Searching for a Specialist: The Honda Classic

EDITOR’S NOTE: Click here to learn how you could win a trip to Augusta with the Tour Junkies and FantasyDraft!

The start of the Florida Swing kicks off this week at PGA National.

The WGC-Mexico event will interrupt our bermuda momentum, but we should get used to targeting some bermuda specialist over the next month.

Reviewing our crop of specialists last week, Kokrak and Taylor flashed their names into contention, settling for top 20s. Chez opened strong before fading fast as the week went on. Lastly, Keegan and Jimmy missed the cut. Looking at some of the top finishes, Bubba, Stallings, and Laird were all inside the top 10 in specialist rating and all finished the week inside the top 10 on the actual leaderboard.

For the Honda Classic we will look at Performance on Bermuda Greens, Less-than-Driver Courses, Florida Course, Windy Rounds, and Par 70 Courses.

Here we go …

Performance on Bermuda Greens

After a West Coast Swing filled with Poa Annua and Overseeded Greens, many Southern Boys will be glad to return to bermuda land.

These grainy greens aren’t for everyone but experience in the South, particularly in Florida, definitely helps this week.

The 10 Bermuda Specialists:

Ollie Schniederjans (2.292 sg:bermuda vs. 1.34 sg:total)
Louis Oosthuizen (2.769 sg:bermuda vs. 1.914 sg:total)
Ryan Armour (1.595 sg:bermuda vs. 0.867 sg:total)
Smylie Kaufman (1.08 sg:bermuda vs. 0.432 sg:total)
Matt Every (0.08 sg:bermuda vs. -0.516 sg:total)
Grayson Murray (1.26 sg:bermuda vs. 0.701 sg:total)
Lucas Glover (1.928 sg:bermuda vs. 1.371 sg:total)
Luke Donald (1.663 sg:bermuda vs. 1.14 sg:total)
Ben Martin (1.384 sg:bermuda vs. 0.948 sg:total)
Ian Poulter (1.879 sg:bermuda vs. 1.451 sg:total)

Everyone on the list currently lives in Florida or attended school in the Southeast.

Given his short career, Ollie’s sample size is obviously not pages long but that split is remarkable, nearly a stroke better per round when it comes to bermuda versus his baseline.

On the flip side, we have Patrick Rodgers who attended school at Stanford. He now resides in Florida so we may see this split swing as he progresses but for now I will gladly avoid.

Also near the bottom is Robert Garrigus who has Idaho and Arizona roots, far from Bermuda territory.

Less-than-Driver Courses

With water lurking everywhere, opting for driver is a risk-reward play that most golfers will avoid this week.

“You can’t really overpower it too much. There’s a lot of holes where you’re hitting less than driver off the tee” – Rickie Fowler

“I enjoy that, where you have to think a little more instead of just hitting driver and bomb it down every single time and see where you are” -Martin Kaymer

The Top 10 LT Driver Specialists are:

Wesley Bryan (1.524 sg:less-than-driver vs. 0.73 sg:total)
Joel Dahmen (0.868 sg:less-than-driver vs. 0.257 sg:total)
J.J. Spaun (1.537 sg:less-than-driver vs. 0.956 sg:total)
Graeme McDowell (1.575 sg:less-than-driver vs. 1.112 sg:total)
Ted Potter, Jr. (0.91 sg:less-than-driver vs. 0.462 sg:total)
Luke Donald (1.566 sg:less-than-driver vs. 1.14 sg:total)
Matt Every (-0.129 sg:less-than-driver vs. -0.516 sg:total)
Nicholas Lindheim (0.262 sg:less-than-driver vs. -0.12 sg:total)
Jason Dufner (1.999 sg:less-than-driver vs. 1.626 sg:total)
Cameron Tringale (1.093 sg:less-than-driver vs. 0.756 sg:total)

Nobody from this list is going to be winning the local long-drive competition, anytime soon.

Wes Bryan is one who immediately showed a strong preference for shorter, less-than-driver layouts. He even took the driver out of his bag a few weeks ago since he can’t control it.

At the very bottom of the list is Kevin Tway. The Jupiter resident currently ranks 3rd on TOUR in driving distance. I guess he doesn’t like when a course takes away his biggest weapon.

Florida Courses

We already looked at bermuda performance, which you’ll notice a lot of overlap with this angle.

Still, since we have so many events played in Florida, we can get picky and see who really thrives down here in the Sunshine State.

The Top 10 Florida Specialists:

Adam Scott (3.201 sg:florida vs. 2.253 sg:total)
Greg Chalmers (0.911 sg:florida vs. -0.025 sg:total)
Blayne Barber (1.344 sg:florida vs. 0.605 sg:total)
Graeme McDowell (1.829 sg:florida vs. 1.112 sg:total)
Lucas Glover (2.062 sg:florida vs. 1.371 sg:total)
Ben Martin (1.533 sg:florida vs. 0.948 sg:total)
Louis Oosthuizen (2.438 sg:florida vs. 1.914 sg:total)
Jhonattan Vegas (1.549 sg:florida vs. 1.044 sg:total)
Padraig Harrington (1.016 sg:florida vs. 0.512 sg:total)
Morgan Hoffmann (1.16 sg:florida vs. 0.656 sg:total)

Article Image

Adam Scott has picked up three wins in Florida, including one here at PGA National. If he’s going to snap out of his funk, this would be a good spot to do that.

At the very bottom of this angle, we see Scott Stallings. He is a poa annua specialist that arrives with a bit of form. Don’t let his strong play on poa influence you too much since he’s more than a shot worse per round when it comes to playing on these water-heavy, Florida courses.

Performance in the Wind

This week’s event is typically one of the windiest stops on TOUR.

This week looks no different with forecasts calling for a steady breeze for most of the week. Thursday is currently the windiest with gusts up to 25 MPH possible. Having a few wind specialists up our sleeve can’t be a bad thing.

The Top 10 Wind Specialists:

Kevin Tway (1.79 sg:wind vs. 0.854 sg:total)
Padraig Harrington (1.19 sg:wind vs. 0.512 sg:total)
Smylie Kaufman (1.046 sg:wind vs. 0.432 sg:total)
Alex Cejka (1.396 sg:wind vs. 0.784 sg:total)
Billy Hurley III (1.224 sg:wind vs. 0.65 sg:total)
Rory McIlroy (3.409 sg:wind vs. 2.853 sg:total)
Ryan Armour (1.354 sg:wind vs. 0.867 sg:total)
Luke Donald (1.604 sg:wind vs. 1.14 sg:total)
Sergio Garcia (2.912 sg:wind vs. 2.451 sg:total)
Chesson Hadley (1.309 sg:wind vs. 0.864 sg:total)

We already talked about Tway’s struggles on less-than-driver courses but he’s the exact opposite in the wind. It should be fun to see which angle wins out this week.

Rory is a controversial topic when it comes to wind performance. For whatever reason, people attribute Rory as a horrendous wind player but my tracking suggests he’s been one of the steadiest in the wind since the start of 2014. Maybe it’s because his baseline is so elite, anytime he looks human gives you pause. You can point out other reasons why he may not be a great fit this week, but the wind is not one that I’m worried about.

Par 70 Courses

With just two par 5s on the layout this week, steady grinders get a boost, which is often what we see on these par-70 lists.

The Top 10 Par 70 Specialists:

David Lingmerth (1.82 sg:par70 vs. 1.132 sg:total)
Kelly Kraft (0.865 sg:par70 vs. 0.192 sg:total)
Webb Simpson (2.375 sg:par70 vs. 1.78 sg:total)
Shane Lowry (2.065 sg:par70 vs. 1.5 sg:total)
Jim Furyk (2.275 sg:par70 vs. 1.734 sg:total)
Morgan Hoffmann (1.145 sg:par70 vs. 0.656 sg:total)
Martin Kaymer (2.127 sg:par70 vs. 1.641 sg:total)
Danny Lee (1.485 sg:par70 vs. 1.062 sg:total)
Graeme McDowell (1.513 sg:par70 vs. 1.112 sg:total)
Shawn Stefani (1.122 sg:par70 vs. 0.74 sg:total)

Article Image

Webb, Furyk, Kaymer, G-Mac… grinder central.

Lingmerth definitely pops in this regard, too. Since 2014, he’s picked up top 25s in 46% of his starts on par 70s. That is more than double his baseline on all other tracks, during that same time period (20%).

Baseline Performance

Like always, our last step is to weed out the huge longshots.

To do that we will eliminate anyone that falls outside the top 70 in Weighted Performance or anyone that hasn’t picked up a top 30 over the last four months. Not too strict, but definitely helps avoid the golfers that should be reserved as GPP deep flyers, not core plays:

Luke Donald
Morgan Hoffmann

The Specialists

Graeme McDowell
Ben Martin
Billy Horschel
Martin Kaymer
Jimmy Walker
Jamie Lovemark

The specialist this week is Graeme McDowell!

G-Mac has just two top 30s over the last four months but his play last week at Riviera was very promising. That is a course that typically doesn’t suit him but he found his way into a share of the 36-hole lead. Now the Orlando resident pegs it on a course that has yielded top 15s in five of his last seven trips.

Bermuda Benny Martin is back in his element this week.

Billy Ho is a Florida Gator who should also love a return home. He has back-to-back top 10s here.

Kaymer is on the record for loving how this course doesn’t let you bomb-and-gouge. You have to play smart and grind out a score. I like it when quotes match up with the numbers.

Walker gets a lot of attention for his West Coast wins but he has sneaky good numbers in Florida, once you account for field strength. He is 7-for-9 at this event, the Texan is certainly not scared of the wind.

The Cali native now calls Jupiter home so he’s sort of playing in a second-straight home game, despite traveling across the country. Has 11 career top 10s but still searching for his first win. Was T6 after Rounds 1 and 2 last week at the Genesis so his game might be rounding into shape.

Anti-Specialists

Scott Stallings
Keegan Bradley
Ben Crane
Derek Fathauer
Russell Henley

I don’t think anyone will have major problems fading the first four names but Henley might be popular this week. He’s a past champion here and also cites his love for bermuda. Despite that love, he’s actually in the slight negative when it comes to bermuda performance which tells us he’s not the most consistent option. I’d file Henley in the boom-or-bust folder, making him a good fade option if we think he’s going to be popular this week.

Super Simple Specialist Ratings

The goal of this article is to isolate course fit, to see who should outperform their baseline.

However, anyone with common sense knows that baseline talent (and current form) can’t be ignored when handicapping golf.

Combining Baseline Strokes Gained with Current Form and Specialist Rating, we get a Top 20 ranking that looks like this:

Rory McIlroy
Russell Knox
Jason Dufner
Daniel Berger
Ollie Schniederjans
Tommy Fleetwood
Martin Kaymer
Alex Noren
Patrick Reed
Kevin Kisner
Scott Piercy
Chris Kirk
Gary Woodland
Billy Horschel
Ben Martin
Tyrrell Hatton
Ian Poulter
Sergio Garcia
Adam Scott
Ryan Armour

A lot of international love on the list this week. Rory, Tommy, Kaymer, and Noren all crack the top 8 while Hatton, Poulter, Sergio, and Scott sneak into the top 25, as well.

Best of luck everyone!

Josh Culp (futureoffantasy)

Josh didn’t own a set of golf clubs until after college but his love for the game now grows exponentially. He uses in-depth statistical analysis while trying to avoid the landmines that come with using traditional, outdated PGA stats. He can be found elsewhere writing for Rotoworld and Future of Fantasy. He can be found on twitter @futureoffantasy.
