Searching for a Specialist: St. Jude Classic

rotogrinders_user_22704

Welcome back to another specialist search as we prep for the calm before the U.S. Open storm.

Last week Matt Kuchar was our top specialist and he threw his name into contention but ended at fourth place. The rest of the specialist crew was ho-hum, with Hadwin and Keegan being the turds in the punch bowl.

Not a terrible week, especially if you focused on the Nicklaus Specialists but definitely room for improvement as we turn our attention toward TPC Southwind.

For this week’s event we are going to look at performance on Tough-to-Hit Fairways, Tough-to-Hit Greens, Driver-Heavy Courses, Bermudagrass Greens, and Weak Field Events.

Let’s go…

Hard-to-Hit Fairways

TPC Southwind has some tough-to-hit fairways, with the field averaging just 55% hit since 2010.

Part of that is because it allows you to pull driver, which leads some guys to grip-it and rip-it. More drivers will led to fewer fairways hit.

The Top 10 Hard Fairway Specialists are:

K.J. Choi (1.616 sg:hard fairways vs. 0.625 sg:total)
Jason Bohn (1.484 sg:hard fairways vs. 0.697 sg:total)
Smylie Kaufman (1.364 sg:hard fairways vs. 0.727 sg:total)
Harris English (1.783 sg:hard fairways vs. 1.232 sg:total)
Chez Reavie (1.476 sg:hard fairways vs. 0.961 sg:total)
Camilo Villegas (1.126 sg:hard fairways vs. 0.623 sg:total)
Patton Kizzire (1.09 sg:hard fairways vs. 0.595 sg:total)
Brett Stegmaier (0.575 sg:hard fairways vs. 0.088 sg:total)
Patrick Rodgers (1.085 sg:hard fairways vs. 0.624 sg:total)
Daniel Summerhays (1.484 sg:hard fairways vs. 1.062 sg:total)

There are two methods to thriving on tough fairways. The first is to bomb it and have closer approach shots, since everyone will be playing from the rough anyway. This fits guys like Smylie and Rodgers.

Other guys like Choi, Reavie, and Summerhays just pelt every fairway or don’t miss by much. That means they could have 10 or 11 good looks on approach per round instead of the field which may have 6 or 7 decent approach looks. Those opportunities can add up as long as their long irons are dialed in.

Hard-to-Hit Greens

When greens are tough to hit, it generally means they are small, firm/bouncy, or there are a lot of approach shots coming from the rough.

This week’s course checks all those boxes, so let’s see who fares well in these conditions.

The 10 Hard GIR Specialists:

Cameron Percy (1.315 sg:hard GIR vs. 0.473 sg:total)
Matt Every (0.304 sg:hard GIR vs. -0.531 sg:total)
Bryson DeChambeau (1.38 sg:hard GIR vs. 0.65 sg:total)
Brett Stegmaier (0.737 sg:hard GIR vs. 0.088 sg:total)
Tom Hoge (0.958 sg:hard GIR vs. 0.367 sg:total)
Alex Cejka (1.205 sg:hard GIR vs. 0.673 sg:total)
Daniel Berger (2.091 sg:hard GIR vs. 1.561 sg:total)
Charl Schwartzel (2.12 sg:hard GIR vs. 1.691 sg:total)
Nick Watney (1.375 sg:hard GIR vs. 0.95 sg:total)
Phil Mickelson (2.389 sg:hard GIR vs. 1.967 sg:total)

There are plenty of routes to success when greens are tough to hit. First, you can be elite in your approach play out of the rough. Second, you can hit more fairways than the field, giving you more approach shots from the fairway. Third, you can be an elite scrambler. Fourth, you can be a master course manager.

Instead of grading these tools individually, we can just look at the Hard GIR performance as a whole.

One alarming name near the bottom of the list is Francesco Molinari. His strokes gained stats on Hard GIR (and Hard FW) courses suggest he’s likely to earn a cut made, but not likely to crack the top 20. Of course he’s playing great golf right now, which may override that, but this is a potential reason to lower your Moli exposure.

Driver-Heavy Courses

Looking at the field average driving distance at TPC Southwind since 2010, we see 285 yards which is higher than average for sure.

Part of that is due to the heat in Memphis, allowing the ball to fly further, I’d imagine. Also, the course has seven par 4s over 450 yards, so if you’re not pulling driver then you are going to be coming into the greens with long-irons instead of mid-irons.

The Top 10 Driver-Heavy Specialists:

Brian Gay (1.045 sg:driver-heavy vs. 0.161 sg:total)
Max Homa (0.207 sg:driver-heavy vs. -0.657 sg:total)
Ernie Els (1.065 sg:driver-heavy vs. 0.435 sg:total)
Boo Weekley (1.04 sg:driver-heavy vs. 0.432 sg:total)
Kevin Tway (0.66 sg:driver-heavy vs. 0.053 sg:total)
Billy Horschel (1.904 sg:driver-heavy vs. 1.333 sg:total)
Rickie Fowler (2.672 sg:driver-heavy vs. 2.129 sg:total)
Smylie Kaufman (1.26 sg:driver-heavy vs. 0.727 sg:total)
John Rollins (0.086 sg:driver-heavy vs. -0.442 sg:total)
Brett Stegmaier (0.607 sg:driver-heavy vs. 0.088 sg:total)

We see plenty of distance on the list above, but also a few accuracy specialists that still thrive on driver-heavy courses because they can split fairway after fairway.

Brian Gay certainly fits that fold as he’s not very long off the tee, but shoots arrows and then relies on his short game.

Bermuda Greens

The greens at TPC Southwind have been bermuda since 2004, so we have plenty of history on how golfers fare here with this grass type.

The biggest thing with bermudagrass greens is speed control. If you’re going against the grain then your putt will be noticeably slower than if you’re putting with the grain.

Let’s see who fares well on these bermuda greens:

The Top 10 Bermuda Specialists:

Matt Every (0.062 sg:bermuda vs. -0.531 sg:total)
Y.E. Yang (0.36 sg:bermuda vs. -0.139 sg:total)
Tag Ridings (0.222 sg:bermuda vs. -0.261 sg:total)
Steven Alker (0.535 sg:bermuda vs. 0.077 sg:total)
Max Homa (-0.207 sg:bermuda vs. -0.657 sg:total)
Stuart Appleby (0.808 sg:bermuda vs. 0.419 sg:total)
Rafa Cabrera Bello (1.846 sg:bermuda vs. 1.469 sg:total)
Brett Stegmaier (0.462 sg:bermuda vs. 0.088 sg:total)
John Merrick (0.38 sg:bermuda vs. 0.009 sg:total)
Fabian Gomez (0.791 sg:bermuda vs. 0.432 sg:total)

We have two late entries on the list above (Yang & Merrick) who aren’t even listed on any sites this week. The next in line would be Greg Owen and Ben Martin but check out the full list in the table at the bottom.

Kevin Tway is an interesting name near the bottom of the board. He is 0.619 strokes worse than his baseline when playing on bermuda. Is that because his recent hot streak came on bentgrass courses or did his recent hot streak happen because he was playing on bentgrass courses? That is not something I can answer for certain but I just perfectly fine keeping him off my list of targets this week.

Weak Field Events

With much of the TOUR prepping for the U.S. Open next week, they are skipping the St. Jude Classic.

I think it’s a bit odd since TPC Southwind is a difficult track that should be great prep for a USGA-type setup. However, PGA TOUR pros like to soften their schedule this time of the year to avoid fatigue.

That leaves us with a thin field, so let’s see who plays well in these weaker-field events:

The Top 10 Weak Field Specialists:

Nicholas Lindheim (0.717 sg:weak vs. 0.01 sg:total)
Chris Kirk (1.859 sg:weak vs. 1.221 sg:total)
Harold Varner III (1.389 sg:weak vs. 0.794 sg:total)
Brett Stegmaier (0.652 sg:weak vs. 0.088 sg:total)
Patton Kizzire (1.153 sg:weak vs. 0.595 sg:total)
Ryan Blaum (1.433 sg:weak vs. 0.895 sg:total)
Scott Brown (1.181 sg:weak vs. 0.699 sg:total)
Jason Bohn (1.128 sg:weak vs. 0.697 sg:total)
Phil Mickelson (2.381 sg:weak vs. 1.967 sg:total)
Boo Weekley (0.839 sg:weak vs. 0.432 sg:total)

Chris Kirk is an interesting name here. He’s struggled with form lately but he owns a win in Tennessee (Web.com Tour) so perhaps there is something about the state he likes.

As you can tell by Daniel Berger’s large negative number in this category, this shouldn’t be our top angle but overall it has a strong correlation to success here. Definitely tie-breaker worthy.

Baseline Performance

The goal of this search is to find some golfers with a good course fit. At the same time, we don’t want to rely on golfers that need the week of their lives just to crack the top 25.

The top list of golfers are struggling with their current form (below the field average), making them GPP-only options despite their good course fit.

GPP-Only Options:

Greg Owen
John Rollins
Cameron Percy
Steve Wheatcroft
John Peterson
Ken Duke
Brett Stegmaier
John Merrick

Not the prettiest list of names, but the course matches their skillsets and the field is weak. As the header suggests, keep these guys in GPPs only and keep their exposure limited.

The Specialists

Camilo Villegas
Phil Mickelson

camilo-villegas-300x200

Our specialist this week is Camilo Villegas!

Looking at his form line, you may wonder how he didn’t fall into the GPP-only bucket. Villegas popped a T10 at the Valero Texas Open just three starts ago which makes up for plenty of below-average play elsewhere.

That being said, if you value consistency over upside when it comes to grading form then Villegas is not your man. I will definitely be tossing him on some lineups this week and expect him to be sub-2% owned. Looking at his track record at TPC Southwind he is 10-for-11 with seven top 20s.

The second specialist is Lefty who needs no explanation. He feasts on tough setups like this and his results here back that up (T2-T3-T11-T2 in his last four visits).

The Anti-Specialists

The specialists above are positive in all five angles, but which golfers are the opposite and show a poor course fit?

Derek Fathauer
Spencer Levin

Best of luck everyone!

Below is a table with the full specialist data. Any fields with a 0 in them mean the sample size is not large enough. There is a minimum of 25 rounds to qualify for each angle.

Josh Culp (futureoffantasy)

Josh didn’t own a set of golf clubs until after college but his love for the game now grows exponentially. He uses in-depth statistical analysis while trying to avoid the landmines that come with using traditional, outdated PGA stats. He can be found elsewhere writing for Rotoworld and Future of Fantasy. He can be found on twitter @futureoffantasy.
