Searching for a Specialist: Italian Open
![]()
Welcome back to another specialist search. This time we head across the pond for some Euro action.
The event is the Italian Open and since the course has been used just once in recent years, it will be nice to get a deeper view into some angles on the course, instead of relying on one year of course history.
To do this we will look at performance on the European Continent, Bentgrass Greens, and finish up with Par 71 performance.
Here we go…
European Continent
Unlike the name suggests, the European Tour only hosts about half of its sanctioned events on the European continent.
By looking solely at European results, we can narrow in on golfers that prefer the climates/regions/languages, and can also handle the strength of field, which is often higher in the European events when compared so the South African and some of the Asian events.
The Top 10 European Continent Specialists are:
Soren Kjeldsen (1.99 sg:European Continent vs. 1.187 sg:total)
Simon Khan (0.14 sg:European Continent vs. -0.329 sg:total)
Matthew Fitzpatrick (1.653 sg:European Continent vs. 1.098 sg:total)
Lee Westwood (1.548 sg:European Continent vs. 1.01 sg:total)
Fabrizio Zanotti (0.987 sg:European Continent vs. 0.566 sg:total)
Rikard Karlberg (1.392 sg:European Continent vs. 0.893 sg:total)
Martin Kaymer (1.888 sg:European Continent vs. 1.426 sg:total)
Robert Karlsson (0.02 sg:European Continent vs. -0.161 sg:total)
Mikko Korhonen (1.088 sg:European Continent vs. 0.845 sg:total)
Eddie Pepperell (0.289 sg:European Continent vs. 0.153 sg:total)
Right away we’ve narrowed it down to quite a nice list.
The Dane (Kjeldsen) is the most interesting as he’s found top 25s in 14 of his last 19 starts on European soil. The top strike-rate in the field.
James Morrison just missed out on the top-10 list above but he sees a nice improvement in performance when playing in Europe, as well. His stroke-play form is a bit concerning lately, although he did show some signs of life at the Omega European Masters (T18).
On the opposite side of the swingset, we have guys like George Coetzee, Haydn Porteous, Trevor Fisher Jr, and Justin Walters. If you follow the Euro Tour at all, you probably know these are all South Africans who pad their stats in the many events played in their home country (always low strength of field events).

Bentgrass Greens
The greens at Golf Club Monaco feature a bentgrass/poa mix so we’ll have a look at bentgrass performance to see who ups their game on bent.
A large majority of the Euro Tour events are played on bentgrass, so poor performances on bermuda or paspalum often stick out like a sore thumb.
The Top 10 Bentgrass Specialists remaining:
Soren Kjeldsen (1.742 sg:bentgrass vs. 1.187 sg:total)
Simon Khan (0.163 sg:bentgrass vs. -0.329 sg:total)
Matthew Fitzpatrick (1.508 sg:bentgrass vs. 1.098 sg:total)
Lee Westwood (1.416 sg:bentgrass vs. 1.01 sg:total)
Fabrizio Zanotti (0.904 sg:bentgrass vs. 0.566 sg:total)
Rikard Karlberg (1.223 sg:bentgrass vs. 0.893 sg:total)
Martin Kaymer (1.752 sg:bentgrass vs. 1.426 sg:total)
Robert Karlsson (0.16 sg:bentgrass vs. -0.161 sg:total)
Mikko Korhonen (1.125 sg:bentgrass vs. 0.845 sg:total)
Eddie Pepperell (0.425 sg:bentgrass vs. 0.153 sg:total)
We see a lot of familiar names when comparing the first two lists. That’s because Euro Tour events on the continent of Europe often feature bentgrass putting surfaces. Of course there are some exceptions, so this angle picks up on those.
Fabrizio Zanotti is one that see a big uptick in upside when heading to bentgrass. The Olympian is still not the most consistent golfer but he’s grabbed top 25s in 46% of his last 26 starts on bentgrass.
Another Olympian, Julien Quesne, has found top 25s in 15 of his last 29 starts on bentgrass. This is definitely the style of grass you want to target him on.

Par 71 Courses
This last angle is one that I’ve scoffed at in the past for PGA TOUR events. It’s sort of a last resort angle on the PGA TOUR. I do think it has a bit more use on the Euro Tour and here’s why…
A LARGE majority of Euro Tour events are played on par 72 tracks. That means any par 70 or par 71 is an unwelcome change for all the golfers that like to take advantage of the par 5s. With just three on the scorecard this week, golfers will have to survive the par 3s and par 4 better than most weeks on the Euro Tour.
Secondly, this course played to a 72 last year, so looking at that one year may be even more misleading than your typical one-year sample size at a course.
The Top 10 Par 71 Specialists remaining are:
Oliver Wilson (-0.213 sg:par71 vs. -1.436 sg:total)
James Morrison (1.785 sg:par71 vs. 0.738 sg:total)
Tommy Fleetwood (1.509 sg:par71 vs. 0.691 sg:total)
Rafa Cabrera Bello (2.034 sg:par71 vs. 1.232 sg:total)
David Lipsky (1.246 sg:par71 vs. 0.487 sg:total)
Martin Kaymer (2.127 sg:par71 vs. 1.426 sg:total)
Soren Kjeldsen (1.873 sg:par71 vs. 1.187 sg:total)
Romain Wattel (1.021 sg:par71 vs. 0.71 sg:total)
Robert Dinwiddie (0.444 sg:par71 vs. 0.208 sg:total)
Daniel Brooks (-0.008 sg:par71 vs. -0.24 sg:total)
Morrison, Kaymer, and Kjeldsen completed the trifecta by appearing in all three top-10 lists.
Neither of them rely on par 5s to make their bank. They can grind out par 4s with the best of them.
Oliver Wilson may show up on top, but as you can see his baseline is far from anything you want to rely on.

Baseline Performance
If we look at our recent-form filter, we see that a few golfers remaining have been losing strokes to the field over the past 10 week of stroke-play events. So we can exclude them:
James Morrison
Oliver Wilson
Edouard Espana
Morrison went through quite the cold stretch mid-season, but a top 20 at the Omega European Masters may be the first step in the right direction. GPP only, still.
Looking more long-term, there is one golfer that loses strokes to the field (since 2015) so we will also kick out Daniel Brooks and classify him as GPP only.

Our specialist this week is Soren Kjeldsen.
The Dane missed the cut last year at this venue, but he missed it on the number. With the course being a good fit, and arriving in much better form (consistency-wise) this time around, Kjeldsen makes for a great anchor in all formats.
This list is a bit longer than most weeks on the PGA TOUR, but the Golf Club Milano did not leave us with a lot of angles to look at since it’s sort of the prototypical setup in terms of length, difficulty, field strength, etc.
A lot of these guys are no-brainers, but I could certainly see golfers like Eduardo De La Riva or Joakim Lagergren being the wildcards that payoff in GPPs.
The Anti-Specialists
The golfers below are negative in all angles this week. Basically the exact opposite of our specialists and we should try to avoid them this week or limit our exposure at the very least.
This week the anti-specialists are:
Nathan Holman
Andrew Dodt
Marc Warren
Matt Ford
Prom Meesawat
Scott Hend
Darren Fichardt
Johan Carlsson
Seve Benson
Jason Scrivener
Alejandro Canizares
Renato Paratore
Robert Rock
Lucas Bjerregaard
Oliver Fisher
Richard Green
Scott Hend is the easiest fade here, in my opinion. He arrives in great form so he’ll be popular but all the numbers point to a poor showing this week.
I could see Canizares, Rock, and/or Bjerregaard getting some love this week, as well. I’m not saying you have to fade all these guys but if they are borderline plays for you then fade. If they were rock-solid before reading this, maybe just knock off a share or two.
Best of luck everyone!
Below is a table with the full specialist data. Any fields with a 0 in them mean the sample size is not large enough. There is a minimum of 25 rounds to qualify for each angle.
The SG:Total column is a baseline performance measure (since 2015),
Form is the strokes gained per round over the last 10 weeks and all the other columns will show you their performance for that angle (per round) in comparison to the baseline strokes gained with positive numbers being a good thing.
