Searching for a Specialist: Houston Open

Back in the States for this week’s Houston Open, golfers will turn their attention to the Golf Club of Houston before next week’s big event. With no sponsor attached this year, the Houston Open is in jeopardy of getting scratched from next year’s schedule if they don’t figure it out.

Last week our specialists went 2-for-2 in getting through the cut but didn’t make a huge push from there. Looking at the Super Simple Ratings from last week, Brice Garnett showed up as No. 8 on that list. Definitely a list that we should be cross-checking for surprise names.

For the Houston Open we will look at Performance on Overseeded Greens, Performance on Driver-Heavy Courses, Performance on Par 72 Courses, and Performance on Easy-to-Hit Greens.

Here we go …

Performance on Overseeded Greens

This week’s course will try their best to mimic the conditions at Augusta National. For them, that means they heavily overseed the greens with a bentgrass/poa trivialis combination to make them play more like bentgrass. However, now that we’re in spring that bermuda won’t be dormant for much longer. Let’s see who has fared well on other overseeded greens…

The 10 Overseeded Green Specialists:

John Huh (1.537 sg:overseeded vs. 0.858 sg:total)
Daniel Berger (2.473 sg:overseeded vs. 1.797 sg:total)
Russell Henley (2.075 sg:overseeded vs. 1.443 sg:total)
Sean O’Hair (1.628 sg:overseeded vs. 1.032 sg:total)
Matt Jones (1.396 sg:overseeded vs. 0.842 sg:total)
Charles Howell III (1.97 sg:overseeded vs. 1.508 sg:total)
Ryan Palmer (1.907 sg:overseeded vs. 1.447 sg:total)
Chris Kirk (1.676 sg:overseeded vs. 1.22 sg:total)
Jason Dufner (1.987 sg:overseeded vs. 1.54 sg:total)
Michael Thompson (0.818 sg:overseeded vs. 0.447 sg:total)

Almost everyone on the list has a connection to Florida or Texas. Those are the two states (along with Arizona) where golfers would be most likely to see overseeded conditions.

Near the bottom we see eight golfers that have an overseeded performance that drops more than half a shot per round on overseed: Tony Finau, Andrew Loupe, Jordan Spieth, Scott Brown, Smylie Kaufman, Retief Goosen, Derek Fathauer, and Ian Poulter.

It’s always important to keep a golfer’s baseline in mind before you eliminate them, but the golfers on that list are fighting an uphill battle this week on the greens.

Driver-Heavy Courses

The Golf Club of Houston has four par 5s and also has four par 4s over 460 yards.

Being able to pull driver with confidence is a huge advantage here. Especially with rain-soaked conditions, which they may see early in the week. Being able to pull driver and not rely on fairway roll could be a big deal in the first few rounds.

The Top 10 Driver-Heavy Specialists are:

Andrew Putnam (0.885 sg:driver-heavy vs. 0.171 sg:total)
Sung Kang (1.693 sg:driver-heavy vs. 1.003 sg:total)
Kevin Tway (1.301 sg:driver-heavy vs. 0.8 sg:total)
Tom Hoge (1.033 sg:driver-heavy vs. 0.61 sg:total)
Cody Gribble (0.484 sg:driver-heavy vs. 0.065 sg:total)
Jon Curran (0.795 sg:driver-heavy vs. 0.417 sg:total)
Smylie Kaufman (0.453 sg:driver-heavy vs. 0.086 sg:total)
Harris English (1.587 sg:driver-heavy vs. 1.226 sg:total)
Aaron Baddeley (1.236 sg:driver-heavy vs. 0.914 sg:total)
Michael Kim (1.019 sg:driver-heavy vs. 0.703 sg:total)

Sung Kang is someone we know loves to smash it with the big stick. Just go follow him on Instagram if you need proof. He played well here last year and may show his face near the top of the board again this week.

Who would prefer to keep driver in their bag? Perhaps Jonathan Byrd, Henrik Stenson, Alex Cejka, Brett Stegmaier, and Rafa Cabrera Bello since they are the bottom five here (versus baseline).

Par 72 Courses

With four par 5s on the scorecard, that means plenty of distance to deal with on this course.

To score well on these longer holes, you generally need to have some length off the tee, or be elite with a wedge in hand.

Let’s see who likes to play par 72 tracks…

The Top 10 Par 72 Specialists:

Cody Gribble (0.796 sg:par72 vs. 0.065 sg:total)
Andrew Loupe (0.06 sg:par72 vs. -0.605 sg:total)
Andrew Putnam (0.767 sg:par72 vs. 0.171 sg:total)
Martin Piller (0.647 sg:par72 vs. 0.143 sg:total)
Smylie Kaufman (0.566 sg:par72 vs. 0.086 sg:total)
Michael Kim (1.136 sg:par72 vs. 0.703 sg:total)
Seamus Power (1.4 sg:par72 vs. 0.971 sg:total)
Peter Uihlein (1.557 sg:par72 vs. 1.212 sg:total)
Bronson Burgoon (0.766 sg:par72 vs. 0.449 sg:total)
Ryan Palmer (1.758 sg:par72 vs. 1.447 sg:total)

Plenty of firepower on this list.

Another way to look at these stats is to see who has the most rounds where they crushed the field by four or more strokes (par 72s only). Looking at a time-weighted view of that since 2014, the leaders are Justin Rose, J.B. Holmes, Tony Finau, Jordan Spieth, Russell Henley, Emiliano Grillo, Jhonattan Vegas, and Rickie Fowler.

If you’re looking for someone that might be able to wax the field, that’s a good list to start with.

Easy-to-Hit Greens

The Golf Club of Houston keeps the rough down to prep golfers for Augusta National.

However, the result of that setup is easier approach shots and the greens here don’t have the same difficulty of holding as you’ll see next week.

That means golfers will average about 13 greens per round, which puts less emphasis on the short game.

The Top 10 Easy GIR Specialists:

Nicholas Lindheim (0.41 sg:easy GIR vs. -0.241 sg:total)
Johnson Wagner (1.153 sg:easy GIR vs. 0.546 sg:total)
Rafa Cabrera Bello (2.346 sg:easy GIR vs. 1.897 sg:total)
Mac Hughes (1.12 sg:easy GIR vs. 0.677 sg:total)
Robert Garrigus (1.141 sg:easy GIR vs. 0.701 sg:total)
Cody Gribble (0.479 sg:easy GIR vs. 0.065 sg:total)
Jonathan Byrd (0.878 sg:easy GIR vs. 0.505 sg:total)
Geoff Ogilvy (0.853 sg:easy GIR vs. 0.481 sg:total)
Russell Henley (1.812 sg:easy GIR vs. 1.443 sg:total)
Shawn Stefani (1.066 sg:easy GIR vs. 0.704 sg:total)

If we look at a long-term view of adjusted scrambling, 7 of the 10 names above are in the bottom half of this week’s field. That made sense to how the course sets up and the numbers back it up. I am not looking into short game performance very much if at all, this week.

Baseline Performance

We’ve now narrowed out specialist search down to 9 golfers, but some of them we can eliminate from our player pool due to baseline performance.

Golfers that grade out as a good course fit but fall outside the top 70 in long-term Strokes Gained Total or Form include: Jhonattan Vegas, Matt Jones, Michael Kim, Brice Garnett, and Michael Thompson.

Vegas is the most appealing of that bunch. Most on that list should be reserved for GPPs only, though.

The Specialists

Russell Henley
Charles Howell III
Chris Kirk
James Hahn

The specialist this week is Russell Henley!

russell-henley-550x330

Nothing shocking here when you consider his stellar track record at the Golf Club of Houston. Sometimes we see course horses grade out as average or even poor course fits, but that’s not the case here with Russ.

Entering the week as the defending champion and four straight top 7s at this course, there may be a sense of overconfidence this week if he enters with the wrong frame of mind. There is some slight concern in the mental department this week but no concerns with the course fit area.

The other three golfers should also be sprinkled with confidence this week. Kirk doesn’t have the distance but still plays these par 72 layouts very well.

Hahn arrives in stellar form and CH3 is always a steady option.

Super Simple Specialist Ratings

The goal of this article is to isolate course fit, to see who should outperform their baseline.

However, anyone with common sense knows that baseline talent (and current form) can’t be ignored when handicapping golf.

Combining Baseline Strokes Gained with Current Form and Specialist Rating, we get a Top 20 ranking that looks like this:

Luke List
Daniel Berger
Chris Kirk
Rafa Cabrera Bello
Charles Howell III
Brandt Snedeker
Byeong Hun An
Rickie Fowler
Shubhankar Sharma
John Huh
Russell Henley
James Hahn
Aaron Baddeley
Sean O’Hair
Brandon Harkins
Keegan Bradley
Justin Rose
William McGirt
J.B. Holmes
Phil Mickelson

Last week Brice Garnett snuck into the top 10. Will we have any golfers fly under the radar this week? John Huh ranks 10th on the list above. He would certainly be a big surprise if he flirted with contention this week.

Best of luck everyone!

Below is a table with the full specialist data. Any fields with a 0 in them mean the sample size is not large enough. There is a minimum of 30 rounds to qualify for each angle.

The SG:TOTAL column is a baseline performance measure (since 2014). It is time-weighted so more recent results count for more than finishes from years ago.

HISTORY column is a weighted performance metric based on course history. I’ve made small adjustments for sample sizes, but be sure to check on number of course rounds before blindly following this number.

FORM looks at the total strokes gained, adjusted to field strength, over the last 8 weeks (PGA TOUR and European Tour).

Josh Culp (futureoffantasy)

Josh didn’t own a set of golf clubs until after college but his love for the game now grows exponentially. He uses in-depth statistical analysis while trying to avoid the landmines that come with using traditional, outdated PGA stats. He can be found elsewhere writing for Rotoworld and Future of Fantasy. He can be found on twitter @futureoffantasy.
