Searching for a Specialist: Shriners Open

Finally back on the mainland for this week’s Shriners Hospitals for Children Open, which takes place in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Last week our specialist was Marc Leishman. He circled 18 birdies and an eagle in China. Sounds like a great week, right? For DraftKings scoring, yes. However, a second-round 79 threw him off the pace early in the week. We can do much better this week, so let’s take a look at TPC Summerlin.

For the Shriners we will look at Performance on Easy-to-Hit Greens, Performance against Weak Fields, Performance in the Fall, and wrap it up with Performance on Bentgrass Greens.

Here we go …

Easy-to-Hit Greens

One of the defining factors for TPC Summerlin is the ease of hitting greens.

Every year he ranks near the top in terms of easy courses to land greens in regulation. It is especially easy if you are playing from the fairway. Let’s see who likes courses like this…

The 10 Easy GIR Specialists:

Scott Piercy (1.554 sg:easy GIR vs. 1.023 sg:total)
Patton Kizzire (1.094 sg:easy GIR vs. 0.577 sg:total)
Webb Simpson (1.979 sg:easy GIR vs. 1.553 sg:total)
Ryan Blaum (1.172 sg:easy GIR vs. 0.76 sg:total)
Robert Garrigus (0.919 sg:easy GIR vs. 0.537 sg:total)
Fabian Gomez (0.861 sg:easy GIR vs. 0.494 sg:total)
Michael Kim (1.076 sg:easy GIR vs. 0.716 sg:total)
Brian Gay (0.598 sg:easy GIR vs. 0.26 sg:total)
Patrick Rodgers (1.029 sg:easy GIR vs. 0.692 sg:total)
Byeong Hun An (1.573 sg:easy GIR vs. 1.242 sg:total)

One type of golfer that shines on these type of layouts is great putters. If you allow the entire field to hit lots of greens, then the great putters will have more chances to gain strokes with their biggest weapon.

Another type that shines are the golfers that struggle around the greens. If a golfers weakest skill is their short game then it would certainly help if the course lets them hit 14 greens instead of 12, per round. That means two fewer chances of losing a stroke due to poor around-the-green play.

Weak Field Events

Some golfers love to play up to their competition. Others like to feast on the weak. For this week we prefer the latter because the OWGR field rating for the Shriners is just 140. That is actually 82 points lower then the field rating for this week’s Euro Tour event.

The Top 10 Weak Field Specialists are:

Abraham Ancer (0.262 sg:weak vs. -0.374 sg:total)
Webb Simpson (2.105 sg:weak vs. 1.553 sg:total)
Ryan Moore (2.071 sg:weak vs. 1.545 sg:total)
Nicholas Lindheim (0.033 sg:weak vs. -0.345 sg:total)
Harold Varner III (1.274 sg:weak vs. 0.913 sg:total)
Michael Kim (1.076 sg:weak vs. 0.716 sg:total)
Chris Kirk (1.53 sg:weak vs. 1.17 sg:total)
Ryan Blaum (1.083 sg:weak vs. 0.76 sg:total)
Rod Pampling (0.387 sg:weak vs. 0.068 sg:total)
Patton Kizzire (0.896 sg:weak vs. 0.577 sg:total)

webb-simpson-550x330

We have three past winners of this event on the list (Webb, Moore, and Pampling).

Abraham Ancer is an interesting name to watch. He’s yet to breakout on the PGA TOUR, but he was one of the top gainers of strokes last year on the Web.com Tour. The youngster could finally be ready to breakout on the big stage this year. This week’s field would allow him a relatively easy path toward that breakout.

If we’re targeting pure volume, Chad Campbell has actually gained the most stroke in weak field events (OWGR SoF Rating < 250) since 2014. He is also a UNLV product, so he has local ties. The form is very rotten, but it’s certainly a good spot for him to rebound.

Performance in the Fall

When fall golf rolls around it typically means that golf courses play a certain way. Sometimes that just means dormant grasses or the early stages of overseeding.

Sometimes it has to do with the climate that fall golf is usually played. Other times, it is just the strength of competition that helps particular golfers shine.

The Top 10 Fall Specialists:

Anirban Lahiri (1.956 sg:fall vs. 0.922 sg:total)
Patton Kizzire (1.359 sg:fall vs. 0.577 sg:total)
Brice Garnett (0.943 sg:fall vs. 0.216 sg:total)
Fabian Gomez (1.205 sg:fall vs. 0.494 sg:total)
Brett Stegmaier (0.798 sg:fall vs. 0.146 sg:total)
Luke List (1.986 sg:fall vs. 1.36 sg:total)
Scott Piercy (1.623 sg:fall vs. 1.023 sg:total)
Derek Fathauer (0.933 sg:fall vs. 0.37 sg:total)
William McGirt (1.634 sg:fall vs. 1.078 sg:total)
Peter Malnati (0.624 sg:fall vs. 0.08 sg:total)

For Lahiri most of his fall success comes from playing in Asia. However, he did post a T13 at last year’s RSM Classic. A course that is played on bermuda (not his preferred grass type). Perhaps there is something about the fall swing that brings out the best in Anirban.

Luke List is another fun case to look at. He’s posted 12 career finishes inside the top 15. Half of those have come between October 15th and November 20th on the calendar. It’s not just course history, either, as they’ve all come in different events, as well. We are right in his wheelhouse when it comes to timing a good finish.

Bentgrass Greens

When bentgrass greens roll around, it typically gives an edge to the tee-to-green specialists. With bermudagrass there is a skill to reading lies in the rough as well as reading grain on the greens.

Let’s see who prefers to keep it simple with bentgrass…

The Top 10 Bentgrass Specialists:

Robert Garrigus (1.087 sg:bentgrass vs. 0.537 sg:total)
Ernie Els (0.998 sg:bentgrass vs. 0.474 sg:total)
Kevin Tway (0.842 sg:bentgrass vs. 0.422 sg:total)
Jonathan Randolph (0.447 sg:bentgrass vs. 0.042 sg:total)
Chad Campbell (1.387 sg:bentgrass vs. 0.986 sg:total)
Billy Hurley III (1.038 sg:bentgrass vs. 0.731 sg:total)
Geoff Ogilvy (0.798 sg:bentgrass vs. 0.525 sg:total)
Anirban Lahiri (1.175 sg:bentgrass vs. 0.922 sg:total)
Ricky Barnes (0.811 sg:bentgrass vs. 0.561 sg:total)
Hunter Mahan (0.937 sg:bentgrass vs. 0.7 sg:total)

Golfers that have gained the most strokes on bentgrass since 2014: Bubba Watson, Charley Hoffman, Tony Finau, Jimmy Walker, and Kevin Na.

This is where we start to see a lot of golfers with ties to areas outside of “Bermuda Country.” That is another name for the South. If you want to keep it simple this week, then really try to narrow your target list to golfers with connections to Nevada, California, Arizona, or Utah.

The same types of grass often populate based on regions. That kind of familiarity can often lead to a tiny edge. When it comes to performance on the biggest stage, those tiny edges can make all the difference.

Baseline Performance

When searching for a specialist we try to narrow down our list to golfers with a positive rating in ALL four categories. Right now we have three golfers that still qualify, but one just isn’t cutting it in the baseline department.

That golfer is Brice Garnett. The Web.com Tour graduate grades out as a good course fit, but his baseline strokes gained is outside the top 100, even in a weak field like this one. It’s certainly possible he pops, heck Rod Pampling won this event last year, but I would still reserve Garnett for GPPs only.

The Specialist

Scott Piercy
Michael Kim

scott-piercy-550x330

The specialist this week is Scott Piercy.

Piercy is a Vegas native (and resident). His ties to the area are well-documented. This is very much a home game for him. I was hesitant to jump back on the train when he returned from injury at the Safeway, but he posted a top 20 there. His results weren’t as fruitful in Malaysia, but I’m ready to re-invest now that we are back on his home turf on a course that grades out very well for him.

The second specialist is Michael Kim, who is another West Coast guy. Torrey Pines was his home course growing up and he went to school at Cal-Berkeley. Kim was a standout in college, but he’s yet to breakout on TOUR. He struggles to keep up in the distance department on a weekly basis, but this week’s course allows an easy conduit to pepper greens in regulation. That should allow his biggest weapon (putter) to shine.

Anti-Specialists

Colt Knost
Jason Kokrak
Jonas Blixt
Michael Thompson
Harris English

These are the golfers that grade out POORLY in ALL FOUR categories this week. Blixt actually has a third-place finish at this event, but the rest of his history on TOUR suggests this isn’t a great fit. Of course Jonas Blixt rarely plays by the rules when it comes to form, stats, etc.

Super Simple Specialist Ratings

The goal of this article is to isolate course fit, to see who should outperform their baseline.

However, anyone with common sense knows that baseline talent (and current form) can’t be ignored when handicapping golf.

Combining Baseline Strokes Gained with Current Form and Specialist Rating, we get a Top 20 ranking that looks like this:

Webb Simpson
Tony Finau
Luke List
Ryan Moore
Anirban Lahiri
Ben Silverman
Scott Brown
Kevin Streelman
Jamie Lovemark
Nick Taylor
Tyler Duncan
Byeong Hun An
Cameron Tringale
Harold Varner III
Shawn Stefani
Patrick Rodgers
William McGirt
Scott Piercy
Bryson DeChambeau
Kevin Na

It’s worth mentioning that golfers like Ben Silverman and Tyler Duncan crack the list, but both are working with small samples. I wouldn’t Sharpie them into your lineups, but they are at least worth a look.

Best of luck everyone!

Below is a table with the full specialist data. Any fields with a 0 in them mean the sample size is not large enough. There is a minimum of 30 rounds to qualify for each angle.

The SG:Total column is a baseline performance measure (since 2014).

Form looks at the total strokes gained, adjusted to field strength, over the last 8 weeks (PGA, Web, and Euro).

Josh Culp (futureoffantasy)

Josh didn’t own a set of golf clubs until after college but his love for the game now grows exponentially. He uses in-depth statistical analysis while trying to avoid the landmines that come with using traditional, outdated PGA stats. He can be found elsewhere writing for Rotoworld and Future of Fantasy. He can be found on twitter @futureoffantasy.
