Searching for a Specialist: The Northern Trust

The FedExCup Playoffs are set to get underway this week in New York. There is no course history to lean on as they take on a new course, so let’s look at some historical stats (since 2014) to see who should be a good course fit.

Grading out results from last week, Webb Simpson popped nicely as the specialist but pretty mediocre to sub-par beyond that. If you just plucked Simpson from the list, then it was a great week, but otherwise I’d grade it a C on the A to F scale.

Looking at this week’s course, we are going to look at Performance on Bent/Poa Greens, Par 70 Courses, Driver-Heavy Courses, Strong Field Events, and Summer Events.

Here we go …

Bentgrass/Poa Greens

According to the superintendent at the course, the greens are predominantly poa, but also feature bentgrass.

It’s really hard to have 100% bentgrass greens and also tough to have 100% poa greens. They are usually some kind of mixture to keep the greens playable through all weather scenarios.

Instead of isolating the stats to poa exclusively, this week I will take a look at performance on bentgrass OR poa annua. This covers all of the cold-weather courses, and excludes grainy grass types like bermuda or paspalum.

The Top 10 Bentgrass/Poa Specialists are:

Xander Schauffele (1.753 sg:bent/poa vs. 1.096 sg:total)
Kelly Kraft (0.79 sg:bent/poa vs. 0.26 sg:total)
Kevin Tway (0.685 sg:bent/poa vs. 0.256 sg:total)
Robert Garrigus (0.9 sg:bent/poa vs. 0.543 sg:total)
Tyrone Van Aswegen (0.582 sg:bent/poa vs. 0.291 sg:total)
Jon Rahm (2.449 sg:bent/poa vs. 2.169 sg:total)
Chris Stroud (0.971 sg:bent/poa vs. 0.73 sg:total)
Nick Watney (1.181 sg:bent/poa vs. 0.946 sg:total)
Derek Fathauer (0.6 sg:bent/poa vs. 0.366 sg:total)
Mackenzie Hughes (1.044 sg:bent/poa vs. 0.81 sg:total)

We see plenty of California/Arizona names on the list here. Hughes is a Canadian (familiar with cold-weather grasses) and also attended Kent State which is right where greens start to shift from bermuda to bent.

Derek Fathauer is an odd duckling on the list as he’s a Floridian who leans heavily on his putter.

Par 70 Courses

There are only two par 5s at Glen Oaks Club, which puts an emphasis on the shorter holes.

You can’t roller-coaster your way through the par 4s and then bail yourself out with four birdies on the par 5s. Those two extra scoring holes play a big part in course fit. Let’s see who doesn’t mind a par 70 test.

The 10 Par 70 Specialists:

Kelly Kraft (0.942 sg:par70 vs. 0.26 sg:total)
Xander Schauffele (1.764 sg:par70 vs. 1.096 sg:total)
Branden Grace (2.086 sg:par70 vs. 1.47 sg:total)
David Lingmerth (1.422 sg:par70 vs. 0.91 sg:total)
Webb Simpson (1.93 sg:par70 vs. 1.487 sg:total)
Jason Day (3.117 sg:par70 vs. 2.694 sg:total)
Chez Reavie (1.529 sg:par70 vs. 1.126 sg:total)
Tyrone Van Aswegen (0.676 sg:par70 vs. 0.291 sg:total)
Billy Horschel (1.642 sg:par70 vs. 1.261 sg:total)
Kevin Chappell (1.725 sg:par70 vs. 1.36 sg:total)

Kraft and Xander are both smaller samples at the top, so let’s not get carried away with their current numbers. Still promising.

The rest of the list is loaded with elite par-3 scorers. If you can pick up a shot or two on the par 3s over the course of the tournament, that goes a long way, especially on a par 70 layout where scoring holes are few and far between.

Strong Field Events

This week is the first event of the Playoffs, so you know the field is loaded with top-tier names. There are five golfers missing the event, but otherwise it’s the top 120 golfers this year. You better bring your A game.

The Top 10 Strong Field Specialists are:

Martin Flores (1.508 sg:strong vs. 0.651 sg:total)
Ollie Schniederjans (1.796 sg:strong vs. 1.13 sg:total)
Sung Kang (1.603 sg:strong vs. 1.053 sg:total)
Camilo Villegas (1.037 sg:strong vs. 0.661 sg:total)
Kyle Stanley (1.016 sg:strong vs. 0.691 sg:total)
Kevin Chappell (1.685 sg:strong vs. 1.36 sg:total)
Blayne Barber (0.9 sg:strong vs. 0.583 sg:total)
Derek Fathauer (0.642 sg:strong vs. 0.366 sg:total)
Rory Sabbatini (0.778 sg:strong vs. 0.511 sg:total)
David Lingmerth (1.175 sg:strong vs. 0.91 sg:total)

Not the star-studded list you may have expected. Par of that is due to baseline performance. Take Jordan Spieth for example. He plays in a few Texas events every year just for the fact it’s his home state. In most of those fields he is far and away the top golfer in the field. Anything outside the top 10 is a disappointment for him those weeks. However, when you head to a strong-field event, suddenly the margins are very thin at the top.

The other part is motivation. Sometimes the stars show up to these non-major strong field events without the full hunger to win. They are playing there seasons to win majors, if they play well in these events it is just a bonus. For some of the lesser names, it is a huge deal when they crack a strong field event, so we get their 100% full effort. The hard part is knowing who has that motivation, who might be looking ahead to the next leg of the Playoffs, or who might be fully satisfied with how their season has gone and is ready to regroup for the fall.

Driver-Heavy Courses

Listening to the superintendent speak about the course this week, he said the course is forgiving and that players won’t be losing balls this week. He said that golfers will be hitting drivers everywhere around here due to the forgiveness and length of the course.

Let’s see who shines when drivers are a key part of the course strategy.

The Top 10 Driver-Heavy Specialists:

Grayson Murray (1.8 sg:driver-heavy vs. 0.746 sg:total)
Brandon Hagy (1.389 sg:driver-heavy vs. 0.693 sg:total)
Rickie Fowler (2.76 sg:driver-heavy vs. 2.217 sg:total)
Kevin Tway (0.789 sg:driver-heavy vs. 0.256 sg:total)
Justin Thomas (2.302 sg:driver-heavy vs. 1.778 sg:total)
Xander Schauffele (1.605 sg:driver-heavy vs. 1.096 sg:total)
Brian Gay (0.709 sg:driver-heavy vs. 0.201 sg:total)
Harris English (1.71 sg:driver-heavy vs. 1.258 sg:total)
Hudson Swafford (1.251 sg:driver-heavy vs. 0.802 sg:total)
Kyle Stanley (1.092 sg:driver-heavy vs. 0.691 sg:total)

Some MAJOR FIREPOWER on this list…and then Brian Gay.

Guys like Murray, Hagy, Tway, and Thomas are going to be near the top of driving distance leaderboards their entire careers. It makes sense they would enjoy a course that lets them unleash their favorite weapon.

On the flip side, guys like Wes Bryan, Rory Sabbatini, Cam Smith, and Blayne Barber are near the bottom of this list. None of them have the length to keep up with the big boys so they are forced to go lights out on approach and/or get hot with the short game. That is much less reliable, which explains their low expectations on a course like this.

Performance in the Summer

There are a lot of little elements that go into summer performance.

First is the type of grasses often played in the summer. We often ditch the Florida bermuda and instead head north for bentgrass and/or poa.

In addition, even the same grass types can react differently from May compared to August.

Then you add in the heat and humidity, and some golfers just feel more comfortable this time of year.

The Top 10 Summer Specialists:

Si Woo Kim (1.382 sg:summer vs. 0.767 sg:total)
Robert Garrigus (1.114 sg:summer vs. 0.543 sg:total)
Ollie Schniederjans (1.665 sg:summer vs. 1.13 sg:total)
Henrik Stenson (3.105 sg:summer vs. 2.572 sg:total)
Kelly Kraft (0.785 sg:summer vs. 0.26 sg:total)
Geoff Ogilvy (0.936 sg:summer vs. 0.472 sg:total)
Rickie Fowler (2.665 sg:summer vs. 2.217 sg:total)
Jason Day (3.117 sg:summer vs. 2.694 sg:total)
C.T. Pan (1.028 sg:summer vs. 0.617 sg:total)
J.J. Henry (0.543 sg:summer vs. 0.148 sg:total)

Looking at summer starts since 2014, Jason Day leads the way with top-20 worthy starts (20-of-28 starts). As for top-5 worthy finishes, Rickie Fowler is the man there (14-of-27 summer starts).

Baseline Performance

We’ve highlighted our top 10 for each angle and after the dust settles we have 10 golfers that remained positive in ALL FIVE angles.

The following names should be a good course fit, but fall outside the top 70 in terms of baseline strokes gained or strokes gained over the last 10 weeks (FORM).

Nick Watney
David Lingmerth
Kyle Stanley
J.J. Henry

Lingmerth and Stanley are both very appealing here in tournaments. Watney could definitely pop as well, a week after letting owners down.

Our specialist this week is Ollie Schniederjans!

Fresh off a near-win in North Carolina, the hatless hero grades out as a great course fit this week. Will he be able to use last week’s runner-up finish as a stepping stool to the winner’s circle?

After that we have golfers that are confident with driver in hand (Grace, Chez, Casey, and Kuchar)…and then Streb who usually falls into that category but has seen his Off-the-Tee play struggle this season.

The Anti-Specialists

The specialists above are positive in all five angles, but which golfers are the opposite and show a poor course fit?

Pat Perez
Luke List
Byeong Hun An
Brendan Steele
Kevin Na
Graham DeLaet
Justin Rose

Plenty of upside on this list, but if you’re looking for potential fades, these are worthy options.

Best of luck everyone!

Below is a table with the full specialist data. Any fields with a 0 in them mean the sample size is not large enough. There is a minimum of 25 rounds to qualify for each angle.

The SG:Total column is a baseline performance measure (since 2014),

Josh Culp (futureoffantasy)

Josh didn’t own a set of golf clubs until after college but his love for the game now grows exponentially. He uses in-depth statistical analysis while trying to avoid the landmines that come with using traditional, outdated PGA stats. He can be found elsewhere writing for Rotoworld and Future of Fantasy. He can be found on twitter @futureoffantasy.
