Searching for a Specialist: Shell Houston Open

Article Image

Welcome back for another week of specialist searching where we narrow down the field in order to find a good course fit.

Starting off with the weekly recap, Scott Brown was right in the thick of things as our specialist in Puerto Rico, but the other three specialists really fell short of expectations. Overall, a forgettable week down in the Caribbean.

One thing worth mentioning is the wind never arrived. Listening to the golfer interviews, most of them were just as surprised to be playing Puerto Rico with no wind but that’s just how the weather works sometimes.

Moving along to this week, we have the Shell Houston Open in Humble, Texas.

The key angles are Long Courses, Bentgrass Greens, Windy Rounds, and Par 72 Performance.

Here we go …

Long Courses

The Golf Club of Houston stretches out past 7,400 yards and has four par 4s over 450 yards. Having some length, or being able to play a lengthy course, will be very beneficial this week.

The Top 10 Long Course Specialists are:

Ernie Els (1.078 sg:long vs. 0.504 sg:total)
Jimmy Walker (2.187 sg:long vs. 1.616 sg:total)
Charley Hoffman (1.852 sg:long vs. 1.287 sg:total)
Chad Collins (0.749 sg:long vs. 0.234 sg:total)
Kyle Reifers (1.201 sg:long vs. 0.691 sg:total)
Bernd Wiesberger (1.532 sg:long vs. 1.068 sg:total)
Martin Flores (1.147 sg:long vs. 0.698 sg:total)
Sam Saunders (0.519 sg:long vs. 0.089 sg:total)
Matt Every (-0.06 sg:long vs. -0.481 sg:total)
Jamie Lovemark (1.286 sg:long vs. 0.899 sg:total)

A few of these make perfect sense (Walker, Hoffman, Bernd, Flores, Lovemark) since they have a lot of length off the tee.

Others like Sam Saunders and Matt Every crack this list by playing well on a few particular courses that stretch out in length but force you to club down off the tee. This week isn’t one of those courses so I wouldn’t bank on them showing up near the top of the leaderboard.

On the flip side, Jason Dufner is nearly a shot worse per round when a course plays over 7,400 yards. This makes a lot of sense because he’s not the longest off the tee but he can really get dialed in with his wedges and mid-irons. The longer the course is, the less that will be an advantage, typically.

Bentgrass Greens

The heart of this week’s greens are bermuda but the tournament officials heavily overseed them with bentgrass/ryegrass ahead of this event to make them play closer to what the golfers will see next week at Augusta National (bentgrass).

Looking at past performances here, bentgrass grades out way better than bermuda in terms of predicting future outcomes at this course, so that is what we will use this week.

The 10 Bentgrass Specialists:

Ernie Els (1.161 sg:bentgrass vs. 0.504 sg:total)
Steve Marino (0.736 sg:bentgrass vs. 0.11 sg:total)
Chris Stroud (1.251 sg:bentgrass vs. 0.726 sg:total)
Johnson Wagner (0.995 sg:bentgrass vs. 0.525 sg:total)
Chad Campbell (1.335 sg:bentgrass vs. 0.91 sg:total)
Geoff Ogilvy (0.797 sg:bentgrass vs. 0.39 sg:total)
Steven Bowditch (-0.035 sg:bentgrass vs. -0.436 sg:total)
Kyle Reifers (1.057 sg:bentgrass vs. 0.691 sg:total)
Robert Garrigus (0.802 sg:bentgrass vs. 0.448 sg:total)
Hunter Mahan (0.991 sg:bentgrass vs. 0.659 sg:total)

There are plenty of Texas connections on the list above, but more importantly, not many Florida ties like we saw recently when specialist searching during the Florida Swing.

Who has the most top 25s on bentgrass since 2014 (in this field)? That would be Jordan Spieth easily, with 28 top 25s in 39 starts on bentgrass. Once again he has the Texas ties, so that should not be overlooked this week.

My classic bentgrass fade is also in the field. That would be Lucas Glover who owns just one top 25 over his last 23 starts on bentgrass greens. I know he’s been playing pretty well this season, but this is an easy spot to fade, in my opinion.

Windy Rounds

I used this angle last week because the Puerto Rico Open was historically the windiest event on the schedule. It turned out to be as calm as it comes, and instead the golfers got on-and-off showers throughout the week.

This week I’m going back to the well since we have some wind in the forecast, especially over the weekend. On top of that, the wind plays a bigger role here even when it’s not blowing so hard. At least according to Scott Piercy, who put it this way, “The wind here is so heavy since we’re at sea level. If it’s blowing 10 miles an hour, it plays probably close to 20 yards worth of distance.”

The Top 10 Wind Specialists:

Alex Cejka (1.581 sg:wind vs. 0.715 sg:total)
J.B. Holmes (2.106 sg:wind vs. 1.486 sg:total)
Kelly Kraft (0.92 sg:wind vs. 0.334 sg:total)
Cameron Tringale (1.495 sg:wind vs. 0.953 sg:total)
Nick Taylor (0.903 sg:wind vs. 0.42 sg:total)
Daniel Berger (2 sg:wind vs. 1.525 sg:total)
Ricky Barnes (0.899 sg:wind vs. 0.432 sg:total)
Whee Kim (0.903 sg:wind vs. 0.444 sg:total)
Robert Allenby (-0.084 sg:wind vs. -0.536 sg:total)
Ben Martin (1.163 sg:wind vs. 0.722 sg:total)

J.B. Holmes has the ability to go wild in the wind. He did it at Doral a few years back. For those that don’t remember it was similar to Snedeker’s round at the Farmers last year. Holmes shot a 10-under 62 that round when most of the field was struggling to break par.

When looking at ability to lap the field like that we can look at the number of times a golfer beats the field average by 2 or more strokes in a round. Matt Kuchar and Jordan Spieth have the most in the field of these type of BOOM rounds when playing in winds over 14 mph, although Spieth has done it at a slightly better ratio.

Michael Kim has a low number in this category but he’s one I’m watching closely since he moved to Houston a few years back. If he’s training in his off weeks back home, he may become more and more accustomed to windy conditions. Oh, it also might help that this week’s event is in Houston.

Par 72 Courses

GC of Houston is a par 72 layout which means four par 5s on the docket.

You could look at par 5 scoring but the subtraction of par 4s is also notable so particular golfers can lose/gain an edge based on the ratios of holes that suit their game.

One catch-all for this is to look at overall performance on par 72s.

The 10 Par 72 Specialists:

Patton Kizzire (1.197 sg:par72 vs. 0.694 sg:total)
Andrew Loupe (0.435 sg:par72 vs. -0.042 sg:total)
Bill Lunde (0.08 sg:par72 vs. -0.278 sg:total)
Smylie Kaufman (0.945 sg:par72 vs. 0.59 sg:total)
Ryo Ishikawa (0.729 sg:par72 vs. 0.383 sg:total)
Roberto Castro (0.891 sg:par72 vs. 0.574 sg:total)
Vaughn Taylor (1.199 sg:par72 vs. 0.882 sg:total)
Bernd Wiesberger (1.362 sg:par72 vs. 1.068 sg:total)
Luke List (1.568 sg:par72 vs. 1.278 sg:total)
Jonas Blixt (0.878 sg:par72 vs. 0.589 sg:total)

As you can tell, there are quite a few big hitters on the list above.

On the opposite side of the spectrum we have guys like Luke Donald and Sam Saunders who just can’t take advantage of the par 5s so they need help from the weather or need to play air-tight for the rest of the round.

Baseline Performance

The goal of this search is to find some golfers with a good course fit. At the same time, we don’t want to rely on golfers that need the week of their lives just to crack the top 25.

We don’t need to completely eliminate these guys, but definitely isolate them to GPP consideration only since their baseline strokes gained is lower than the field average this week.

GPP-Only Options:

Chris Stroud
Kyle Reifers
Hunter Mahan
Smylie Kaufman
Johnson Wagner
Ryo Ishikawa
Mark Hubbard

Stroud was the closest to passing the baseline test, and he has local ties to Houston as he went to Lamar University just over an hour away. That would make him the most lively option here.

The Specialists

Our specialist this week is J.B. Holmes!

John Bradley Holmes won this event the last time he played (2015). He withdrew before the start of last year’s edition with a shoulder injury but it’s clear he likes the layout given the win and also a runner-up finish in 2009.

The rest of the specialists have at least one top 25 on their Houston Open resume, except for Danny Lee. Luckily, he is showing signs of form recently, looks to be a great course fit, and also lives in Irving, Texas. That makes him a very appealing, and likely lesser-owned option this week.

The Anti-Specialists

Looking for the opposite of our specialists, these golfers have negative numbers in all four angles!

Jason Dufner
Fabian Gomez
Sung Kang
James Hahn
Morgan Hoffmann
Seung-Yul Noh
Tom Hoge

Sung Kang calls Texas home now, so he would be the only guy I’d take a shot on if I were forced to pick one. I’m not going to lose sleep over fading any of these guys, though.

Best of luck everyone!

Below is a table with the full specialist data. Any fields with a 0 in them mean the sample size is not large enough. There is a minimum of 25 rounds to qualify for each angle.

The SG:Total column is a baseline performance measure (since 2014),

Josh Culp (futureoffantasy)

Josh didn’t own a set of golf clubs until after college but his love for the game now grows exponentially. He uses in-depth statistical analysis while trying to avoid the landmines that come with using traditional, outdated PGA stats. He can be found elsewhere writing for Rotoworld and Future of Fantasy.
