Searching for a Specialist: Shriners Open

rotogrinders_user_22704

Welcome back for another specialist search as dive deep into the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open.

No sugarcoating, last week was kind of a train wreck in terms of specialist performance. Patrick Reed finished 60th but the worst part was Henrik Stenson (anti-specialist) finishing runner-up. I am definitely going to earmark the HSBC to make sure I take a different approach next year.

Luckily, we return to the States this week which bring in plenty of specialist angles with plenty of sample size.

In fact, this week I’ve found five key boxes I want our specialists to check.

The first is performance against Weak Fields, then we’ll look at Bentgrass Greens and Easy-to-Hit Greens. After that, we’ll also look at Driver-Heavy stats and performance on Easy Courses.

Here we go…

Weak Field Events

The OWGR strength of field rating this week currently checks in at 185. Looking at stats in all events with a SoF rating of 250 or less, we can find Weak Field Specialists.

Some golfers struggle mentally when they look at the tee sheet and see Rory McIlroy, Jason Day, etc. staring them in the face.

For some it’s mental, for some it has to do with the type of courses played in strong field vs weak field events. Whatever the case is, we want the golfers that consistently thrive against weaker competition.

The Top 10 Weak Field Specialists are:

Harold Varner III (1.747 sg:weak vs. 0.786 sg:total)
Chris Kirk (2.185 sg:weak vs. 1.264 sg:total)
Michael Kim (1.303 sg:weak vs. 0.46 sg:total)
Webb Simpson (2.088 sg:weak vs. 1.259 sg:total)
Ryan Moore (2.16 sg:weak vs. 1.473 sg:total)
Brian Gay (0.264 sg:weak vs. -0.373 sg:total)
Scott Brown (1.268 sg:weak vs. 0.642 sg:total)
Steven Bowditch (0.364 sg:weak vs. -0.24 sg:total)
Boo Weekley (1.038 sg:weak vs. 0.454 sg:total)
Jason Bohn (1.361 sg:weak vs. 0.794 sg:total)

Golfers like Chris Kirk, Webb Simpson, and Ryan Moore generally play deep into the FEC Playoffs, but they do a lot of their work before the competition gets tough.

Since 2014, Webb Simpson has collected top 25s in about 38% of his starts. When we isolate it to just Weak Field Events, we find him earning top 25s in 9-of-14 starts (64%).

Brendan Steele is on the opposite side of the spectrum. Over his last 20 Weak Field starts, he’s finished outside the top 25 in 16 of them! A big part of it is likely due to Steele preferring a tougher course setup. Of course he just won the Safeway Open, another weak field event, so it’s obviously possible for him to contend. I won’t be banking on it personally.

Bentgrass Greens

TPC Summerlin features bentgrass greens. Bentgrass greens usually (not always) favor ball-strikers because their is no grain to read once you put the flat stick in your hand, or event when you’re trying to chip around the green.

The 10 Bentgrass Specialists remaining:

Steve Marino (0.848 sg:bentgrass vs. 0.146 sg:total)
Ernie Els (1.192 sg:bentgrass vs. 0.523 sg:total)
Chad Campbell (1.374 sg:bentgrass vs. 0.833 sg:total)
Gonzalo Fernandez-Castano (0.652 sg:bentgrass vs. 0.129 sg:total)
Robert Garrigus (0.833 sg:bentgrass vs. 0.311 sg:total)
Johnson Wagner (1.007 sg:bentgrass vs. 0.554 sg:total)
Russell Henley (1.306 sg:bentgrass vs. 0.946 sg:total)
Michael Kim (0.812 sg:bentgrass vs. 0.46 sg:total)
David Hearn (1.223 sg:bentgrass vs. 0.879 sg:total)
Tony Finau (1.512 sg:bentgrass vs. 1.231 sg:total)

One guy we lost in stage one, but is worth mentioning here is Adam Hadwin. Since 2014 he’s found top 25s in 9-of-22 starts on bentgrass (41%). To put that in perspective, that is higher than the baseline top-25 rate of golfers like Chris Kirk, Billy Horschel, Charles Howell III, Francesco Molinari, etc. If you ever want to take a shot on Hadwin, bentgrass is the time to invest.

Tony Finau is right there with him. He’s found top 25s in 15-of-26 starts on bentgrass (58%). The next closest in the field in Jimmy Walker at 47%.

Lucas Glover is the exact opposite. Over his last 22 starts on bentgrass, he’s walked away with a whooping ZERO top 25s. I was all aboard the Glover train last week at the Sanderson Farms (Bermuda) but this week he’s a complete fade. Don’t let his silly ball-striking stats persuade you this week.

Easy-to-Hit Greens

So far we’ve established that we have a weak field and bentgrass greens. It’s also important to note the ease of landing greens in regulation this week.

Since 2010 the field has averaged 74% greens in regulation. That tells us that either the fairways are really easy to hit (they aren’t) or their isn’t much trouble to find when missing fairways.

The field also averaged 63% GIR from approach shots not originating from the fairway (PGA TOUR average is generally around 50%). That adds to the case that tells us the rough is not very penal and/or there are not many obstructions that would force golfers to punch out instead of attacking the green.

It’s not a one or two year outlier either, all seven years I tracked landed into the “Easy GIR” category. So let’s see who likes this type of layout…

The Top 10 Easy GIR specialists:

Johnson Wagner (1.301 sg:easy GIR vs. 0.554 sg:total)
Russell Henley (1.651 sg:easy GIR vs. 0.946 sg:total)
Scott Piercy (1.63 sg:easy GIR vs. 1.031 sg:total)
Webb Simpson (1.776 sg:easy GIR vs. 1.259 sg:total)
Jason Bohn (1.274 sg:easy GIR vs. 0.794 sg:total)
William McGirt (1.429 sg:easy GIR vs. 1.008 sg:total)
Michael Kim (0.875 sg:easy GIR vs. 0.46 sg:total)
Robert Streb (1.508 sg:easy GIR vs. 1.096 sg:total)
Davis Love III (0.4 sg:easy GIR vs. 0.018 sg:total)
Kyle Stanley (0.539 sg:easy GIR vs. 0.175 sg:total)

Wagner, Piercy, and Henley are all worthy of note here.

Scott Piercy is the one who’s repeated the Easy-GIR success most consistently since 2014. He’s collected top 25s in 15-of-25 starts on courses that feature easy-to-hit greens.

Russell Henley sports a very admirable 12-for-24 ratio in that regard, while Wagner is at 11-of-28 (39%) which is much better than his 20% rate over that same time frame.

Driver-Heavy Courses

One method of determining club used off the tee is just to look at the field average driving distance of all drives. At TPC Summerlin, the field has averaged 294 yards of all drives which tells us they can use driver as much as they want.

Martin Laird supported that case when he said this in 2014, “It sets up for my style of golf. I like to hit driver as much as I can, and this is a golf course that allows me to do it.”

The 10 Driver-Heavy Specialists remaining:

Smylie Kaufman (1.72 sg:driver-heavy vs. 0.858 sg:total)
Greg Owen (0.771 sg:driver-heavy vs. 0.037 sg:total)
Greg Chalmers (0.513 sg:driver-heavy vs. -0.199 sg:total)
Alex Cejka (1.249 sg:driver-heavy vs. 0.746 sg:total)
Kyle Stanley (0.673 sg:driver-heavy vs. 0.175 sg:total)
Webb Simpson (1.694 sg:driver-heavy vs. 1.259 sg:total)
Russell Henley (1.351 sg:driver-heavy vs. 0.946 sg:total)
Jason Bohn (1.196 sg:driver-heavy vs. 0.794 sg:total)
Vijay Singh (0.951 sg:driver-heavy vs. 0.575 sg:total)
Michael Kim (0.791 sg:driver-heavy vs. 0.46 sg:total)

As you can see from the list above, it’s not always the bombers that crush the driver-heavy courses.

We lost Billy Horschel already but it’s worth mentioning that Billy Ho has found top 25s in 12-of-20 starts on driver-heavy courses. He’s elite in terms of finding the fairway without sacrificing distance, so it makes sense he’d excel on courses that let him use that weapon.

Bryce Molder is on the other side of the coin, finding just one top 25 over his last 18 when taking on a driver-heavy course.

Easy Courses

We already talked about how easy the greens are at TPC Summerlin. The course in general is easy, which plays into the favor of some of the golfers this week.

It takes a certain mentality to maintain torrid scoring over four rounds, but these guys have proven they can do it.

Johnson Wagner (0.832 sg:easy vs. 0.554 sg:total)
Scott Piercy (1.139 sg:easy vs. 1.031 sg:total)
Jason Bohn (0.886 sg:easy vs. 0.794 sg:total)
Webb Simpson (1.322 sg:easy vs. 1.259 sg:total)
Robert Garrigus (0.363 sg:easy vs. 0.311 sg:total)
Carl Pettersson (0.238 sg:easy vs. 0.227 sg:total)
Greg Chalmers (-0.199 sg:easy vs. -0.199 sg:total)

Chalmers sneaks in by fractions here.

GOLFERS REMAINING: 7

Baseline Performance

We now have our base of potential specialists narrowed down to seven, but we can eliminate them even more.

We can eliminate poor recent form and say goodbye to Carl Pettersson, Greg Chalmers, and Jason Bohn. They’ve been losing strokes to the field over the last 10 weeks of stroke-play events. Throw them in GPPs if you are creating lots of lineups this weeks, but don’t put them anywhere near a cash lineup.

The Specialists

Webb Simpson
Johnson Wagner
Robert Garrigus
Scott Piercy

webb-simpson-300x200

Our specialist this week is Webb Simpson!

Simpson is hated by much of the DFS golf world, but the stars are all aligning this week. On top of the specialist stats, he also boasts great course history, winning the 2014 edition and grabbing another pair of top 5s in five trips.

Johnson Wagner doesn’t have the same kind of course history to back him up, which makes him a GPP-only specialist for me.

Next is Robert Garrigus who is half-a-stroke better on bentgrass greens when comparing to his baseline since 2014. He also resides in Arizona so desert golf is right in his wheelhouse.

Last we have Scott Piercy who thrives in the desert. He was born (and still lives) in Las Vegas. He won the 2011 Reno-Tahoe Open. He’s 8-for-10 here with four top 15s. Jetlag is not out of the question, but everything else lines up great for Scotty.

The Anti-Specialists

If we look for the exact opposite of our specialists, we can find some potential fades. These are golfers that show negative numbers in all five angles this week.

Martin Flores
Jason Kokrak

Falling on the wrong side of the specialist angle in five categories is a big red flag. I will be avoiding these guys for sure, and I would recommend to at least minimize your exposure.

Best of luck everyone!

Below is a table with the full specialist data. Any fields with a 0 in them mean the sample size is not large enough. There is a minimum of 25 rounds to qualify for each angle.

The SG:Total column is a baseline performance measure (since 2014),

Form is the strokes gained per round over the last 10 weeks (including European Tour) and all the other columns will show you their performance for that angle (per round) in comparison to the baseline strokes gained with positive numbers being a good thing.

Josh Culp (futureoffantasy)

Josh didn’t own a set of golf clubs until after college but his love for the game now grows exponentially. He uses in-depth statistical analysis while trying to avoid the landmines that come with using traditional, outdated PGA stats. He can be found elsewhere writing for Rotoworld and Future of Fantasy. He can be found on twitter @futureoffantasy.
