Searching for a Specialist: Quicken Loans National

Heading to the D.C. area for the Quicken Loans National, a field of 120 golfers will prep for TPC Potomac at Avenel Farm.

This course has only been used once at this event, so there isn’t much for course history. These are my favorite kind of weeks because course fit can provide that small edge but it’s not baked into pricing like course history usually is.

Last week was a tough week for the specialists group as C.T. Pan failed and Jordan Spieth continued with his run of mediocre play. Brian Harman did pop from the GPP-only section but I didn’t add him to my player pool personally as the recent rounds of 80+ scared me off a bit. Plenty of room for improvement this week!

For the Quicken Loans National, we will look at performance on Bentgrass Greens, performance on Hard Courses, performance on Par 70 Courses, Performance in the Heat, and finish up with Performance on TPC Courses.

Here we go …

Bentgrass Greens

Sticking around in the cool-season region, the TOUR heads to another bentgrass course.

The fairways and greens at TPC Potomac are bentgrass so let’s see who likes these surfaces…

The 10 Bentgrass Specialists:

Tim Herron (0.497 sg:bentgrass vs. -0.384 sg:total)
Robert Garrigus (1.301 sg:bentgrass vs. 0.694 sg:total)
Jonathan Randolph (0.486 sg:bentgrass vs. -0.16 sg:total)
Geoff Ogilvy (0.862 sg:bentgrass vs. 0.36 sg:total)
Billy Hurley III (1.017 sg:bentgrass vs. 0.553 sg:total)
Chad Campbell (1.367 sg:bentgrass vs. 0.892 sg:total)
David Lingmerth (1.425 sg:bentgrass vs. 1.022 sg:total)
Kevin Tway (1.377 sg:bentgrass vs. 1.015 sg:total)
Rickie Fowler (2.892 sg:bentgrass vs. 2.484 sg:total)
Whee Kim (0.894 sg:bentgrass vs. 0.524 sg:total)

Quantity: The golfers that have the most strokes gained on bentgrass since 2014 are Rickie Fowler, Marc Leishman, Bill Haas, Gary Woodland, and Kevin Na.

If we isolate the top-10 list to golfers with a 0.9 SGT or higher then we get names like Chad Campbell, Lingmerth, Tway, Fowler, Lahiri, and Danny Lee. Those names should certainly have our attention this week.

At the bottom we have J.J. Spaun who has done most of his damage on bermudagrass, early in his career.

Hard Courses

TPC Potomac was the fourth-hardest course last year and hardest non-major.

Early-week photos suggest the rough around the greens is nasty once again. Birdies and eagles should be tough to come by again this week…

The Top 10 Hard Course Specialists:

Jason Gore (1.378 sg:hard vs. 0.057 sg:total)
Jonathan Randolph (0.837 sg:hard vs. -0.16 sg:total)
Daniel Summerhays (1.522 sg:hard vs. 0.807 sg:total)
Aaron Baddeley (1.44 sg:hard vs. 0.893 sg:total)
D.A. Points (0.278 sg:hard vs. -0.248 sg:total)
Dominic Bozzelli (0.814 sg:hard vs. 0.279 sg:total)
David Lingmerth (1.501 sg:hard vs. 1.022 sg:total)
Ricky Barnes (1.046 sg:hard vs. 0.578 sg:total)
Sung Kang (1.232 sg:hard vs. 0.724 sg:total)
Sam Saunders (1.073 sg:hard vs. 0.633 sg:total)

Quantity: Golfers with the most weighted strokes gained on hard courses since 2014 are Rickie Fowler, Marc Leishman, Bill Haas, Kevin Na, and Francesco Molinari.

Keeping things to 0.9+ SGT, we see names like Lingmerth, Watney, Huh, Kokrak, and Tway.

At the bottom we have Kiradech Aphibarnrat. This may be surprising for anyone that just saw him at the U.S. Open but overall he has just two top 40s over his last 14 starts on tough courses. He will be on my fade list this week.

Par 70 Courses

With just two par 5s on the scorecard this week, golfers will need to plod their way around this difficult layout.

Golfers that can hang on the par 3s and more importantly, par 4s, are the golfers we need to target.

The Top 10 Par 70 Specialists:

Jason Gore (1.057 sg:par70 vs. 0.057 sg:total)
Tim Herron (0.527 sg:par70 vs. -0.384 sg:total)
Joel Dahmen (1.269 sg:par70 vs. 0.637 sg:total)
Danny Lee (1.545 sg:par70 vs. 0.96 sg:total)
David Lingmerth (1.572 sg:par70 vs. 0.991 sg:total)
Kelly Kraft (0.891 sg:par70 vs. 0.373 sg:total)
Geoff Ogilvy (0.8 sg:par70 vs. 0.356 sg:total)
Robert Streb (1.295 sg:par70 vs. 0.856 sg:total)
Dominic Bozzelli (0.728 sg:par70 vs. 0.297 sg:total)
Daniel Summerhays (1.225 sg:par70 vs. 0.807 sg:total)

Quantity: Most weighted strokes gained on easy-to-hit fairways since 2014 are Marc Leishman, Rickie Fowler, Kevin Na, Danny Lee, and Stewart Cink.

Joel Dahmen looks interesting here since he sits inside the top 20 in total strokes gained over the last 8 weeks (recent form).

At the bottom of the list we Chesson Hadley. I’ve highlighted this in the last few weeks as reasons to fade and it’s paid off. This week, he has a bit of history here at TPC Potomac. He finished runner-up here during a Web.com Tour event. So while his par-70 numbers are dreadful, I’m willing to give him a pass this week and take a few stabs.

Performance in the Heat

Weather in the area calls for temps in the 90s all week so being able to handle these conditions will be a big plus.

The Top 10 Hot Weather Specialists:

Brian Gay (1.863 sg:hot weather vs. 0.935 sg:total)
Cody Gribble (1.059 sg:hot weather vs. 0.155 sg:total)
Jason Gore (0.937 sg:hot weather vs. 0.057 sg:total)
Tim Herron (0.368 sg:hot weather vs. -0.384 sg:total)
Ryan Armour (1.524 sg:hot weather vs. 0.831 sg:total)
Ricky Barnes (1.217 sg:hot weather vs. 0.578 sg:total)
Jason Kokrak (1.866 sg:hot weather vs. 1.232 sg:total)
Nicholas Lindheim (0.657 sg:hot weather vs. 0.15 sg:total)
Troy Merritt (1.092 sg:hot weather vs. 0.596 sg:total)
Billy Horschel (1.726 sg:hot weather vs. 1.247 sg:total)

Quantity: Most weighted strokes gained in warm weather since 2014 are Kevin Na, Marc Leishman, Jason Kokrak, Billy Horschel, and Charles Howell III.

Brian Gay showed up near the bottom of the bentgrass column but he’s in good form and sits atop this angle. Overall, he’s someone to consider this week.

TPC Courses

Started in the 1980s, the TPC Network is generally known for superb practice facilities.

On top of that, they share a lot of similar course characteristics and agronomy practices. We see a lot of similar names rise to the top of leaderboards played on TPC layouts…

The Top 10 TPC Specialists:

Jason Gore (0.905 sg:TPC vs. 0.057 sg:total)
Billy Horschel (1.943 sg:TPC vs. 1.247 sg:total)
Trey Mullinax (1.426 sg:TPC vs. 0.868 sg:total)
Richy Werenski (1.106 sg:TPC vs. 0.554 sg:total)
Kevin Tway (1.546 sg:TPC vs. 1.014 sg:total)
Byeong Hun An (1.967 sg:TPC vs. 1.479 sg:total)
Danny Lee (1.462 sg:TPC vs. 0.99 sg:total)
Beau Hossler (1.783 sg:TPC vs. 1.339 sg:total)
Stewart Cink (1.718 sg:TPC vs. 1.327 sg:total)
Fabian Gomez (0.827 sg:TPC vs. 0.531 sg:total)

Quantity: Most weighted strokes gained on TPC courses since 2014 are Billy Horschel, Danny Lee, Martin Laird, Marc Leishman, and Kyle Stanley.

The top two names on this total strokes gained list both are based out of TPC courses. Horschel called TPC Sawgrass home for a long time while Danny Lee spends plenty of time at TPC Four Seasons.

Baseline Performance

We now have a list of 5 golfers that are positive in all five angles.

Golfers that are a good course fit but also bring some question marks in the form or baseline performance areas include:

Geoff Ogilvy
Chad Campbell
Billy Hurley III
Michael Kim

Not of these really catch my eye personally but nearly everyone is fair game in a small, weak field like this one.

The Specialist

Kevin Tway

The specialist this week is Kevin Tway!

kevin-tway-550x330

Just one name this week to check all the boxes.

Tway enters with three top 10s in the last two months so he also brings form.

Looking at his performance on bentgrass specifically, he’s made the cut in 13 of his last 14 starts on bentgrass with five top 20s in there.

Tway is still searching for his first PGA TOUR title and this week’s layout could provide a nice chance for him to go after that.

Other than the specialist, there are also a few interesting names near the top of the Specialist Rating column. Jason Gore fired the Web.com Tour course record here in 2013 (63) and David Lingmerth won the 2012 edition when the course hosted the Web.com Tour event.

We could say that’s a coincidence or maybe these numbers are pointing us in the right direction. Hopefully it’s the latter.

Anti-Specialists

We’ve identified the golfers that grade out positive in all five course-fit angles, but who does the opposite?

Martin Flores
Adam Hadwin
J.B. Holmes
Gary Woodland
Zac Blair

Names are Hadwin and Woodland are wildly underpriced based on their long-term talent but perhaps these sites are onto something there.

I wouldn’t call them automatic fades but if these names start to look really popular then I think it’s certainly worth considering a fade.

Super Simple Specialist Ratings

The goal of this article is to isolate course fit, to see who should outperform their baseline.

However, anyone with common sense knows that baseline talent (and current form) can’t be ignored when handicapping golf.

Combining Baseline Strokes Gained with Current Form and Specialist Rating, we get a Top 20 ranking that looks like this:

Kevin Tway
Kevin Na
Beau Hossler
Kyle Stanley
Jamie Lovemark
Stewart Cink
Byeong Hun An
Danny Lee
Billy Horschel
Joaquin Niemann
Francesco Molinari
David Lingmerth
Bill Haas
Ryan Armour
Brian Gay
Marc Leishman
Rickie Fowler
Si Woo Kim
Seamus Power
Joel Dahmen

This list actually looks really solid. There are the stars like Molinari, Leishman, and Fowler but there are also some wildcards like Armour, Gay, and Power with plenty of names in between.

When it comes to golfers looking for their first PGA TOUR win, guys like Tway, Lovemark, Molinari, Hossler, and An all look like strong candidates this week.

Best of luck everyone!

Below is a table with the full specialist data. Any fields with a 0 in them mean the sample size is not large enough. There is a minimum of 30 rounds to qualify for each angle.

The SG:TOTAL column is a baseline performance measure (since 2014). It is time-weighted so more recent results count for more than finishes from years ago.

HISTORY column is a weighted performance metric based on course history. I’ve made small adjustments for sample sizes but be sure to check on number of course rounds before blindly following this number.

FORM looks at the total strokes gained, adjusted to field strength, over the last 8 weeks (PGA TOUR and European Tour).

Josh Culp (futureoffantasy)

Josh didn’t own a set of golf clubs until after college but his love for the game now grows exponentially. He uses in-depth statistical analysis while trying to avoid the landmines that come with using traditional, outdated PGA stats. He can be found elsewhere writing for Rotoworld and Future of Fantasy. He can be found on twitter @futureoffantasy.
