Searching for a Specialist: RBC Heritage

Article Image

After the first major of the 2016-17 season, it’s time to chill out and search for a specialist at this week’s RBC Heritage.

The course is pretty unique for PGA TOUR standards, so let’s see if we can try to find some relevant angles and then pounce on them.

The four angles that stand out above the rest this week are performance at Short Courses, Bermuda Greens, Hard-to-Hit Greens, and Less-than-Driver Courses.

Let’s go…

Short Courses

This week’s course is Harbour Town Golf Links which plays under 7,100 yards. That might be a similar yardage as you’d expect to find at your local Country Club but definitely on the short side for PGA TOUR standards.

Some of the shorter hitters can’t wait for these type of tracks to come around every year since it’s one of the few weeks out of the year where distance is not at a huge advantage.

The Top 10 Short Course Specialists are:

Brian Gay (0.528 sg:short vs. -0.122 sg:total)
Graeme McDowell (1.893 sg:short vs. 1.29 sg:total)
Zac Blair (1.178 sg:short vs. 0.667 sg:total)
Aaron Baddeley (1.165 sg:short vs. 0.689 sg:total)
Shawn Stefani (1.33 sg:short vs. 0.859 sg:total)
Bill Haas (2.139 sg:short vs. 1.705 sg:total)
Freddie Jacobson (1.24 sg:short vs. 0.806 sg:total)
Fabian Gomez (0.879 sg:short vs. 0.458 sg:total)
Cameron Smith (1.186 sg:short vs. 0.766 sg:total)
Anirban Lahiri (1.242 sg:short vs. 0.824 sg:total)

Some of these guys have a bit of pop in their bat but most of them are the plodding type that lean on their irons and/or short game.

G-Mac doesn’t have the huge sample size on short courses but he’s found top 25s in five of his eight starts on courses under 7,100 yards since 2014. It’s no surprise to see he’s won this event.

Bill Haas is right up there with him, collecting top 25s in eight of his last 12 starts on short courses.

Bermuda Greens

The greens at Harbour Town Golf Links are TifEagle Bermudagrass that typically run between 11 feet and 11.5 feet on the stimpmeter come tournament time.

That is a foot and a half or two slower than golfers saw last week at Augusta National, which were also bentgrass instead of bermuda.

Bermuda is more normal for this Southeastern portion of the country so golfers that grew up or went to college in the region are often at an advantage on bermuda greens.

The 10 Bermuda Specialists:

Matt Every (0.165 sg:bermuda vs. -0.469 sg:total)
Brett Stegmaier (0.701 sg:bermuda vs. 0.197 sg:total)
Luke Donald (1.538 sg:bermuda vs. 1.128 sg:total)
John Peterson (0.776 sg:bermuda vs. 0.368 sg:total)
Lucas Glover (1.151 sg:bermuda vs. 0.743 sg:total)
Ben Martin (1.106 sg:bermuda vs. 0.715 sg:total)
Fabian Gomez (0.829 sg:bermuda vs. 0.458 sg:total)
Peter Malnati (0.195 sg:bermuda vs. -0.165 sg:total)
Pat Perez (1.403 sg:bermuda vs. 1.064 sg:total)
Bryce Molder (1.001 sg:bermuda vs. 0.684 sg:total)

We have a few Florida Gators, a few Clemson Tigers, a Georgia Tech Yellow Jacket, and an LSU Tiger. Like I said, golfers that grew up in the region and/or went to school around here often know how to handle these surfaces.

Luke Donald didn’t attend college in the Southeast but he calls Orlando home so he’s well-accustomed to these grainy greens by now.

Who has the most top 25s on bermuda greens since 2014 (in the field)? Well, that would be Matt Kuchar with 23. He’s played in 32 events on bermuda over that time so that’s clearly a top-tier ratio of top 25s.

Hard-to-Hit Greens

We know the greens are bermudagrass, but how accessible are they?

Since 2010, only 57 percent of the field has hit greens in regulation on this course. A third of the holes have averaged less than 50% GIR.

That is tough to hit! They are some of the hardest to hit on TOUR and that makes sense when you realize the average square footage is also the smallest on TOUR.

The Top 10 Hard GIR Specialists:

Danny Willett (2.413 sg:hard GIR vs. 1.4 sg:total)
Matt Every (0.482 sg:hard GIR vs. -0.469 sg:total)
Bryson DeChambeau (1.696 sg:hard GIR vs. 0.82 sg:total)
Alex Cejka (1.539 sg:hard GIR vs. 0.721 sg:total)
Brett Stegmaier (0.924 sg:hard GIR vs. 0.197 sg:total)
Charley Hoffman (1.954 sg:hard GIR vs. 1.295 sg:total)
John Senden (1.591 sg:hard GIR vs. 1.018 sg:total)
Ken Duke (0.482 sg:hard GIR vs. -0.014 sg:total)
Jonas Blixt (1.009 sg:hard GIR vs. 0.544 sg:total)
Adam Hadwin (1.63 sg:hard GIR vs. 1.189 sg:total)

The golfers that consistently outperform expectations on tough GIR tracks are often the golfers with the standout short games. Being able to scramble to save pars is crucial when it’s almost a guarantee you’ll be missing six or more greens per round.

Anirban Lahiri draws some attention here but not for a good reason. He’s nearly a shot worse per round when greens are tough to hit. Perhaps that’s because his putter refuses to catch fire. It’s hard keep a round together when you can’t make the crucial six footers to save par. The last time Lahiri gained strokes over the field with his putter (for the week) was last May at the DEAN & DELUCA.

Less-than-Driver Courses

We already talked about how this week’s course falls into the category of short. Sometimes short courses will still demand you to pull driver, based on the layout of the holes. That’s not the case this week.

Since 2003 when ShotLink started tracking distance of all drives, all 14 holes (excluding par 3s) have averaged a driving distance of less than 280 yards.

That means for the shorter hitters they will be hitting drivers without the fear of getting outdrove by 25 yards. Meanwhile, the longer hitters will be grabbing 2- and 3-irons to keep it between the trees and likely landing in the same zones as the shorter hitters (using drivers).

Let’s see who excels when distance off the tee is muted a bit.

The 10 Less-than-Driver Specialists:

Wesley Bryan (2.047 sg:less-than-driver vs. 1.081 sg:total)
Sam Saunders (0.873 sg:less-than-driver vs. 0.137 sg:total)
Matt Every (0.094 sg:less-than-driver vs. -0.469 sg:total)
Kevin Na (2.233 sg:less-than-driver vs. 1.674 sg:total)
Morgan Hoffmann (1.09 sg:less-than-driver vs. 0.532 sg:total)
Bill Haas (2.253 sg:less-than-driver vs. 1.705 sg:total)
Ben Martin (1.257 sg:less-than-driver vs. 0.715 sg:total)
Whee Kim (0.92 sg:less-than-driver vs. 0.431 sg:total)
Blayne Barber (1.067 sg:less-than-driver vs. 0.582 sg:total)
Luke Donald (1.605 sg:less-than-driver vs. 1.128 sg:total)

It’s obviously early in his career but all four of Wes Bryan’s top 25s have come on less-than-driver courses. Add in his South Carolina ties and he makes for a stellar play this week.

On the flip side we have Ben Crane and Tyrone Van Aswegen. They have a combined ONE top 25 over their last 59 starts on less-than-driver courses. Neither of them rack up top 25s at a high rate most weeks, but seeing ZERO or ONE top 25 with such a large sample is concerning.

Baseline Performance

The goal of this search is to find some golfers with a good course fit. At the same time, we don’t want to rely on golfers that need the week of their lives just to crack the top 25.

We don’t need to completely eliminate these guys, but definitely isolate them to GPP consideration only since their baseline strokes gained is lower than the field average this week.

GPP-Only Options:

Bryce Molder
Blayne Barber
Matt Every

Molder is someone who has proven the ability to contend here at Harbour Town GL. He posted a T6 last year and T15 the year before. Prior to that he missed four straight cuts here. The course fit is there but his game is very streaky.

Blayne Barber is someone I don’t mind as a GPP sprinkle. He’s someone on my short list of breakout candidates and I fully expect his eventual breakout to come on a less-than-driver course.

The Specialists

Luke Donald
Bill Haas
Graham DeLaet
Jason Kokrak

Our specialist this week is Luke Donald!

Surprise, surprise, it’s the DONALD!, Luke, not Trump. If you’ve looked at course history for this course then it should be no surprise that Luke Donald is a snug course fit. His ball-striking is not in a good spot right now, but his short game is really the reason you’re looking at Donald in the first place.

Bill Haas is a South Carolina resident and makes the annual trip to Harbour Town GL. Surprisingly he’s found just two top 25s in 12 starts here. On paper, it looks like a much better fit.

Graham DeLaet finished T14 here last year but nothing better than T44 in four visits before that. His short game is a big question mark from week to week but the upside is YUGE.

Lastly, the big-hitting Jason Kokrak checks out positive in all four angles. He also had this to say last year en route to his T6 finish here, “I love the golf course, I put a 2-iron in the bag and just send it down the middle of the fairway.”

The Anti-Specialists

Looking for the opposite of our specialists, these golfers have negative numbers in all four angles!

Bud Cauley
Brandt Snedeker
Martin Laird
Stewart Cink

There are a few fade opportunities here. First we have Brandt Snedeker who is coming off a decent finish at the Masters and has won this event before. What has he done in his other 10 starts? Nothing else inside the top 15 with seven of those finishes being T47 or worse.

Second is Stewart Cink. He’s won this event TWICE! If you really love Cink this week, then I won’t recommend a fade because he’s playing some inspired golf right now. However, his course history grades out as just the 46th best in the field for me if we isolate it to just the last 10 years. I don’t think 43-year-old Cink is quite as good of a course fit here at Harbour Town GL but the numbers could be lying to me. I will be fading personally.

Best of luck everyone!

Below is a table with the full specialist data. Any fields with a 0 in them mean the sample size is not large enough. There is a minimum of 25 rounds to qualify for each angle.

Josh Culp (futureoffantasy)

Josh didn’t own a set of golf clubs until after college but his love for the game now grows exponentially. He uses in-depth statistical analysis while trying to avoid the landmines that come with using traditional, outdated PGA stats. He can be found elsewhere writing for Rotoworld and Future of Fantasy. He can be found on twitter @futureoffantasy.
