Searching for a Specialist: Genesis Open

Staying in California for one more week, our specialist search will include poa annua performance again. Even though we leave Cali next week, that theme will continue as they head down to Mexico.

Back to this week, the goal of this article is to narrow down the course-fit angles to see what golfer or golfers might take well to the course.

Reviewing last week, our specialists went 3-for-4 with a trio of top 25s from Kevin Streelman, Michael Thompson, and Trey Mullinax. The lone blemish? It was J.B. Holmes who technically didn’t pass the form test, which goes to show that I shouldn’t bend the guidelines for reaching specialist status. That same rule will come into play again this week for another big-name talent. On the year, we’ve now picked up top 15s from 5-of-11 specialists so let’s see if we can continue with that torrid pace.

This week we look at Performance on Poa Annua, Driver-Heavy Courses, Long Courses, Strong Field Events, and Fast Greens.

Here we go…

Performance on Poa Annua

Another week of bumpy poa means another week full of short misses.

It will be interesting to look at the make percentages on this poa annua swing versus previous editions since golfers are now able to tap down spike marks. We saw that come out in full force last week at Pebble Beach where golfers were going to town on “spike marks.”

Even with the new rules there will still be golfers that are more comfortable on poa annua. Let’s see who they are.

The 10 Poa Annua Specialists:

Freddie Jacobson (1.699 sg:poa vs. 0.579 sg:total)
Scott Stallings (1.771 sg:poa vs. 0.8 sg:total)
Sangmoon Bae (1.173 sg:poa vs. 0.314 sg:total)
Bubba Watson (2.583 sg:poa vs. 1.753 sg:total)
Max Homa (0.305 sg:poa vs. -0.517 sg:total)
Carlos Ortiz (1.13 sg:poa vs. 0.394 sg:total)
Cameron Smith (1.973 sg:poa vs. 1.303 sg:total)
Patrick Rodgers (1.469 sg:poa vs. 0.831 sg:total)
Jonas Blixt (1.081 sg:poa vs. 0.498 sg:total)
Jhonattan Vegas (1.556 sg:poa vs. 1.01 sg:total)

Quantity: The golfers that have the most strokes gained on Poa Annua since 2014 are Dustin Johnson, Phil Mickelson, Tony Finau, Jordan Spieth, and Paul Casey.

There comes a time when you need to apply common sense to these numbers. Freddie Yak is a great case here. He stands out above the crowd with his improved performance on poa annua versus his baseline but we can’t forget about his current baseline. He’s spent most of the past few years with his sick child so his game is really a shell of itself. His Last 52 Form sits in the NEGATIVE so there is no reason to take a chance on him until he starts to flash a bit of form.

Driver-Heavy Courses

With six par 4s stretching over 450 yards and cold weather that often restricts yardage a bit, it’s no wonder these guys are pulling for driver so often at Riviera.

The Top 10 Driver-Heavy Specialists:

Carlos Ortiz (1.04 sg:driver-heavy vs. 0.394 sg:total)
Jason Kokrak (1.973 sg:driver-heavy vs. 1.331 sg:total)
Danny Willett (1.141 sg:driver-heavy vs. 0.507 sg:total)
Ollie Schniederjans (1.488 sg:driver-heavy vs. 0.913 sg:total)
Martin Laird (1.894 sg:driver-heavy vs. 1.333 sg:total)
Bubba Watson (2.303 sg:driver-heavy vs. 1.753 sg:total)
Sung Kang (1.33 sg:driver-heavy vs. 0.829 sg:total)
Paul Casey (2.847 sg:driver-heavy vs. 2.361 sg:total)
James Hahn (1.476 sg:driver-heavy vs. 1.007 sg:total)
K.J. Choi (0.979 sg:driver-heavy vs. 0.562 sg:total)

Quantity: Golfers with the most weighted strokes gained on Driver-Heavy courses since 2014 are Hideki Matsuyama, Dustin Johnson, Matt Kuchar, Paul Casey, and Jordan Spieth.

When you look at the Top 10 list from above it’s basically the who’s who of golfers that have crushed it at Riviera over the last 5 years. If you want to isolate just one angle, this might be the one.

Long Courses

There are some similarities between this week and the AT&T Pro-Am last week (California poa in cold and wet conditions).

The biggest difference, though, is likely the length of the courses. The AT&T Pro-Am featured three of the shortest courses on TOUR. Now they’ll head to Riviera where they’ll face a par 71 layout that plays over 7,300 yards. There are six par 4s that play over 450 yards.

The Top 10 Long Course Specialists:

Carlos Ortiz (1.141 sg:long vs. 0.394 sg:total)
Sam Burns (1.416 sg:long vs. 0.779 sg:total)
Jonas Blixt (1.09 sg:long vs. 0.498 sg:total)
Sung Kang (1.317 sg:long vs. 0.829 sg:total)
Jason Kokrak (1.777 sg:long vs. 1.331 sg:total)
Keith Mitchell (1.411 sg:long vs. 1.041 sg:total)
Vaughn Taylor (1.348 sg:long vs. 0.989 sg:total)
Andrew Landry (1.043 sg:long vs. 0.69 sg:total)
K.J. Choi (0.913 sg:long vs. 0.562 sg:total)
Sam Saunders (0.975 sg:long vs. 0.66 sg:total)

Quantity: Most weighted strokes gained on Long Courses since 2014 are Dustin Johnson, Hideki Matsuyama, Rory McIlroy, Justin Thomas, Paul Casey.

You can find yourself on this list through elite ball-striking or you can find yourself here with elite scrambling skills. The longer the course, the more likely greens will be missed. The first method is more sustainable but plenty of scramblers find themselves in contention time and again on longer layouts.

Strong Field Events

These strokes gained numbers get adjusted for the strength of competition but even still there are some golfers that can be considered “big game hunters” while others just can’t hang when they see themselves paired up with the Tiger Woods or Dustin Johnsons of the world.

The Top 10 Strong Field Specialists:

John Senden (1.244 sg:strong vs. 0.718 sg:total)
Xander Schauffele (2.304 sg:strong vs. 1.825 sg:total)
Michael Thompson (1.175 sg:strong vs. 0.756 sg:total)
Tom Hoge (1.056 sg:strong vs. 0.641 sg:total)
Peter Uihlein (1.55 sg:strong vs. 1.18 sg:total)
Chris Stroud (1.08 sg:strong vs. 0.714 sg:total)
Bryson DeChambeau (2.192 sg:strong vs. 1.86 sg:total)
Sam Saunders (0.975 sg:strong vs. 0.66 sg:total)
Harold Varner III (1.386 sg:strong vs. 1.09 sg:total)
Kyle Stanley (1.599 sg:strong vs. 1.344 sg:total)

Quantity: Most weighted strokes gained in Strong Fields since 2014 are Dustin Johnson, Rory McIlroy, Hideki Matsuyama, Justin Thomas, and Jordan Spieth.

When looking for Big Game Hunters, X-man is one that has quickly established a reputation for himself. It checks out in the data and that will likely make him a popular play when all the major championships roll around this year.

Fast Greens

The greens at Riviera get really quick. They typically run at 12 to 12.6 feet on the stimpmeter.

This puts an emphasis on approach play because you want to give yourself as many mid-range birdie looks as possible to help avoid three-putts. You also want to avoid short-siding yourself because it’s no picnic scrambling on greens when they are running that fast.

The Top 10 Fast Green Specialists:

Bronson Burgoon (1.591 sg:fast greens vs. 0.835 sg:total)
Abraham Ancer (1.783 sg:fast greens vs. 1.049 sg:total)
Sung Kang (1.517 sg:fast greens vs. 0.829 sg:total)
Kyle Stanley (2.031 sg:fast greens vs. 1.344 sg:total)
Michael Thompson (1.393 sg:fast greens vs. 0.756 sg:total)
Peter Uihlein (1.715 sg:fast greens vs. 1.18 sg:total)
Aaron Wise (2.022 sg:fast greens vs. 1.49 sg:total)
Bryson DeChambeau (2.352 sg:fast greens vs. 1.86 sg:total)
Harold Varner III (1.508 sg:fast greens vs. 1.09 sg:total)
Scott Brown (1.143 sg:fast greens vs. 0.766 sg:total)

Quantity: Most weighted strokes gained on Fast Greens since 2014 are Justin Thomas, Dustin Johnson, Rory McIlroy, Jordan Spieth, and Hideki Matsuyama.

Plenty of big hitters and high-ball hitters in particular on this list. When you can launch it skyward it makes it a bit easier to hold the green, especially when they are smaller targets like at Riv.

Baseline Performance

We’ve got a whopping 18 golfers left in our specialist search! There must be something unique about this venue that really puts golfers at ease or makes them uncomfortable. It’s rare to see specialists ran past more than 5 or 8 golfers so it’s crazy to see it stretch to nearly 20.

However, any golfers that are outside the Top 70 in Recent Form or L52 Form can be eliminated at this stage of the game. We are looking for good course fits but we don’t want to rely on a miracle.

Golfers that don’t have the form or long-term numbers to trust:

Jonas Blixt
Bubba Watson
Sam Saunders
John Senden
Grayson Murray
Vaughn Taylor
Robert Streb
James Hahn
Hunter Mahan
Bill Haas

This list contains three past champs here with Bubba, Hahn, and Haas.

The big name on the list is obviously Bubba Watson. What does he do wrong to land on the GPP-Only list instead of the specialist list below? Well, he sits at 71st in total strokes gained over the last 6 weeks (recent form). He lost 11.4 strokes putting at the Sentry TOC and then lost 3.4 strokes around-the-green at the Sony Open. He bounced back with a top 5 in Phoenix so it would be easy to say he fits the eye test here. However, I said the same thing about J.B. Holmes last week whose raw form numbers didn’t pass the Top 70 test, either. We know how that turned out. I’m not saying this makes Bubba a fade. Not even close. But I do think this form is not as airtight as some might think.

The Specialists

Martin Laird
Adam Scott
Paul Casey
Charley Hoffman
Tony Finau
Louis Oosthuizen
Justin Thomas
Adam Hadwin

The man in the high castle this week is Martin Laird, who checks all the boxes at Riviera. The biggest split in his favor and possibly the most important is his increased performance on driver-heavy courses (+0.56 strokes per round). The Scot has backed up the course fit with a trio of Top 11 finishes here in his last three visits. High upside for someone in his price range.

After Laird, it won’t take much convincing to play any of these golfers.

Adam Scott calls this his favorite course on TOUR and it’s easy to see why after seeing this course fit.

Paul Casey is arriving fresh off a near-win. Will he be exhausted or use that close call as momentum?

Charley Hoffman’s form looked putrid until a top 20 at Phoenix. We’ve seen before with him that all it takes is one good week to get things kickstarted. Just look at his form before the OHL Classic victory. He lost strokes to the field in four of the field lead-in starts but gained 4.9 strokes tee-to-green at the Sanderson Farms the week before winning. This sort of reminds me of that kind of form.

There is nothing really to say about Finau, JT, Oosthy, or Hadwin. They are all great plays, but Oosthuizen is the only one missing a top 10 from his Riviera resume. He’s making his first appearance here since 2014.

The Anti-Specialists

We’ve established the great course fits, but who doesn’t fit the layout as well?

J.J. Spaun
Rod Pampling
Kelly Kraft
Morgan Hoffmann
Whee Kim
Ryan Armour
Anirban Lahiri
Rafa Cabrera Bello
Nick Taylor
Pat Perez

RCB is the big name on the list here. He finished T26 in his debut and found himself in the mix last week so I wouldn’t yell at you if you drafted him this week. However, the switch from extremely short courses to a long one doesn’t appear to be in his favor. Neither does the expected increase in green speeds. His career top-25 rate when the stimp exceeds 12 feet is 27% while his top-25 rate in all other events is 44%.

Super Simple Specialist Ratings

The goal of this article is to isolate course fit, to see who should outperform their baseline.

However, anyone with common sense knows that baseline talent (and current form) can’t be ignored when handicapping golf.

Combining Long-Term Skill (L52) with Current Form and Specialist Rating, we get a Top 20 ranking that looks like this:

Dustin Johnson
Bryson DeChambeau
Justin Thomas
Xander Schauffele
Jon Rahm
Tony Finau
Paul Casey
Adam Hadwin
Cameron Smith
Hideki Matsuyama
Matt Kuchar
Rory Mcilroy
Adam Scott
Phil Mickelson
Louis Oosthuizen
Marc Leishman
Jason Kokrak
Charles Howell III
Tommy Fleetwood
Michael Thompson

Michael Thompson is probably the biggest surpise on the list above but he’s not even available in the DK player pool.

For me it’s all about DJ and JT at the top but Bryson sneaks his way into that podium spot thanks to a lot of good recent Euro Tour play.

Best of luck everyone!

Below is a table with the full specialist data. Any fields with a 0 in them mean the sample size is not large enough. There is a minimum of 30 rounds to qualify for each angle.

The SG:TOTAL column is a baseline performance measure (since 2014). It is time-weighted so more recent results count for more than finishes from years ago.

HISTORY column is a weighted performance metric based on course history. I’ve made tiny adjustments for sample sizes, but be sure to check on number of course rounds before blindly following this number.

FORM looks at the total strokes gained, adjusted to field strength, over the last 6 weeks (PGA TOUR and European Tour).

SIMPLE RATING looks at Long-Term Skill (L52), FORM, and SPECIALIST RATING to create a simple rating that includes course fit but doesn’t overweight it.

L52 FORM looks at performance over the last 52 weeks across the PGA TOUR, Web.com Tour, and European Tour.

Josh Culp (futureoffantasy)

Josh didn’t own a set of golf clubs until after college but his love for the game now grows exponentially. He uses in-depth statistical analysis while trying to avoid the landmines that come with using traditional, outdated PGA stats. He can be found elsewhere writing for Rotoworld and Future of Fantasy. He can be found on twitter @futureoffantasy.
