Searching for a Specialist: Shriners Open

Returning from Asia, the heavy artillery heads to Las Vegas this week to battle with TPC Summerlin.

Looking for a specialist, we will review past performance on specific course/tournament angles and determine who should outperform their baseline.

Reviewing our search from last week, Tony Finau always hoisted the hardware as a specialist while Ian Poulter and Kyle Stanley both picked up top 25s. Rory and Fitz were complete flops, though. A mixed bag.

This week we look at Performance in the Fall, Performance on Hard-to-Hit Fairways, Performance on TPC Courses, and Performance in the West.

This is one of the few weeks that I am overlooking grass type. There hasn’t been a strong link between bentgrass performance and success at TPC Summerlin, so there must be something unique about the grasses here.

Performance in the Fall

The wraparound schedule continues this week.

Some golfers love this time of the year, as it is an easy time to rack up some FedExCup points.

It also features a lot of courses that don’t require distance. TPC Summerlin also fits that bill as all sorts of play styles have succeeded here.

The 10 Fall Specialists:

Cody Gribble (1.053 sg:fall vs. 0.096 sg:total)
Graeme McDowell (2 sg:fall vs. 1.109 sg:total)
Anirban Lahiri (1.625 sg:fall vs. 0.978 sg:total)
Scott Piercy (1.66 sg:fall vs. 1.054 sg:total)
Alex Cejka (1.37 sg:fall vs. 0.864 sg:total)
Davis Love III (0.417 sg:fall vs. -0.065 sg:total)
Ryan Blaum (1.266 sg:fall vs. 0.816 sg:total)
Brice Garnett (0.998 sg:fall vs. 0.578 sg:total)
Patrick Rodgers (1.328 sg:fall vs. 0.912 sg:total)
John Senden (1.154 sg:fall vs. 0.765 sg:total)

Quantity: The golfers that have the most strokes gained in the Fall since 2014 are Tony Finau, Lucas Glover, Scott Piercy, Gary Woodland, and Brendan Steele.

Like I mentioned before, no need for distance in most of these fall events. That shows up in the list above with names like G-Mac, Piercy, Cejka, and others making the list.

It seems that Kuchar is still in vacation mode during the fall as he’s been nearly a shot worse per round (compared to his baseline) in fall events. Will that change this year as he enters off a down year, in need of a spark?

Hard-to-Hit Fairways

TPC Summerlin features firm fairways that make it tough to find the short grass.

That means lots of shots from the rough, but also plenty of shots from the first cut or not-so-penal rough, based on balls that just roll through the fairways.

Let’s see who likes this type of layout…

The Top 10 Hard Fairways Specialists:

Carlos Ortiz (1.361 sg:hard fairways vs. 0.477 sg:total)
Chesson Hadley (1.645 sg:hard fairways vs. 0.955 sg:total)
Alex Prugh (0.885 sg:hard fairways vs. 0.385 sg:total)
Brendan Steele (1.916 sg:hard fairways vs. 1.464 sg:total)
Stephan Jaeger (0.824 sg:hard fairways vs. 0.381 sg:total)
Matt Kuchar (2.537 sg:hard fairways vs. 2.127 sg:total)
Adam Schenk (0.984 sg:hard fairways vs. 0.589 sg:total)
James Hahn (1.384 sg:hard fairways vs. 1.016 sg:total)
Rory Sabbatini (1.205 sg:hard fairways vs. 0.843 sg:total)
Tom Hoge (1.005 sg:hard fairways vs. 0.659 sg:total)

Quantity: Golfers with the most weighted strokes gained on hard fairway courses since 2014 are Matt Kuchar, Tony Finau, Gary Woodland, Webb Simpson, and Jordan Spieth.

While Kuchar was near the bottom in the first angle, he’s near the top here. While angle will win out?

TPC Courses

The TPC Network provides a mostly private experience with great practice facilities and well-maintained courses.

There are some obvious exceptions, but overall, TPC courses are some of the easier layouts on TOUR.

This type of golf really appeals to some while others prefer a tougher test.

The Top 10 TPC Specialists:

Abraham Ancer (1.749 sg:TPC vs. 0.884 sg:total)
Wes Roach (0.998 sg:TPC vs. 0.138 sg:total)
Bronson Burgoon (1.692 sg:TPC vs. 0.972 sg:total)
Mackenzie Hughes (1.479 sg:TPC vs. 0.817 sg:total)
Max Homa (-0.372 sg:TPC vs. -0.9 sg:total)
Beau Hossler (1.886 sg:TPC vs. 1.36 sg:total)
Chris Kirk (1.783 sg:TPC vs. 1.264 sg:total)
Wesley Bryan (0.893 sg:TPC vs. 0.389 sg:total)
Bryson DeChambeau (2.242 sg:TPC vs. 1.745 sg:total)
Chesson Hadley (1.407 sg:TPC vs. 0.955 sg:total)

Quantity: Most weighted strokes gained on TPC Courses since 2014 are Tony Finau, Matt Kuchar, Chris Kirk, Bryson DeChambeau, and Danny Lee.

Locals like Scott Piercy and Ryan Moore show up near the bottom of this angle. Their local knowledge can certainly make up the difference this week.

Wild Wild West

This is a new one I just started tracking, but I’m excited about it.

There are always some golfers that crush it on the West Coast before the Florida swing comes and smacks them in the mouth. Let’s see who some of those golfers are:

The Top 10 Western US Specialists:

Brandon Harkins (1.917 sg:west vs. 1.033 sg:total)
Scott Stallings (1.527 sg:west vs. 0.765 sg:total)
Alex Prugh (1.142 sg:west vs. 0.385 sg:total)
Brendan Steele (2.173 sg:west vs. 1.464 sg:total)
Freddie Jacobson (1.458 sg:west vs. 0.768 sg:total)
Martin Laird (1.992 sg:west vs. 1.325 sg:total)
Harris English (1.684 sg:west vs. 1.073 sg:total)
Max Homa (-0.302 sg:west vs. -0.9 sg:total)
Tom Hoge (1.254 sg:west vs. 0.659 sg:total)
Richy Werenski (1.188 sg:west vs. 0.616 sg:total)

Quantity: Most weighted strokes gained in the West since 2014 are Brendan Steele, Jordan Spieth, Martin Laird, Tony Finau, and Kevin Na.

Prugh is the ultimate West Coast Specialist. He has 11 career top 25s and NINE of them have come in Arizona, California, or Hawaii. He was born in Washington and calls Las Vegas home. It’s nice when the stats have a rational explanation like this one. He’s still a longshot, but certainly a lively one.

Baseline Performance

We have five golfers who check the box in all four angles. One of them provides a bit too much risk based on his form, though.

That would be Sung Kang, who sits at 72nd in form.

He looks to be a good course fit, but I’d reserve him for GPPs only, based on his sub-par form.

The Specialists

Brendan Steele
Martin Laird
Vaughn Taylor
Ryan Blaum

The specialist this week is Brendan Steele!

brendan-steele-800x480

Steeley had an awful summer, losing strokes to the field in six straight starts, beginning at the WGC-Bridgestone. Since then, he’s gained strokes over the field in two of three starts this fall. With his form starting to simmer again, I’m willing to take a chance, given his great course fit.

Martin Laird is a past champ here and also has plenty of success in the region.

Looking at Vaughn Taylor’s top tournaments over the last few years from a SG point of view, we see the Pebble Beach Pro-Am (x2) and the WM Phoenix Open. This part of the country certainly treats him well.

Last we have Ryan Blaum, who has six finishes of T33 or better in the West (15 starts). That puts him right around his baseline, but his overall performance in the fall is nearly half a stroke higher than his baseline. Heyyo.

The Anti-Specialists

We have four golfers that qualify as specialists this week, but who does the opposite, grading out negatively in all of the angles?

Nick Watney
Chris Stroud
Scott Langley

Watney has not done much damage in the fall. At least not since 2014 when this data starts. Stroud won in Reno but that was Stableford scoring. That won’t show up here.

I have no interest in any of these golfers, personally.

Super Simple Specialist Ratings

The goal of this article is to isolate course fit, to see who should outperform their baseline.

However, anyone with common sense knows that baseline talent (and current form) can’t be ignored when handicapping golf.

Combining Baseline Strokes Gained with Current Form and Specialist Rating, we get a Top 20 ranking that looks like this:

Gary Woodland
Patrick Cantlay
Austin Cook
Kevin Na
Tony Finau
Martin Laird
Rickie Fowler
Webb Simpson
Brendan Steele
Lucas Glover
Sungjae Im
Aaron Wise
Bryson DeChambeau
Beau Hossler
Scott Piercy
Ryan Palmer
Chase Wright
Kevin Tway
Jason Kokrak
Patrick Rodgers

There are some interesting names here. First, we see Austin Cook as #3 and Kevin Na at #4. Cook I could understand, but Na’s form is a lot bumpier than his overall strokes gained suggests.

Overall, this does look like a solid list though.

Best of luck everyone!

Below is a table with the full specialist data. Any fields with a 0 in them mean the sample size is not large enough. There is a minimum of 30 rounds to qualify for each angle.

The SG:TOTAL column is a baseline performance measure (since 2014). It is time-weighted so more recent results count for more than finishes from years ago.

HISTORY column is a weighted performance metric based on course history. I’ve made small adjustments for sample sizes but be sure to check on number of course rounds before blindly following this number.

FORM looks at the total strokes gained, adjusted to field strength, over the last 8 weeks (PGA TOUR and European Tour).

SIMPLE RATING looks at SGTotal, FORM, and SPECIALIST RATING to create a simple rating that includes course fit but doesn’t overweight it.

Josh Culp (futureoffantasy)

Josh didn’t own a set of golf clubs until after college but his love for the game now grows exponentially. He uses in-depth statistical analysis while trying to avoid the landmines that come with using traditional, outdated PGA stats. He can be found elsewhere writing for Rotoworld and Future of Fantasy. He can be found on twitter @futureoffantasy.
