Searching for a Specialist: Safeway Open

The PGA TOUR is back in action for a new season. If you blinked, you may have missed the off-season. For anyone reading this article for the first time, I will look at past performance based on course/event set up and compare that to each golfer’s baseline performance. The goal is to look for golfers that grade out well in every angle to show a good course fit. I’m also not naive enough to think that a golfer HAS to be a true specialist to be a good course fit. That is why I include the full rankings in a table format at the bottom and I also include a top-20 list that looks at baseline performance + current form but also accounts for course fit. This week at Silverado Resort and Spa we are going to look at Performance on Poa Annua Greens, Performance on Par 72 Courses, Performance in the Fall, Performance in California, and Performance on Easy-to-Hit Greens.

Here we go …

Poa Greens

The greens at Silverado Resort and Spa are a mix of bentgrass and poa annua. The poa is what the golfers notice, so that is what I categorize as. Poa is a type of grass that can really get in the head of some golfers, so I am very interested to see the big outliers in this category…

The Top 10 Poa Annua Specialists are:

Sangmoon Bae (2.429 sg:poa vs. 0.839 sg:total)
Scott Stallings (1.388 sg:poa vs. 0.407 sg:total)
Martin Laird (2.034 sg:poa vs. 1.097 sg:total)
K.J. Choi (1.536 sg:poa vs. 0.66 sg:total)
Vaughn Taylor (1.775 sg:poa vs. 0.924 sg:total)
Derek Fathauer (1.162 sg:poa vs. 0.362 sg:total)
Sung Kang (1.856 sg:poa vs. 1.065 sg:total)
Kelly Kraft (0.985 sg:poa vs. 0.231 sg:total)
D.A. Points (0.579 sg:poa vs. 0.028 sg:total)
Harris English (1.792 sg:poa vs. 1.273 sg:total)

Sangmoon Bae is making his first start on the PGA TOUR since 2015, as he’s been serving his obligatory time in the South Korean army. Historically, he’s crushed on poa annua greens, but I wouldn’t expect his game to be in tip-top shape right out of the gate. If you look at the bottom of this poa annua list, we see A LOT of guys that have lived their whole life in the Southeast. That is not a coincidence.

Par 72 Courses

This week’s course has a four-pack of par 5s, and all of them are reachable in two, with a good driver. Let’s see who prefers the courses with lots of par 5s to feast on…

The 10 Par 72 Specialists:

Cody Gribble (1.402 sg:par72 vs. 0.446 sg:total)
John Daly (-0.534 sg:par72 vs. -1.214 sg:total)
Andrew Loupe (0.513 sg:par72 vs. -0.076 sg:total)
Nicholas Lindheim (0.173 sg:par72 vs. -0.375 sg:total)
Brandon Hagy (1.155 sg:par72 vs. 0.679 sg:total)
J.J. Spaun (1.169 sg:par72 vs. 0.708 sg:total)
Smylie Kaufman (1.159 sg:par72 vs. 0.746 sg:total)
Martin Piller (0.402 sg:par72 vs. 0.024 sg:total)
Luke List (1.62 sg:par72 vs. 1.275 sg:total)
Patton Kizzire (0.885 sg:par72 vs. 0.541 sg:total)

No surprise that we see loads of big hitters on this list. Unless they waste a tee ball, these par 5s are auto-birdies for the big hitters. It’s not all bombers, though. Looking at golfers who have posted the most top-5 worthy finishes on par 72s (since 2014), Kevin Na tops the list. He is a great long-iron player and his short game is brilliant.

Performance in the Fall

Grouping performance by seasons can be very beneficial. Some golfers put it on cruise control in the fall and treat it as a vacation. Others use this time to pad their FedExCup totals before some of the big names start to litter the fields.

The Top 10 Fall Specialists are:

Fabian Gomez (1.491 sg:fall vs. 0.5 sg:total)
Patton Kizzire (1.362 sg:fall vs. 0.541 sg:total)
Scott Piercy (1.752 sg:fall vs. 1.017 sg:total)
Derek Fathauer (1.03 sg:fall vs. 0.362 sg:total)
Emiliano Grillo (2.125 sg:fall vs. 1.462 sg:total)
Brice Garnett (0.812 sg:fall vs. 0.155 sg:total)
Brett Stegmaier (0.745 sg:fall vs. 0.095 sg:total)
Alex Cejka (1.3 sg:fall vs. 0.679 sg:total)
Johnson Wagner (1.117 sg:fall vs. 0.535 sg:total)
Ryan Moore (2.038 sg:fall vs. 1.52 sg:total)

Who has the most top-20 worthy performances in the Fall, since 2014? That would be Scott Piercy followed closely by Kevin Na and Chris Kirk. I would probably holster Kirk until we get off of poa annua greens, which is why it’s important to look at ALL of these angles, and not just pick and choose randomly which angles to weight more heavily.

On the flip side, here is a list of golfers that have played in 10+ Fall Events, and haven’t recorded a single top-20 worthy finish (since 2014): Ricky Barnes, Scott Stallings, Brian Stuard, Colt Knost, Tom Hoge, Steve Wheatcroft, D.A. Points, Martin Flores, Rory Sabbatini, Jason Gore, Stuart Appleby, Sam Saunders, Chesson Hadley, Robert Garrigus, Ben Crane, and Jonathan Randolph. I’m not suggesting they will all finish outside the top 20 this week, but the odds are not in their favor, as a collective.

California Lovin’

This angle ties in closely with the poa annua category. However, there are poa annua greens played on the East coast, as well, so this will help exclude those tournaments. We want top performers on poa and also top performers when it comes to playing in California.

The Top 10 California Specialists:

Sangmoon Bae (1.944 sg:cali vs. 0.839 sg:total)
K.J. Choi (1.743 sg:cali vs. 0.66 sg:total)
Vaughn Taylor (1.964 sg:cali vs. 0.924 sg:total)
Scott Stallings (1.383 sg:cali vs. 0.407 sg:total)
Martin Laird (2.002 sg:cali vs. 1.097 sg:total)
Patton Kizzire (1.408 sg:cali vs. 0.541 sg:total)
Matt Jones (1.568 sg:cali vs. 0.938 sg:total)
Harris English (1.894 sg:cali vs. 1.273 sg:total)
Kelly Kraft (0.761 sg:cali vs. 0.231 sg:total)
Jon Curran (1.167 sg:cali vs. 0.643 sg:total)

They must train their golfers on poa annua greens in South Korea because they appear as 1-2 on the list above. Sung Kang and Whee Kim are also on the positive side of the spectrum when pegging it in Cali. There are some HUGE splits at the bottom of the list here. Typically, anything less than half-a-stroke per round is considered a big split. Ben Martin and Sam Saunders are both more than 1 shot worse per round when teeing it up in Cali, compared to their baseline performance on TOUR.

Easy-to-Hit Greens

This week we head to a resort course which typically means an easy setup. The PGA TOUR staff does a good job to toughen the course, compared to what the public will see, but there is only so much you can do. That means we should be set up for a relatively easy tee-to-green test this week…

The Top 10 Easy GIR Specialists:

John Daly (-0.599 sg:easy GIR vs. -1.214 sg:total)
Johnson Wagner (1.131 sg:easy GIR vs. 0.535 sg:total)
Scott Piercy (1.607 sg:easy GIR vs. 1.017 sg:total)
Patton Kizzire (1.062 sg:easy GIR vs. 0.541 sg:total)
Mackenzie Hughes (1.424 sg:easy GIR vs. 0.919 sg:total)
Bobby Wyatt (-0.457 sg:easy GIR vs. -0.939 sg:total)
Rick Lamb (0.087 sg:easy GIR vs. -0.373 sg:total)
Webb Simpson (1.944 sg:easy GIR vs. 1.529 sg:total)
Cody Gribble (0.812 sg:easy GIR vs. 0.446 sg:total)
Zach Johnson (2.05 sg:easy GIR vs. 1.692 sg:total)

Really a grab bag of golfers here. The closest thing to a link is the ability to keep it between the pipes. Most of the top golfers on this Easy GIR list are plodders that hit fairways, allowing them to attack the easy-to-hit greens.

Baseline Performance

If we narrow our list down to golfers that are positive in ALL FIVE angles, we have three remaining. There is one golfer that doesn’t meet the criteria for baseline performance. That would be Derek Fathauer, making him a GPP-ONLY SPECIALIST. Fathauer is a good course fit, but his form is just too low to trust as a core piece.

The Specialist

Brendan Steele
Jamie Lovemark

The specialist this week is Brendan Steele.

This isn’t some super-secret dark horse since he is the defending champion after all. He was also the 54-hole leader the year before his win. The course obviously suits his eye, let’s just hope that he doesn’t feel like he’s “conquered” Silverado now that he’s won. As for our second specialist, we have Jamie Lovemark. He is a Cali native and USC alum. That should help him handle the poa annua greens on tap this week.

The Anti-Specialists

The specialists above are positive in all five angles, but which golfers are the opposite and show a poor course fit?

Jason Gore
David Hearn
Chad Campbell
Ricky Barnes
Tom Hoge

I generally think of Canadians faring well in California, but that isn’t the case for Hearn. He is more than 3/4 of a shot worse per round, compared to his baseline. Chad Campbell is someone who rarely thrives with the putter but seems to be at his worse on poa annua greens. Not shockingly, he lost over 5 strokes putting when he played here last year.

h3/ Super Simple Specialist Ratings

The goal of this article is to isolate course fit, to see who should outperform their baseline. However, anyone with common sense knows that baseline talent (and current form) can’t be ignored when handicapping golf. Combining Baseline Strokes Gained with Current Form and Specialist Rating, we get a Top 20 ranking that looks like this:

Kevin Na
Keegan Bradley
Martin Laird
Luke List
Keith Mitchell
Emiliano Grillo
Tony Finau
Bill Haas
Ryan Moore
Chez Reavie
Harold Varner III
Phil Mickelson
Zach Johnson
Lucas Glover
Jamie Lovemark
Mackenzie Hughes
Vaughn Taylor
Brendan Steele
Sung Kang
Harris English

Our specialist Steele checks in surprisingly low on this view. Diving deeper we can see that’s due to a poor end to the season (bad form rating). Hopefully, the time off has helped him recharge the batteries.

Best of luck everyone!

Below is a table with the full specialist data. Any fields with a 0 in them mean the sample size is not large enough. There is a minimum of 25 rounds to qualify for each angle. The SG:Total column is a baseline performance measure (since 2014). Form looks at the total strokes gained, adjusted to field strength, over the last 8 weeks (PGA, Web, and Euro).

Josh Culp (futureoffantasy)

Josh didn’t own a set of golf clubs until after college but his love for the game now grows exponentially. He uses in-depth statistical analysis while trying to avoid the landmines that come with using traditional, outdated PGA stats. He can be found elsewhere writing for Rotoworld and Future of Fantasy. He can be found on twitter @futureoffantasy.
