Searching for a Specialist: Fort Worth Invitational

After a week of no course data, we head back to Colonial Country Club which has decades worth of data.

Let’s dive through those numbers to see who might be a good course fit this week.

Reviewing last week’s specialists, Shawn Stefani poked his head into contention before a slight Sunday fade. Overall, he easily eclipsed his baseline. However, Ben Martin was the second specialist and he continued his run of disappointing form.

For Colonial, let’s look at Performance on Bentgrass, Performance in Texas, Performance on Par 70 Courses, Less-than-Driver Courses, and Performance in the Spring.

Here we go …

Performance on Bentgrass

Colonial features bermuda from tee-to-green but bentgrass on the putting surfaces. So, let’s have a look to see who improves their performance when taking on bentgrass greens.

The Top 10 Bentgrass Specialists:

Smylie Kaufman (0.93 sg:bentgrass vs. -0.059 sg:total)
Robert Garrigus (1.377 sg:bentgrass vs. 0.665 sg:total)
Tim Herron (-0.066 sg:bentgrass vs. -0.702 sg:total)
David Lingmerth (1.432 sg:bentgrass vs. 1.005 sg:total)
Chad Campbell (1.328 sg:bentgrass vs. 0.914 sg:total)
Kevin Tway (1.266 sg:bentgrass vs. 0.86 sg:total)
Rickie Fowler (2.871 sg:bentgrass vs. 2.465 sg:total)
Brooks Koepka (2.468 sg:bentgrass vs. 2.073 sg:total)
Danny Lee (1.371 sg:bentgrass vs. 0.992 sg:total)
Seamus Power (1.283 sg:bentgrass vs. 0.941 sg:total)

At the top of the list, we have Smylie, who is far, far off the beaten path when it comes to current form.

Quantity: At the top of the total strokes gained on bentgrass since 2014 we have Jordan Spieth, Rickie Fowler, Matt Kuchar, Charley Hoffman, and Justin Rose.

Spieth usually talks about bermuda being his preference, but the numbers suggest that he’s better on bentgrass.

At the bottom of the list, we have Ted Potter, Jr. and J.J. Spaun holding up the rear. They are nearly a shot worse per round on bentgrass when compared to their baseline.

Performance in Texas

Comfort in the Lone Star State should not be ignored. Some guys like the heat. Some guys like when the wind picks up. Others are glad to be leaving the poa of the West Coast and the water of the Florida Swing.

The Top 10 Texas Specialists:

Kevin Tway (2.162 sg:Texas vs. 0.86 sg:total)
Sean O’Hair (2.248 sg:Texas vs. 1.064 sg:total)
Russell Henley (2.613 sg:Texas vs. 1.476 sg:total)
Kevin Kisner (2.558 sg:Texas vs. 1.528 sg:total)
Jimmy Walker (2.324 sg:Texas vs. 1.555 sg:total)
Sung Kang (1.589 sg:Texas vs. 0.844 sg:total)
Danny Lee (1.654 sg:Texas vs. 0.992 sg:total)
Chris Kirk (1.802 sg:Texas vs. 1.248 sg:total)
Ben Crane (1.102 sg:Texas vs. 0.612 sg:total)
Nick Taylor (1.199 sg:Texas vs. 0.73 sg:total)

A LOT of Texas residents on the list which tells us experience and repetition is key to play in these conditions.

Quantity: Golfers with the most weighted strokes gained in Texas since 2014 are Jordan Spieth, Jimmy Walker, Charley Hoffman, Matt Kuchar, and Sean O’Hair.

O’Hair and Hoffman provide a lot of value this week compared to those other three which are priced in the top tier.

Par 70 Courses

With just two par 5s on the scorecard, golfers need to find other ways to score.

Golfers that lack patience can sometimes push too hard when they don’t have those easy, par-5 birdie or better looks.

The Top 10 Par 70 Specialists:

Kelly Kraft (1.132 sg:par70 vs. 0.365 sg:total)
Joel Dahmen (1.269 sg:par70 vs. 0.516 sg:total)
David Lingmerth (1.671 sg:par70 vs. 1.005 sg:total)
Xander Schauffele (2.145 sg:par70 vs. 1.486 sg:total)
Webb Simpson (2.437 sg:par70 vs. 1.914 sg:total)
Jim Furyk (2.131 sg:par70 vs. 1.645 sg:total)
Tim Herron (-0.223 sg:par70 vs. -0.702 sg:total)
Danny Lee (1.436 sg:par70 vs. 0.992 sg:total)
Robert Streb (1.33 sg:par70 vs. 0.887 sg:total)
Matt Kuchar (2.604 sg:par70 vs. 2.177 sg:total)

Most of the list is made up of plodders, although Xander certainly doesn’t fit that bill.

Quantity: Most weighted strokes gained on par 70s since 2014 are Jordan Spieth, Webb Simpson, Matt Kuchar, Kevin Kisner, and Jason Dufner.

That list is loaded with golfers that crush with short irons and wedges. When you remove a couple par 5s, that also means you remove a couple approach shots from over 200 yards. That generally favors these type of golfers that prefer to score from mid-range.

Less-than-Driver Courses

This number of drivers hit here will depend on the weather and the style of each individual golfer.

However, Colonial is not a course where pounding it 300+ is going to give you an edge. It brings too much trouble into play, which leads to more irons and fairway metals on the tee box.

The Top 10 LT Driver Specialists:

Wesley Bryan (1.427 sg:less-than-driver vs. 0.692 sg:total)
Joel Dahmen (0.956 sg:less-than-driver vs. 0.516 sg:total)
J.J. Spaun (1.361 sg:less-than-driver vs. 0.922 sg:total)
Jason Dufner (1.924 sg:less-than-driver vs. 1.549 sg:total)
Ted Potter, Jr. (0.945 sg:less-than-driver vs. 0.575 sg:total)
Kevin Kisner (1.835 sg:less-than-driver vs. 1.528 sg:total)
J.T. Poston (1.055 sg:less-than-driver vs. 0.777 sg:total)
Kelly Kraft (0.628 sg:less-than-driver vs. 0.365 sg:total)
Rod Pampling (0.391 sg:less-than-driver vs. 0.137 sg:total)
Scott Piercy (1.383 sg:less-than-driver vs. 1.137 sg:total)

Again, more golfers that lean on short irons and wedges.

Quantity: Most weighted strokes gained on less-than-driver courses since 2014 are Jordan Spieth, Webb Simpson, Kevin Kisner, Matt Kuchar, and Jason Dufner.

Another quantity list that Spieth leads. Surprise, surprise.

Near the bottom of the LT Driver column, we have mashers like Smylie, Rahm, and Tway. They are all capable of contending but their biggest asset is taken away from them when they head to courses like this.

Performance in the Spring

Golf courses play much different in the fall and winter compared to the spring and summer.

Narrowing in on Springtime, we can find golfers that start to peak after they leave the West Coast.

The Top 10 Spring Specialists:

Si Woo Kim (1.686 sg:spring vs. 0.799 sg:total)
Nicholas Lindheim (0.802 sg:spring vs. -0.044 sg:total)
Ted Potter, Jr. (1.396 sg:spring vs. 0.575 sg:total)
Joel Dahmen (1.229 sg:spring vs. 0.516 sg:total)
Kevin Tway (1.528 sg:spring vs. 0.86 sg:total)
Grayson Murray (1.504 sg:spring vs. 0.89 sg:total)
Abraham Ancer (1.043 sg:spring vs. 0.435 sg:total)
J.J. Spaun (1.487 sg:spring vs. 0.922 sg:total)
Brooks Koepka (2.568 sg:spring vs. 2.073 sg:total)
Jimmy Walker (2.02 sg:spring vs. 1.555 sg:total)

Quantity: Most weighted strokes gained in the heat since 2014 are Matt Kuchar, Jordan Spieth, Charley Hoffman, Brooks Koepka, and Rickie Fowler.

The quantity list is loaded with names that have racked up big finishes in majors over the last few years.

It’s not surprising to see Patton Kizzire near the bottom of the Spring column since he does most of his damage in the fall.

Baseline Performance

We now have a list of 3 golfers that are positive in all five angles.

However, we can filter out two golfers, Shawn Stefani and Chad Campbell, due to low baseline performance or form numbers. That goes to show the difference in field strength as Stefani was our specialist last week but this week he’s 80th in baseline performance so he will be reserved as a dart throw only. Campbell has local ties but his form is just too far off the tracks to trust.

The Specialist

Danny Lee

The specialist this week is Danny Lee!

Article Image

After an early-season slump, Lee finally snapped out of it at THE PLAYERS (T7). Now he heads just down the road from his home in Irving to peg it at a comfortable venue.

His track record at Colonial supports the good course fit. In 20 rounds he’s beat the field average in 15 of them. That includes a 6-under 64 in R2 of last year’s event which lapped the field average by 7.7 shots.

There is still some risk, given his season-long form but if we are to trust his top 10 at TPC Sawgrass, then Lee should be ready to shine again.

Super Simple Specialist Ratings

The goal of this article is to isolate course fit, to see who should outperform their baseline.

However, anyone with common sense knows that baseline talent (and current form) can’t be ignored when handicapping golf.

Combining Baseline Strokes Gained with Current Form and Specialist Rating, we get a Top 20 ranking that looks like this:

Webb Simpson
Jimmy Walker
Matt Kuchar
Jason Dufner
Russell Henley
Jordan Spieth
Charley Hoffman
Brooks Koepka
Xander Schauffele
Kevin Kisner
Danny Lee
Kevin Tway
Beau Hossler
Emiliano Grillo
Aaron Wise
Adam Scott
Kevin Na
Sean O’Hair
Si Woo Kim
Rickie Fowler

Spieth pops back into the top 10 after falling outside the top 20 on this list last week. Our specialist lands at #11 this week. Not bad for someone whose form was off the radar before a recent resurgence.

Best of luck everyone!

Below is a table with the full specialist data. Any fields with a 0 in them mean the sample size is not large enough. There is a minimum of 30 rounds to qualify for each angle.

The SG:TOTAL column is a baseline performance measure (since 2014). It is time-weighted so more recent results count for more than finishes from years ago.

HISTORY column is a weighted performance metric based on course history. I’ve made small adjustments for sample sizes but be sure to check on number of course rounds before blindly following this number.

FORM looks at the total strokes gained, adjusted to field strength, over the last 8 weeks (PGA TOUR and European Tour).

Josh Culp (futureoffantasy)

Josh didn’t own a set of golf clubs until after college but his love for the game now grows exponentially. He uses in-depth statistical analysis while trying to avoid the landmines that come with using traditional, outdated PGA stats. He can be found elsewhere writing for Rotoworld and Future of Fantasy. He can be found on twitter @futureoffantasy.
