Searching for a Specialist: The Greenbrier Classic

rotogrinders_user_22704

Welcome to this week’s specialist search.

Looking at past results, we are going to find out who fits the course at The Old White TPC.

A few angles we will target at Performance on Bentgrass Greens, Performance on Easy-to-Hit Fairways, Performance in the Summer, and Performance on Par 70 Courses.

Thanks to some valuable input from commenters, I’ve also made an update to the Form category in the table shown at the bottom of the article. It was just a small tweak, but it now gives a slight edge to consistent form instead of raw strokes gained. It certainly passes the eye test a bit better than the previous method.

Here we go …

Bentgrass Greens

You may have noticed by now that bentgrass greens are the common grass type now that we’ve left the Florida swing behind us.

When bentgrass greens are in play, so are elite ball-strikers. Those two go hand-in-hand, partially because of the firmness of the greens during the summer (better ball-strikers can hold the greens better) and partially because it removes an element of green reading (judging speed based on grain that is so often found in bermudagrass).

The Top 10 Bentgrass Specialists are:

Jonathan Randolph (0.714 sg:bentgrass vs. -0.013 sg:total)
Michael Putnam (1.016 sg:bentgrass vs. 0.448 sg:total)
Miguel Angel Carballo (-0.105 sg:bentgrass vs. -0.568 sg:total)
Gonzalo Fernandez-Castano (0.686 sg:bentgrass vs. 0.235 sg:total)
Chad Campbell (1.409 sg:bentgrass vs. 0.972 sg:total)
Johnson Wagner (0.937 sg:bentgrass vs. 0.509 sg:total)
Geoff Ogilvy (0.871 sg:bentgrass vs. 0.465 sg:total)
Robert Garrigus (0.843 sg:bentgrass vs. 0.444 sg:total)
Chris Stroud (1.09 sg:bentgrass vs. 0.693 sg:total)
S.J. Park (0.235 sg:bentgrass vs. -0.151 sg:total)

We saw Wagner and Ogilvy both pop up last week while taking on the bentgrass greens of TPC Potomac. Could that be the start of a streak?

If we isolate our list to only golfers with a baseline SGT of 1 or greater than our top-5 bentgrass specialists are: Russell Henley, Danny Lee, Stewart Cink, Tony Finau, and Patrick Reed.

These are the types of target lists we can find if you dive through the stat table at the bottom. It’s fun to narrow down our search to true specialists, but there is also valuable information to be picked up along the way!

Performance on Easy-to-Hit Fairways

The fairways at The Old White TPC are some of the widest on TOUR.

It’s a tree-lined resort course that is not tricky as long as you keep the ball in play.

The 10 Easy Fairway Specialists:

Bobby Wyatt (0.072 sg:easy fairways vs. -0.851 sg:total)
Tyler Aldridge (0.82 sg:easy fairways vs. -0.031 sg:total)
Charlie Beljan (0.11 sg:easy fairways vs. -0.713 sg:total)
Carl Pettersson (0.899 sg:easy fairways vs. 0.173 sg:total)
Ryan Armour (0.749 sg:easy fairways vs. 0.055 sg:total)
Kelly Kraft (0.834 sg:easy fairways vs. 0.249 sg:total)
Steven Alker (0.525 sg:easy fairways vs. 0.038 sg:total)
Bryce Molder (1.135 sg:easy fairways vs. 0.652 sg:total)
Geoff Ogilvy (0.944 sg:easy fairways vs. 0.465 sg:total)
Jamie Lovemark (1.456 sg:easy fairways vs. 0.991 sg:total)

If we isolate our list to golfers with a baseline of 1+ SGT, we get Jimmy Walker, Kevin Kisner, Russell Henley, Patrick Reed, and Tony Finau.

Golfers who like the tight, tree-lined fairways of Hilton Head, for example, will be in for a much different test this week. It’s no surprise to see Boo Weekley toward the bottom of this list, because he does some of his best work at the RBC Heritage and other similar setups.

Par 70 Courses

Playing a par 70 means only two par 5s to score on. That means golfers must be airtight on the par 3s and par 4s and then not mess up on the few par 5 chances they do get.

The Top 10 Par 70 Specialists:

Greg Owen (0.892 sg:par70 vs. 0.111 sg:total)
David Lingmerth (1.487 sg:par70 vs. 0.911 sg:total)
Brett Stegmaier (0.643 sg:par70 vs. 0.132 sg:total)
Tyrone Van Aswegen (0.717 sg:par70 vs. 0.263 sg:total)
Brian Gay (0.626 sg:par70 vs. 0.174 sg:total)
Michael Putnam (0.88 sg:par70 vs. 0.448 sg:total)
Ted Potter, Jr. (0.481 sg:par70 vs. 0.056 sg:total)
Kelly Kraft (0.67 sg:par70 vs. 0.249 sg:total)
Webb Simpson (1.847 sg:par70 vs. 1.43 sg:total)
Tommy Gainey (-0.157 sg:par70 vs. -0.536 sg:total)

Not a lot of firepower on the list above, but plenty of solid ball-striking. When the importance of par 3s is amplified, it makes sense that great iron players would step up their game.

Going back to our exercise of Baseline SGT of 1+ we get the following Top 5 for Par 70 Courses: Webb Simpson, Kevin Kisner, Luke Donald, Harris English, and Danny Lee.

It’s really bomber’s paradise at the bottom of this list with golfers like Luke List, Harold Varner III, J.B. Holmes, Andrew Loupe, and Smylie Kaufman all grading out in the bottom 20 of the par 70 category. Don’t let that sway you from picking them entirely, but it’s important to keep your expectations at a reasonable level if you go bomber-heavy this week.

Summertime Specialists

When summertime comes around, we know some golfers are consistently elevating their game to ensure they retain their TOUR card.

Others are ramping up their schedule to make sure they peak for all of the major championships.

Some golfers just like the type of golf courses that get played during the summer portion of the PGA TOUR schedule (northern states, bentgrass greens, weak fields).

The Top 10 Summer Specialists:

Si Woo Kim (1.774 sg:summer vs. 0.82 sg:total)
Johnson Wagner (1.284 sg:summer vs. 0.509 sg:total)
Michael Putnam (1.1 sg:summer vs. 0.448 sg:total)
Steven Bowditch (0.108 sg:summer vs. -0.498 sg:total)
Stuart Appleby (0.993 sg:summer vs. 0.414 sg:total)
Angel Cabrera (0.833 sg:summer vs. 0.257 sg:total)
Ricky Barnes (1.051 sg:summer vs. 0.496 sg:total)
Geoff Ogilvy (1.016 sg:summer vs. 0.465 sg:total)
Willy Wilcox (1.306 sg:summer vs. 0.767 sg:total)
Gonzalo Fernandez-Castano (0.768 sg:summer vs. 0.235 sg:total)

It’s important to have context in any stat you look at. For Si Woo Kim, he is still the top summer specialist, despite last week’s horrid display. We must remember that our sample size is still low for Kim. Did he happen to get hot in the summer last year and that is boosting his summer stats? Or was last week an aberration, and he’s ready to bounce back of the next few months? We will find out.

Like we’ve done with the other three angles, here is the list if we only look at Baseline SGT of 1 or greater: Chris Kirk, Robert Streb, Jason Kokrak, Keegan Bradley, and Patrick Reed.

Baseline Performance

In our search for a specialist we want to find a good course fit. At the same time, we don’t want to rely on a career-week just to find a top 30. Let’s remove any golfers that fall below the average baseline performance for this week’s field:

Shawn Stefani
Cameron Percy
Robert Garrigus
Miguel Angel Carballo
Brendon de Jonge
Carl Pettersson
Steven Bowditch
Charlie Beljan

These would be the GPP-Only Specialists with a good course fit, but none of them leap off the page as interesting options.

The Specialists

Michael Putnam
David Lingmerth
Chad Campbell
David Hearn
Keegan Bradley

Our specialist this week is Michael Putnam!

I don’t see the upside with Putnam, but if we’re in need of a sneaky cut-made with low ownership, he just may be the guy. I have him graded out as the 23rd highest cut-made probability (11% higher than his week-to-week baseline) but just 83rd in terms of finding a top 20.

keegan-bradley-300x200

David Lingmerth and Keegan Bradley are the two specialists that attract me most. Lingmerth has finished T16 or better in all three trips to The Old White TPC and also arrives in great form.

Keegan Bradley is the king of imploding, but he is also perfect at The Old White TPC, finishing T43-T46-T4-T29 in four visits. His ball-striking has also been elite in his last two starts.

The Anti-Specialists

The specialists above are positive in all four angles, but which golfers are the opposite and show a poor course fit?

K.J. Choi
John Huh
Phil Mickelson

Phil Mickelson an anti-specialists!? This is where it’s important to analyze the anti-specialists instead of blindly fading. Mickelson grades out as the second-highest baseline SGT since 2014. Despite being an anti-specialist (poor course fit) he would still be 2nd on the list if we combined SG:Total with Specialist Rating.

It may be a poor course fit, but class is still permanent. I won’t be fading Lefty.

Best of luck everyone!

Below is a table with the full specialist data. Any fields with a 0 in them mean the sample size is not large enough. There is a minimum of 25 rounds to qualify for each angle.

The SG:Total column is a baseline performance measure (since 2014),

Form looks at the performance over the last 10 weeks (PGA & Euro).

Josh Culp (futureoffantasy)

Josh didn’t own a set of golf clubs until after college but his love for the game now grows exponentially. He uses in-depth statistical analysis while trying to avoid the landmines that come with using traditional, outdated PGA stats. He can be found elsewhere writing for Rotoworld and Future of Fantasy. He can be found on twitter @futureoffantasy.
