Searching for a Specialist: The Open Championship

rotogrinders_user_22704

Welcome to another week of specialist searching.

Looking at past results, we are going to find out who fits the course at Royal Birkdale for The 146th Open. Checking into our results from last week, we had two perform well (ZJ and Stroud) while two flopped (Ogilvy and Cejka). Michael Kim got magnetized to the middle of the pack. Not a home run week but not a strikeout week, either.

Looking at this week’s course, we are going to see quite the switchup from our previous few events. First we will have a look at Performance on Links Courses and then look at Performance in Cold Weather, Performance in Majors, Performance on Coastal Courses, Performance in the Wind, Performance on Bentgrass Greens, and Less-than-Driver Courses.

We are loading up plenty of angles this week as we try to find a pure specialist. Here we go …

Links Golf

We don’t get many chances to use this angle, but it’s always extremely relevant when it comes into play.

Last time it was used (Erin Hills), the top specialist (Brooks) pulled through, and he maintains a spot at the top of the list below.

The Top 10 Links Specialists are:

Brooks Koepka (3.258 sg:links vs. 1.922 sg:total)
Brandt Snedeker (2.6 sg:links vs. 1.658 sg:total)
Branden Grace (2.287 sg:links vs. 1.445 sg:total)
Martin Kaymer (2.288 sg:links vs. 1.461 sg:total)
J.B. Holmes (2.261 sg:links vs. 1.438 sg:total)
Padraig Harrington (1.118 sg:links vs. 0.302 sg:total)
Robert Streb (1.938 sg:links vs. 1.144 sg:total)
Steve Stricker (2.456 sg:links vs. 1.711 sg:total)
Pat Perez (1.882 sg:links vs. 1.159 sg:total)
Jordan Spieth (3.304 sg:links vs. 2.601 sg:total)

Paddy Harrington is the defending champion at this week’s venue. He is a two-time champ at The Open, and it’s largely due to his love of links golf.

Charley Hoffman showed up at Erin Hills but he’s historically been pretty dreadful on traditional links layouts. He is someone I will happily leave off my target list given his performance on links is nearly two strokes worse (per round) when playing on links layouts.

Performance in Cold Weather

The current forecast calls for temperatures in the upper 50s and low 60s throughout the week.

That is the perfect forecast for our cold weather angle, which looks at performance in sub-70 weather.

The 10 Cold Weather Specialists:

William McGirt (1.964 sg:cold weather vs. 1.08 sg:total)
Martin Laird (1.707 sg:cold weather vs. 1.051 sg:total)
Pat Perez (1.727 sg:cold weather vs. 1.159 sg:total)
J.B. Holmes (2.004 sg:cold weather vs. 1.438 sg:total)
Adam Scott (2.898 sg:cold weather vs. 2.391 sg:total)
Henrik Stenson (2.984 sg:cold weather vs. 2.504 sg:total)
Jon Rahm (2.712 sg:cold weather vs. 2.246 sg:total)
Sergio Garcia (2.88 sg:cold weather vs. 2.476 sg:total)
Marc Leishman (2.01 sg:cold weather vs. 1.607 sg:total)
Russell Knox (1.819 sg:cold weather vs. 1.454 sg:total)

Given the climate in the area that hosts this event, it is no surprise that many of the names above also have stellar Open track records.

Looking at the bottom of the list, I see an interesting trio: Kevin Kisner, Brian Harman, and Russell Henley. All three of them are Georgia Bulldogs, used to playing in some extreme heat. Of course that doesn’t mean they CAN’T perform in the cold, they are just more suited for playing on a nice, warm summer day in the South.

Performance in Majors

A lot of golfers plan their entire schedule around the majors. They want to peak at just the right times. In theory, that would show up in this angle.

Some golfers don’t spend much time on their schedule, but still bring their A game when it comes to the biggest events. They would also show up on this list.

The Top 10 Major Specialists:

Brooks Koepka (3.004 sg:majors vs. 1.922 sg:total)
Steve Stricker (2.629 sg:majors vs. 1.711 sg:total)
Phil Mickelson (2.763 sg:majors vs. 1.996 sg:total)
Darren Clarke (-0.492 sg:majors vs. -1.172 sg:total)
Kevin Chappell (1.958 sg:majors vs. 1.321 sg:total)
Justin Rose (3.055 sg:majors vs. 2.419 sg:total)
Jordan Spieth (3.225 sg:majors vs. 2.601 sg:total)
Brandt Snedeker (2.271 sg:majors vs. 1.658 sg:total)
Louis Oosthuizen (2.298 sg:majors vs. 1.688 sg:total)
Branden Grace (2.035 sg:majors vs. 1.445 sg:total)

Other than Darren Clarke, this is a pretty elite list.

A little farther down the list (but still positive) is Patrick Reed and Bill Haas. I point this out because they both get a lot of flak for their performance in majors. That is mostly due to them finishing outside the top 10. However, when you adjust for strength of field, they are both actually consistently playing above their baseline, they just haven’t had the HUGE week in a major. YET.

Coastal Courses

While most traditional links courses will be played right along the seaside, there are still plenty of non-links courses that are also played by the coast.

Playing by the coast generally means the course is exposed to the wind and the winds are often “heavier” coming right off a big body of water.

Let’s see who handles the elements and thrives on the coast…

The Top 10 Coastal Specialists:

Branden Grace (2.356 sg:coastal vs. 1.445 sg:total)
Gary Woodland (2.227 sg:coastal vs. 1.508 sg:total)
Louis Oosthuizen (2.358 sg:coastal vs. 1.688 sg:total)
David Duval (-0.641 sg:coastal vs. -1.3 sg:total)
Cameron Smith (1.458 sg:coastal vs. 0.831 sg:total)
John Daly (-0.558 sg:coastal vs. -1.184 sg:total)
Charl Schwartzel (2.342 sg:coastal vs. 1.725 sg:total)
Jordan Spieth (3.113 sg:coastal vs. 2.601 sg:total)
Tony Finau (2.014 sg:coastal vs. 1.509 sg:total)
Padraig Harrington (0.797 sg:coastal vs. 0.302 sg:total)

It looks like South Africans love playing by the coast (Grace, Oosthy, Charl).

If we want to believe that narrative then other South Africans in the field we could target include: Dylan Frittelli, Brandon Stone, Ernie Els, Jbe’ Kruger, Darren Fichardt, and Shaun Norris. Not sure that has the firepower to bring home the Milly this week, but you could make a fun narrative team out of it.

Performance in the Wind

We’ve looked at Links Golf and Coastal Courses, so looking at performance in the Wind is something that goes hand-in-hand with those.

Battling the elements generally means having the ability to flight it low when needed but also sky it when you get a favorable lull in wind. You need to be able to judge wind direction and wind speed to determine the ideal shot shape to play. There are a lot of minute details that goes into playing well in the wind, so let’s see who shine here…

The Top 10 Wind Specialists:

Danny Willett (1.791 sg:wind vs. 1.12 sg:total)
Pat Perez (1.698 sg:wind vs. 1.159 sg:total)
Padraig Harrington (0.838 sg:wind vs. 0.302 sg:total)
Jason Day (3.194 sg:wind vs. 2.704 sg:total)
J.B. Holmes (1.836 sg:wind vs. 1.438 sg:total)
Kevin Chappell (1.704 sg:wind vs. 1.321 sg:total)
Bill Haas (2.078 sg:wind vs. 1.728 sg:total)
Daniel Berger (1.937 sg:wind vs. 1.627 sg:total)
Charles Howell III (1.646 sg:wind vs. 1.338 sg:total)
Kyle Stanley (1.013 sg:wind vs. 0.715 sg:total)

What do you know? Another angle where Paddy shines. It’s no wonder he’s the defending champ here.

Sometimes it comes down to consistency. Golfers like Zach Johnson and Brendan Steele are both at the bottom of the list, but they’ve both won tournaments in windy conditions before. If you’re looking for a consistent wind performer, though, they don’t fit the bill.

Bentgrass Greens

While this week’s greens are not the same bentgrass as you’d find in American (they are a fescue/bent mix) the bentgrass angle still shows a nice correlation to success at The Open.

Basically, we are looking for golfers that aren’t huge bermuda specialists.

The Top 10 Bentgrass Specialists are:

Xander Schauffele (2.288 sg:bentgrass vs. 1.052 sg:total)
Thorbjorn Olesen (0.898 sg:bentgrass vs. 0.146 sg:total)
Darren Clarke (-0.545 sg:bentgrass vs. -1.172 sg:total)
Ernie Els (0.987 sg:bentgrass vs. 0.451 sg:total)
Matthew Fitzpatrick (1.69 sg:bentgrass vs. 1.252 sg:total)
Rickie Fowler (2.56 sg:bentgrass vs. 2.173 sg:total)
Russell Henley (1.56 sg:bentgrass vs. 1.238 sg:total)
Soren Kjeldsen (1.265 sg:bentgrass vs. 0.969 sg:total)
Martin Kaymer (1.72 sg:bentgrass vs. 1.461 sg:total)
Ian Poulter (1.452 sg:bentgrass vs. 1.199 sg:total)

When the Euro Tour plays in Europe, it’s generally on bentgrass/poa or bentgrass/fescue mixes. No surprise that we see a lot of Euro Tour players near the top of this list, like Soren, Fitz, Kaymer, Poulter, Clarke, Thorbjorn, etc.

Looking at the bottom of this list, there are a few names that don’t look great on bentgrass, but nobody looks fade worthy.

Less-than-Driver Courses

As is the case with many course in The Open rota, Royal Birkdale is a course where you don’t need many drivers.

Realistically, this is one of those weeks where some golfers could legitimately remove the driver from their golf bag and be better off for it.

Back in 2008, Sergio said this about Royal Birkdale, “The good thing about it is I feel like on these kind of courses you don’t have to just get there and just bang it. You have to hit different shots off the tee.”

Ernie Els would later add, “A lot of doglegs on the course. You’ve got to position your tee shots, and really your second shots are really going to be the scoring club this week.”

The Top 10 Less-than-Driver Specialists are:

Wesley Bryan (2.147 sg:less-than-driver vs. 0.998 sg:total)
Kevin Na (2.178 sg:less-than-driver vs. 1.658 sg:total)
Kevin Kisner (1.801 sg:less-than-driver vs. 1.348 sg:total)
Bill Haas (2.157 sg:less-than-driver vs. 1.728 sg:total)
Padraig Harrington (0.698 sg:less-than-driver vs. 0.302 sg:total)
Jamie Lovemark (1.441 sg:less-than-driver vs. 1.048 sg:total)
Jhonattan Vegas (1.095 sg:less-than-driver vs. 0.726 sg:total)
Cameron Smith (1.196 sg:less-than-driver vs. 0.831 sg:total)
Rickie Fowler (2.501 sg:less-than-driver vs. 2.173 sg:total)
Jason Dufner (1.8 sg:less-than-driver vs. 1.477 sg:total)

Second-shot courses put an emphasis on approach play which shows up big time in the list above. If the wind picks up then sometimes it comes down to course management and/or short game. That also shows up in the list above.

Bubba Watson is on the wrong end of his list. Adding to the fact that he hates links golf, he also prefers to pound driver after driver. If he picks this week to return to form, it would really be a shock.

Baseline Performance

In our search for a specialist we want to find a good course fit. At the same time, we don’t want to rely on a career-week just to find a top 30. Let’s remove any golfers that fall below the average baseline performance for this week’s field:

Ernie Els

Big Ern is clearly a good course fit on any Open Championship course (2 WINS and five other podiums at The Open). However, his baseline performance has dipped a bit too low at this point in his career. That reserves him to GPPs only.

The Specialist

jordan-spieth-300x200

Our specialist this week is Jordan Spieth

Most weeks we see 3-to-7 specialists fit the bill, but this week we’ve narrowed it down to one man.

Spieth also finds a way to peak just in time for major championships. He’s always enjoyed the challenges that comes with links courses.

He’s won at Chambers Bay and won at Pebble Beach. He also has a close call in The Open, finishing T4 in the 2015 edition. Looking at his last 11 starts on links-style tracks, his worst finish is a T36 (2014 Open Championship).

If we need one man to build our lineups around this week, Spieth looks to be a great option.

The Anti-Specialists

The specialists above are positive in all seven angles, but which golfers are the opposite and show a poor course fit?

NONE

Nobody is negative in all seven angles, but Bubba Watson and Charley Hoffman both grade out as terrifyingly bad course fits. They would be my recommended fades.

Best of luck everyone!

Below is a table with the full specialist data. Any fields with a 0 in them mean the sample size is not large enough. There is a minimum of 25 rounds to qualify for each angle.

The SG:Total column is a baseline performance measure (since 2014),

Form looks at the performance over the last 10 weeks (PGA & Euro).

Josh Culp (futureoffantasy)

Josh didn’t own a set of golf clubs until after college but his love for the game now grows exponentially. He uses in-depth statistical analysis while trying to avoid the landmines that come with using traditional, outdated PGA stats. He can be found elsewhere writing for Rotoworld and Future of Fantasy. He can be found on twitter @futureoffantasy.
