Searching for a Specialist: RBC Canadian Open

Article Image

Welcome to a Canadian version of the specialist search.

Looking at data since 2014, we are going to find out who fits the course at Glen Abbey Golf Club.

Grading out results from last week, it’s easy to give it an ‘A’. We had just one specialist, Jordan Spieth, and we know how that turned out. Hopefully we can find the breadcrumbs that lead us to another winner this week.

Looking at this week’s course, we are going to look at Performance when Fairways are Hard-to-Hit, Driver-Heavy Courses, Bentgrass Greens, Par 72 Courses, and Performance in the Summer.

Also worth noting, I’ve been reviewing my Form metric and have switched the Form column at the bottom to an overall form number, rather than per round number. This doesn’t affect the specialist search in anyway, but it should provide a better view on volume of current form.

Here we go …

Hard-to-Hit Fairways

Over the last three editions hosted by Glen Abbey, the field has averaged less than 50 percent of fairways hit.

Let’s see who improves their game when fairways are tough to hit like this…

The Top 10 Hard Fairway Specialists are:

Bubba Watson (3.011 sg:hard fairways vs. 2.013 sg:total)
K.J. Choi (1.601 sg:hard fairways vs. 0.63 sg:total)
Jason Bohn (1.452 sg:hard fairways vs. 0.603 sg:total)
Harris English (1.833 sg:hard fairways vs. 1.269 sg:total)
Chez Reavie (1.597 sg:hard fairways vs. 1.073 sg:total)
Smylie Kaufman (1.226 sg:hard fairways vs. 0.712 sg:total)
Camilo Villegas (1.115 sg:hard fairways vs. 0.645 sg:total)
Vaughn Taylor (1.352 sg:hard fairways vs. 0.901 sg:total)
Ben Crane (0.902 sg:hard fairways vs. 0.459 sg:total)
Brett Stegmaier (0.549 sg:hard fairways vs. 0.112 sg:total)

We see two types of golfers thrive in these conditions. First, are the plodders that can still manage to hit fairways when the field is missing them (Choi, Chez, Crane, for example). Then we have the massive hitters (Bubba, Smylie) that are so used to missing fairways; they are just fine bombing it out there and playing from the rough, just 50 yards closer to the pin.

Driver-Heavy Courses

Since 2013, the field has averaged 298 yards off the tee at Glen Abbey Golf Club.

Part of that is due to some firm fairways some years, but overall golfers are able to pull driver plenty of times.

Back in 2015, Brian Harman said this about the course: “Yeah, I love this place. If you’re comfortable hitting driver, you can really take advantage of some of the shorter holes.”

The 10 Driver-Heavy Specialists:

Ryan Brehm (1.268 sg:driver-heavy vs. 0.428 sg:total)
Max Homa (0.11 sg:driver-heavy vs. -0.654 sg:total)
Shane Lowry (2.197 sg:driver-heavy vs. 1.553 sg:total)
Brian Gay (0.796 sg:driver-heavy vs. 0.204 sg:total)
Kevin Tway (0.78 sg:driver-heavy vs. 0.24 sg:total)
Ernie Els (0.974 sg:driver-heavy vs. 0.456 sg:total)
Boo Weekley (0.97 sg:driver-heavy vs. 0.468 sg:total)
Brandon Hagy (1.109 sg:driver-heavy vs. 0.622 sg:total)
Brett Stegmaier (0.585 sg:driver-heavy vs. 0.112 sg:total)
Smylie Kaufman (1.178 sg:driver-heavy vs. 0.712 sg:total)

Again, we see a lot of heavy hitters, as you’d expect. At the same time, Brian Gay and Boo Weekley can still sneak into the list by striping fairway after fairway, showing extreme confidence off the tee.

Since 2014, Shane Lowry has posted top-5 worthy performances in 4-of-13 starts on driver-heavy courses. That 31% ratio is more than double his baseline of top-5 worthy starts over that same time frame.

Par 72 Courses

Glen Abbey played as a par 71 a few times, but it’s been a par 72 for the last four editions it’s hosted this event.

When par 72s roll around, we know there should be plenty of birdies and eagles because of all the par 5s. That will definitely be the case this week as all four of the par 5s are reachable in two.

The Top 10 Par 72 Specialists:

Andrew Loupe (0.523 sg:par72 vs. -0.089 sg:total)
J.J. Spaun (1.245 sg:par72 vs. 0.703 sg:total)
Ryan Ruffels (0.281 sg:par72 vs. -0.208 sg:total)
Smylie Kaufman (1.11 sg:par72 vs. 0.712 sg:total)
Luke List (1.616 sg:par72 vs. 1.227 sg:total)
Brandon Hagy (0.971 sg:par72 vs. 0.622 sg:total)
J.T. Poston (1.059 sg:par72 vs. 0.723 sg:total)
Harold Varner III (1.074 sg:par72 vs. 0.741 sg:total)
Richy Werenski (0.547 sg:par72 vs. 0.215 sg:total)
Ryo Ishikawa (0.565 sg:par72 vs. 0.239 sg:total)

Like you’d expect, there is heavy artillery in the list above. These guys can crush the ball, so of course they are going to like course that let them unleash their power and manhandle the par 5s.

Toward the bottom we have someone like Billy Hurley III who has top-20 worthy performance in just one of his last 33 events played on par 72 layouts. His baseline is in the 10-to-15% range, so that is a massive dip. Not surprisingly, he ranks 120th in par 5 scoring, 183rd in going for the green, and 192nd in driving distance. Ideally, we want the opposite of that, this week in Canada.

Performance in the Summer

The temperatures are expected to be a bit cooler this week, but some golfers still like this time of year due to scheduling and what not.

Eric Axley said this a few years ago when he was contending here: “I don’t know if it’s the course or the time of the year. I generally play better in the summer, and I like this type of grass.”

The Top 10 Summer Specialists:

Kelly Kraft (1.206 sg:summer vs. 0.337 sg:total)
Johnson Wagner (1.205 sg:summer vs. 0.492 sg:total)
Andres Romero (0.989 sg:summer vs. 0.281 sg:total)
Ernie Els (1.069 sg:summer vs. 0.456 sg:total)
Ricky Barnes (1.029 sg:summer vs. 0.503 sg:total)
Robert Garrigus (1.009 sg:summer vs. 0.503 sg:total)
Geoff Ogilvy (0.912 sg:summer vs. 0.449 sg:total)
Gonzalo Fernandez-Castano (0.67 sg:summer vs. 0.218 sg:total)
Jim Furyk (2.486 sg:summer vs. 2.043 sg:total)
Brad Fritsch (0.481 sg:summer vs. 0.055 sg:total)

The first thing I notice is familiarity in hot climates (Kraft, Texas; Romero; Argentina; Barnes/Garrigus, Arizona; Ogily, Australia). These are place where when it gets hot, it gets really hot. That can be an advantage during the summer when the weather picks up.

Bentgrass Greens

I just talked about performance in the summer due to weather, but we also know that part of that summer performance is due to comfort level on bentgrass greens.

The PGA TOUR heads further north during the summer months because these courses aren’t very playable by PGA TOUR standards during the fall and early spring.

The Top 10 Bentgrass Specialists are:

Jonathan Randolph (0.753 sg:bentgrass vs. 0.011 sg:total)
Curtis Luck (1.094 sg:bentgrass vs. 0.562 sg:total)
Ernie Els (0.987 sg:bentgrass vs. 0.456 sg:total)
Miguel Angel Carballo (-0.102 sg:bentgrass vs. -0.575 sg:total)
Chad Campbell (1.482 sg:bentgrass vs. 1.012 sg:total)
Gonzalo Fernandez-Castano (0.678 sg:bentgrass vs. 0.218 sg:total)
Kevin Tway (0.679 sg:bentgrass vs. 0.24 sg:total)
Andres Romero (0.702 sg:bentgrass vs. 0.281 sg:total)
Robert Garrigus (0.905 sg:bentgrass vs. 0.503 sg:total)
Trey Mullinax (1.073 sg:bentgrass vs. 0.683 sg:total)

While I do make sure golfers have at least 25 rounds played to qualify, I would be a little cautious to crown golfers like Luck, Randolph, Tway, and Mullinax, as true bentgrass specialists. There sample sizes on bentgrass are all in the 25-to-50 round range, so they are still open to change. That being said, they are looking very strong on bentgrass early in their careers, so don’t ignore them, either.

There is a big group of golfers that have almost zero success on bentgrass. Villegas, Hubbard, Gonzales, Chalmers, Gay, Barber, Malnati, and Every have ZERO top-20 worthy performances since 2014 on bentgrass (203 combined starts). I would look elsewhere if you are trying to get cute with a sleeper.

Baseline Performance

In our search for a specialist we want to find a good course fit. At the same time, we don’t want to rely on a career-week just to find a top 30. Let’s remove any golfers that fall below the average baseline performance for this week’s field:

Ben Crane

Crane is a five-time winner on TOUR, but his baseline performance has declined dramatically since 2015. He is a great course fit this week, but he shouldn’t be heavily relied upon.

The Specialist

Matt Kuchar
Stewart Cink

Article Image

Our specialist this week is Matt Kuchar!

After a near-miss at Royal Birkdale, Mister Skechers himself could use a big bounce-back week. As a member of Team RBC, he is here for sponsors, but that hasn’t stopped him from contending in the past.

Over his last three starts at Glen Abbey he has posted finishes of T9, T7, and T2. Unless you think last week’s loss will sting too much, there is really no reason not to love Kuch in Canada.

The other specialist can’t be overlooked either, Stewart Cink.

Cink has gained strokes on approach in 12 straight events (ShotLink events only). That kind of iron play generally gets the job done anyway, but especially at Glen Abbey. He has pegged it here three times in the past, missing the cut last year but finishing T5 and T4 in his two visits before that.

The Anti-Specialists

The specialists above are positive in all seven angles, but which golfers are the opposite and show a poor course fit?

NONE

Nobody is negative in all six angles, but Bryce Molder looks to be the worst course fit this week. I’ll gladly say no thanks.

Best of luck everyone!

Below is a table with the full specialist data. Any fields with a 0 in them mean the sample size is not large enough. There is a minimum of 25 rounds to qualify for each angle.

The SG:Total column is a baseline performance measure (since 2014),

Form looks at the total strokes gained, adjusted to field strength, over the last 10 weeks (PGA & Euro).

Josh Culp (futureoffantasy)

Josh didn’t own a set of golf clubs until after college but his love for the game now grows exponentially. He uses in-depth statistical analysis while trying to avoid the landmines that come with using traditional, outdated PGA stats. He can be found elsewhere writing for Rotoworld and Future of Fantasy. He can be found on twitter @futureoffantasy.
