Searching for a Specialist: RSM Classic

rotogrinders_user_22704

Welcome back to the final search for a specialist until the holiday break hits the PGA TOUR.

Last week our specialist was Webb Simpson and he found himself inside the top 5 after each of the first three rounds. A disappointing Sunday left him just inside the top 25, but a promising sign for Simpson supporters moving forward.

This week we return Stateside for The RSM Classic which has plenty of correlated angles to look at. The ones I’ve selected to spotlight are performance on Bermuda Greens, Less-than-Driver Courses, Weak Field Events, and Short Courses.

With heavy winds currently forecasted over the weekend, I’ve also included some stellar wind players at the bottom.

Here we go…

Bermuda Greens

This week’s tournament actually uses two courses during Thursday and Friday action, but both of them are bermudagrass greens.

Sometimes performing well on bermuda is about short-game skill, but sometimes it’s just about familiarity. If you spend a lot of your time growing up on bermuda courses then you’re likely going to be best-adapted for that surface your entire life.

The Top 10 Bermuda Specialists are:

Matt Every (0.599 sg:bermuda vs. -0.309 sg:total)
Steven Alker (0.62 sg:bermuda vs. 0.113 sg:total)
Luke Donald (1.523 sg:bermuda vs. 1.04 sg:total)
Bryce Molder (1.164 sg:bermuda vs. 0.693 sg:total)
Jason Gore (0.644 sg:bermuda vs. 0.191 sg:total)
Brett Stegmaier (0.857 sg:bermuda vs. 0.417 sg:total)
Ben Martin (1.142 sg:bermuda vs. 0.705 sg:total)
Lucas Glover (0.899 sg:bermuda vs. 0.51 sg:total)
Max Homa (-0.214 sg:bermuda vs. -0.582 sg:total)
Boo Weekley (0.788 sg:bermuda vs. 0.44 sg:total)

Most of this list would be considered great putters when looking at career putting stats. Then you get to guys like Lucas Glover and Boo Weekley and you realize it’s about familiarity for them. They don’t become Jason Day overnight, but when they get on bermuda they get closer to field average in putting while their ball-striking continues to shine.

If we’re looking to crown a King of Bermuda then Matt Kuchar may be that guy. Since 2014 he’s found top 25s in 21 of 29 starts on bermuda. That 21 is four more than anyone else in the field and that percentage (72%) is 15 percent higher than anyone in the field with more than three starts on bermuda. If you’re looking for a safety valve, he’s your guy.

On the flip side, Kyle Reifers is one to avoid. Over his last 28 starts on bermuda, he’s found just two top 25s. He did crack a T15 here in 2012 but the numbers are not in his favor for repeating that.

Less-than-Driver Courses

With both courses at Sea Island Golf Club checking in around 7,000 yards the golfers can keep the driver in the bag for most of the week.

With these style of courses it becomes less about performance off the tee and more about performance “fairway-to-cup,” if you will.

Golfers with elite iron play get a boost while golfers with elite short game also get a boost.

The 10 Less-than-Driver Specialists remaining:

Tyler Aldridge (1.09 sg:less-than-driver vs. 0.135 sg:total)
Matt Every (0.599 sg:less-than-driver vs. -0.309 sg:total)
Bill Haas (2.433 sg:less-than-driver vs. 1.591 sg:total)
Stuart Appleby (1.272 sg:less-than-driver vs. 0.484 sg:total)
Patton Kizzire (1.459 sg:less-than-driver vs. 0.806 sg:total)
Steven Alker (0.733 sg:less-than-driver vs. 0.113 sg:total)
Morgan Hoffmann (1.075 sg:less-than-driver vs. 0.465 sg:total)
Jamie Lovemark (1.323 sg:less-than-driver vs. 0.76 sg:total)
Whee Kim (0.857 sg:less-than-driver vs. 0.316 sg:total)
Ben Martin (1.217 sg:less-than-driver vs. 0.705 sg:total)

So far we have a trio of repeats including Matt Every, Steven Alker, and Ben Martin. Let’s not go all-in on these guys quite yet, but it is worth noting.

If Kuchar is the King of Bermuda than Bill Haas is the King of Less-than-Driver. Since 2014, he’s improved 0.842 strokes per round over his baseline when taking on less-than-driver courses. That includes top 25s in 13-of-19, a whopping 68%.

On the other side, Patrick Rodgers is an interesting case. Looking at the chart at the bottom you’ll see his performance on short courses is through the roof but declines when facing a less-than-driver course. Basically, he loves to take advantage of short layouts but he does so by using his massive drives. The upside is still very much alive for Rodgers, but he’s a bit handicapped off the tee this week.

GOLFERS REMAINING: 47

Weak Field Events

Some golfers raise their game to the level of competition while others like to pick on the little guys.

We’re looking for golfers that have fared well in these weaker fields on a consistent basis.

The Top 10 Weak Field specialists:

Chris Kirk (2.062 sg:weak vs. 1.272 sg:total)
Bill Haas (2.306 sg:weak vs. 1.591 sg:total)
Scott Brown (1.113 sg:weak vs. 0.614 sg:total) NOTE: Brown has withdrawn from event.
Nick Taylor (0.734 sg:weak vs. 0.311 sg:total)
Sam Saunders (0.296 sg:weak vs. -0.064 sg:total)
Patton Kizzire (1.151 sg:weak vs. 0.806 sg:total)
Brett Stegmaier (0.735 sg:weak vs. 0.417 sg:total)
Carl Pettersson (0.522 sg:weak vs. 0.204 sg:total)
Peter Malnati (0.032 sg:weak vs. -0.225 sg:total)
Tom Hoge (0.461 sg:weak vs. 0.216 sg:total)

As you can see, Chris Kirk and Bill Haas do A LOT of their damage against these weaker fields.

That’s also the case for Scott Brown who has finished inside the top 25 in 14 of his last 33 starts when the OWGR Strength of Field Rating is 250 or less. NOTE: Brown has withdrawn from event.

GOLFERS REMAINING: 23

Short Courses

We’ve narrowed down our list to less than 25, but we can thin it out even more.

The courses this week are both right around 7,000 yards which is really short for PGA TOUR standards.

Sometimes the bombers can tear through these short courses since they are clubbing down allowing them to increase their accuracy off the tee. At the same time, shorter hitters love when these events roll around because there is less real estate off the tee, so which allows them to level the playing field a bit on the tee box.

The 5 Short Course Specialists remaining:

Matt Every (0.273 sg:short vs. -0.309 sg:total)
Bill Haas (2.132 sg:short vs. 1.591 sg:total)
Peter Malnati (0.16 sg:short vs. -0.225 sg:total)
Chris Kirk (1.593 sg:short vs. 1.272 sg:total)
Kevin Kisner (1.397 sg:short vs. 1.114 sg:total)

As you’d expect, we see a mix of ball-striking and great putting on the list above.

We’ve already eliminated him from our search but Jason Kokrak is an interesting name to highlight here. He’s found top 25s in 10 of his last 19 starts on courses under 7,100 yards. Despite being one of the longer hitters on TOUR, he’s proven he’s not afraid to club down on the tee box.

GOLFERS REMAINING: 8

Baseline Performance

We’ve narrowed our list of potential specialists to just eight golfers, but this is still one more step to eliminate the complete long shots. By looking at performance over the past 10 weeks of stroke-play events, we can remove any golfers that aren’t gaining strokes on the field:

Peter Malnati
Mark Hubbard
Matt Every

While the course fit is there for these three golfers, their current play doesn’t instill any confidence. If you are making A LOT of lineups this week, you could throw these guys on one or two lineups each, but given the size of the field, I don’t think you need to take the risk.

GOLFERS REMAINING: 4

The Specialists

Bill Haas
Chris Kirk
Kevin Kisner
Kevin Chappell

bill-haas-300x200

Our specialist this week is Bill Haas!

Some weeks our search gives us a lot of values plays, while other keeps it’s the cream of the crop. This week definitely fits the latter bucket and might help sway your decisions in the top tier.

All four of our specialists have either won the RSM Classic or finishes runner-up. Course history is not an issue for any of our specialists this week.

Sometimes I like to provide this data free of opinions but if I’m throwing my two cents into the fold then Kirk and Chappell are the two specialists I would hand pick as top plays this week.

The only “problem” with Haas is that he’s often too reliant on finishing bonus. He rarely dazzles with birdie streaks and eagles so we’re banking on a very high finish when we pay nearly $10K for him.

If we’re getting nit-picky on Kisner, then his scrambling is sometimes not up to snuff. That means if he brings his B game in terms of approach play then he’ll have to grind out a top 30 instead of grinding out a top 15.

Overall this is a great list of specialists and potentially some of the highest baselines we’ve had in quite some time.

The Anti-Specialists

If we look for the exact opposite of our specialists, we can find some potential fades. These are golfers that show negative numbers in all five angles this week.

Hunter Mahan
Kyle Reifers
Sung Kang
Brandt Snedeker
Chris Stroud
Jon Curran
Robert Garrigus
Chad Campbell

The most notable name on the list this week is Brandt Snedeker. Much like Horschel last week, they come with a high baseline, but poor course fit.

Snedeker does his best work on bentgrass and poa annua and actually plays better on long courses because of his great long-iron play and great scrambling.

Sneds has a T32 and MC here in two tries. It’s always risky fading someone with 8 career wins but he won’t be making any of my rosters this week.

Windy Rounds

The Seaside Course is a links-style layout which leaves it pretty exposed to the wind. With heavy wind forecasted for the weekend, it might be a good idea to have a wind specialist in your corner as well.

Here are the top 15 in terms of strokes gained per round since 2014 when the wind is 14 mph or greater:

Matt Kuchar
Bill Haas
Kevin Chappell
Jim Furyk
Luke Donald
Brandt Snedeker
Chris Kirk
Billy Horschel
Harris English
Charles Howell III

Best of luck everyone!

Below is a table with the full specialist data. Any fields with a 0 in them mean the sample size is not large enough. There is a minimum of 25 rounds to qualify for each angle.

The SG:Total column is a baseline performance measure (since 2014),

Form is the strokes gained per round over the last 10 weeks (including European Tour) and all the other columns will show you their performance for that angle (per round) in comparison to the baseline strokes gained with positive numbers being a good thing.

Josh Culp (futureoffantasy)

Josh didn’t own a set of golf clubs until after college but his love for the game now grows exponentially. He uses in-depth statistical analysis while trying to avoid the landmines that come with using traditional, outdated PGA stats. He can be found elsewhere writing for Rotoworld and Future of Fantasy.
