Searching for a Specialist: OHL Classic
Just a few more weeks until the holiday break, making this a perfect time to have a good week in DFS golf. In this article, we will last at past performance at similar events to hone in on what golfers should be a good course fit at El Camaleon Golf Club.
Last week our specialist was Scott Piercy and he finished T32 on the week. The winds whipped through Las Vegas last week to destroy one of our angles (Easy GIR courses) but that is why we include at least four angles. Security blankets. Let’s try to match or improve on that T32 finish this week.
For the OHL Classic we will look at Performance on Easy Courses, Weak Field Events, Fall Season, Coastal Courses, and Short Courses.
Here we go …
Easy Courses
This week’s course has been a walk in the park, especially since the event moved to November four years ago.
Easy courses often bring the entire field closer together. All of these golfers were elite growing up, but it’s really hard to adjust to golf courses set up to test PGA TOUR talent.
When courses are easier, it resembles more of the courses that these golfers all grew up playing.
The 10 Easy Course Specialists:
Anirban Lahiri (1.601 sg:easy vs. 0.921 sg:total)
Patton Kizzire (1.112 sg:easy vs. 0.637 sg:total)
Johnson Wagner (0.999 sg:easy vs. 0.546 sg:total)
Brian Davis (0.504 sg:easy vs. 0.072 sg:total)
Ryan Blaum (1.234 sg:easy vs. 0.804 sg:total)
Si Woo Kim (1.087 sg:easy vs. 0.679 sg:total)
Steve Wheatcroft (0.712 sg:easy vs. 0.328 sg:total)
Richy Werenski (0.733 sg:easy vs. 0.352 sg:total)
Mackenzie Hughes (1.237 sg:easy vs. 0.879 sg:total)
Cameron Tringale (1.249 sg:easy vs. 0.921 sg:total)
Sometimes it’s all mental when it comes to performing on easy courses. Does a particular golfer get down on himself when he bogeys a hole? Give him an easier course and he’ll be less likely to go on a bogey train.
It’s not a surprise to see some of the elite talent suffer in his angle. Golfers like Graeme McDowell, Kevin Chappell, and Rickie Fowler are all near the bottom. They prefer a tough test, but that doesn’t mean they can’t shine in a birdie fest like this. It’s just a little less likely.
Weak Field Events
Some golfers love to play up to their competition.
Others like to feast on the weak.
For this week we prefer the latter because most of the game’s elite don’t make the trip down to Mexico.
The Top 10 Weak Field Specialists are:
Abraham Ancer (0.245 sg:weak vs. -0.363 sg:total)
Oscar Fraustro (0.013 sg:weak vs. -0.447 sg:total)
Ryan Moore (1.99 sg:weak vs. 1.537 sg:total)
Patton Kizzire (1.033 sg:weak vs. 0.637 sg:total)
Nicholas Lindheim (0.015 sg:weak vs. -0.352 sg:total)
Ryan Blaum (1.136 sg:weak vs. 0.804 sg:total)
J.J. Henry (0.502 sg:weak vs. 0.193 sg:total)
Brett Stegmaier (0.475 sg:weak vs. 0.171 sg:total)
Nick Taylor (0.993 sg:weak vs. 0.708 sg:total)
Scott Brown (1.074 sg:weak vs. 0.813 sg:total)
Abraham Ancer has yet to break out on the PGA TOUR but if/when he does it will likely come against a weaker field like this weeks. Add that to the fact he grew up in Mexico, and we have a nice sleeper brewing.
On the flip side, Rickie Fowler is at the very bottom here. He does his best work in the big events. In fact, it’s a bit odd to see him here. From a talent perspective, he’s best in the field but his motivation is a question mark.
Performance in the Fall
Whether it’s scheduling or golf course conditions, some golfers just love to peg it in the fall.
The Top 10 Fall Specialists:
Jason Bohn (1.578 sg:fall vs. 0.592 sg:total)
Anirban Lahiri (1.793 sg:fall vs. 0.921 sg:total)
Patton Kizzire (1.484 sg:fall vs. 0.637 sg:total)
Fabian Gomez (1.093 sg:fall vs. 0.49 sg:total)
Brett Stegmaier (0.763 sg:fall vs. 0.171 sg:total)
Brice Garnett (0.771 sg:fall vs. 0.199 sg:total)
Alex Cejka (1.253 sg:fall vs. 0.707 sg:total)
Luke List (1.915 sg:fall vs. 1.371 sg:total)
Peter Malnati (0.647 sg:fall vs. 0.11 sg:total)
Ryan Blaum (1.339 sg:fall vs. 0.804 sg:total)
Last week the fall trend continued for Luke List, who now has seven top 20s in October or November.
Jason Bohn hasn’t been the same since his scary heart attack on the course. While his course history and course fit look good, his form is just too far gone to trust.
Coastal Courses
Playing by the water often means that a little bit of wind can make a bigger difference.
Golfers who can judge that are often at a big advantage. Let’s see who fits the bill…
The Top 10 Coastal Specialists:
J.J. Spaun (1.559 sg:coastal vs. 0.79 sg:total)
Patrick Rodgers (1.44 sg:coastal vs. 0.689 sg:total)
Gary Woodland (2.122 sg:coastal vs. 1.552 sg:total)
D.A. Points (0.485 sg:coastal vs. -0.074 sg:total)
Brian Gay (0.782 sg:coastal vs. 0.247 sg:total)
C.T. Pan (1.129 sg:coastal vs. 0.684 sg:total)
Charles Howell III (1.747 sg:coastal vs. 1.304 sg:total)
Peter Malnati (0.532 sg:coastal vs. 0.11 sg:total)
Martin Flores (1.134 sg:coastal vs. 0.719 sg:total)
Jason Kokrak (1.606 sg:coastal vs. 1.192 sg:total)
A few of these names pop off the page. Spaun, Rodgers, and Pan are all from the West Coast so they are likely very familar playing close to a large body of water.
Near the bottom, we have some big names like Charley Hoffman, Bryson DeChambeau, and Rickie Fowler. They aren’t fade-worthy on this alone, but it is a ding on them this week if you need a tiebreaker.
Short Courses
Looking at courses of similar lengths is an easy way to see who relies on distance.
At the same time, it can also be a way of seeing who actually benefits from getting their distance restricted or limited.
.
The Top 10 Short Course Specialists:
Patrick Rodgers (1.554 sg:short vs. 0.689 sg:total)
Graeme McDowell (1.984 sg:short vs. 1.282 sg:total)
Anirban Lahiri (1.552 sg:short vs. 0.921 sg:total)
Gary Woodland (2.15 sg:short vs. 1.552 sg:total)
Fabian Gomez (1.027 sg:short vs. 0.49 sg:total)
Brian Gay (0.751 sg:short vs. 0.247 sg:total)
Brice Garnett (0.653 sg:short vs. 0.199 sg:total)
Aaron Baddeley (1.21 sg:short vs. 0.79 sg:total)
Blayne Barber (1.02 sg:short vs. 0.604 sg:total)
Shawn Stefani (1.245 sg:short vs. 0.854 sg:total)
Patrick Rodgers is the perfect example of a bomber that benefits from having to club down. Rodgers is a bit wayward with his driver, but if he clubs down to a 3-wood or 2-iron, he is still able to hang with the shorter hitters but he’s much more accurate. Historically, this has helped Rodgers quite a bit on these short tracks.
The same can be said for Baddeley, who generally suffers from an errant tee shot (or two, or three) per round. If he only has to hit a few drivers per round he can limit that damage and let his short game go to work.
At the same time, there are stereotypical shorties like G-Mac and Brian Gay who really love when courses force the longer hitters to club down, putting them on an equal footing off the tee.
Baseline Performance
When searching for a specialist we try to narrow down our list to golfers with a positive rating in ALL five categories. Right now we have six golfers that qualify but we can eliminate four based on their baseline performance since 2014.
These golfers are all lower than 70th in this week’s field when it comes to baseline Strokes Gained. While they are all four a good course fit, it is asking a lot for them to actually contend.
Jason Bohn
Jonathan Byrd
Fabian Gomez
Peter Malnati
The Specialist
Kevin Streelman
Charles Howell III
The specialist this week is Kevin Streelman.

Put Streelman in a shootout on the coast where distance is not required and he sets up nicely.
Need some examples? Other than a pair of top 5s at this event, he’s also posted podium finishes at the Tournament of Champions and Puerto Rico Open. Both are coastal tracks where the winners often have to rack up loads of birdies.
The second specialist is Charles Howell III, who arrives with back-to-back top 20s on his recent form sheet. He’s also picked off six top 20s in eight trips to this week’s course. A good course fit and the history here supports that.
Anti-Specialists
David Lingmerth
Hunter Mahan
Sung Kang
Chris Stroud
Billy Hurley III
Jon Curran
The only name that potentially interests me here is Sung Kang. The rest I will fade entirely.
Super Simple Specialist Ratings
The goal of this article is to isolate course fit, to see who should outperform their baseline.
However, anyone with common sense knows that baseline talent (and current form) can’t be ignored when handicapping golf.
Combining Baseline Strokes Gained with Current Form and Specialist Rating, we get a Top 20 ranking that looks like this:
Gary Woodland
Anirban Lahiri
Ryan Moore
Luke List
Ben Silverman
Kevin Streelman
Charles Howell III
Jason Kokrak
Shawn Stefani
Patton Kizzire
Patrick Rodgers
Austin Cook
Scott Brown
Byeong Hun An
Pat Perez
Graeme Mcdowell
Alex Cejka
J.J. Spaun
Tyler Duncan
Whee Kim
Silverman and Duncan are benefitting from a small sample size at the moment, but the rest of the list passes the eye test.
Best of luck everyone!
Below is a table with the full specialist data. Any fields with a 0 in them mean the sample size is not large enough. There is a minimum of 30 rounds to qualify for each angle.
The SG:Total column is a baseline performance measure (since 2014).
Form looks at the total strokes gained, adjusted to field strength, over the last 8 weeks (PGA, Web, and Euro).
