Searching for a Specialist: Quicken Loans National

Welcome to this week’s specialist search.

Our goal is to page through the history books to determine what golfers should fit the course. The course is TPC Potomac this week.

We know the course is a Par 70 and features Bentgrass Greens, so those will be two angles we take a look at. We can also look at performance on TPC Courses along with performance in both the summer and hot weather.

Here we go …

Bentgrass Greens

Much like last week, we have another bentgrass course on tap.

It is no coincidence that the summer schedule is littered with bentgrass courses, compared to the fall and spring. The northern states are often hit-or-miss in terms of weather unless you schedule them in the summer. So that is what the PGA TOUR does.

The Top 10 Bentgrass Specialists are:

Jonathan Randolph (0.591 sg:bentgrass vs. -0.084 sg:total)
Chris Stroud (1.191 sg:bentgrass vs. 0.715 sg:total)
Billy Hurley III (1.134 sg:bentgrass vs. 0.733 sg:total)
Kevin Tway (0.56 sg:bentgrass vs. 0.161 sg:total)
Rickie Fowler (2.537 sg:bentgrass vs. 2.142 sg:total)
Johnson Wagner (0.843 sg:bentgrass vs. 0.457 sg:total)
Robert Garrigus (0.789 sg:bentgrass vs. 0.409 sg:total)
Geoff Ogilvy (0.782 sg:bentgrass vs. 0.412 sg:total)
Russell Henley (1.537 sg:bentgrass vs. 1.204 sg:total)
Kyle Reifers (1.033 sg:bentgrass vs. 0.701 sg:total)

Rickie Fowler is the standout from above. He outperforms his baseline by nearly 4/10th of a stroke per round when taking on bentgrass greens. That is picking up an extra shot per tournament, on average, versus his baseline Strokes Gained which is high to begin with.

Russell Henley is another interesting name on the list. He gets the reputation for being a bermuda stud because he’s from the South and went to Georiga, but his results show that bentgrass greens suit him well.

This is the part where I include my auto-fade Lucas Glover on bentgrass message. He is more than 3/4 of a shot worse per round on bentgrass compared to his baseline performance.

Performance on TPC Courses

The TPC Network of courses started with TPC Sawgrass, and lots of the courses in the network play somewhat similarly.

This week’s course, TPC Potomac, was the fifth course built in the TPC network. While it’s been drastically renovated since its original design, there will still be certain maintenance techniques and course setup quirks that correlate it to other TPCs.

The 10 TPC Specialists:

Boo Weekley (1.324 sg:TPC vs. 0.467 sg:total)
Si Woo Kim (1.621 sg:TPC vs. 0.862 sg:total)
Rod Pampling (0.862 sg:TPC vs. 0.224 sg:total)
Kevin Tway (0.775 sg:TPC vs. 0.161 sg:total)
Michael Kim (1.256 sg:TPC vs. 0.704 sg:total)
Billy Horschel (1.841 sg:TPC vs. 1.32 sg:total)
Chris Kirk (1.645 sg:TPC vs. 1.212 sg:total)
K.J. Choi (1.02 sg:TPC vs. 0.629 sg:total)
Sung Kang (1.338 sg:TPC vs. 1.003 sg:total)
Seung-yul Noh (1.041 sg:TPC vs. 0.718 sg:total)

On the bottom of the list we have David Lingmerth. He arrives in stellar form and he won at this course on the Web.com Tour back in 2012. Was that a case of being much better than the field he faced or does this particular TPC course fit his eye? That is a decision we need to make this week because he is going to be a very popular selection.

Performance in Hot Weather

The current forecasts calls for upper 80s and low 90s throughout the week.

Golfers that grew up playing in these conditions should feel right at home while others will let the heat get the best of them.

The Top 10 Hot Weather Specialists:

Si Woo Kim (1.945 sg:hot weather vs. 0.862 sg:total)
Jason Kokrak (1.946 sg:hot weather vs. 1.082 sg:total)
Derek Fathauer (1.189 sg:hot weather vs. 0.407 sg:total)
Aaron Baddeley (1.462 sg:hot weather vs. 0.715 sg:total)
Whee Kim (1.202 sg:hot weather vs. 0.49 sg:total)
Chris Kirk (1.916 sg:hot weather vs. 1.212 sg:total)
David Lingmerth (1.533 sg:hot weather vs. 0.869 sg:total)
Justin Thomas (2.39 sg:hot weather vs. 1.743 sg:total)
Sam Saunders (0.729 sg:hot weather vs. 0.213 sg:total)
Greg Owen (0.585 sg:hot weather vs. 0.102 sg:total)

Plenty of Florida residents on the list. Someone like Justin Thomas is definitely notable on the list above. We’ve seen him head overseas and win twice at the CIMB Classic, an event that is typically hot and sticky.

Fittingly at the bottom of the list we have a Canuck, Graham DeLaet. He practices in Arizona these days but it seems he is already stuck in his Canadian ways. Since 2014, he shows a decline of 1.127 strokes per round when playing in weather over 86 degrees.

Par 70 Courses

When par 70s come around, we know golfers will have just two par 5s to score on. That puts an emphasis on par-4 scoring and also highlights any par-3 blemishes since it’s harder to make up ground after a big number.

Golfers that don’t rely on par 5s and perform better on par 70s include the following…

The Top 10 Par 70 Specialists:

Greg Owen (0.923 sg:par70 vs. 0.102 sg:total)
Billy Horschel (2.004 sg:par70 vs. 1.32 sg:total)
Brett Stegmaier (0.743 sg:par70 vs. 0.136 sg:total)
Si Woo Kim (1.465 sg:par70 vs. 0.862 sg:total)
Jason Gore (0.773 sg:par70 vs. 0.227 sg:total)
David Lingmerth (1.406 sg:par70 vs. 0.869 sg:total)
Kevin Chappell (1.834 sg:par70 vs. 1.328 sg:total)
Brian Gay (0.58 sg:par70 vs. 0.134 sg:total)
Tyrone Van Aswegen (0.642 sg:par70 vs. 0.225 sg:total)
Kelly Kraft (0.594 sg:par70 vs. 0.212 sg:total)

A lot of really good iron play on the list above. It would make sense that they can handle any of the par 3s a course throws at them and also ball-strike the par 4s without finding many doubles or worse.

Andrew Loupe is near the bottom of the list. His form is so off the radar, I don’t think he’d be on many short lists anyway, but the big hitter is more than 1/2 a shot worse per round when taking on a par 70.

Summertime Specialists

We are now two weeks into summer which means hot weather which we already highlighted but it also means scheduling.

Some golfers know how to manage their yearly schedules, allowing themselves to peak during the summer since that is where the most major championships take place.

The Top 10 Summer Specialists:

Si Woo Kim (2.076 sg:summer vs. 0.862 sg:total)
Johnson Wagner (1.192 sg:summer vs. 0.457 sg:total)
Ricky Barnes (0.968 sg:summer vs. 0.457 sg:total)
Geoff Ogilvy (0.875 sg:summer vs. 0.412 sg:total)
Nick Watney (1.351 sg:summer vs. 0.917 sg:total)
Rickie Fowler (2.555 sg:summer vs. 2.142 sg:total)
Sam Saunders (0.604 sg:summer vs. 0.213 sg:total)
Robert Garrigus (0.784 sg:summer vs. 0.409 sg:total)
J.J. Henry (0.434 sg:summer vs. 0.088 sg:total)
Cameron Percy (0.798 sg:summer vs. 0.456 sg:total)

As you’d expect, there is a decent correlation between hot weather specialists and summertime specialists, but there are definitely golfers that play better in the summer but don’t improve in the heat, and vice versa.

Who has the most top 25s on TOUR during the summer, since 2014? That would be Patrick Reed with 18 (tied with Jason Day who is not in the field). Reed’s top-10 rate in the summer is not in the elite category but he does tend to find his way into the top 25 more often than not in the summertime (58% since 2014).

Baseline Performance

In our search for a specialist we want to find a good course fit. At the same time, we don’t want to rely on a career-week just to find a top 30. Let’s remove any golfers that fall below the average baseline performance for this week’s field:

Spencer Levin
Tyrone Van Aswegen
J.J. Henry
Greg Chalmers

These would be the GPP-Only Specialists with a good course fit, but none of them leap off the page as interesting options.

The Specialists

Si Woo Kim
Bud Cauley
Billy Hurley III
Danny Lee

Our specialist this week is Si Woo Kim!

The up-and-coming star who has been riddled with back injuries is our man this week. In 10 summertime starts he’s cracked the top 25 in seven of them. TPC courses seem to be right up his alley, as well, posting top 25s in 6-of-10 starts played on TPCs, including his monster win at TPC Sawgrass.

Bud Cauley is not the safest pick on the board, but he definitely brings the upside from week-to-week. He’s cracked the top 11 in 4 of his last 11 starts in the summer. During that stretch, he’s cracked the top 11 in 10 events, meaning most of his damage has been done in the summer.

Billy Hurley III is playing a home game and also plays the role of defending champ. I think he is very comfortable facing this week’s conditions.

Danny Lee looks like a great course fit and is recently engaged. Will that help or hurt him in the short term? Either way, this sets up pretty similarly to The Old White TPC which is where Lee picked up his first TOUR win.

The Anti-Specialists

The specialists above are positive in all five angles, but which golfers are the opposite and show a poor course fit?

Martin Flores
Peter Malnati
Andrew Loupe
Kevin Streelman
Jimmy Walker
Jim Herman
Martin Laird
Jonas Blixt

The top three are easy fades while you could make a case for the bottom five, I suppose. That being said, I am just fine leaving them off my target list. Perhaps a share or two of Walker for me.

Best of luck everyone!

Below is a table with the full specialist data. Any fields with a 0 in them mean the sample size is not large enough. There is a minimum of 25 rounds to qualify for each angle.

Josh Culp (futureoffantasy)

Josh didn’t own a set of golf clubs until after college but his love for the game now grows exponentially. He uses in-depth statistical analysis while trying to avoid the landmines that come with using traditional, outdated PGA stats. He can be found elsewhere writing for Rotoworld and Future of Fantasy.
