Searching for a Specialist: The Northern Trust

Turning our attention to the FedExCup Playoffs, we head to New Jersey for this week’s Northern Trust.

Don’t forget to yell that whenever mentioning the tournament title this week, so that we don’t confuse it with the Northern Trust Open which was previously played at Riviera.

Reviewing last week, our specialists were Billy Horschel and Chris Kirk. Both of them outperformed expectations with T11 finishes. Let’s keep it rolling as we head to Jersey!

This week we look at performance on Poa/Bent Greens, Long Courses, Strong Field Events, Fast Greens, and Performance in the Summer.

The first three angles are basically exact opposites of last week, so guys like Horschel and Kirk no longer look as appealing. Could be a good week to fade some of the guys that earned top 20s last week in Greensboro.

NOTE: The HISTORY column in the bottom table will be showing performance at this event, not at Ridgewood specifically since they’ve only played here once since 2014 which is when all the other data points started tracking.

Here we go …

Bent/Poa Greens

Ridgewood Country Club had their greens listed as poa annua during the 2008 and 2010 editions. Then in 2014 they were listed as bentgrass.

After reaching out to the grounds team at Ridgewood, they’ve clarified that “they’ve always been poa annua with about 10% of bent in them.”

Historically, performance on bentgrass has correlated well with Ridgewood performance, but we also saw a good chunk of top performers who have ties to Cali which would indicate comfort on poa.

For this angle, we will look at performance on BENTGRASS or POA ANNUA as they usually go hand-in-hand, so when the samples are small, I tend to lead toward the blend.

The 10 Bent/Poa Specialists:

Bronson Burgoon (1.105 sg:bent/poa vs. 0.785 sg:total)
Tyler Duncan (0.981 sg:bent/poa vs. 0.668 sg:total)
Joel Dahmen (1.309 sg:bent/poa vs. 1.024 sg:total)
Scott Stallings (1.059 sg:bent/poa vs. 0.792 sg:total)
Whee Kim (0.819 sg:bent/poa vs. 0.554 sg:total)
Peter Uihlein (1.571 sg:bent/poa vs. 1.326 sg:total)
Tony Finau (2.168 sg:bent/poa vs. 1.931 sg:total)
Anirban Lahiri (1.304 sg:bent/poa vs. 1.072 sg:total)
Brandon Harkins (1.401 sg:bent/poa vs. 1.172 sg:total)
Brooks Koepka (2.47 sg:bent/poa vs. 2.245 sg:total)

matt-kuchar-550x330

Quantity: The golfers that have the most strokes gained on bent/poa since 2014 are Dustin Johnson, Jordan Spieth, Jason Day, Tony Finau, and Matt Kuchar.

Sometimes we see these lists point us to a particular region of the country, but this list is pretty widespread in terms of origins, current place of residence, and where they attended school.

This list definitely leans in the direction of ball-strikers who can’t really putt, but the last time we were at Ridgewood, it turned into a short-game competition. Hmmmm.

Long Courses

We were at a very short layout last week in Greensboro, but this week we have a beast of course, once you adjust to a hole-by-hole basis or take a par-adjusted view of the yardage.

Sometimes length is a big advantage on these lengthy layouts, but sometimes scrambling is a bigger advantage since there will be longer approaches which lead to more scrambling opportunities.

The Top 10 Long Course Specialists:

Ryan Palmer (1.898 sg:long vs. 1.271 sg:total)
Sung Kang (1.3 sg:long vs. 0.759 sg:total)
Andrew Landry (1.141 sg:long vs. 0.721 sg:total)
Jason Kokrak (1.682 sg:long vs. 1.275 sg:total)
Vaughn Taylor (1.398 sg:long vs. 0.996 sg:total)
Trey Mullinax (1.179 sg:long vs. 0.797 sg:total)
Patrick Cantlay (2.673 sg:long vs. 2.298 sg:total)
Sean O’Hair (1.317 sg:long vs. 0.947 sg:total)
Brooks Koepka (2.602 sg:long vs. 2.245 sg:total)
J.T. Poston (1.229 sg:long vs. 0.883 sg:total)

Quantity: Golfers with the most weighted strokes gained on long courses since 2014 are Dustin Johnson, Jason Day, Justin Rose, Paul Casey, and Patrick Reed.

Looking at that top 5 list of QUANTITY, it’s a lot of big hitters, but someone like Reed is a perfect example of how you can use short-game skills to thrive on longer layouts.

There are five golfers who are more than half a shot worse per round when playing on long courses: Michael Kim, Ted Potter, Jr., Tyler Duncan, Byeong Hun An, and Richy Werenski.

Strong Fields

This is the third straight angle that goes against our search last week at the Wyndham.

Kicking off the Playoffs this week, we have 120 golfers that have played some of the best golf on the planet in 2018.

The Top 10 Strong Field Specialists:

Tom Hoge (1.229 sg:strong vs. 0.694 sg:total)
Rory Sabbatini (1.352 sg:strong vs. 0.838 sg:total)
Sam Saunders (1.024 sg:strong vs. 0.644 sg:total)
Kyle Stanley (1.732 sg:strong vs. 1.353 sg:total)
Xander Schauffele (1.88 sg:strong vs. 1.511 sg:total)
Chesson Hadley (1.342 sg:strong vs. 0.997 sg:total)
Harold Varner III (1.265 sg:strong vs. 0.93 sg:total)
Peter Uihlein (1.654 sg:strong vs. 1.326 sg:total)
Bryson DeChambeau (1.901 sg:strong vs. 1.573 sg:total)
Martin Laird (1.591 sg:strong vs. 1.322 sg:total)

Quantity: Most weighted strokes gained against strong fields since 2014 are Dustin Johnson, Jordan Spieth, Justin Rose, Jason Day, and Paul Casey.

There are a few turds at the bottom of the punch bowl that have really struggled against stronger fields, Ryan Blaum and Andrew Landry. Landry popped at Oakmont, but other than that, most of his damage has been against weaker competition.

Fast Greens

This course is set to play pretty soft this week, but the greens are still expected to be on the fast side.

During the 2008 edition, Kenny Perry mentioned the greens being faster than they look.

In 2010 Tiger said “but still the greens are really fast.”

In 2014, Mahan said “the greens are big enough to where you can hit a lot of greens and give yourself some good looks, but you have to have good speed because they are running pretty fast.”

The Top 10 Fast Greens Specialists:

Sung Kang (1.531 sg:fast greens vs. 0.759 sg:total)
Peter Uihlein (2.062 sg:fast greens vs. 1.326 sg:total)
Kyle Stanley (2.069 sg:fast greens vs. 1.353 sg:total)
Harold Varner III (1.524 sg:fast greens vs. 0.93 sg:total)
Ian Poulter (2.093 sg:fast greens vs. 1.573 sg:total)
Bryson DeChambeau (2.072 sg:fast greens vs. 1.573 sg:total)
Chesson Hadley (1.45 sg:fast greens vs. 0.997 sg:total)
Brian Gay (1.429 sg:fast greens vs. 1.05 sg:total)
Beau Hossler (1.71 sg:fast greens vs. 1.342 sg:total)
Luke List (1.969 sg:fast greens vs. 1.601 sg:total)

Quantity: Most weighted strokes gained on fast greens since 2014 are Justin Thomas, Dustin Johnson, Jordan Spieth, Justin Rose, and Matt Kuchar

Most of this list populated with golfers that are great ball-strikers but really struggle with the putter. Perhaps they benefit from sticking their approaches closer to prevent having to putt as much. However, there are some elite putters like Brian Gay and Beau Hossler on the list. There are a few ways to get the job done on quick greens.

Summer Season

During these summer months we see a lot of bentgrass greens, warm weather, and plenty of big events.

The Top 10 Summer Specialists:

Xander Schauffele (2.129 sg:summer vs. 1.511 sg:total)
Si Woo Kim (1.339 sg:summer vs. 0.8 sg:total)
Grayson Murray (1.231 sg:summer vs. 0.709 sg:total)
Charl Schwartzel (2.023 sg:summer vs. 1.54 sg:total)
Harold Varner III (1.41 sg:summer vs. 0.93 sg:total)
Richy Werenski (1.068 sg:summer vs. 0.65 sg:total)
Kelly Kraft (0.84 sg:summer vs. 0.459 sg:total)
Jason Day (3.121 sg:summer vs. 2.808 sg:total)
Austin Cook (1.823 sg:summer vs. 1.535 sg:total)
Ryan Blaum (1.078 sg:summer vs. 0.799 sg:total)

Quantity: Most weighted strokes gained on fast greens since 2014 are Jason Day, Jordan Spieth, Dustin Johnson, Matt Kuchar, and Paul Casey.

Jason Day is the one that really pops here. As you can see from the list above, his adjusted performance per round in the summer is more than 3 shots better than a TOUR-average golfer. Could it be that the warmer mornings allow his back a bit more flexibility and take away some of his health issues? Or does he just like the heat? Or does he like softer, bentgrass greens? It could be a combination of all of them.

Baseline Performance

We now have a list of six golfers that are positive in all of the angles above.

However, there are three golfers that don’t live up to the bill when it comes to long-term performance (Kang) or recent form (Kang, Casey, Bubba).

It’s important to remember that form is relative to the field, so while none of them have form that is horrendous, it is outside the top 70 in this field when looking at total performance over the last 8 weeks.

Sung Kang
Paul Casey
Bubba Watson

The Specialist

Xander Schauffele
Ryan Palmer
Zach Johnson

The specialist this week is Xander Schauffele!

xander-schauffele-550x330

The X-Man is making his course debut this week, but it could be love at first sight, based on these angles we’ve looked at.

He’s proven to be a big-game hunter with top 10s at the U.S. Open (x2), The Open, THE PLAYERS, and the TOUR Championship.

Ryan Palmer ranks first in the field when it comes to long course performance over baseline. He definitely falls into the bomber category when looking at driving distance versus the field but he also does his best proximity (compared to the field) as the approach shots get longer.

Lastly, we have Zach Johnson who should really like this three-pack of par 5s at Ridgewood. They aren’t really reachable in two except for the longest of hitters. ZJ is used to playing par 5s as three-shoters anyway, so he will be quite comfy attacking the par 5s with wedges. He’s posted top 25s in each of his last two trips to Ridgewood.

The Anti-Specialists

We have a few golfers that qualify as specialists this week but who does the opposite, grading out negatively in all of the angles?

Patton Kizzire
Brice Garnett
Rafa Cabrera Bello
Byeong Hun An
Charles Howell III
Nick Taylor
Brendan Steele
Billy Horschel
Brian Harman
Webb Simpson
Hideki Matsuyama
Phil Mickelson
Jason Dufner
Pat Perez
Russell Knox
Chez Reavie

Before we blindly fade, we should look at the severity of poor course fit in the table below.

Personally, I will be fading all of these golfers except for Mickelson and Hideki.

Super Simple Specialist Ratings

The goal of this article is to isolate course fit, to see who should outperform their baseline.

However, anyone with common sense knows that baseline talent (and current form) can’t be ignored when handicapping golf.

Combining Baseline Strokes Gained with Current Form and Specialist Rating, we get a Top 20 ranking that looks like this:

Jon Rahm
Justin Thomas
Dustin Johnson
Brooks Koepka
Francesco Molinari
Patrick Cantlay
Jason Day
Tony Finau
Zach Johnson
Justin Rose
Matt Kuchar
Tommy Fleetwood
Patrick Reed
Adam Scott
Tyrrell Hatton
Webb Simpson
Tiger Woods
Kevin Na
Jordan Spieth
Ian Poulter
Paul Casey

It’s actually a list of 21 this week with Poulter and Casey tied at #20.

Overall, it would be a very chalky week if the leaderboard ended up like this with Rahm, JT, and DJ battling for the win.

Best of luck everyone!

Below is a table with the full specialist data. Any fields with a 0 in them mean the sample size is not large enough. There is a minimum of 30 rounds to qualify for each angle.

The SG:TOTAL column is a baseline performance measure (since 2014). It is time-weighted so more recent results count for more than finishes from years ago.

HISTORY column is a weighted performance metric based on course history. I’ve made small adjustments for sample sizes but be sure to check on number of course rounds before blindly following this number.

FORM looks at the total strokes gained, adjusted to field strength, over the last 8 weeks (PGA TOUR and European Tour).

SIMPLE RATING looks at SGTotal, FORM, and SPECIALIST RATING to create a simple rating that includes course fit but doesn’t overweight it.

Josh Culp (futureoffantasy)

Josh didn’t own a set of golf clubs until after college but his love for the game now grows exponentially. He uses in-depth statistical analysis while trying to avoid the landmines that come with using traditional, outdated PGA stats. He can be found elsewhere writing for Rotoworld and Future of Fantasy. He can be found on twitter @futureoffantasy.
