Searching for a Specialist: Genesis Open

EDITOR’S NOTE: Click here to learn how you could win a trip to Augusta with the Tour Junkies and FantasyDraft!

One more week in California. That means one more week until the Florida/Bermuda specialists get unleashed.

Let’s not get ahead of ourselves, though, since we have a Tiger Week on our hands here in Los Angeles.

Reviewing our crop of specialists last week, DJ and Streelman were the two highlights, both were in contention all week at Pebble Beach. Patrick Reed and Matt Jones were the turds in the punch bowl, while Brandt Snedeker just kind of hung around and snuck his way into a T20 finish.

For the Genesis Open we will look at Performance on Poa Annua Greens, Performance on Driver-Heady Courses, Performance on Hard-to-Hit Fairways, Performance in California and finish up with Performance on Tough-to-Hit Greens.

The specialists stats are now time-weighted to pair with weighted baseline, which has taken the place of the SG:Total column. This will help with young golfers that struggled on a particular type of course to start their career but have since shown improvement.

Here we go …

Performance on Poa Annua Greens

The green surfaces are Riviera CC are very difficult. The biggest concern is the bumpiness as the day wears on.

Long-time vets will know that you must take advantage of your AM tee time on poa annua greens and then not overreact on the tough, short misses that are bound to happen.

The 10 Poa Specialists:

Sangmoon Bae (1.905 sg:poa vs. 0.699 sg:total)
Jhonattan Vegas (1.914 sg:poa vs. 1.058 sg:total)
Charlie Beljan (-0.377 sg:poa vs. -1.221 sg:total)
D.A. Points (0.704 sg:poa vs. -0.095 sg:total)
Dustin Johnson (3.771 sg:poa vs. 3 sg:total)
Martin Laird (2.052 sg:poa vs. 1.328 sg:total)
Scott Stallings (1.45 sg:poa vs. 0.74 sg:total)
Patrick Rodgers (1.421 sg:poa vs. 0.727 sg:total)
J.B. Holmes (2.228 sg:poa vs. 1.573 sg:total)
Jonas Blixt (1.134 sg:poa vs. 0.488 sg:total)

Dustin Johnson didn’t pull through on Sunday last week, but he’s still the King of Poa. His Strokes Gained Baseline is nearly four strokes over the field (PER ROUND)!

Si Woo Kim finds himself on the opposite end of things. His big finishes have come on bermudagrass greens. His 11 starts on poa annua greens have produced six MCs/WDs. Only once has he cracked the top 30.

Driver-Heavy Courses

The Riv’s scorecard doesn’t leap off the page as extremely long, but it generally plays much longer.

First, the climate in the area is generally not inducive to big drives. Then, there are six par 4s over 450 yards and two par 5s over 575 yards. If you leave your driver at home, you will be in for a bad time.

Bubba Watson is on the record saying that you can pull drivers everywhere out here at Riviera. When a big hitter like Bubba says that, you know driver will be important.

The Top 10 Driver-Heavy Specialists are:

Sung Kang (1.664 sg:driver-heavy vs. 1.094 sg:total)
Kevin Tway (1.393 sg:driver-heavy vs. 0.855 sg:total)
Ollie Schniederjans (1.855 sg:driver-heavy vs. 1.35 sg:total)
Paul Casey (2.944 sg:driver-heavy vs. 2.459 sg:total)
Tiger Woods (0.966 sg:driver-heavy vs. 0.496 sg:total)
Brian Gay (1.311 sg:driver-heavy vs. 0.846 sg:total)
Charlie Beljan (-0.787 sg:driver-heavy vs. -1.221 sg:total)
Cody Gribble (0.553 sg:driver-heavy vs. 0.119 sg:total)
Martin Laird (1.748 sg:driver-heavy vs. 1.328 sg:total)
Tom Hoge (1.078 sg:driver-heavy vs. 0.665 sg:total)

How about that? We have ourselves a Tiger Woods sighting! I never tracked these type of stats back in his prime, so I’m excited for him to stay healthy and start to establish a new “Specialist Profile.”

On the negative side, we have G-Mac. This is a good example of the weighted performance stats going to work. McDowell had a pair of top 10s on driver-heavy courses back in 2014, but the aging Northern Irishman is falling farther and farther behind on tracks. He’s finished outside the top 40 in 14 of his last 18 on driver-heavy courses, none of them landing inside the top 15. It looks like a good spot to avoid G-Mac and save him for the Florida Swing.

Hard-to-Hit Fairways

Riviera Country Club has very tight corridors to navigate.

In particular, the widths at the 300-to-325 yard ranges are inside the top 5 tightest on TOUR.

That leads to plenty of missed fairways, so don’t get down if you’re watching ShotTrack this week and notice a whole heap of missed FWs.

The Top 10 Hard Fairway Specialists:

Rory McIlroy (3.69 sg:hard fairways vs. 2.869 sg:total)
Bubba Watson (2.546 sg:hard fairways vs. 1.768 sg:total)
K.J. Choi (1.193 sg:hard fairways vs. 0.639 sg:total)
Tom Hoge (1.203 sg:hard fairways vs. 0.665 sg:total)
Branden Grace (2.273 sg:hard fairways vs. 1.738 sg:total)
Ollie Schniederjans (1.871 sg:hard fairways vs. 1.35 sg:total)
Brendan Steele (2.235 sg:hard fairways vs. 1.752 sg:total)
Adam Scott (2.752 sg:hard fairways vs. 2.286 sg:total)
Dominic Bozzelli (0.438 sg:hard fairways vs. 0 sg:total)
Chez Reavie (2.093 sg:hard fairways vs. 1.662 sg:total)

If we start at the top of this list, it quickly becomes clear that distance is a big advantage on these courses with tough-to-hit fairways.

It’s not the only thing, though, as we see golfers like Choi and Reavie on the list, as well.

California Courses

Poa annua greens are a staple of California golf, but that’s not what it’s all about.

There are golfers that like the climate, or just like golfing in the winter, which is when the West Coast Swing takes place.

The Top 10 California Specialists:

Harris English (2.159 sg:cali vs. 1.263 sg:total)
Adam Hadwin (2.208 sg:cali vs. 1.32 sg:total)
Patrick Rodgers (1.614 sg:cali vs. 0.727 sg:total)
J.B. Holmes (2.459 sg:cali vs. 1.573 sg:total)
K.J. Choi (1.439 sg:cali vs. 0.639 sg:total)
D.A. Points (0.682 sg:cali vs. -0.095 sg:total)
Jonas Blixt (1.261 sg:cali vs. 0.488 sg:total)
Scott Stallings (1.512 sg:cali vs. 0.74 sg:total)
Brendan Steele (2.438 sg:cali vs. 1.752 sg:total)
Sangmoon Bae (1.357 sg:cali vs. 0.699 sg:total)

When asked about his fondness of Riviera CC, Sangmoon Bae said this, “Everything. The greens, green speed, the rough. I like this grass, the kikuyu. Pretty much the same as Korea or Japan.”

When Adam Hadwin fired his 59 at the CareerBuilder Challenge, he cited the heavy Canadian contingent in California. He also calls Scottsdale home, so these West Coast courses are familiar to him.

It’s easy to see why Patrick Rodgers would like it here. He attended Standford, setting or tying many school records while he was there.

Hard-to-Hit Greens

We’ve already established the fairways are tough to hit here at Riveira Country Club.

It doesn’t get much easier from there since the greens are small here at The Riv and the green complexes are severe. Sometimes it’s better to miss the green (properly) rather than getting aggressive and leaving yourself on the wrong side of the hole.

There are a few different styles of golf that play well on Hard GIR courses, so let’s see who fares well.

The Top 10 Hard GIR Specialists:

Jonas Blixt (1.132 sg:hard GIR vs. 0.488 sg:total)
Charley Hoffman (2.278 sg:hard GIR vs. 1.674 sg:total)
Chad Campbell (1.564 sg:hard GIR vs. 1.04 sg:total)
Andrew Loupe (0.059 sg:hard GIR vs. -0.451 sg:total)
Matt Every (-0.011 sg:hard GIR vs. -0.521 sg:total)
D.A. Points (0.385 sg:hard GIR vs. -0.095 sg:total)
Jamie Lovemark (1.799 sg:hard GIR vs. 1.329 sg:total)
Bubba Watson (2.216 sg:hard GIR vs. 1.768 sg:total)
Whee Kim (1.059 sg:hard GIR vs. 0.613 sg:total)
Matt Kuchar (2.718 sg:hard GIR vs. 2.297 sg:total)

Golfers like Chad Campbell and Bubba Watson are the type of golfers that can pepper greens with the best of them. Most on the list are elite scramblers, though.

Near the bottom is Anirban Lahiri. For whatever reason, he doesn’t play well at all on these type of tracks. Looking at his last 15 starts on Hard GIR courses, he’s finished T41 or worse in 14 of them. The lone exception was a runner-up finish at last year’s Memorial. Let’s not count him out entirely, but I will be waiting until the Florida Swing, personally.

Baseline Performance

Like always, our last step is to weed out the huge longshots.

To do that we will eliminate anyone that falls outside the top 70 in Weighted Performance or anyone that hasn’t picked up a top 30 over the last four months. Not too strict, but definitely helps avoid the golfers that should be reserved for GPPs only:

Sangmoon Bae
Tom Hoge
K.J. Choi
Jonas Blixt

The Specialists

Jason Kokrak
Chez Reavie
Vaughn Taylor
Keegan Bradley
Jimmy Walker

The specialist this week is Jason Kokrak!

Article Image

This masher finished T34-79-MC-T41 in his first four trips to Riviera CC. It’s a course with a steep learning curve, but Kokrak has started to learn. His last two trips have yielded a runner-up finish and a T22.

Second is Chez Reavie, who arrives amidst a torrid run of form. He doesn’t fit the bomber mold, but he might be able to take the Choi route of striping fairways here at the Riv. Reavie is 2-for-7 here, but he did finish in solo 7th as recently as 2016.

Vaughn Taylor picked up a win at the Pebble Beach Pro-Am a few years ago, so he clearly likes the Golden State.

Keegan Bradley is a perfect match here, as well. He is a big hitter that doesn’t stray too far offline. He is used to missing short putts, so these poa annua greens shouldn’t change too much in his weekly mindset.

Finally, we have Jimmy Walker, who is coming off a top 10 last week. It was his first top 10 since the 2017 Tournament of Champions. Could he finally be ready to snap out of his slump that was induced by his battle with Lyme Disease?

Anti-Specialists

Francesco Molinari

Only one to potentially avoid here. The Italian is usually steady, but he is just 2-for-4 here with nothing better than a T40. If this event were played during a busy time on the European Tour schedule, I don’t think we’d even see him. A lot of the Florida courses are more up his alley as they are less forgiving off the tee.

Super Simple Specialist Ratings

The goal of this article is to isolate course fit, to see who should outperform their baseline.

However, anyone with common sense knows that baseline talent (and current form) can’t be ignored when handicapping golf.

Combining Baseline Strokes Gained with Current Form and Specialist Rating, we get a Top 20 ranking that looks like this:

Dustin Johnson
Rory Mcilroy
Chez Reavie
Brendan Steele
Phil Mickelson
Jason Kokrak
Keegan Bradley
Daniel Berger
Harris English
James Hahn
Branden Grace
Kevin Streelman
Tony Finau
Charles Howell III
Charley Hoffman
Bubba Watson
J.B. Holmes
Paul Casey
Ollie Schniederjans
Jhonattan Vegas

With the TOUR getting back in full gear after the holiday break, this list is starting to look better and better each week.

Best of luck everyone!

Below is a table with the full specialist data. Any fields with a 0 in them mean the sample size is not large enough. There is a minimum of 30 rounds to qualify for each angle.

The SG:TOTAL column is a baseline performance measure (since 2014). It is time-weighted so more recent results count for more than finishes from years ago.

HISTORY column is a weighted performance metric based on course history. I’ve made small adjustments for sample sizes but be sure to check on number of course rounds before blindly following this number.

FORM looks at the total strokes gained, adjusted to field strength, over the last 8 weeks (PGA TOUR and European Tour).

Josh Culp (futureoffantasy)

Josh didn’t own a set of golf clubs until after college but his love for the game now grows exponentially. He uses in-depth statistical analysis while trying to avoid the landmines that come with using traditional, outdated PGA stats. He can be found elsewhere writing for Rotoworld and Future of Fantasy. He can be found on twitter @futureoffantasy.
