Searching for a Specialist: FedEx St. Jude Classic

Heading to the heat of Memphis before the season’s second major, let’s dig into some historical stats to see who might be a good course fit here at TPC Southwind.

Last week was a good example of how small decisions (in this case by me) can lead to drastically different results. Originally I had four angles picked out that pointed to Kyle Stanley as the specialist. A few last-minute tweaks pointed the specialist needle in Xander Schauffele’s direction and that didn’t go so well. Stanley still graded out well after the final tweaks so it goes to show that we should still monitor the overall rankings and not just rely on the final specialist list to deliver.

For the St. Jude Classic we will look at Performance on Bermuda, Performance in the Heat, Performance against Weak Fields, Performance on Less-than-Driver Courses, and Performance on Tough-to-Hit Greens.

Here we go …

Performance on Bermuda

Heading back to bermuda, let’s reset the slate on putting form. That is especially true if a golfer popped on the greens last week at the lightning fast, bentgrass surfaces at Muirfield Village.

The 10 Bermuda Specialists:

Grayson Murray (1.414 sg:bermuda vs. 0.774 sg:total)
Charlie Beljan (-0.787 sg:bermuda vs. -1.355 sg:total)
Kevin Chappell (2.098 sg:bermuda vs. 1.539 sg:total)
Billy Horschel (1.76 sg:bermuda vs. 1.251 sg:total)
Greg Chalmers (0.417 sg:bermuda vs. -0.078 sg:total)
Luke List (2.1 sg:bermuda vs. 1.625 sg:total)
John Merrick (0.441 sg:bermuda vs. -0.012 sg:total)
Dominic Bozzelli (0.66 sg:bermuda vs. 0.253 sg:total)
Byeong Hun An (1.897 sg:bermuda vs. 1.564 sg:total)
Peter Malnati (0.639 sg:bermuda vs. 0.314 sg:total)

Quantity: At the top of the total strokes gained on bermuda since 2014 we have Billy Horschel, Dustin Johnson, Luke List, Daniel Berger, and Chris Kirk.

Chappell looks lost in terms of current form so maybe this is a perfect venue for him to find his groove.

Robert Garrigus is at the very bottom of this column. He’s more than a shot worse per round on bermuda. Probably one to leave off your teams this week.

Performance in Hot Weather

It’s no surprise when heading to Memphis in June that heat is going to be in the forecast.

Over the last four years the average temperature here has been around 87 degrees. This week looks very similar.

The Top 10 Hot Weather Specialists:

Cody Gribble (0.948 sg:hot weather vs. 0.076 sg:total)
Brian Gay (1.642 sg:hot weather vs. 0.834 sg:total)
Ricky Barnes (1.291 sg:hot weather vs. 0.583 sg:total)
Tim Herron (0.182 sg:hot weather vs. -0.506 sg:total)
Ken Duke (0.411 sg:hot weather vs. -0.172 sg:total)
Johnson Wagner (1.212 sg:hot weather vs. 0.689 sg:total)
Billy Horschel (1.768 sg:hot weather vs. 1.251 sg:total)
Danny Lee (1.393 sg:hot weather vs. 0.952 sg:total)
Jon Curran (0.766 sg:hot weather vs. 0.356 sg:total)
Kevin Tway (1.355 sg:hot weather vs. 0.946 sg:total)

Quantity: Golfers with the most weighted strokes gained in hot weather since 2014 are Brooks Koepka, Billy Horschel, Chad Campbell, Danny Lee, and Tony Finau.

Is it just a coincidence that 28 of the top 29 in this category have a baseline under 1 stroke gained per round? There are a few theories as to why lower-end golfers get a boost but whatever the real reason is, we shouldn’t be too concerned if some of our targets aren’t top 30 golfers in long-term performance.

Weak Field Performance

With the U.S. Open taking place next week, a lot of the big names will skip Memphis. The heat likely plays a bit of a role since it’s more draining than an average week.

With more than a dozen pre-tournament WDs, the field has gotten even weaker.

The Top 10 Weak Field Specialists:

Grayson Murray (1.687 sg:weak vs. 0.774 sg:total)
Billy Horschel (1.941 sg:weak vs. 1.251 sg:total)
Austin Cook (1.895 sg:weak vs. 1.38 sg:total)
Daniel Chopra (-0.637 sg:weak vs. -1.125 sg:total)
Richy Werenski (0.892 sg:weak vs. 0.438 sg:total)
Scott Piercy (1.554 sg:weak vs. 1.11 sg:total)
Nick Taylor (1.131 sg:weak vs. 0.689 sg:total)
Andrew Putnam (0.986 sg:weak vs. 0.552 sg:total)
Brooks Koepka (2.563 sg:weak vs. 2.138 sg:total)
Smylie Kaufman (0.238 sg:weak vs. -0.167 sg:total)

Quantity: Most weighted strokes gained against weak fields since 2014 are Charles Howell III, Chad Campbell, Kevin Chappell, Tony Finau, and Chris Kirk.

Grayson Murray posted eight top 10s in 17 Web.com Tour starts in 2016 and he also won the alternate-field Barbasol. Those big finishes haven’t really translated to the bigger stage but that’s not an issue this week as a thin field is lined up in Memphis.

Less-than-Driver Courses

TPC Southwind is littered with water hazards. That alone is enough to lead golfers to club down on many holes.

Add narrowing fairways, fairway bunkers, and nasty bermuda rough.

The Top 10 LT Driver Specialists:

Kiradech Aphibarnrat (1.808 sg:less-than-driver vs. 1.125 sg:total)
Wesley Bryan (1.349 sg:less-than-driver vs. 0.686 sg:total)
Stephan Jaeger (0.574 sg:less-than-driver vs. 0.015 sg:total)
Joel Dahmen (1.157 sg:less-than-driver vs. 0.642 sg:total)
Dominic Bozzelli (0.764 sg:less-than-driver vs. 0.253 sg:total)
Roberto Diaz (0.099 sg:less-than-driver vs. -0.35 sg:total)
Eric Axley (0.152 sg:less-than-driver vs. -0.182 sg:total)
J.T. Poston (1.156 sg:less-than-driver vs. 0.843 sg:total)
Adam Schenk (0.692 sg:less-than-driver vs. 0.394 sg:total)
Nicholas Lindheim (0.363 sg:less-than-driver vs. 0.089 sg:total)

This list is loaded with plodders. These golfers don’t like to grip it and rip it. Instead, they just try to keep up off the tee and then thrive from fairway to pin.

Quantity: Most weighted strokes gained on less-than-driver courses since 2014 are Charles Howell III, William McGirt, Chris Kirk, Stewart Cink, and Dustin Johnson.

Stephan Jaeger cracks the list. Mr. 58 hasn’t earned anything better than a T20 on the PGA TOUR but he does his best work with scoring clubs in his hand. This could be the perfect venue for him to finally pop on the big stage.

Hard-to-Hit Greens

This angle proved to be a good pointer last week as some golfers continue to play well in the Spring.

We have three more weeks of Spring golf so let’s see who pops here.

The Top 10 Hard GIR Specialists:

Dominic Bozzelli (1.65 sg:hard GIR vs. 0.253 sg:total)
Steve Wheatcroft (0.929 sg:hard GIR vs. 0.244 sg:total)
Cameron Percy (0.927 sg:hard GIR vs. 0.434 sg:total)
Ken Duke (0.32 sg:hard GIR vs. -0.172 sg:total)
Ricky Barnes (1.063 sg:hard GIR vs. 0.583 sg:total)
Steve Stricker (2.325 sg:hard GIR vs. 1.882 sg:total)
Brett Stegmaier (0.574 sg:hard GIR vs. 0.143 sg:total)
Daniel Summerhays (1.282 sg:hard GIR vs. 0.857 sg:total)
Matt Every (0.031 sg:hard GIR vs. -0.39 sg:total)
Kelly Kraft (0.744 sg:hard GIR vs. 0.372 sg:total)

Quantity: Most weighted strokes gained on Hard GIR courses since 2014 are Dustin Johnson, Phil Mickelson, Charl Schwartzel, Tony Finau, and Brooks Koepka.

Mr. Bozzelli has an insane split in this category. His HARD GIR performance is more than 1.33 strokes better per round when you compare it to his baseline performance. What’s the catch? Well, he’s a second-year pro so that sample includes just 10 events. Still, three of his four career-best finishes have come on tough GIR tracks. That makes him an appealing darkhorse even if his form is far off the map.

Baseline Performance

We now have a list of six golfers that are positive in all five angles.

However, we can filter out four of them due to concerns with their short-term or long-term form. Those golfers are Sam Saunders, Ben Martin, Steve Wheatcroft, and Ken Duke.

In this field, I would strongly consider Saunders and Martin as GPP options while Duke and Wheatcroft are still super longshots.

The Specialist

Billy Horschel
Daniel Berger

The specialist this week is Billy Horschel!

billy-horschel-550x330

The Florida Gator is 5-for-7 here at TPC Southwind but he’s rattled off four straight top 10s since 2013.

That is the same year that Horschel broke out and became a much different golfer. In 2011 he finished 170th in the FedExCup race and was 143rd the following year. Since then, he’s been 66th or better every season.

When you break down the course it makes sense that Horschel would love it. It rewards accuracy but also allows aggressive play to be rewarded. Horschel ranks 25th in driving accuracy but also ranks top 10 in Going for the Green – Birdie or Better %.

When he attacks, he usually capitalizes.

In addition to Horschel, we have Daniel Berger who clearly likes the course, given he’s won the event during his only two appearances here at TPC Southwind.

Anti-Specialists

Harris English
Brian Davis
Brandt Snedeker
Dustin Johnson
Hunter Mahan
Robert Garrigus
J.B. Holmes
Ryan Palmer

These golfers all grade out as NEGATIVE in all five angles.

That doesn’t mean we need to auto fade them. After all, Harris English and Dustin Johnson have both won here.

DJ has a lot of wiggle room when it comes to his long-term performance versus most of the field.

Harris English went to prep school in the state and considers this a semi-home game since he played a lot of amateur events in the state.

Brandt Snedeker could also fit in that same category as English since he attended Vandy and now resides in Tennessee.

The rest of the list I am fine leaving off my list of targets.

Super Simple Specialist Ratings

The goal of this article is to isolate course fit, to see who should outperform their baseline.

However, anyone with common sense knows that baseline talent (and current form) can’t be ignored when handicapping golf.

Combining Baseline Strokes Gained with Current Form and Specialist Rating, we get a Top 20 ranking that looks like this:

Billy Horschel
Byeong Hun An
Kiradech Aphibarnrat
Austin Cook
Steve Stricker
Daniel Berger
Brooks Koepka
Danny Lee
Joaquin Niemann
Kevin Chappell
Grayson Murray
Charl Schwartzel
Chris Kirk
Shane Lowry
Brian Gay
Scott Piercy
J.T. Poston
Ben Martin
Ben Crane
Keith Mitchell

This list led to a lot of strong plays last week including Bryson, Ben An, and Cantlay. This week we notice Dustin Johnson missing from the list. If we dive into the long-term performance stats, though, we see that his monstrous lead in performance isn’t accounted for by simple rankings. We should still consider him a top contender, even if the course isn’t a great fit, on paper.

Best of luck everyone!

Below is a table with the full specialist data. Any fields with a 0 in them mean the sample size is not large enough. There is a minimum of 30 rounds to qualify for each angle.

The SG:TOTAL column is a baseline performance measure (since 2014). It is time-weighted so more recent results count for more than finishes from years ago.

HISTORY column is a weighted performance metric based on course history. I’ve made small adjustments for sample sizes but be sure to check on number of course rounds before blindly following this number.

FORM looks at the total strokes gained, adjusted to field strength, over the last 8 weeks (PGA TOUR and European Tour).

Josh Culp (futureoffantasy)

Josh didn’t own a set of golf clubs until after college but his love for the game now grows exponentially. He uses in-depth statistical analysis while trying to avoid the landmines that come with using traditional, outdated PGA stats. He can be found elsewhere writing for Rotoworld and Future of Fantasy. He can be found on twitter @futureoffantasy.
