Searching for a Specialist: Genesis Open

Article Image

Welcome back to another specialist search.

Like always, let’s review last week first. It was a solid week for the specialists. Despite no big names on the list, the top-five specialists got through the cut and three of them found top 25s. The last two, Castro and Herman, both fell flat.

We will stay in California this week for the Genesis Open, held at Riviera Country Club.

The angles we are going to target include: Poa Annua Greens, California Courses, Cold Weather, Hard-to-Hit Greens, and Fast Greens.

Here we go…

Poa Annua Greens

The greens this week are poa annua which means we should see plenty of short misses. This grass is known to get bumpy, leading to a lot of headaches for golfers.

You do not want to be leaving yourself six footers to save par.

We want golfers that know how to putt on these surfaces, or at least have a track record of not letting poa get the best of them.

The Top 10 Poa Annua Specialists are:

Kyle Reifers (1.67 sg:poa vs. 0.673 sg:total)
K.J. Choi (1.566 sg:poa vs. 0.624 sg:total)
Shane Lowry (2.508 sg:poa vs. 1.599 sg:total)
Derek Fathauer (1.308 sg:poa vs. 0.443 sg:total)
Martin Laird (1.679 sg:poa vs. 0.927 sg:total)
Charlie Beljan (0.052 sg:poa vs. -0.682 sg:total)
Charl Schwartzel (2.286 sg:poa vs. 1.635 sg:total)
Dustin Johnson (3.172 sg:poa vs. 2.535 sg:total)
Harris English (1.96 sg:poa vs. 1.337 sg:total)
Jamie Lovemark (1.369 sg:poa vs. 0.791 sg:total)

With Choi’s track record at this event, it’s no surprise to see he likes poa annua greens. His form on the other hand? That’s scary.

Lowry’s game is very dependent on on tee-to-green play and less so on putting. It makes sense that if others in the field are missing short and mid-range putts they’d normal make that he’d get a boost.

California Courses

When the PGA TOUR heads to Cali, we often see chilly weather and similar grass types. This angle wraps up all those Cali characteristics into one number.

The 10 California Specialists remaining:

Vaughn Taylor (1.905 sg:cali vs. 0.83 sg:total)
K.J. Choi (1.591 sg:cali vs. 0.624 sg:total)
Martin Laird (1.845 sg:cali vs. 0.927 sg:total)
Adam Hadwin (1.709 sg:cali vs. 1.02 sg:total)
J.B. Holmes (2.108 sg:cali vs. 1.423 sg:total)
Jon Curran (1.185 sg:cali vs. 0.578 sg:total)
Harris English (1.931 sg:cali vs. 1.337 sg:total)
Kyle Reifers (1.232 sg:cali vs. 0.673 sg:total)
Kelly Kraft (0.899 sg:cali vs. 0.398 sg:total)
Keegan Bradley (1.95 sg:cali vs. 1.466 sg:total)

We see plenty of overlap with poa specialists here, but grab a few new names, as well. That includes Keegan Bradley who might be the biggest Patriots fan on TOUR and is playing his first event since the big win. Narrative street, anyone?

No one has been more consistent in Cali than J.B. Holmes, though. He’s collected eight top 25s in his last 11 starts in the Golden State.

Cold Weather

Chilly golfing temperatures are often the norm when we head to Cali, and this week is no exception.

The current forecasts calls for four days of sub-70 weather and a high of 62 degrees on Monday (if needed).

Some goflers thrive in colder conditions while some just can’t take the….cold.

The Top 10 Cold Weather Specialists:

Kelly Kraft (1.375 sg:cold weather vs. 0.398 sg:total)
Patton Kizzire (1.618 sg:cold weather vs. 0.767 sg:total)
Luke Donald (1.918 sg:cold weather vs. 1.08 sg:total)
K.J. Choi (1.398 sg:cold weather vs. 0.624 sg:total)
Pat Perez (1.676 sg:cold weather vs. 0.982 sg:total)
John Merrick (0.766 sg:cold weather vs. 0.073 sg:total)
Martin Laird (1.575 sg:cold weather vs. 0.927 sg:total)
Nick Taylor (0.973 sg:cold weather vs. 0.38 sg:total)
J.B. Holmes (2.008 sg:cold weather vs. 1.423 sg:total)
Marc Leishman (1.984 sg:cold weather vs. 1.457 sg:total)

Choi and Laird make their third straight appearance in the top-10 lists.

The Englishman, Luke Donald, shows up again for this stat. We rode him to success last week based on this stat, but this week’s layout requires a bit more tee-to-green work. I don’t think Donald can chop his way around Riviera CC if he has his B or C game, but he’s posted six top 20s here in 14 tries, so the upside is there.

Hard-to-Hit Greens

Since 2010, the field has averaged just 57 percent of greens in regulation.

That is the third-lowest during that time (non-majors).

From a rational perspective that means we want elite approach play or elite scrambling (since plenty of greens will be missed).

This also brings course management into play, because golfers will have the option to taking aggressive routes and making costly mistakes if they miss offline. Or they can take a calculated safe play and know they are likely to miss the green, but they put it in a spot that gives them a good chance to get up-and-down.

Ideally, this angle will pick out those intangibles and tell us who can perform on this tough test.

The 10 Hard GIR Specialists:

Bryson DeChambeau (1.741 sg:hard GIR vs. 0.648 sg:total)
Matt Every (0.615 sg:hard GIR vs. -0.426 sg:total)
Brett Stegmaier (0.933 sg:hard GIR vs. 0.23 sg:total)
Alex Cejka (1.379 sg:hard GIR vs. 0.678 sg:total)
John Senden (1.684 sg:hard GIR vs. 1.034 sg:total)
Chez Reavie (1.598 sg:hard GIR vs. 0.963 sg:total)
Charley Hoffman (1.751 sg:hard GIR vs. 1.193 sg:total)
Daniel Summerhays (1.612 sg:hard GIR vs. 1.06 sg:total)
John Merrick (0.597 sg:hard GIR vs. 0.073 sg:total)
Andrew Loupe (0.47 sg:hard GIR vs. -0.04 sg:total)

A very odd mix of golfers here but we do have John Merrick, a past champ at this event.

Also notable is Jim Furyk on tough-to-hit greens. He’s found top 25s in 14 of his last 19 starts when the field-average GIR percentage is less than 61 percent.

Fast Greens

When I looked for correlated events this week I found courses like Augusta National, Muirfield Village, and Firestone Country Club, in addition to a few others.

That correlation makes perfect sense when you look at the stimpmeter for those events. The greens at Augusta National are often running at 13 feet while the other two typically run from 12-to-13 feet.

That is how fast Riviera CC likes to get their greens running, as well. They typically stimp between 12 and 12.6 feet.

There is some rain in the forecast which will make them more receptive, but I still expect them to be running at least 12 feet on the stimpmeter.

The 10 Fast Green Specialists:

Geoff Ogilvy (1.351 sg:fast greens vs. 0.426 sg:total)
Derek Fathauer (1.149 sg:fast greens vs. 0.443 sg:total)
Ryo Ishikawa (1.077 sg:fast greens vs. 0.426 sg:total)
John Merrick (0.666 sg:fast greens vs. 0.073 sg:total)
Hunter Mahan (1.243 sg:fast greens vs. 0.662 sg:total)
Matt Every (0.138 sg:fast greens vs. -0.426 sg:total)
Jamie Lovemark (1.336 sg:fast greens vs. 0.791 sg:total)
Greg Chalmers (0.31 sg:fast greens vs. -0.19 sg:total)
Paul Casey (2.335 sg:fast greens vs. 1.866 sg:total)
Cameron Tringale (1.376 sg:fast greens vs. 0.909 sg:total)

This lists shows a good mix of ball strikers AND putters.

The beauty of fast greens is that elite ball-strikers are often used to have a difficult time on the greens, so they aren’t affected as much. As for good putters, the best putters are able to adapt to whatever green speeds a course throws at them which explains why we see great putters like Fathauer, Every, and Chalmers on this list.

Who has the most top 25s on fast greens since 2014? That would be Hideki Matsuyama followed closely by Justin Rose and Jordan Spieth. It’s no coincidence that all three of them have a stellar track record at Augusta National.

Baseline Performance

We now have a list of seven potential specialists, but we can narrow that down by looking at baseline performance.

At the start of the season I began using strength-of-field adjusted numbers, but I did not change the criteria for baseline performance. I will start now. This week’s strong field has an average baseline SGT of 0.85 so anyone under that goes into the GPP-only section:

Hunter Mahan
K.J. Choi
Ryo Ishikawa
Ken Duke

As much as I love course history, it pains me to say I cannot trust K.J. Choi this week. Mahan is the one I like best of these GPP options.

The Specialists

J.B. Holmes
Brendan Steele
Keegan Bradley

Article Image

Our specialist this week is J.B. Holmes!

Holmes is nearly half a shot better in California, in cold weather, and on poa annua greens. He’s also better than his baseline in the other two angles we looked at this week.

As a nice reassurance gesture, he also boasts the course history to back this up. He’s 9-for-10 at Riviera Country Club, including top 25s in seven of them.

Steele and Bradley also have better-than-average course history at this week’s venue.

If you’ve been playing DFS for a while you’d probably expect to pay around $8K for all of these golfers this week. Lucky for us, DraftKings is having a clearance sale and all three of our specialists check in between $7,100 and $7,500 this week. Quite the bargain!

The Anti-Specialists

Looking for the opposite of our specialists, these golfers have negative numbers in all five angles!

Carl Pettersson
Ben Martin
Danny Lee

I don’t think you’ll have any troubles avoiding this trio. None of them are in good form and all three look like a terrible course fit.

Best of luck everyone!

Below is a table with the full specialist data. Any fields with a 0 in them mean the sample size is not large enough. There is a minimum of 25 rounds to qualify for each angle.

The SG:Total column is a baseline performance measure (since 2014),

Form looks at the performance over the last 10 weeks (PGA & Euro). Given the holiday break, form is still rounding back into shape.

Josh Culp (futureoffantasy)

Josh didn’t own a set of golf clubs until after college but his love for the game now grows exponentially. He uses in-depth statistical analysis while trying to avoid the landmines that come with using traditional, outdated PGA stats. He can be found elsewhere writing for Rotoworld and Future of Fantasy.
