Searching for a Specialist: John Deere Classic

rotogrinders_user_22704

Welcome to another week of specialist searching.

Looking at past results, we are going to find out who fits the course at TPC Deere Run.

Before we dive too deep, let’s recap our picks from last week. The top specialist, Michael Putnam, missed the cut but the other four successfully played all four rounds. Chad Campbell was the standout as he earned a T9, but David Hearn was right behind him in a tie for 14th place. If you read the write-up you probably realized that Putnam was still a low-upside play despite the great course fit, given his long-term baseline.

Overall, a solid week for the specialists, so let’s build on that momentum as the TOUR takes on an event that will be played in pretty similar conditions.

Just like last week, we will look at Performance on Bentgrass Greens, Performance on Easy-to-Hit Fairways, and Performance in the Summer. On top of that, we will add Performance on TPC Courses, and Performance on Easy-to-Hit Greens.

Here we go …

Bentgrass Greens

Another week, another bentgrass course. Welcome to summer.

Jerry Kelly had this to say about the greens here at TPC Deere Run, “We just understand the bounces it’s going to take. We’d like to say this is about the purest grass you can play on, pure bent, a little poa annua mixed in. The Bermuda you’ve got to pay attention to the grain so much, and we usually overplay or underplay. Here just what you see is what you get. It’s a pretty comfortable feeling.”

The Top 10 Bentgrass Specialists are:

Tim Herron (0.226 sg:bentgrass vs. -0.659 sg:total)
Jonathan Randolph (0.827 sg:bentgrass vs. 0.052 sg:total)
Troy Matteson (-0.672 sg:bentgrass vs. -1.295 sg:total)
Chad Campbell (1.46 sg:bentgrass vs. 0.995 sg:total)
Gonzalo Fernandez-Castano (0.681 sg:bentgrass vs. 0.238 sg:total)
Chris Stroud (1.12 sg:bentgrass vs. 0.711 sg:total)
Robert Garrigus (0.859 sg:bentgrass vs. 0.456 sg:total)
Johnson Wagner (0.9 sg:bentgrass vs. 0.499 sg:total)
Geoff Ogilvy (0.854 sg:bentgrass vs. 0.466 sg:total)
Miguel Angel Carballo (-0.219 sg:bentgrass vs. -0.591 sg:total)

Let’s not get too excited about guys like Tim Herron or Troy Matteson since their baseline strokes gained are so low. However, Chad Campbell certainly stands out with a great baseline, great form, and great bentgrass splits.

You are probably tired of me driving home this point, but Lucas Glover remains an auto-fade for me whenever he takes on bentgrass. He’s posted six top 30s this season, with only one coming on bentgrass (Shriners).

Performance on Easy-to-Hit Fairways

Just like last week, we have another course where the fairways are generous.

That means a lot of approach shots from the fairways which can help golfers with a low ball flight, golfers that struggle out of the rought, etc. So let’s so who shines on easy fairways…

The 10 Easy Fairway Specialists:

Kelly Kraft (1.411 sg:easy fairways vs. 0.351 sg:total)
Tyler Aldridge (0.944 sg:easy fairways vs. -0.03 sg:total)
Bobby Wyatt (0.065 sg:easy fairways vs. -0.825 sg:total)
Ryan Armour (0.732 sg:easy fairways vs. 0.066 sg:total)
Carl Pettersson (0.808 sg:easy fairways vs. 0.159 sg:total)
Hiroshi Iwata (0.653 sg:easy fairways vs. 0.172 sg:total)
Steven Alker (0.492 sg:easy fairways vs. 0.035 sg:total)
Geoff Ogilvy (0.912 sg:easy fairways vs. 0.466 sg:total)
Dicky Pride (-0.004 sg:easy fairways vs. -0.438 sg:total)
Eric Axley (0.058 sg:easy fairways vs. -0.368 sg:total)

Excluding the Zurich Classic team event, Kelly Kraft has finished better than T15 on three occasions in his career, all three came on weeks where the fairways were easy to hit. If you’re looking to bucket him into one specific course trait, you want to target him on easy fairways.

Boo Weekley, on the other hand, really loses his edge when the fairways are generous. He usually picks up a shot or two just by keeping it so straight off the tee, but if everyone is hitting the fairways at a high clip, then Boo is right in line with the field and then has to pick up ground with the short game which is not his strong suit.

Easy-to-Hit Greens

Some courses are easy because the fairways are generous. Others are easy because the greens are huge and/or receptive.

TPC Deere Run hits both categories. They sort of go hand-in-hand in this situation because more approach shots from the fairway lead to more spin control once it lands.

The Top 10 Easy GIR Specialists:

Brad Fritsch (1.044 sg:easy GIR vs. 0.124 sg:total)
Tag Ridings (0.663 sg:easy GIR vs. -0.227 sg:total)
Mark Anderson (0.466 sg:easy GIR vs. -0.18 sg:total)
Johnson Wagner (1.131 sg:easy GIR vs. 0.499 sg:total)
Bobby Wyatt (-0.21 sg:easy GIR vs. -0.825 sg:total)
Patton Kizzire (1.087 sg:easy GIR vs. 0.54 sg:total)
Jason Bohn (1.135 sg:easy GIR vs. 0.64 sg:total)
Cody Gribble (1.082 sg:easy GIR vs. 0.604 sg:total)
Tyler Aldridge (0.427 sg:easy GIR vs. -0.03 sg:total)
Kevin Kisner (1.791 sg:easy GIR vs. 1.349 sg:total)

There is a lot of elite putters if you sort the table at the bottom by EASY GIR.

That includes Kevin Kisner who is nearly a half shot better (per round) when playing on easy-to-hit greens. Common sense says that if greens are easy to hit then the great putters should be able to use their best weapon more often.

If we look to the bottom of the list, we see Bubba Watson near the bottom AGAIN (Easy Fairways). I would guess the lack of course fit is the reason he hasn’t played this event since 2010, but his long-term baseline should make up for what he’s lacking in course fit. Kind of like Phil Mickelson last week.

Summertime Specialists

When summertime comes around, we know some golfers are consistently elevating their game to ensure they retain their TOUR card.

Others are ramping up their schedule to make sure they peak for all of the major championships.

Some golfers just like the type of golf courses that get played during the summer portion of the PGA TOUR schedule (northern states, bentgrass greens, weak fields).

The Top 10 Summer Specialists:

Dicky Pride (0.737 sg:summer vs. -0.438 sg:total)
Kelly Kraft (1.343 sg:summer vs. 0.351 sg:total)
Andres Romero (1.063 sg:summer vs. 0.275 sg:total)
Johnson Wagner (1.23 sg:summer vs. 0.499 sg:total)
Brad Fritsch (0.767 sg:summer vs. 0.124 sg:total)
Steven Bowditch (0.092 sg:summer vs. -0.498 sg:total)
Brett Stegmaier (0.742 sg:summer vs. 0.154 sg:total)
Ricky Barnes (1.011 sg:summer vs. 0.491 sg:total)
Gonzalo Fernandez-Castano (0.757 sg:summer vs. 0.238 sg:total)
Geoff Ogilvy (0.972 sg:summer vs. 0.466 sg:total)

Robert Streb is a little farther down the list, but he’s an interesting name here. He’s posted 14 career top 10s, with six of them coming in the summer. Last week could be the start of a little hot streak.

On the flip side, Zac Blair has yet to get much done in the summer months. In 19 summer starts, he’s posted just one top 30.

TPC Courses

A lot of TPC courses have the same maintenance practices and same general idea for playability.

That connects them in a way, and some golfers thrive on a TPC setup. Let’s see who they are…

The Top 10 TPC Specialists:

Troy Matteson (-0.409 sg:TPC vs. -1.295 sg:total)
Boo Weekley (1.286 sg:TPC vs. 0.473 sg:total)
Daniel Berger (2.248 sg:TPC vs. 1.608 sg:total)
Ryan Brehm (1.223 sg:TPC vs. 0.587 sg:total)
Davis Love III (0.668 sg:TPC vs. 0.065 sg:total)
Michael Kim (1.325 sg:TPC vs. 0.759 sg:total)
Kevin Tway (0.749 sg:TPC vs. 0.187 sg:total)
Carl Pettersson (0.705 sg:TPC vs. 0.159 sg:total)
Max Homa (-0.153 sg:TPC vs. -0.641 sg:total)
Steven Bowditch (-0.024 sg:TPC vs. -0.498 sg:total)

Boo Weekley crushes here but we already talked about his performance dips when the fairways are easy-to-hit. Something has to give.

Both of Daniel Berger’s wins came at TPC Southwind, but do we need a larger sample size before we declare him a true TPC specialist? Perhaps.

Baseline Performance

In our search for a specialist we want to find a good course fit. At the same time, we don’t want to rely on a career-week just to find a top 30. Let’s remove any golfers that fall below the average baseline performance for this week’s field:

Tyrone Van Aswegen
Robert Garrigus
Miguel Angel Carballo
Mark Hubbard

These would be the GPP-Only Specialists with a good course fit, but none of them leap off the page as must-target options.

The Specialists

Geoff Ogilvy
Michael Kim
Chris Stroud
Zach Johnson
Alex Cejka

geoff-ogilvy-300x200

Our specialist this week is Geoff Ogilvy!

Ogilvy popped up with a T13 at the Quicken Loans just a few weeks ago. On top of that, he’s actually riding a cut-streak of five straight. Like Putnam last week, his baseline performance is borderline, but he’s a proven winner. He’s also on a mission to regain his full PGA TOUR status, so I’m willing to get on board.

Michael Kim is someone who has yet to showcase the upside but his cut-making abilities are top notch. With a great course fit, could this finally be the week he breaks through the glass ceiling?

Stroud is 7-for-8 at this event, including a pair of top 15s, so the course clearly suits. Also fighting for status, so I don’t mind a stab at the Texan.

ZJ needs no introduction, and his track record at TPC Deere Run is well-documented. Don’t be scared of his season-long form, he’s worth the price this week.

Lastly Alex Cejka brings some borderline form, but just enough to be serviceable in this week field. Also has a T3 on his TPC Deere Run resume (2006).

The Anti-Specialists

The specialists above are positive in all four angles, but which golfers are the opposite and show a poor course fit?

Lucas Glover
Zac Blair

Both of these golfers seem to struggle in the summer and Glover really can’t figure out teh bentgrass greens on a consistent basis. I am fine with a full fade of both this week.

Best of luck everyone!

Below is a table with the full specialist data. Any fields with a 0 in them mean the sample size is not large enough. There is a minimum of 25 rounds to qualify for each angle.

The SG:Total column is a baseline performance measure (since 2014),

Josh Culp (futureoffantasy)

Josh didn’t own a set of golf clubs until after college but his love for the game now grows exponentially. He uses in-depth statistical analysis while trying to avoid the landmines that come with using traditional, outdated PGA stats. He can be found elsewhere writing for Rotoworld and Future of Fantasy. He can be found on twitter @futureoffantasy.
