Searching for a Specialist: Farmers Insurance Open

Heading to Torrey Pines this week, the field is in for a tough test of golf.

That should be a bit different than what we’ve seen in the fall and early 2019. Golfers that have been feasting on easy courses will be in for a rude awakening this week. Let’s dive through the numbers to see which golfers should like the tougher track.

First, let’s review last week. We couldn’t maintain our torrid specialist pace as Charles Howell III popped early but ultimately settled for a top 35 last week at the Desert Classic. On the year the specialists are now 3-for-3 with two top 10s.

This week we look at Performance on Bent/Poa Greens, Par 72 Courses, Driver-Heavy Courses, West Coast Events, and Long Courses in general.

Here we go…

Performance on Bent/Poa Greens

We get out first taste of poa annua this week as Torrey South features poa. That means three rounds of poa and the North Course features relatively fresh bentgrass (just 3 years old).

Some golfers can’t stand the poa while others know how to survive.

The 10 Bent/Poa Specialists:

Stephan Jaeger (0.822 sg:bent/poa vs. 0.376 sg:total)
Mackenzie Hughes (1.138 sg:bent/poa vs. 0.692 sg:total)
Sam Ryder (1.48 sg:bent/poa vs. 1.071 sg:total)
Scott Stallings (1.08 sg:bent/poa vs. 0.735 sg:total)
Alex Prugh (0.597 sg:bent/poa vs. 0.305 sg:total)
Bronson Burgoon (1.163 sg:bent/poa vs. 0.879 sg:total)
Tony Finau (2.341 sg:bent/poa vs. 2.077 sg:total)
Brandon Harkins (1.278 sg:bent/poa vs. 1.015 sg:total)
Joaquin Niemann (1.758 sg:bent/poa vs. 1.497 sg:total)
Chris Stroud (0.848 sg:bent/poa vs. 0.595 sg:total)

Quantity: The golfers that have the most strokes gained on Bent/Poa Greens since 2014 are Jordan Spieth, Tony Finau, Jason Day, Justin Rose, and Patrick Reed.

Reed is one that will enjoy the bentgrass greens on the North Course, “Any time you can get bentgrass greens, that just means one less factor. You don’t have all that really grainy Bermuda.”

Par 72 Courses

We have a pair of par 72s this week which means plenty of par 5s.

The South Course still doesn’t yield much scoring but the North Course is very inviting, especially the par 5s. Let’s see who might enjoy those two extra par 5s, compared to a par 70.

The Top 10 Par 72 Specialists:

Cody Gribble (0.679 sg:par72 vs. 0.108 sg:total)
Brandon Hagy (1.12 sg:par72 vs. 0.698 sg:total)
Kiradech Aphibarnrat (1.627 sg:par72 vs. 1.223 sg:total)
Carlos Ortiz (0.817 sg:par72 vs. 0.415 sg:total)
Ryan Palmer (1.667 sg:par72 vs. 1.267 sg:total)
Brendan Steele (1.755 sg:par72 vs. 1.436 sg:total)
Rory McIlroy (3.085 sg:par72 vs. 2.767 sg:total)
Marc Leishman (2.34 sg:par72 vs. 2.023 sg:total)
Keegan Bradley (1.932 sg:par72 vs. 1.636 sg:total)
Si Woo Kim (1.198 sg:par72 vs. 0.916 sg:total)

Quantity: Golfers with the most weighted strokes gained on par 72 courses since 2014 are Justin Rose, Jason Day, Hideki Matsuyama, Tony Finau, and Keegan Bradley.

Based on the list above, it’s clear that ball-striking reigns supreme on par 72s but then you have someone like Barnrat poke his head on the list. He leans heavily on his putter.

Driver-Heavy Courses

Torrey Pines South plays at 7,700 yards. There are six par 4s that play at 450 yards or longer.

That means loads and loads of drivers.

The Top 10 Driver-Heavy Specialists:

Carlos Ortiz (1.289 sg:driver-heavy vs. 0.415 sg:total)
Ollie Schniederjans (1.484 sg:driver-heavy vs. 0.889 sg:total)
Jason Kokrak (1.872 sg:driver-heavy vs. 1.285 sg:total)
Sung Kang (1.361 sg:driver-heavy vs. 0.777 sg:total)
Martin Laird (1.891 sg:driver-heavy vs. 1.308 sg:total)
Nick Watney (1.709 sg:driver-heavy vs. 1.144 sg:total)
James Hahn (1.559 sg:driver-heavy vs. 1.032 sg:total)
Rory Sabbatini (1.336 sg:driver-heavy vs. 0.825 sg:total)
Harris English (1.579 sg:driver-heavy vs. 1.075 sg:total)
Jonas Blixt (0.951 sg:driver-heavy vs. 0.464 sg:total)

Quantity: Most weighted strokes gained on Driver-Heavy Courses since 2014 are Hideki Matsuyama, Jordan Spieth, Rickie Fowler, Justin Rose, and Jason Day.

The specialist list for this angle brings a lot of erratic results. Approach plays well on any venue but when you need to bomb-and-gouge, your play often gets restricted to particular courses.

Performance in the West

Part of the early schedule is playing out West.

This brings a uniqueness when it comes to climate and grasses.

Some golfers are very comfy in these conditions while others are just counting down the days til the Florida Swing arrives.

The Top 10 West Coast Specialists:

Talor Gooch (1.825 sg:west vs. 0.889 sg:total)
Brandon Harkins (1.786 sg:west vs. 1.015 sg:total)
Scott Stallings (1.365 sg:west vs. 0.735 sg:total)
Martin Laird (1.905 sg:west vs. 1.308 sg:total)
Harris English (1.671 sg:west vs. 1.075 sg:total)
Brendan Steele (2.021 sg:west vs. 1.436 sg:total)
Jon Rahm (3.063 sg:west vs. 2.503 sg:total)
Alex Prugh (0.865 sg:west vs. 0.305 sg:total)
Gary Woodland (2.343 sg:west vs. 1.787 sg:total)
Carlos Ortiz (0.897 sg:west vs. 0.415 sg:total)

Quantity: Most weighted strokes gained in the West since 2014 are Brendan Steele, Charles Howell III, Jordan Spieth, Jon Rahm, and Brandt Snedeker.

A majority of these golfers have ties to California or Arizona so this part of the schedule is their favorite time of the year.

Talor Gooch popped last week in the desert and may establish himself as a West Coast specialist if he keeps up this pace as his sample increases.

Alex Prugh is another interesting name because all of his top finishes have come out West. That includes a pair of top 5s here at the Farmers.

Long Courses

I’ve talked about the monster that is Torrey Pines South but in case you forgot it’s a 7,700-yard layout.

Over the last 5 years it’s played to an average of 73.48 so we are really looking as a course that is labeled incorrectly. It might be a Par 73 at best. It would be demoralizing if you took a scratch golfer here and forced them to play from the tournament tees.

The Top 10 Long Course Specialists:

Carlos Ortiz (1.326 sg:long vs. 0.415 sg:total)
Sam Burns (1.377 sg:long vs. 0.752 sg:total)
Nicholas Lindheim (0.605 sg:long vs. 0.044 sg:total)
Jonas Blixt (1.001 sg:long vs. 0.464 sg:total)
Sung Kang (1.236 sg:long vs. 0.777 sg:total)
Jason Kokrak (1.743 sg:long vs. 1.285 sg:total)
Keith Mitchell (1.587 sg:long vs. 1.155 sg:total)
Ryan Palmer (1.668 sg:long vs. 1.267 sg:total)
Trey Mullinax (1.143 sg:long vs. 0.759 sg:total)
Sean O’Hair (1.311 sg:long vs. 0.935 sg:total)

Quantity: Most weighted strokes gained on Long Courses since 2014 are Justin Rose, Jason Day, Hideki Matsuyama, Rickie Fowler, and Patrick Reed.

Reed is a funny name to show up on the quantity list. He’s not the longer hitter but his elite short game allows him to contend on longer courses, very similar to a Snedeker type. The longer the course, the easier it is to get out of position. That often puts a premium on scrambling skills. A big part of playing long courses is the distance but don’t forget about the around-the-green studs.

Baseline Performance

Looking for golfers that are positive in all five angles, we still have a whopping 17 golfers left standing in our search.

However, we don’t want to take a risk of spotty long-term skill or a golfer with no recent form.

Golfers that don’t have the form or long-term skill to trust:

Carlos Ortiz
Martin Laird
Sung Kang
Jonas Blixt
Ryan Palmer
J.B. Holmes
James Hahn
Jhonattan Vegas
Hunter Mahan
Bill Haas
Patrick Rodgers
Matt Jones
Cameron Tringale

The course fit element is here for all of these guys, but we don’t need to force them in.

The top two names really do catch my eye. I will have my fair share of Ortiz and Laird this week. Laird has a pair of top 10s here and Ortiz has really shown an uptick on performance on lengthy, driver-heavy courses. He was also a top-10 golfer on the WEB last year.

I think Blixt is an interesting darkhorse, but not someone I would trust. Possibly a GPP sprinkle or two.

The Specialist

Harris English
Hudson Swafford

These two are clones in appearance and they also grade out similarly when it comes to course fit.

They both struggled in 2018 but are showing signs of life over their last 10 starts or so.

English is 6-for-6 at this event with a trio of top 15s to his name.

Swafford hasn’t done as much with his course fit, posting a 1-for-4 record here at Torrey Pines with the highlight being a T13 in 2016.

The Anti-Specialists

We’ve established the great course fits but who doesn’t fit the layout as well?

Daniel Berger
Brian Harman
Alex Cejka
Jason Day

Okay, Jason Day is a two-time champ here so this is a case where you need to use common sense to say he shouldn’t be an auto fade here. If we want to dive into his performance here, he has drastically underperformed outside of his two wins. Overall he is 6-for-9 here with five of his finishes being T35 or worse. I suppose it could be a possible fade but also a risky one. His baseline is top 5 in the field so even if you take some off that baseline, it’s hard to imagine his expectations dropping too far.

Super Simple Specialist Ratings

The goal of this article is to isolate course fit, to see who should outperform their baseline.

However, anyone with common sense knows that baseline talent (and current form) can’t be ignored when handicapping golf.

Combining Baseline Strokes Gained with Current Form and Specialist Rating, we get a Top 20 ranking that looks like this:

Jon Rahm
Rory Mcilroy
Gary Woodland
Marc Leishman
Brandt Snedeker
Charles Howell III
Patrick Reed
Sungjae Im
Patrick Cantlay
Branden Grace
Xander Schauffele
Justin Rose
Harris English
Jason Kokrak
Keegan Bradley
Hideki Matsuyama
Jason Day
Cameron Champ
Hudson Swafford
Daniel Berger

There are a few interesting names that crack the list. First is Jason Kokrak who is a monster hitter so that makes sense that he’d grade out well at Torrey Pines. Second is Daniel Berger. We just saw him show up on the anti-specialist list but this goes to show that course fit isn’t everything. Even with course fit against him, Berger still grades out as a decent play.

Best of luck everyone!

Below is a table with the full specialist data. Any fields with a 0 in them mean the sample size is not large enough. There is a minimum of 30 rounds to qualify for each angle.

The SG:TOTAL column is a baseline performance measure (since 2014). It is time-weighted so more recent results count for more than finishes from years ago.

HISTORY column is a weighted performance metric based on course history. I’ve made tiny adjustments for sample sizes, but be sure to check on number of course rounds before blindly following this number.

FORM looks at the total strokes gained, adjusted to field strength, over the last 6 weeks (PGA TOUR and European Tour).

SIMPLE RATING looks at SGTotal, FORM, and SPECIALIST RATING to create a simple rating that includes course fit but doesn’t overweight it.

Josh Culp (futureoffantasy)

Josh didn’t own a set of golf clubs until after college but his love for the game now grows exponentially. He uses in-depth statistical analysis while trying to avoid the landmines that come with using traditional, outdated PGA stats. He can be found elsewhere writing for Rotoworld and Future of Fantasy. He can be found on twitter @futureoffantasy.
