Searching for a Specialist: John Deere Classic

With The Open Championship on deck, we get a thin field assembled in the Midwest for the John Deere Classic.

Let’s break down TPC Deere Run to see who might be a good course fit.

Recapping last week, our specialists went 0-for-2… OUCH! There’s no sugarcoating that one. It was an awful week for Danny Lee and Robert Garrigus. Let’s stick to the process and see who pops this week at the JDC.

For the John Deere Classic, we will look at performance on Bentgrass Greens, performance on Less-than-Driver Courses, performance on Easy-to-Hit Fairways, performance in Weak Fields, and performance on Easy-to-Hit Greens.

Here we go …

Bentgrass Greens

It’s that time of the year where bentgrass remains the dominant grass type on the schedule.

That means recent form should remain relevant as we’ve seen plenty of bent lately.

The 10 Bentgrass Specialists:

Tim Herron (0.342 sg:bentgrass vs. -0.39 sg:total)
Jonathan Randolph (0.488 sg:bentgrass vs. -0.136 sg:total)
Mackenzie Hughes (1.17 sg:bentgrass vs. 0.736 sg:total)
Robert Garrigus (1.074 sg:bentgrass vs. 0.645 sg:total)
Billy Hurley III (0.972 sg:bentgrass vs. 0.546 sg:total)
David Lingmerth (1.458 sg:bentgrass vs. 1.045 sg:total)
Steven Bowditch (-0.877 sg:bentgrass vs. -1.281 sg:total)
Chad Campbell (1.239 sg:bentgrass vs. 0.86 sg:total)
David Hearn (1.093 sg:bentgrass vs. 0.775 sg:total)
Chris Stroud (0.921 sg:bentgrass vs. 0.604 sg:total)

Quantity: The golfers that have the most strokes gained on bentgrass since 2014 are Bill Haas, Zach Johnson, David Lingmerth, Francesco Molinari, and Kyle Stanley.

We see two Canadians on the list. Another from Maryland. One from Minnesota and one from Sweden. If you grew up in a region with cool-season grasses, you are more likely to enjoy these bentgrass greens.

Less-than-Driver Courses

Last year Wesley Bryan had this to say about TPC Deere Run, “I like the way it looks off the tee as well. You don’t have to hit it overly far. That kind of plays into my hand a little bit.”

It sure does Wes, and your stats back you up…

The Top 10 Less-than-Driver Specialists

Wesley Bryan (1.515 sg:less-than-driver vs. 0.801 sg:total)
Stephan Jaeger (0.738 sg:less-than-driver vs. 0.21 sg:total)
Robert Allenby (-0.444 sg:less-than-driver vs. -0.869 sg:total)
Joel Dahmen (1.188 sg:less-than-driver vs. 0.794 sg:total)
Dominic Bozzelli (0.617 sg:less-than-driver vs. 0.26 sg:total)
Roberto Diaz (0.074 sg:less-than-driver vs. -0.275 sg:total)
Kelly Kraft (0.789 sg:less-than-driver vs. 0.459 sg:total)
Kyle Stanley (1.623 sg:less-than-driver vs. 1.326 sg:total)
Charlie Beljan (-1.056 sg:less-than-driver vs. -1.338 sg:total)
Nicholas Lindheim (0.417 sg:less-than-driver vs. 0.141 sg:total)

Quantity: Golfers with the most weighted strokes gained on less-than-driver courses since 2014 are Kyle Stanley, Zach Johnson, William McGirt, Chris Kirk, and Ryan Moore.

You could call this angle the “WEB.COM ANGLEAKA the WEDGE.com Tour. The courses on the lower circuit are generally less demanding off the tee and after that, they allow for a lot of wedges on approach. That is what golfers will see this week.

Easy-to-Hit Fairways

TPC Deere Run has the widest fairways on TOUR.

The rough is pretty tough and there are plenty of fairway bunkers but overall these fairways are very generous.

That means fewer penalties and also means more approach shots from the fairway which allows these pros to really control their ball.

The Top 10 Easy Fairway Specialists:

Troy Matteson (-0.554 sg:easy fairways vs. -1.308 sg:total)
Charlie Beljan (-0.633 sg:easy fairways vs. -1.338 sg:total)
Nicholas Lindheim (0.84 sg:easy fairways vs. 0.141 sg:total)
Aaron Wise (2.038 sg:easy fairways vs. 1.344 sg:total)
Martin Flores (1.173 sg:easy fairways vs. 0.598 sg:total)
Patrick Rodgers (1.359 sg:easy fairways vs. 0.844 sg:total)
Kelly Kraft (0.968 sg:easy fairways vs. 0.459 sg:total)
Brice Garnett (0.924 sg:easy fairways vs. 0.424 sg:total)
Brian Gay (1.481 sg:easy fairways vs. 0.992 sg:total)
Rob Oppenheim (0.744 sg:easy fairways vs. 0.259 sg:total)

Quantity: Most weighted strokes gained on courses with easy-to-hit fairways since 2014 are Zach Johnson, Ryan Moore, Bryson DeChambeau, Patrick Rodgers, and Kevin Streelman.

Aaron Wise and Patrick Rodgers are both big hitters with a lot of pedigree. I think they are both still learning how to reign in that power so courses like this allow grip it and rip it on the par 5s but take less club on the par 4s and keep themselves in position.

Weak Field Events

A lot of the big names are playing overseas in the Scottish Open. Others are resting before The Open Championship. Either way, this is a thin field.

Some golfers love the challenge of beating the best in the world. Others like to feast on these weaker-field events and retain their TOUR card by posting top 10s in these type of tournaments.

The Top 10 Weak Field Specialists:

Andrew Landry (1.84 sg:weak vs. 0.821 sg:total)
Francesco Molinari (2.966 sg:weak vs. 1.959 sg:total)
Austin Cook (2.151 sg:weak vs. 1.525 sg:total)
Ryan Moore (2.313 sg:weak vs. 1.727 sg:total)
Ethan Tracy (0.236 sg:weak vs. -0.349 sg:total)
Tyler Duncan (1.071 sg:weak vs. 0.528 sg:total)
Andrew Putnam (1.31 sg:weak vs. 0.78 sg:total)
Daniel Chopra (-0.486 sg:weak vs. -0.958 sg:total)
Ryan Blaum (1.169 sg:weak vs. 0.751 sg:total)
Nick Taylor (1.076 sg:weak vs. 0.661 sg:total)

Quantity: Most weighted strokes gained against Weak Fields since 2014 are Kevin Streelman, Chris Kirk, Chad Campbell, David Hearn, and Chez Reavie.

Landry really popped at Oakmont a few years back but all of his other damage has been done in these weak events like the CareerBuilder, Valero, RSM Classic, etc.

Francesco Molinari was winless on the PGA TOUR for far too long. A big part of that was him playing in only the strongest of fields. If he would have ditched the European Tour at his first chance and played in America for his entire career, I think we see him with a handful of wins. Most of them coming against fields like this.

Easy-to-Hit Greens

With more than 71 percent of tee shots finding the fairway here at TPC Deere Run, it’s no surprise that a whole boatload of greens are also found (~71% as well).

When greens are easy to hit, that means golfers will have a higher number of birdie-or-better looks and fewer scrambling opportunities.

The Top 10 Easy GIR Specialists:

Patton Kizzire (1.725 sg:easy GIR vs. 0.756 sg:total)
Keith Mitchell (1.604 sg:easy GIR vs. 1.002 sg:total)
Robert Garrigus (1.203 sg:easy GIR vs. 0.645 sg:total)
Nicholas Lindheim (0.683 sg:easy GIR vs. 0.141 sg:total)
Charlie Beljan (-0.85 sg:easy GIR vs. -1.338 sg:total)
Johnson Wagner (1.176 sg:easy GIR vs. 0.69 sg:total)
Davis Love III (0.392 sg:easy GIR vs. -0.052 sg:total)
Jonathan Byrd (0.9 sg:easy GIR vs. 0.466 sg:total)
Michael Kim (0.926 sg:easy GIR vs. 0.51 sg:total)
Shawn Stefani (1.11 sg:easy GIR vs. 0.698 sg:total)

Quantity: Most weighted strokes gained on Easy GIR courses since 2014 are Zach Johnson, Chez Reavie, Patton Kizzire, Scott Piercy, and John Huh.

Kizzire, Mithell, and Garrigus are all fun names to consider. They can go low with the best of them and courses with easy-to-hit greens allow their short-game struggles to be masked.

Baseline Performance

We now have a list of eight golfers that are positive in all of the angles above.

Golfers that are a good course fit but also bring some question marks in the form or baseline performance areas include:

Cameron Percy
Kelly Kraft
Derek Fathauer
Davis Love III
David Hearn
Shawn Stefani

Kraft is coming off a near-win last week and also has a T5 on his JDC resume. Very interesting, despite his low baseline numbers.

None of the others catch my eye too much but they do deserve a look if you are diving for deep sleepers.

The Specialist

Johnson Wagner
Harold Varner III

The specialist this week is Johnson Wagner!

Article Image

Wagner arrives with finishes of T41 or better in four of his last six starts. Pretty solid by his standards.

More impressively, Wagner has THREE TOP 10s here at the John Deere Classic.

Another way to look at that is that 3 of his 22 career top 10s have come here (14%). Only 3% of his career starts have come at TPC Deere Run.

He’s made 8 starts here so that’s a 38% ratio of top 10s at TPC Deere Run. His top-10 rate on all other courses is 19-for-297 (6%)… There is clearly something that suits his eye here in Silvis, Illinois.

The second name is Harold Varner III who arrives off a T5 at The Greenbrier, tying his career-best finish (2015-16 OHL Classic).

Despite all the length HV3 has, nearly all of his career top 20s have come on courses that allow golfers to club down. I consider Varner to be a pinseeker so I suppose when you allow him plenty of chances from the fairway, he will stick more than his fair share inside a 15-foot bubble.

Anti-Specialists

We’ve identified the golfers that grade out positive in all of the course-fit angles, but who does the opposite?

Ryan Palmer
George McNeill
Nick Watney

Sometimes these anti-specialists have some good course history but not really this week. Palmer and Watney have both been pretty dreadful and McNeill I reserve for bermudagrass greens and/or windy conditions. Neither will be on tap this week.

Super Simple Specialist Ratings

The goal of this article is to isolate course fit, to see who should outperform their baseline.

However, anyone with common sense knows that baseline talent (and current form) can’t be ignored when handicapping golf.

Combining Baseline Strokes Gained with Current Form and Specialist Rating, we get a Top 20 ranking that looks like this:

Francesco Molinari
Joaquin Niemann
Austin Cook
Bryson DeChambeau
Zach Johnson
Ryan Moore
Brian Gay
Aaron Wise
Bill Haas
David Lingmerth
C.T. Pan
Chris Kirk
Kyle Stanley
Patrick Rodgers
J.T. Poston
Steve Stricker
Wesley Bryan
Kevin Streelman
Keith Mitchell
Harold Varner III

It wouldn’t surprise anyone to see a final leaderboard like that. Especially those top 6 who all grade out well in nearly all metrics.

Our specialist this week, Johnson Wagner, has mediocre baseline and form numbers so he still finds himself down at 43, despite the great course fit.

Best of luck everyone!

Below is a table with the full specialist data. Any fields with a 0 in them mean the sample size is not large enough. There is a minimum of 30 rounds to qualify for each angle.

The SG:TOTAL column is a baseline performance measure (since 2014). It is time-weighted so more recent results count for more than finishes from years ago.

HISTORY column is a weighted performance metric based on course history. I’ve made small adjustments for sample sizes but be sure to check on number of course rounds before blindly following this number.

FORM looks at the total strokes gained, adjusted to field strength, over the last 8 weeks (PGA TOUR and European Tour).

SIMPLE RATING looks at SGTotal, FORM, and SPECIALIST RATING to create a simple rating that includes course fit but doesn’t overweight it.

Josh Culp (futureoffantasy)

Josh didn’t own a set of golf clubs until after college but his love for the game now grows exponentially. He uses in-depth statistical analysis while trying to avoid the landmines that come with using traditional, outdated PGA stats. He can be found elsewhere writing for Rotoworld and Future of Fantasy. He can be found on twitter @futureoffantasy.
