Searching for a Specialist: The PLAYERS Championship

This week’s PLAYERS Championship is hosted by TPC Sawgrass. It’s not a traditional bomb-and-gouge venue, so let’s dive through the stats to see who might fit the course.

Reviewing last week’s specialists, both earned a paycheck with Hadley grabbing a top 20 while O’Hair faded over the weekend to settle for a T63. Given the carnage of last week, it was a big positive to get both through the cut, but I think we can do even better this week.

For this week’s big event, let’s look at Performance on Bermuda, Performance on Par 72 Courses, Performance in Florida, Performance on Pete Dye Courses, and Performance against Strong Fields.

Here we go …

Performance on Bermuda

TPC Sawgrass is bermuda from tee-to-green and also on the greens.

This will change next year when the event heads back to March which will lead to overseeded conditions. We aren’t worried about next year, though, so let’s see who likes bermuda.

The 10 Bermuda Specialists:

Si Woo Kim (1.629 sg:bermuda vs. 0.786 sg:total)
Bryson DeChambeau (2.162 sg:bermuda vs. 1.404 sg:total)
Kevin Chappell (2.15 sg:bermuda vs. 1.571 sg:total)
Dominic Bozzelli (0.909 sg:bermuda vs. 0.331 sg:total)
Ollie Schniederjans (1.884 sg:bermuda vs. 1.315 sg:total)
Francesco Molinari (2.399 sg:bermuda vs. 1.876 sg:total)
Luke List (2.143 sg:bermuda vs. 1.632 sg:total)
Nick Watney (1.642 sg:bermuda vs. 1.157 sg:total)
Billy Horschel (1.726 sg:bermuda vs. 1.245 sg:total)
Grayson Murray (1.303 sg:bermuda vs. 0.835 sg:total)

Quantity: Looking at weighted strokes gained on bermuda since 2014 we see Justin Thomas easily at the top followed by Webb Simpson, Kevin Kisner, Rory McIlroy, and Brian Harman.

At the bottom of total strokes gained we see Robert Garrigus, D.A. Points, Brice Garnett, Cody Gribble, J.J. Henry, Geoff Ogilvy, Derek Fathauer, and Scott McCarron. Probably best to avoid those names.

Par 72 Courses

TPC Sawgrass is a par 72 that plays to less than 7,200 yards.

With four par 5s on the docket, golfers that can feast on par 5s have a leg up.

The Top 10 Par 72 Specialists:

Danny Willett (1.183 sg:par72 vs. 0.529 sg:total)
Cody Gribble (0.577 sg:par72 vs. -0.034 sg:total)
Rory McIlroy (3.408 sg:par72 vs. 2.827 sg:total)
Matthew Fitzpatrick (1.746 sg:par72 vs. 1.306 sg:total)
Andrew Landry (1.363 sg:par72 vs. 0.929 sg:total)
Marc Leishman (2.352 sg:par72 vs. 1.964 sg:total)
Brooks Koepka (2.417 sg:par72 vs. 2.041 sg:total)
J.J. Spaun (1.295 sg:par72 vs. 0.924 sg:total)
Charley Hoffman (1.984 sg:par72 vs. 1.657 sg:total)
Michael Kim (0.913 sg:par72 vs. 0.593 sg:total)

Quantity: Golfers with the most weighted strokes gained on par 72s (since 2014) are Justin Rose, Hideki Matsuyama, Jason Day, Phil Mickelson, and Rory McIlroy. These are all elite fantasy scorers and a big part of that is their feasting on the par 5s.

There are two golfers that have dipped more than a stroke per round compared to their baseline: Dominic Bozzelli and Ted Potter, Jr.

Performance in Florida

When it comes to Florida golf there are a lot of commonalities between courses.

First, there is generally loads of water everywhere. There are tons of bunkers, wind can become a factor, and bermuda is the common grass type.

The Top 10 Florida Specialists:

Luke List (2.475 sg:florida vs. 1.632 sg:total)
Adam Hadwin (2.235 sg:florida vs. 1.435 sg:total)
Blayne Barber (1.374 sg:florida vs. 0.598 sg:total)
Rory Sabbatini (1.504 sg:florida vs. 0.733 sg:total)
Kyle Stanley (2.018 sg:florida vs. 1.271 sg:total)
Adam Scott (2.843 sg:florida vs. 2.144 sg:total)
Jonas Blixt (1.183 sg:florida vs. 0.56 sg:total)
Francesco Molinari (2.484 sg:florida vs. 1.876 sg:total)
Brendan Steele (2.225 sg:florida vs. 1.694 sg:total)
Kevin Chappell (2.067 sg:florida vs. 1.571 sg:total)

Quantity: Most weighted strokes gained in Florida since 2014 are Adam Scott, Rory McIlroy, Henrik Stenson, Sergio Garcia, and Paul Casey.

An interesting name is Jon Rahm. Last year’s PLAYERS debut are still the only three rounds on the PGA TOUR where he’s pegged it in Florida. He’s said in the past that he’s still getting used to bermuda but he loves the grasses and climate on the West Coast. Rahm remains a wild card in the Sunshine State until he gets some rounds under his belt.

Pete Dye Courses

If you monitor the interview transcripts this week, you’ll hear Pete Dye’s name tossed around repeatedly.

He’s an architect with a reputation for intimidating golfers and forcing them to think, as well.

The Top 10 Pete Dye Specialists:

Ian Poulter (2.251 sg:pete dye vs. 1.473 sg:total)
Chris Kirk (1.953 sg:pete dye vs. 1.238 sg:total)
Russell Knox (2.008 sg:pete dye vs. 1.403 sg:total)
William McGirt (1.725 sg:pete dye vs. 1.168 sg:total)
Louis Oosthuizen (2.334 sg:pete dye vs. 1.85 sg:total)
Cameron Smith (1.711 sg:pete dye vs. 1.244 sg:total)
Branden Grace (2.206 sg:pete dye vs. 1.745 sg:total)
Matt Kuchar (2.621 sg:pete dye vs. 2.162 sg:total)
Daniel Berger (2.242 sg:pete dye vs. 1.805 sg:total)
Russell Henley (1.916 sg:pete dye vs. 1.487 sg:total)

A common theme on this list is the lack of distance. Most Pete Dye Designs don’t REQUIRE distance which allows some of the short knockers to throw their name into the mix.

Quantity: Most weighted strokes gained on Pete Dye tracks since 2014 are Matt Kuchar, Russell Knox, Si Woo Kim, Paul Casey, and Dustin Johnson.

Performance against Strong Fields

THE PLAYERS likes to call itself the Fifth Major for a reason.

Their massive prize pool certainly helps ($10.5 Million up for grabs). This year we have all 50 of the world’s top-ranked golfers in the field.

The Top 10 Strong Field Specialists:

Martin Flores (1.589 sg:strong vs. 0.677 sg:total)
Rory Sabbatini (1.262 sg:strong vs. 0.733 sg:total)
Nick Watney (1.656 sg:strong vs. 1.157 sg:total)
Chesson Hadley (1.407 sg:strong vs. 0.928 sg:total)
Sung Kang (1.386 sg:strong vs. 0.907 sg:total)
Xander Schauffele (1.867 sg:strong vs. 1.4 sg:total)
Harold Varner III (1.194 sg:strong vs. 0.749 sg:total)
Michael Thompson (0.895 sg:strong vs. 0.566 sg:total)
Robert Streb (1.202 sg:strong vs. 0.892 sg:total)
Brian Gay (1.064 sg:strong vs. 0.783 sg:total)

A lot of this list are golfers with lower baselines. It’s important to check with the table at the bottom to see which of the elite golfers also raise their game against the strongest competition.

Quantity: Looking at weighted strokes gained against strong fields since 2014 shows Dustin Johnson, Rickie Fowler, Jordan Spieth, Rory McIlroy, and Paul Casey at the top.

Baseline Performance

We now have a list of 5 golfers that are positive in all five angles.

However, we can filter out Jonas Blixt due to his low long-term baseline performance. He’s also a local here at TPC Sawgrass which does give him a bit of GPP appeal but he’s not someone to trust as a core play.

The Specialists

Francesco Molinari
Lucas Glover
Ian Poulter
Louis Oosthuizen

The specialist this week is Francesco Molinari!

francesco-molinari-550x330

With three straight top 10s at TPC Sawgrass, it probably comes as no surprise that the Italian grades out well in the course history department. His lone PGA TOUR win (unofficial) came at the WGC-HSBC which was played at another short course with water heavily in play. He’s very comfortable having to repeatedly commit to his shots.

Rounding out the specialists are Glover, Poulter, and Oosthy who all posted top 10s here last year. Given their history on similar layouts, it wouldn’t be surprising if two or three of them got right back in contention this year.

Super Simple Specialist Ratings

The goal of this article is to isolate course fit, to see who should outperform their baseline.

However, anyone with common sense knows that baseline talent (and current form) can’t be ignored when handicapping golf.

Combining Baseline Strokes Gained with Current Form and Specialist Rating, we get a Top 20 ranking that looks like this:

Francesco Molinari
Luke List
Rory Mcilroy
Ian Poulter
Emiliano Grillo
Patrick Reed
Bryson DeChambeau
Phil Mickelson
Ryan Moore
Nick Watney
Rickie Fowler
Webb Simpson
Adam Scott
Louis Oosthuizen
Chris Kirk
Jon Rahm
Daniel Berger
Ollie Schniederjans
Henrik Stenson
Kevin Chappell

The Italian is the specialist and also sits at #1 in these simplified ratings! It’s also interesting to see Ollie show up on this list above. He’s been off my radar for a while, so I will keep a close eye this week.

Best of luck everyone!

Below is a table with the full specialist data. Any fields with a 0 in them mean the sample size is not large enough. There is a minimum of 30 rounds to qualify for each angle.

The SG:TOTAL column is a baseline performance measure (since 2014). It is time-weighted so more recent results count for more than finishes from years ago.

HISTORY column is a weighted performance metric based on course history. I’ve made small adjustments for sample sizes but be sure to check on number of course rounds before blindly following this number.

FORM looks at the total strokes gained, adjusted to field strength, over the last 8 weeks (PGA TOUR and European Tour).

Josh Culp (futureoffantasy)

Josh didn’t own a set of golf clubs until after college but his love for the game now grows exponentially. He uses in-depth statistical analysis while trying to avoid the landmines that come with using traditional, outdated PGA stats. He can be found elsewhere writing for Rotoworld and Future of Fantasy. He can be found on twitter @futureoffantasy.
