Searching for a Specialist: RBC Heritage

Heading to Harbour Town Golf Links this week, looking at course fit will matter more than ever. This track is one of the more unique courses on TOUR. It doesn’t let you overpower it.

Let’s search through the stats to see who might fit the course.

First let’s review last week. We had just one specialist (Marc Leishman) and he was in solo 2nd at the midpoint. He must not have liked the rain that hit Augusta National as he faded to solo 9th by week’s end.

For the RBC Heritage we will look at Performance on Bermuda Greens, Performance on Short Courses, Performance on Coastal Courses, Performance on Less-than-Driver Courses, and Performance in Windy Conditions.

Here we go …

Performance on Bermuda Greens

After bentgrass greens at Augusta National, we head back to bermuda this week.

Some golfers enjoy the task of reading the grain that comes with bermuda. Some like chipping/pitching on bermuda. Let’s see who increases their performance on bermuda…

The 10 BermudaSpecialists:

Colt Knost (1.235 sg:bermuda vs. 0.506 sg:total)
Si Woo Kim (1.408 sg:bermuda vs. 0.691 sg:total)
Kevin Chappell (2.229 sg:bermuda vs. 1.556 sg:total)
Ollie Schniederjans (1.927 sg:bermuda vs. 1.268 sg:total)
Francesco Molinari (2.455 sg:bermuda vs. 1.843 sg:total)
Lucas Glover (1.886 sg:bermuda vs. 1.314 sg:total)
Greg Chalmers (0.488 sg:bermuda vs. -0.051 sg:total)
Grayson Murray (1.237 sg:bermuda vs. 0.762 sg:total)
Brian Gay (1.185 sg:bermuda vs. 0.78 sg:total)
Luke List (1.937 sg:bermuda vs. 1.547 sg:total)

Si Woo Kim is a fine name to watch on bermuda. His two wins have come at the Wyndham and PLAYERS, both played on bermuda.

Chappell may be a surprising name here since his roots are in Cali.

Grayson Murray is an interesting deep sleeper this week. He crushes on bermuda but doesn’t seem like a great fit in other areas of the course setup.

Short Courses

Harbour Town Golf Links is right around 7,100 yards. Short by today’s standards.

Two of the three par 5s are on the short side. That helps this course play even shorter and eliminates the need for distance.

The Top 10 Short Specialists:

Ted Potter, Jr. (1.626 sg:short vs. 0.179 sg:total)
Anirban Lahiri (1.993 sg:short vs. 0.961 sg:total)
J.J. Spaun (1.699 sg:short vs. 0.87 sg:total)
Richy Werenski (1.069 sg:short vs. 0.332 sg:total)
Patton Kizzire (1.547 sg:short vs. 0.857 sg:total)
Lucas Glover (1.923 sg:short vs. 1.314 sg:total)
Davis Love III (0.537 sg:short vs. -0.006 sg:total)
Brice Garnett (1.046 sg:short vs. 0.519 sg:total)
Cameron Smith (1.703 sg:short vs. 1.206 sg:total)
Si Woo Kim (1.187 sg:short vs. 0.691 sg:total)

Talk about some monster splits for Potter and Lahiri! Potter picked up a recent win at the AT&T Pro-Am which certainly helps his numbers, considering his low baseline.

On the flip side, Kuchar, English, Schauffele, and An are more than half a stroke worse when it comes to short tracks. Seeing Kuchar on that list is very surprising but he’s definitely shown the ability to play this short course, in particular.

Coastal Courses

This week’s course is situated on Hilton Head Island.

It is exposed to the elements, being right by the water.

The Top 10 Coastal Specialists:

Patton Kizzire (1.906 sg:coastal vs. 0.857 sg:total)
J.J. Spaun (1.897 sg:coastal vs. 0.87 sg:total)
Kelly Kraft (1.267 sg:coastal vs. 0.384 sg:total)
Martin Flores (1.483 sg:coastal vs. 0.692 sg:total)
Ollie Schniederjans (2.027 sg:coastal vs. 1.268 sg:total)
Luke Donald (1.682 sg:coastal vs. 0.966 sg:total)
Brian Gay (1.448 sg:coastal vs. 0.78 sg:total)
Brice Garnett (1.167 sg:coastal vs. 0.519 sg:total)
Russell Knox (2.018 sg:coastal vs. 1.38 sg:total)
Kevin Streelman (1.811 sg:coastal vs. 1.213 sg:total)

Patton Kizzire has two wins this season…both on coastal courses.

At the very bottom is Charley Hoffman who appears to hate coastal courses based on the numbers alone. He is nearly a shot worse per round when the event is played right on the coast. Certainly something to consider before you jump back in on the Hole-in-One hero from last week.

Less-than-Driver Courses

This next angle pairs nicely with the Short Course angle (or a nice Chianti).

At the same time they don’t always overlap. Some golfers like shorter courses but only when those courses allow them to rip driver and take advantage of their length. We don’t want those golfers this week.

The Top 10 LT Driver Specialists:

Wesley Bryan (1.43 sg:less-than-driver vs. 0.651 sg:total)
Dominic Bozzelli (0.852 sg:less-than-driver vs. 0.256 sg:total)
J.J. Spaun (1.408 sg:less-than-driver vs. 0.87 sg:total)
Tyrrell Hatton (2.215 sg:less-than-driver vs. 1.804 sg:total)
Jason Dufner (1.862 sg:less-than-driver vs. 1.487 sg:total)
Graeme McDowell (1.409 sg:less-than-driver vs. 1.054 sg:total)
Ted Potter, Jr. (0.499 sg:less-than-driver vs. 0.179 sg:total)
Kevin Kisner (1.824 sg:less-than-driver vs. 1.507 sg:total)
Blayne Barber (0.899 sg:less-than-driver vs. 0.593 sg:total)
Martin Kaymer (1.698 sg:less-than-driver vs. 1.398 sg:total)

This list is full of exactly the type of golfers you’d expect.

Most of these golfers plod their way around the course and rely on iron play and/or short game to keep their head afloat.

Down at the very bottom we see the big-hitting Kevin Tway. Might be one to swerve this week, given the restrictions on the tee box. He has played here once, missing the cut after rounds of 70-80=150 (+8).

Performance in the Wind

Just like Short Courses pair nicely with Less-than-Driver Courses, the Wind and Coastal angles also mesh well.

Given the current forecast, winds might be a small factor before the cut but then they are set to really pick up over the weekend. If you just want to get 6/6 through the cut you may overlook this angle but if you want your golfers to finish the job this week, you probably shouldn’t ignore these guys.

The Top 10 Wind Specialists:

Kelly Kraft (1.136 sg:wind vs. 0.384 sg:total)
Si Woo Kim (1.257 sg:wind vs. 0.691 sg:total)
Colt Knost (1.019 sg:wind vs. 0.506 sg:total)
Whee Kim (1 sg:wind vs. 0.488 sg:total)
Luke Donald (1.473 sg:wind vs. 0.966 sg:total)
Billy Hurley III (1.051 sg:wind vs. 0.557 sg:total)
Kevin Tway (1.29 sg:wind vs. 0.81 sg:total)
Bill Haas (2.048 sg:wind vs. 1.61 sg:total)
Blayne Barber (1.002 sg:wind vs. 0.593 sg:total)
Stewart Cink (1.699 sg:wind vs. 1.308 sg:total)

We just talked about avoiding Kevin Tway but if he makes it through the cut line, he might become a decent Single Round or Weekend Option.

The main theme of this list is great iron play and/or great scrambling. That’s also the recipe for success here at Harbour Town.

Baseline Performance

We now have a long list of 10 golfers that are positive in all five angles.

However, we can filter out some of the golfers that we just can’t trust due to poor form or a poor baseline number.

These golfers should all like the course conditions this week but they should be reserved for GPPs only:

Blayne Barber
Si Woo Kim
Ryan Armour
Brian Gay
Russell Knox
Luke Donald
Martin Kaymer

The Specialists

William McGirt
Chris Kirk
Marc Leishman

The specialist this week is William McGirt!

william-mcgirt-550x330

How about that? Good ol’ Willy ‘Dirt’ McGirt. He has Carolina roots and also has top 10s in three of his last four trips to the RBC Heritage. Not too shabby.

Chris Kirk also grades out well but he hasn’t really popped here at Harbour Town… yet. With four top 15s already on the season, it wouldn’t be surprising if Captain Kirk found his way back into contention.

Lastly, we have Marc Leishman. Crazy how the Aussie could grade out well last week at Augusta and also this week at a seemingly different test of golf. He if 5-for-8 here with a T9 in 2013 being his only top 25. Just like Kirk, this is a matter of course fit, not course history.

Super Simple Specialist Ratings

The goal of this article is to isolate course fit, to see who should outperform their baseline.

However, anyone with common sense knows that baseline talent (and current form) can’t be ignored when handicapping golf.

Combining Baseline Strokes Gained with Current Form and Specialist Rating, we get a Top 20 ranking that looks like this:

Francesco Molinari
Webb Simpson
Charles Howell III
Marc Leishman
Kevin Chappell
Emiliano Grillo
Tyrrell Hatton
Brian Harman
Ryan Moore
William McGirt
Cameron Smith
Lucas Glover
Dustin Johnson
Chris Kirk
Ollie Schniederjans
Jason Dufner
Kevin Kisner
Luke List
Brandt Snedeker
Byeong Hun An

Last week saw Reed show up as #4 on this list. Number four this week is Marc Leishman who is a specialist for a second-straight week.

Best of luck everyone!

Below is a table with the full specialist data. Any fields with a 0 in them mean the sample size is not large enough. There is a minimum of 30 rounds to qualify for each angle.

The SG:TOTAL column is a baseline performance measure (since 2014). It is time-weighted so more recent results count for more than finishes from years ago.

HISTORY column is a weighted performance metric based on course history. I’ve made small adjustments for sample sizes but be sure to check on number of course rounds before blindly following this number.

FORM looks at the total strokes gained, adjusted to field strength, over the last 8 weeks (PGA TOUR and European Tour).

Josh Culp (futureoffantasy)

Josh didn’t own a set of golf clubs until after college but his love for the game now grows exponentially. He uses in-depth statistical analysis while trying to avoid the landmines that come with using traditional, outdated PGA stats. He can be found elsewhere writing for Rotoworld and Future of Fantasy. He can be found on twitter @futureoffantasy.
