Searching for a Specialist: THE PLAYERS Championship

Article Image

Welcome to this week’s specialist search. We will be heading to PGA TOUR headquarters for this one.

TPC Sawgrass is a well-known layout, but it’s also known to sometimes be unkind to star players. Let’s see if we can find some specialists to overcome the difficult Pete Dye design.

The four angles we are going to look at this week are Strong Field Events, Pete Dye Courses, TPC Courses, and a new one (Hot Weather Specialists).

Let’s go …

Strong Field Events

You can’t earn the tag of “fifth major” without attracting a strong field.

Thanks to the enormous purse offered this week, the games biggest stars rarely pass this week up. That means we need to find golfers that play their best golf against fierce competition.

The Top 10 Strong Field Specialists are:

Sung Kang (1.819 sg:strong vs. 1.026 sg:total)
Ernie Els (0.87 sg:strong vs. 0.417 sg:total)
K.J. Choi (1.039 sg:strong vs. 0.631 sg:total)
Steve Stricker (1.944 sg:strong vs. 1.564 sg:total)
David Hearn (1.266 sg:strong vs. 0.893 sg:total)
Kevin Chappell (1.639 sg:strong vs. 1.272 sg:total)
Adam Hadwin (1.525 sg:strong vs. 1.158 sg:total)
Derek Fathauer (0.739 sg:strong vs. 0.384 sg:total)
Matthew Fitzpatrick (1.549 sg:strong vs. 1.232 sg:total)
Daniel Berger (1.876 sg:strong vs. 1.564 sg:total)

Stricker is the perfect example of a strong-field specialist. For years he would play a limited schedule and play a few tuneup events just to keep him sharp for the big tournaments.

Kevin Chappell is the other type of strong-field specialist. For whatever reason, the big events bring out the best in his game. Sometimes that has to do with the type of courses played in big events (typically harder).

Pete Dye Courses

There are very few, if any, course architects more well-known than Pete Dye.

He’s known for his intimidation factors, you could perhaps call him an illusionist. He’ll make you think the fairway is small when in actually it’s huge, and vice-versa.

Turtleback greens are another staple of many of his designs, forcing you to hit great approach shots or have tremendous scrambling skills to walk away unharmed.

The 10 Pete Dye Specialists:

Matt Kuchar (2.988 sg:pete dye vs. 2.054 sg:total)
Luke Donald (1.986 sg:pete dye vs. 1.14 sg:total)
Branden Grace (2.26 sg:pete dye vs. 1.423 sg:total)
Chris Kirk (1.946 sg:pete dye vs. 1.228 sg:total)
Boo Weekley (1.108 sg:pete dye vs. 0.412 sg:total)
K.J. Choi (1.309 sg:pete dye vs. 0.631 sg:total)
Jhonattan Vegas (1.432 sg:pete dye vs. 0.759 sg:total)
Jerry Kelly (1.578 sg:pete dye vs. 0.966 sg:total)
Bryce Molder (1.28 sg:pete dye vs. 0.684 sg:total)
David Hearn (1.477 sg:pete dye vs. 0.893 sg:total)

On top of play style, sometimes it comes down to demeanor on the course. Kuchar and Donald are two of the most laid-back personalities on the course. They don’t throw a fit when they get an unlucky bounce, so perhaps that helps them on courses that are trickier than most.

Golfers that are more than half-a-shot worse (per round) on Pete Dye courses since 2014 include: Martin Laird, Patrick Reed, Tony Finau, Jason Bohn, John Huh, Ben Crane, Kyle Stanley, James Hahn, Harris English, Sean O’Hair, Vaughn Taylor, and Jonas Blixt. Of course these are not HUGE sample sizes, but I’d rather limit my list of targets and just avoid this entire list.

TPC Courses

Sawgrass is the original TPC course. A network of courses that has grown over the years, but many of them share some similarities when it comes to course setup, course layout, and course maintenance practices.

The Top 10 TPC Specialists:

Boo Weekley (1.231 sg:TPC vs. 0.412 sg:total)
Hideki Matsuyama (2.967 sg:TPC vs. 2.189 sg:total)
Daniel Berger (2.306 sg:TPC vs. 1.564 sg:total)
Rod Pampling (0.881 sg:TPC vs. 0.177 sg:total)
Michael Kim (1.39 sg:TPC vs. 0.686 sg:total)
Webb Simpson (2.041 sg:TPC vs. 1.346 sg:total)
K.J. Choi (1.309 sg:TPC vs. 0.631 sg:total)
Charley Hoffman (1.736 sg:TPC vs. 1.275 sg:total)
Jerry Kelly (1.423 sg:TPC vs. 0.966 sg:total)
Billy Horschel (1.716 sg:TPC vs. 1.312 sg:total)

Matsuyama’s TPC prowess largely comes from his performance at TPC Scottsdale, another stadium-style TPC course. He’s finished T4 or better there four times, including two wins.

When I think of TPC personally, I think of tough scoring conditions if you spray the ball, which TPC Sawgrass certainly fits that bill. For that reason, it’s no surprise to see stellar ball-strikers like Boo Weekley, Jerry Kelly, and Billy Horschel on the list above.

Keeping your ball in play is huge on these TPC layouts. It’s no surprise to see some golfers that are known for big misses on the anti-specialist side of this angle (Patrick Reed, Dustin Johnson, Jamie Lovemark, Andrew Loupe, Jason Kokrak, Phil Mickelson). Driving it between the field goal posts is not their specialty, but that is often what a TPC layout will demand.

Hot Weather

Earlier in the year I introduced performance in cold weather (sub-70 degress) but this is the first week I’ve seen a correlation with hot weather.

This may become more common now that we’re heading into late Spring and Summer events. For this angle, I am looking at performance in rounds where the temperature was 86 degrees or higher.

The Top 10 Hot Weather Specialists:

Freddie Jacobson (2.117 sg:hot weather vs. 0.792 sg:total)
Si Woo Kim (1.957 sg:hot weather vs. 0.682 sg:total)
Derek Fathauer (1.43 sg:hot weather vs. 0.384 sg:total)
Jason Day (3.709 sg:hot weather vs. 2.761 sg:total)
Jason Kokrak (2.003 sg:hot weather vs. 1.065 sg:total)
Chris Kirk (2.144 sg:hot weather vs. 1.228 sg:total)
Jim Furyk (2.976 sg:hot weather vs. 2.095 sg:total)
Scott Piercy (1.855 sg:hot weather vs. 1.073 sg:total)
Aaron Baddeley (1.492 sg:hot weather vs. 0.714 sg:total)
Justin Thomas (2.392 sg:hot weather vs. 1.708 sg:total)

Earlier in the year we noticed a lot of Aussies performing poorly in cold temperatures. That is because they often thrive in these warmer events. Jason Day, in particular, has won five times in warm weather since 2014. He is one of just five golfers with multiple wins in hot weather over that time.

Kevin Kisner is a name that will likely be popular this week but does NOT grade out well in this department. Since 2014, he is 0.782 shots worse per round in hot weather, compared to his baseline performance. His T2 at this event (2015) came when temps were in the upper 70s and low 80s for the week. I’m not saying he’s a must fade, but if you’re looking for any reason to jump of Kisner again, this would qualify.

Baseline Performance

The goal of this search is to find some golfers with a good course fit. At the same time, we don’t want to rely on golfers that need the week of their lives just to crack the top 25.

The following golfers are struggling with their current form, making them GPP-only options despite their good course fit.

GPP-Only Options:

Tyrone Van Aswegen
Jim Furyk
Billy Horschel
Russell Knox
Troy Merritt
Scott Brown
Vijay Singh

If you want to sprinkle these golfers into your lineups, I think you’ll find a few gems by week’s end. However, their current form is just too spotty to truly trust as a core play.

The Specialists

Matt Kuchar
Brian Harman

Article Image

Our specialist this week is Matt Kuchar!

Kooch is a past winner here (2012) and he crushes Pete Dye designs (+0.934 strokes over his baseline since 2014).

Brian Harman just won last week, so that gives us another angle to ponder. Sometimes golfers have a big letdown after winning. Personally, I think this happens more with first-time winners, so I am willing to keep Harman square on my target list this week.

The Anti-Specialists

The specialists above are positive in all four angles, but which golfers are the opposite and show a poor course fit?

Patrick Reed
Martin Laird
Kevin Streelman
Jason Dufner
John Huh
Brendan Steele

There are a few big names in this list, and a few DFS darlings as well.

First up is Patrick Reed. If there was a prop bet for most balls in the water this week, Reed would have to be near the top of that list.

Jason Dufner has played this event 8 times and found just ONE top 30. He’s playing some good golf this year, but I would hold off this week.

On the whole, I wouldn’t auto fade this list, but I wouldn’t definitely revisit your exposure if someone you like shows up on the anti-specialist list.

Best of luck everyone!

Below is a table with the full specialist data. Any fields with a 0 in them mean the sample size is not large enough. There is a minimum of 25 rounds to qualify for each angle.

Josh Culp (futureoffantasy)

Josh didn’t own a set of golf clubs until after college but his love for the game now grows exponentially. He uses in-depth statistical analysis while trying to avoid the landmines that come with using traditional, outdated PGA stats. He can be found elsewhere writing for Rotoworld and Future of Fantasy. He can be found on twitter @futureoffantasy.
