.547 sg:total)
Cameron Smith (1.442 sg:coastal vs. 0.924 sg:total)
Patrick Rodgers (1.199 sg:coastal vs. 0.695 sg:total)

J.J. Spaun is appealing here, posting top 20s in 50% of his 10 coastal starts.

Ollie Schniederjans is another who is not affected by the coastal winds, posting top 15s in 5-of-10 coastal starts.

On the flip side, Cam The Man Tringale has just one top 20 over his last 20 coastal starts. Kevin Tway has yet to post a top 30 in 13 coastal starts. Those may be two to avoid.

Driver-Heavy Courses

Torrey Pines South is nearly 7,700 yards and the renovated North Course has some beef to it now, as well.

Golfers will need to hit plenty of drivers and be dialed in with the big stick when they do.

The Top 10 Driver-Heavy Specialists:

Smylie Kaufman (1.405 sg:driver-heavy vs. 0.649 sg:total)
Steve Wheatcroft (0.974 sg:driver-heavy vs. 0.3 sg:total)
Harris English (1.81 sg:driver-heavy vs. 1.222 sg:total)
Robert Streb (1.693 sg:driver-heavy vs. 1.116 sg:total)
Jon Rahm (2.91 sg:driver-heavy vs. 2.367 sg:total)
Martin Flores (1.186 sg:driver-heavy vs. 0.715 sg:total)
Shane Lowry (2.07 sg:driver-heavy vs. 1.604 sg:total)
J.B. Holmes (1.873 sg:driver-heavy vs. 1.423 sg:total)
Michael Thompson (0.878 sg:driver-heavy vs. 0.477 sg:total)
Geoff Ogilvy (0.881 sg:driver-heavy vs. 0.493 sg:total)

It’s not surprising to see a lot of big hitters show up near the top of this category.

A few names to avoid here might be Cam Smith and Whee Kim. Smith has missed cuts in 9-of-12 starts on driver-heavy venues and Whee Kim has missed the cut in 8-of-13. Not the odds we want in our favor.

Baseline Performance

Like always, our last step is to weed out the huge longshots.

To do that we will eliminate anyone that falls outside the top 70 in Weighted Performance or anyone that hasn’t picked up a top 30 over the last four months. Not too strict, but definitely helps avoid the golfers that should be reserved for GPPs only:

J.B. Holmes
Scott Stallings
Michael Thompson

The Specialists

Gary Woodland
Matt Jones
Kevin Streelman
Keegan Bradley

The specialist this week is Gary Woodland!

Woodland was last seen giving gamers a heart attack at the Sony Open. He ended up soaring through that cut line and posting a top 10. On top of his numbers showing a strong course fit, he also has plenty of quotes about his love for Torrey Pines:

gary-woodland-550x330

“The South Course is one of my favorite golf courses we play all year. Most holes go left-to-right” and “I like to hit the driver left-to-right. And the holes really that go right-to-left are the short holes that allow me to hit iron off the tee. So it’s a golf course that suits me very well off the tee box, it gives me a chance to be aggressive.”

Matt Jones popped a little form back home, but his last top 30 on the PGA TOUR came at last year’s St. Jude. You might want to drop him into GPP-only status if you don’t want to rely on his Australian form.

Streelman sets up shop in Scottsdale, Arizona, so he’s very comfortable here on the West Coast, despite going to school at Duke.

Keegan Bradley is someone most DFSers are scared to own. I don’t think he’s generating much buzz this week, so you probably won’t need much to own more than the field in the Keegan department. He also has Nappy Factor on his side since he became a first-time father in December.

Anti-Specialists

Francesco Molinari
David Hearn
Danny Lee
Cameron Tringale
Troy Merritt
Alex Cejka

Francesco Molinari is the big name here. From a baseline perspective, he’s in the upper tier of this field. However, he doesn’t have distance to lean on if he doesn’t bring his A game to Torrey Pines. He is also arriving off a long layoff from competition, unlike last year. Despite his low price and T14 last year, the Italian is someone I would consider fading this week.

Super Simple Specialist Ratings

The goal of this article is to isolate course fit, to see who should outperform their baseline.

However, anyone with common sense knows that baseline talent (and current form) can’t be ignored when handicapping golf.

Combining Baseline Strokes Gained with Current Form and Specialist Rating, we get a Top 20 ranking that looks like this:

Jon Rahm
Gary Woodland
Harris English
Charles Howell III
Jhonattan Vegas
Ollie Schniederjans
Brandon Harkins
Stewart Cink
Tony Finau
Brendan Steele
Kevin Streelman
Keegan Bradley
Lucas Glover
James Hahn
Shane Lowry
Adam Hadwin
Patrick Cantlay
J.B. Holmes
Matt Jones
Tom Hoge

A few names pop out due to early-year form. Guys like Brandon Harkins and Tom Hoge, for example. I wouldn’t trust their recent results too much. The FORM column will continue to sort itself out as the year moves on. Having a big window of missing results from the holiday break is sure to distort it in the short term.

Best of luck everyone!

Below is a table with the full specialist data. Any fields with a 0 in them mean the sample size is not large enough. There is a minimum of 30 rounds to qualify for each angle.

The SG:Total column is a baseline performance measure (since 2014).

WEIGHTED column is another column for baseline performance, but it’s time-weighted so more recent results count for more.

Form looks at the total strokes gained, adjusted to field strength, over the last 8 weeks (PGA, Web, and Euro).

Josh Culp (futureoffantasy)

Josh didn’t own a set of golf clubs until after college but his love for the game now grows exponentially. He uses in-depth statistical analysis while trying to avoid the landmines that come with using traditional, outdated PGA stats. He can be found elsewhere writing for Rotoworld and Future of Fantasy. He can be found on twitter @futureoffantasy.
