Searching for a Specialist: RSM Classic

The last week of the Autumn Swing is here, so it’s time to get our last PGA TOUR fix before the limited-field Hero World Challenge at the beginning of December.

Last week our specialists performed very well. Kevin Streelman and Charles Howell III both finished inside the top 20. On top of that, Anirban Lahiri, Patton Kizzire, and Patrick Rodgers all graded out as superb fits, and they lived up to that fit.

Let’s try to keep it rolling as we look at The RSM Classic. We will breakdown performance when Fairways are Easy to Hit, Performance in Weak Field Events, Performance on Bermuda Greens, Performance on Less-than-Driver Courses, and Performance on Short Courses.

Here we go …

Easy-to-Hit Fairways

At first it may seem silly to look at performance when fairways are easy to hit, but it makes sense when you look closer.

When fairways are easier to hit that means that golfers will be hitting more approach shots from the fairways. That typically means more greens hit and fewer shots around the greens.

Sometimes that helps poor putters, sometimes it helps golfers that struggle around the greens.

The 10 Easy Fairway Specialists:

Trey Mullinax (1.4 sg:easy fairways vs. 0.592 sg:total)
Kelly Kraft (0.947 sg:easy fairways vs. 0.261 sg:total)
Carl Pettersson (0.729 sg:easy fairways vs. 0.089 sg:total)
Padraig Harrington (0.776 sg:easy fairways vs. 0.308 sg:total)
Scott Stallings (0.847 sg:easy fairways vs. 0.438 sg:total)
Robert Garrigus (0.909 sg:easy fairways vs. 0.549 sg:total)
Patrick Rodgers (1.052 sg:easy fairways vs. 0.712 sg:total)
Brandt Snedeker (2.023 sg:easy fairways vs. 1.689 sg:total)
Chad Campbell (1.297 sg:easy fairways vs. 0.965 sg:total)
Martin Flores (1.022 sg:easy fairways vs. 0.702 sg:total)

Who has gained the most strokes on easy fairway courses since 2014? That would be Brandt Snedeker, but he is returning from injury, making him a risky option.

At the bottom of the specialist table, we see Bubba Watson in this column. Other than Augusta National, he typically struggles when the rest of the field is hitting more shots from the fairways.

Weak Field Events

The OWGR field rating this week is just 138, very weak. The European Tour event this week is more than double that.

When fields are weak, we often see a lot of the same names pop up. Let’s see who some of those might be.

The Top 10 Weak Field Specialists are:

Abraham Ancer (0.452 sg:weak vs. -0.184 sg:total)
Bill Haas (2.226 sg:weak vs. 1.699 sg:total)
Patton Kizzire (1.221 sg:weak vs. 0.72 sg:total)
Si Woo Kim (1.158 sg:weak vs. 0.736 sg:total)
Davis Love III (0.525 sg:weak vs. 0.128 sg:total)
Nicholas Lindheim (0.091 sg:weak vs. -0.274 sg:total)
Scott Stallings (0.8 sg:weak vs. 0.438 sg:total)
Webb Simpson (1.89 sg:weak vs. 1.553 sg:total)
Ben Crane (0.835 sg:weak vs. 0.507 sg:total)
Brett Stegmaier (0.451 sg:weak vs. 0.17 sg:total)

Ancer popped in this regard last week and he performed up to those expectations. With a similarly weak field this week, it’s a good opportunity for Ancer to strike again.

Near the bottom, we have guys like Matt Kuchar and Brandt Snedeker. I think part of this is scheduling. Both of them are really nice guys. Sometimes that might lead them to enter a tournament or two each year due to the location and/or sponsor obligations. From a talent perspective, these guys could lap the field, but unfortunately, we don’t know how motivated they’ll be.

Bermuda Greens

Golfers that grew up in the South are typically more comfortable on bermuda greens.

That’s not always the case, so let’s look at the numbers to see who pops…

The Top 10 Bermuda Specialists:

Matt Every (0.226 sg:bermuda vs. -0.323 sg:total)
Ted Potter, Jr. (0.637 sg:bermuda vs. 0.126 sg:total)
J.J. Spaun (1.292 sg:bermuda vs. 0.845 sg:total)
Jason Gore (0.722 sg:bermuda vs. 0.278 sg:total)
Luke Donald (1.526 sg:bermuda vs. 1.136 sg:total)
Si Woo Kim (1.115 sg:bermuda vs. 0.736 sg:total)
Steve Wheatcroft (0.667 sg:bermuda vs. 0.321 sg:total)
Ollie Schniederjans (1.407 sg:bermuda vs. 1.085 sg:total)
Fabian Gomez (0.807 sg:bermuda vs. 0.489 sg:total)
Ben Martin (1.108 sg:bermuda vs. 0.825 sg:total)

Ollie’s best three finishes on TOUR have come at the Wyndham, Heritage, and RSM. All three have bermuda greens.

Same goes for Si Woo Kim who has a WIN at the Wyndham, a WIN at THE PLAYERS, and a runner-up finish at the Barbasol. All bermuda.

Kevin Kisner doesn’t show up here, but he has an interesting split. His numbers are very consistent on bentgrass, but he can really pop on bermuda.

Less-than-Driver Courses

The field averages just 274 yards off the tee at the Seaside Course. That means that golfers are often clubbing down.

This doesn’t eliminate big hitters, but it certainly limits their advantage on the tee box.

The Top 10 LT Driver Specialists:

Sam Saunders (0.936 sg:less-than-driver vs. 0.302 sg:total)
J.J. Spaun (1.449 sg:less-than-driver vs. 0.845 sg:total)
Abraham Ancer (0.365 sg:less-than-driver vs. -0.184 sg:total)
Morgan Hoffmann (1.134 sg:less-than-driver vs. 0.661 sg:total)
Stuart Appleby (0.842 sg:less-than-driver vs. 0.391 sg:total)
Luke Donald (1.573 sg:less-than-driver vs. 1.136 sg:total)
Graeme McDowell (1.693 sg:less-than-driver vs. 1.277 sg:total)
Patton Kizzire (1.125 sg:less-than-driver vs. 0.72 sg:total)
Kevin Kisner (1.782 sg:less-than-driver vs. 1.402 sg:total)
Tommy Gainey (-0.111 sg:less-than-driver vs. -0.489 sg:total)

Most of these names pass the eye test as they are shorter hitters or can get really wild with the driver. Forcing them to hit fewer drivers allows them to club down and just focus on keeping it in the fairway.

It’s not surprising to see Bubba Watson near the bottom in this category. Take his biggest weapon away, and the rest of his game has to be clicking on all cylinders.

Short Courses

Looking at a similar angle, we can see who performs better when courses are under 7,100 yards.

The Top 10 Short Course Specialists:

Patrick Rodgers (1.611 sg:short vs. 0.712 sg:total)
Patton Kizzire (1.51 sg:short vs. 0.72 sg:total)
Kelly Kraft (0.915 sg:short vs. 0.261 sg:total)
C.T. Pan (1.316 sg:short vs. 0.668 sg:total)
Graeme McDowell (1.908 sg:short vs. 1.277 sg:total)
Si Woo Kim (1.291 sg:short vs. 0.736 sg:total)
Luke Donald (1.678 sg:short vs. 1.136 sg:total)
Brice Garnett (0.741 sg:short vs. 0.219 sg:total)
Fabian Gomez (1.009 sg:short vs. 0.489 sg:total)
Kevin Streelman (1.478 sg:short vs. 0.99 sg:total)

A majority of these name are what we would consider ‘plodders’, but there are some big guys like Patrick Rodgers, Patton Kizzire, and Kelly Kraft. When courses are shorter, they can use their length advantage when it’s allowed but also club down and manage the course when it’s required.

As for the plodders, they are able to use their irons and short game skills to shine.

Baseline Performance

When searching for a specialist we try to narrow down our list to golfers with a positive rating in ALL five categories. There are two names that qualify this week, but one of them has a negative number in the form department.

For that reason, Michael Kim is a GPP-Only Specialist.

The Specialist

Article Image

The specialist this week is Kevin Kisner.

The Georgia Bulldog is very comfortable in this area and he’s also a great course fit. From a 4-round point of view, Kisner is more than a shot better on short courses and on less-than-driver courses.

As for his actual results here? He is 4-for-6 with four top 30s, including a T4 and a WIN.

Is there any risk with Kisner this week? Sure there is. Kiz hasn’t pegged it since his stellar week at the Presidents Cup. Of course, he hasn’t been sitting around eating ho-hos and playing Call of Duty. There may be a bit of rust to shake out, but he still provides a ton of upside this week.

Kisner is the only specialist this week, but you can also use the table below to find other good fits. Last week, for example, Patton Kizzire and Brian Gay were both positive in 4-of-5 angles but didn’t have a big enough sample in the fifth. Kizzire obviously went on to win and Gay finished 25th. This week J.J. Spaun, Bronson Burgoon, J.T. Poston, and Ryan Blaum are positive in 3-of-5 with small samples in the other two while Ollie Schniederjans and Ryan Armour are positive in 4-of-5 with a small sample in the fifth category.

Anti-Specialists

Hunter Mahan
Bud Cauley
Heath Slocum
Ernie Els
Sung Kang
Matt Kuchar
Billy Hurley III
Stewart Cink

That is a big list of NON-BOX-CHECKERS. The most notable is clearly Matt Kuchar who is a resident of the area and could be considered the class of the field. Despite his local knowledge and gap in talent, he has finished T20 or worse in 5-of-6 appearances here. If you are playing more than 5 lineups, I wouldn’t advise a complete fade, but he won’t be someone that finds too many of my lineups.

Stewart Cink is another interesting name. Because of his age and his recent inability to find top 10s, many gamers associate him as a short-hitting plodder. However, he is not that accurate and still hits it out there a long ways. He finished T10 here last year, but I wouldn’t bank on a repeat this week.

Super Simple Specialist Ratings

The goal of this article is to isolate course fit, to see who should outperform their baseline.

However, anyone with common sense knows that baseline talent (and current form) can’t be ignored when handicapping golf.

Combining Baseline Strokes Gained with Current Form and Specialist Rating, we get a Top 20 ranking that looks like this:

Graeme Mcdowell
Kevin Kisner
Patton Kizzire
Ollie Schniederjans
Webb Simpson
Shawn Stefani
Luke Donald
J.J. Spaun
Scott Brown
Bill Haas
Charles Howell III
Jason Kokrak
Chris Kirk
Kevin Streelman
Jamie Lovemark
Patrick Rodgers
Brian Stuard
Byeong Hun An
J.T. Poston
Ryan Armour

G-MAC!! McDowell has the perfect blend of long-term talent, recent form, and course fit this week. He may get overlooked this week, but we should definitely give him a strong look in GPPs.

Best of luck everyone!

Below is a table with the full specialist data. Any fields with a 0 in them mean the sample size is not large enough. There is a minimum of 30 rounds to qualify for each angle.

The SG:Total column is a baseline performance measure (since 2014).

Form looks at the total strokes gained, adjusted to field strength, over the last 8 weeks (PGA, Web, and Euro).

Josh Culp (futureoffantasy)

Josh didn’t own a set of golf clubs until after college but his love for the game now grows exponentially. He uses in-depth statistical analysis while trying to avoid the landmines that come with using traditional, outdated PGA stats. He can be found elsewhere writing for Rotoworld and Future of Fantasy. He can be found on twitter @futureoffantasy.
