Searching for a Specialist: The Memorial Tournament

This week the TOUR heads to Jack’s Place [Nicklaus] for the Memorial Tournament.

It’s a stron, invite-only event with 120 golfers competing at Murifield Village Golf Club. The course has hosted this event for decades so we can dig into some history. In addition, we can also sort through the stats to see who might fit the course.

Reviewing last week’s specialist, Danny Lee finished strong to collect a top 15 in Fort Worth. Pretty good for a low-to-mid-salary option.

For the Memorial, let’s look at Performance on Bentgrass, Performance on Fast Greens, Performance against Strong Fields, Less-than-Driver Courses, and Performance in the Spring.

Here we go …

Performance on Bentgrass

For the second straight week, we have bentgrass putting surfaces.

That’s often the case as we hit the late Spring events.

The 10 Bentgrass Specialists:

David Lingmerth (1.432 sg:bentgrass vs. 0.961 sg:total)
Rickie Fowler (2.871 sg:bentgrass vs. 2.463 sg:total)
John Senden (1.216 sg:bentgrass vs. 0.815 sg:total)
Ernie Els (0.746 sg:bentgrass vs. 0.363 sg:total)
Danny Lee (1.371 sg:bentgrass vs. 1.014 sg:total)
Anirban Lahiri (1.245 sg:bentgrass vs. 0.929 sg:total)
Kevin Tway (1.266 sg:bentgrass vs. 0.971 sg:total)
Robert Streb (1.168 sg:bentgrass vs. 0.891 sg:total)
Russell Henley (1.74 sg:bentgrass vs. 1.468 sg:total)
Whee Kim (0.718 sg:bentgrass vs. 0.474 sg:total)

Quantity: At the top of the total strokes gained on bentgrass since 2014 we have Jordan Spieth, Rory McIlroy, Rickie Fowler, Henrik Stenson, and Dustin Johnson.

Lingmerth resides in Florida but does most of his heavy hitting on bentgrass courses.

Tiger Woods shows up near the bottom of the list but we shouldn’t let this alarm us. His sample is still trying to catch up since most of his starts since 2014 have been while injured. As for this year, he’s really popped on bermuda. He’s racked up plenty of wins at Firestone and here at Muirfield Village, so no reason to worry.

Performance on Fast Greens

Muirfield Village is up there on an annual basis when it comes to green speeds.

They usually set the target stimpmeter to 13 feet which is in Jimmy John’s level of fast.

Some other speedy greens these pros see come at Augusta National, the U.S. Open, Firestone CC, GC of Houston, Bay Hill, TPC Sawgrass, TPC Boston, East Lake, Riviera, and Quail Hollow.

The Top 10 Fast Green Specialists:

Xander Schauffele (2.191 sg:fast greens vs. 1.453 sg:total)
Sung Kang (1.385 sg:fast greens vs. 0.792 sg:total)
Kyle Stanley (1.814 sg:fast greens vs. 1.261 sg:total)
Bryson DeChambeau (1.934 sg:fast greens vs. 1.433 sg:total)
Peter Uihlein (1.755 sg:fast greens vs. 1.266 sg:total)
Charley Hoffman (2.066 sg:fast greens vs. 1.636 sg:total)
Nick Watney (1.455 sg:fast greens vs. 1.096 sg:total)
Scott Brown (1.148 sg:fast greens vs. 0.808 sg:total)
Martin Laird (1.656 sg:fast greens vs. 1.331 sg:total)
K.J. Choi (0.933 sg:fast greens vs. 0.617 sg:total)

As probably notice from the list above, performing well on fast greens is not necessarily correlated with putting prowess. It generally puts an emphasis on approach shots which is why we see some elite ball-strikers on the list above.

Quantity: Golfers with the most weighted strokes gained on fast greens since 2014 are Jordan Spieth, Rickie Fowler, Justin Rose, Dustin Johnson, and Jason Day.

Russell Knox is an interesting name here. He’s on the record saying that he prefers putting on fast greens but the numbers say otherwise. Maybe he’s due for a big week or maybe he was just trying to pump himself up with positive talk in the past.

Strong Field Performance

This week’s field is limited to just 120 golfers but a good 75 or so have winning pedigree over the last decade.

Unlike some of the bigger-field events, there isn’t a lot of fluff at the bottom here.

The Top 10 Strong Field Specialists:

John Senden (1.544 sg:strong vs. 0.815 sg:total)
Nick Watney (1.734 sg:strong vs. 1.096 sg:total)
Chesson Hadley (1.611 sg:strong vs. 1.008 sg:total)
Rory Sabbatini (1.414 sg:strong vs. 0.833 sg:total)
Xander Schauffele (2.023 sg:strong vs. 1.453 sg:total)
Daniel Summerhays (1.315 sg:strong vs. 0.897 sg:total)
Sung Kang (1.173 sg:strong vs. 0.792 sg:total)
Carl Pettersson (-0.009 sg:strong vs. -0.378 sg:total)
Scott Brown (1.122 sg:strong vs. 0.808 sg:total)
Robert Streb (1.183 sg:strong vs. 0.891 sg:total)

Quantity: Most weighted strokes gained against strong fields since 2014 are Dustin Johnson, Jordan Spieth, Rickie Fowler, Justin Rose, and Rory McIlroy.

Xander Schauffele is the most appealing name on the list above. Considering he stormed East Lake in his TOUR Championship debut, I’d say he’s not afraid of competing against the best golfers in the world.

Less-than-Driver Courses

There is plenty of trouble if you spray it here at Muirfield Village.

That generally leads to golfers clubbing down off the tee, here. Even on some of the par 5s you don’t need to pound driver.

The Top 10 LT Driver Specialists:

Tiger Woods (2.595 sg:less-than-driver vs. 1.548 sg:total)
Kiradech Aphibarnrat (1.804 sg:less-than-driver vs. 0.988 sg:total)
Wesley Bryan (1.427 sg:less-than-driver vs. 0.678 sg:total)
Jason Dufner (1.924 sg:less-than-driver vs. 1.524 sg:total)
J.J. Spaun (1.361 sg:less-than-driver vs. 0.978 sg:total)
Rod Pampling (0.391 sg:less-than-driver vs. 0.072 sg:total)
Ted Potter, Jr. (0.945 sg:less-than-driver vs. 0.631 sg:total)
Kevin Kisner (1.835 sg:less-than-driver vs. 1.524 sg:total)
Jamie Lovemark (1.752 sg:less-than-driver vs. 1.45 sg:total)
Kelly Kraft (0.628 sg:less-than-driver vs. 0.33 sg:total)

This list is loaded with golfers that thrive with short irons and/or wedges in hand. That’s usually vital on less-than-driver courses that force you to hit into particular landing zones off the tee.

Quantity: Most weighted strokes gained on less-than-driver courses since 2014 are Jordan Spieth, Kevin Kisner, Matt Kuchar, Jason Dufner, and Charles Howell III.

As you’d expect to see near the bottom, we have a barrel of big hitters like Kevin Tway, Hideki Matsuyama, Keith Mitchell, and Bubba Watson. I wouldn’t remove these golfers from your radar this week, but they will need to find other ways to score without pounding their driver hole after hole.

Performance in the Spring

This angle proved to be a good pointer last week as some golfers continue to play well in the Spring.

We have three more weeks of Spring golf so let’s see who pops here.

The Top 10 Spring Specialists:

Si Woo Kim (1.686 sg:spring vs. 0.792 sg:total)
Ted Potter, Jr. (1.396 sg:spring vs. 0.631 sg:total)
Grayson Murray (1.504 sg:spring vs. 0.845 sg:total)
Kevin Tway (1.528 sg:spring vs. 0.971 sg:total)
Byeong Hun An (2.039 sg:spring vs. 1.487 sg:total)
Abraham Ancer (1.043 sg:spring vs. 0.498 sg:total)
J.J. Spaun (1.487 sg:spring vs. 0.978 sg:total)
Martin Piller (0.551 sg:spring vs. 0.124 sg:total)
Charley Hoffman (2.025 sg:spring vs. 1.636 sg:total)
Bud Cauley (1.71 sg:spring vs. 1.33 sg:total)

Quantity: Most weighted strokes gained in the spring since 2014 are Matt Kuchar, Jordan Spieth, Charley Hoffman, Dustin Johnson, and Justin Rose.

Looking at Si Woo Kim, his top four finishes on TOUR have come between April and August. Whether it’s the climate, course conditions, or somethine else entirely, Kim seems to up his game during the warmer months.

Patton Kizzire checks in at the very bottom as he’s done most of his feasting in the fall.

Baseline Performance

We now have a list of 2 golfers that are positive in all five angles.

However, we can filter out one golfer, John Senden, due to his long-term baseline performance. The aging Aussie ranks 87th in long-term performance which makes him tough to trust as a core play this week. He might be worth a GPP dart or two as he tries to play his way back into form.

The Specialist

Xander Schauffele

The specialist this week is Xander Schauffele!

xander-schauffele-550x330

The San Diego State product will be making his tournament debut this week but that hasn’t stopped him from contending on the PGA TOUR. He’s posted seven career top 10s and all of them came during his tournament debut.

X has plenty of length off the tee but he’s proven that he doesn’t need the big stick to contend. The most recent example came a few weeks ago at THE PLAYERS where he finished runner-up on a course loaded with water, leading to less-than-driver off many tees. That will be the case again this week.

Looking at his putting specifically on bentgrass, he’s averaged 0.57 SGP on bentgrass over the course of his career. That is nearly 0.70 strokes better than his SGP on bermuda.

Schauffele has also popped with a top 15 at the WGC Bridgestone last year at Firestone CC. That is another Ohio course with fast, bentgrass greens which generally serves as a great pointer to Memorial success.

Super Simple Specialist Ratings

The goal of this article is to isolate course fit, to see who should outperform their baseline.

However, anyone with common sense knows that baseline talent (and current form) can’t be ignored when handicapping golf.

Combining Baseline Strokes Gained with Current Form and Specialist Rating, we get a Top 20 ranking that looks like this:

Matt Kuchar
Rickie Fowler
Charley Hoffman
Jordan Spieth
Marc Leishman
Bryson DeChambeau
Patrick Reed
Rory Mcilroy
Emiliano Grillo
Justin Rose
Patrick Cantlay
Xander Schauffele
Luke List
Branden Grace
Chesson Hadley
Byeong Hun An
Charl Schwartzel
Jason Day
Nick Watney
Adam Scott

This list suggests that a star-studded leaderboard should play out this week in Dublin, Ohio. Big names like Fowler, Spieth, and McIlroy show up in the top 10 but so do form players like Bryson and Grillo.

Best of luck everyone!

Below is a table with the full specialist data. Any fields with a 0 in them mean the sample size is not large enough. There is a minimum of 30 rounds to qualify for each angle.

The SG:TOTAL column is a baseline performance measure (since 2014). It is time-weighted so more recent results count for more than finishes from years ago.

HISTORY column is a weighted performance metric based on course history. I’ve made small adjustments for sample sizes but be sure to check on number of course rounds before blindly following this number.

FORM looks at the total strokes gained, adjusted to field strength, over the last 8 weeks (PGA TOUR and European Tour).

Josh Culp (futureoffantasy)

Josh didn’t own a set of golf clubs until after college but his love for the game now grows exponentially. He uses in-depth statistical analysis while trying to avoid the landmines that come with using traditional, outdated PGA stats. He can be found elsewhere writing for Rotoworld and Future of Fantasy. He can be found on twitter @futureoffantasy.
