Searching for a Specialist: Greenbrier Classic

Staying pretty close to the nation’s capital, we head 250 miles west of TPC Potomac for this week’s event at The Greenbrier Resort.

Recapping last week, our specialist was Kevin Tway who didn’t crush lineups but he also didn’t shine. A ho-hum week but I did start including the Simple Specialist Rating in the table last week, so take a peek at that if you didn’t see it last week. It’s a good way to include course fit without relying entirely on fit.

For the Greenbrier, we will look at performance on Bentgrass Greens, performance in the Summer, performance on Par 70 Courses, and wrap things up with performance in the Rain.

Here we go …

Bentgrass Greens

Sticking around in the cool-season region, the TOUR heads to another bentgrass course.

The Greenbrier had to re-lay all their turf after the 2016 floods but they are still bentgrass.

The 10 Bentgrass Specialists:

Smylie Kaufman (0.72 sg:bentgrass vs. -0.342 sg:total)
Tim Herron (0.372 sg:bentgrass vs. -0.394 sg:total)
Steve Marino (0.848 sg:bentgrass vs. 0.153 sg:total)
Robert Garrigus (1.328 sg:bentgrass vs. 0.715 sg:total)
Jonathan Randolph (0.404 sg:bentgrass vs. -0.171 sg:total)
Abraham Ancer (1.221 sg:bentgrass vs. 0.664 sg:total)
Geoff Ogilvy (0.819 sg:bentgrass vs. 0.352 sg:total)
Steven Bowditch (-0.8 sg:bentgrass vs. -1.256 sg:total)
Chad Campbell (1.302 sg:bentgrass vs. 0.877 sg:total)
Billy Hurley III (0.961 sg:bentgrass vs. 0.538 sg:total)

Quantity: The golfers that have the most strokes gained on bentgrass since 2014 are Tony Finau, Bill Haas, Phil Mickelson, Russell Henley, and Brian Harman.

It’s kind of funny that guys like Henley, Harman, and Kisner often get tied to bermudagrass but some of their best results come on bentgrass. In fact, the list of top bentgrass performers is heavily populated by University of Georgia grads (Henley #4, Harman #5, Bubba #7, Kisner #9, English #19, Swafford #22). If you’re into correlated teams, the ALL-GEORGIA team could be an interesting one this week.

At the bottom, we have J.J. Spaun, who flashed for a round last week at TPC Potomac (bentgrass) but faded to mediocrity by week’s end. Overall, he ranks just 85th in this week’s field when it comes to the percentage of go-low rounds on bentgrass, since 2014.

Summer Lovin’

Whether it’s dealing with heat, pacing themselves with smart scheduling, or a fondness for bentgrass, some golfers really elevate their game in the summer months.

The Top 10 Summer Specialists are:

Steven Bowditch (-0.111 sg:summer vs. -1.256 sg:total)
Steve Marino (1.155 sg:summer vs. 0.153 sg:total)
Xander Schauffele (2.315 sg:summer vs. 1.49 sg:total)
Jim Furyk (2.307 sg:summer vs. 1.552 sg:total)
Smylie Kaufman (0.385 sg:summer vs. -0.342 sg:total)
Geoff Ogilvy (0.987 sg:summer vs. 0.352 sg:total)
Mackenzie Hughes (1.286 sg:summer vs. 0.693 sg:total)
Johnson Wagner (1.29 sg:summer vs. 0.7 sg:total)
Ricky Barnes (1.066 sg:summer vs. 0.55 sg:total)
Robert Streb (1.315 sg:summer vs. 0.814 sg:total)

Quantity: Golfers with the most weighted strokes gained in the summer since 2014 are Bubba Watson, Keegan Bradley, Webb Simpson, Tony Finau, and Kevin Na.

kevin-chappell-550x330

A few golfers that I’ve noticed mention this in the past are Xander Schauffele and Kevin Chappell. Schauffele said his stats guys told him that the winter months aren’t typically good for him while Chappell has said that any results before the Masters are just icing on the cake because he usually picks up steam once spring starts.

Par 70 Courses

Another week and another par 70. These seem to be the new norm lately.

With just two par 5s to score on, golfers need to keep afloat with steady scoring on par 3s and par 4s this week.

The Top 10 Par 70 Specialists:

Tim Herron (0.424 sg:par70 vs. -0.394 sg:total)
Steven Bowditch (-0.568 sg:par70 vs. -1.256 sg:total)
Joel Dahmen (1.342 sg:par70 vs. 0.702 sg:total)
Xander Schauffele (2.117 sg:par70 vs. 1.49 sg:total)
Ryan Armour (1.453 sg:par70 vs. 0.92 sg:total)
Brett Stegmaier (0.709 sg:par70 vs. 0.189 sg:total)
David Lingmerth (1.531 sg:par70 vs. 1.018 sg:total)
Danny Lee (1.452 sg:par70 vs. 0.967 sg:total)
Kelly Kraft (0.839 sg:par70 vs. 0.383 sg:total)
Webb Simpson (2.317 sg:par70 vs. 1.894 sg:total)

Quantity: Most weighted strokes gained on par 70s since 2014 are Webb Simpson, Kevin Kisner, Tony Finau, Russell Henley, and Brian Harman.

Finau looks a bit out of place on that list above because the rest of those top 5 would be bucketed into the plodders category.

Near the bottom of the Par 70 column we have guys like Phil Mickelson and Smylie Kaufman who often lean on length and can tear apart the par 5s when they’re firing on all cylinders. A par 70 is going to negate that par-5 scoring ability just a bit.

Rain, Rain, Go Away

Given the time of year in which this event is played, rain (and thunderstorms) are often in the equation.

That looks to be the case again this week with precipitation percents falling between 20% and 90% for the entirety of the event.

The Top 10 Rain Specialists:

Patton Kizzire (2.155 sg:rain vs. 0.805 sg:total)
Steven Bowditch (-0.165 sg:rain vs. -1.256 sg:total)
Jimmy Walker (2.516 sg:rain vs. 1.559 sg:total)
Scott Brown (1.688 sg:rain vs. 0.772 sg:total)
Chad Campbell (1.691 sg:rain vs. 0.877 sg:total)
James Hahn (1.787 sg:rain vs. 1.074 sg:total)
Jon Curran (1.039 sg:rain vs. 0.348 sg:total)
Martin Flores (1.274 sg:rain vs. 0.633 sg:total)
Nick Taylor (1.295 sg:rain vs. 0.665 sg:total)
Hudson Swafford (1.537 sg:rain vs. 0.926 sg:total)

Quantity: Most weighted strokes gained in rainy conditions since 2014 are Jimmy Walker, Phil Mickelson, Keegan Bradley, Kevin Kisner, and Bill Haas.

Someone like Jimmy Walker might benefit from softer conditions as it’ll mean more of his drives will hit the fairway and stop instead of rolling through into the rough.

Baseline Performance

We now have a list of eight golfers that are positive in all of the angles above.

Golfers that are a good course fit but also bring some question marks in the form or baseline performance areas include:

Tyrone Van Aswegen
Chad Campbell
Shawn Stefani
Geoff Ogilvy
Robert Streb
Steven Bowditch

Van Aswegen is always a wildcard but if the fit checks out then maybe he’s worth a look for first-round leader bets or showdown slates. I wouldn’t trust him for all four rounds, though.

Stefani is 4-for-4 here so he might be worth a shot in GPPs.

Streb and Bowditch have a combined three runner-up finishes here. It’s really hard to trust them with their long-term performance numbers, though.

The Specialist

Robert Garrigus
Danny Lee

The specialist this week is Robert Garrigus!

robert-garrigus-550x330

This big hitter missed the cut in his 2010 Greenbrier debut but he’s 2-for-2 since they added a bit more length to the layout.

Garrigus ranks 49th in this week’s field when it comes to the percentage of rounds beating the field average by 2 or more strokes in a round since 2014. That number rises to 31st in the field if we only look at bentgrass courses.

He’s pretty boom-or-bust lately with form that reads T27-MC-T18-WD-T21. Given the course fit and bentgrass numbers, specifically, I’d look for another top 30 this week.

The second specialist this week is Danny Lee who calls this his favorite event on TOUR. Who wouldn’t say that about the site of their lone PGA TOUR win, though?

Since a MC in his 2012 Greenbrier debut, he has gone T16-WIN-T9 here in West Virginia. Lee is always a boom-or-bust candidate but his course fit sways his likely outcomes toward BOOM this week.

Anti-Specialists

We’ve identified the golfers that grade out positive in all of the course-fit angles, but who does the opposite?

Jonas Blixt
Kevin Streelman
John Huh
Michael Thompson
Phil Mickelson
Jamie Lovemark
Matt Jones
Matt Every

We’ve seen Blixt win here but he’s also gone T35-MC-MC in his three other trips. I’d expect more of that this week.

Streelman, Phil, and Lovemark would be the “big names” here.

Mickelson has such a large baseline number that he’s still in play despite the poor course fit and poor course history.

Lovemark falls on the wrong side of this course-fit spectrum but he proved he can contend here with a T3 last year. If he were going to be popular this week, he might fall under the “fade” category but since he should have low ownership, I will jump back on the train.

Super Simple Specialist Ratings

The goal of this article is to isolate course fit, to see who should outperform their baseline.

However, anyone with common sense knows that baseline talent (and current form) can’t be ignored when handicapping golf.

Combining Baseline Strokes Gained with Current Form and Specialist Rating, we get a Top 20 ranking that looks like this:

Bubba Watson
Jimmy Walker
Xander Schauffele
Joaquin Niemann
Russell Henley
J.B. Holmes
Kevin Na
Keegan Bradley
Anirban Lahiri
Bill Haas
Ryan Armour
Charles Howell III
Tony Finau
C.T. Pan
Webb Simpson
Chase Seiffert
Danny Lee
Brandt Snedeker
Ryan Moore
Brian Harman

Seiffert is the small-sample outlier here. I want to make him back up that top 10 at the Travelers before I give him consideration.

Our specialist this week is Robert Garrigus and he checks in at 35th on this list while Danny Lee is #17.

Best of luck everyone!

Below is a table with the full specialist data. Any fields with a 0 in them mean the sample size is not large enough. There is a minimum of 30 rounds to qualify for each angle.

The SG:TOTAL column is a baseline performance measure (since 2014). It is time-weighted so more recent results count for more than finishes from years ago.

HISTORY column is a weighted performance metric based on course history. I’ve made small adjustments for sample sizes but be sure to check on number of course rounds before blindly following this number.

FORM looks at the total strokes gained, adjusted to field strength, over the last 8 weeks (PGA TOUR and European Tour).

SIMPLE RATING looks at SGTotal, FORM, and SPECIALIST RATING to create a simple rating that includes course fit but doesn’t overweight it.

Josh Culp (futureoffantasy)

Josh didn’t own a set of golf clubs until after college but his love for the game now grows exponentially. He uses in-depth statistical analysis while trying to avoid the landmines that come with using traditional, outdated PGA stats. He can be found elsewhere writing for Rotoworld and Future of Fantasy. He can be found on twitter @futureoffantasy.
