Searching for a Specialist: Travelers Championship

Article Image

Welcome back to another specialist search.

Last week was full of carnage and the specialists were not spared. Horschel ejected on hole one while Schwartzel “made a few bad decisions” as he put it on Twitter. Kuchar did his part to backdoor a top 20. On the bright side, Koepka had the highest specialist rating of anyone in the field and that turned out lovely.

This week we should have a low-key event, but there is a surprising amount of firepower in the field. Let’s dissect the field to see who should fit the course at TPC River Highlands.

For our search we are going to look at performance on Bentgrass Greens, TPC Courses, Pete Dye Designs, Par 70 Courses, and finish up with a new one, performance in the summer.

Let’s go …

Bentgrass Greens

Much like last week, we have another bentgrass course on tap.

That often means ball-striking rises to the top, because putting on bermuda is a tough skill to master, but putting on bentgrass is usually not as tough for these pros.

The Top 10 Bentgrass Specialists are:

Jonathan Randolph (0.576 sg:bentgrass vs. -0.043 sg:total)
Gonzalo Fernandez-Castano (0.691 sg:bentgrass vs. 0.223 sg:total)
Miguel Angel Carballo (-0.126 sg:bentgrass vs. -0.586 sg:total)
Chad Campbell (1.396 sg:bentgrass vs. 0.97 sg:total)
Kevin Tway (0.532 sg:bentgrass vs. 0.113 sg:total)
Johnson Wagner (0.836 sg:bentgrass vs. 0.44 sg:total)
Billy Hurley III (1.121 sg:bentgrass vs. 0.737 sg:total)
Robert Garrigus (0.787 sg:bentgrass vs. 0.408 sg:total)
Geoff Ogilvy (0.775 sg:bentgrass vs. 0.414 sg:total)
Kyle Reifers (1.022 sg:bentgrass vs. 0.709 sg:total)

A lot of low-baseline golfers on the list above.

Looking for golfers with at least a baseline of 1+ the list would start with: Danny Lee, Brian Harman, Emiliano Grillo, Bud Cauley, and Daniel Berger.

This is the part where I include my auto-fade Lucas Glover on bentgrass message. He is more than 3/4 of a shot worse per round on bentgrass compared to his baseline performance.

Performance on TPC Courses

The TPC Network of courses started with TPC Sawgrass, and lots of the courses in the network play somewhat similarly.

When the PGA TOUR comes out, TPC Courses usually mean birdies in bunches. Let’s see who fares best on other TPC Courses:

The 10 TPC Specialists:

Boo Weekley (1.171 sg:TPC vs. 0.43 sg:total)
Webb Simpson (2.038 sg:TPC vs. 1.398 sg:total)
Rod Pampling (0.848 sg:TPC vs. 0.222 sg:total)
Carl Pettersson (0.807 sg:TPC vs. 0.193 sg:total)
Michael Kim (1.28 sg:TPC vs. 0.714 sg:total)
Kevin Tway (0.623 sg:TPC vs. 0.113 sg:total)
Daniel Berger (2.06 sg:TPC vs. 1.563 sg:total)
Zack Sucher (-0.289 sg:TPC vs. -0.749 sg:total)
Charlie Beljan (-0.276 sg:TPC vs. -0.694 sg:total)
K.J. Choi (1.004 sg:TPC vs. 0.635 sg:total)

Like we did above, let’s limit our baseline to 1+ golfers: Webb Simpson, Daniel Berger, Charley Hoffman, Sung Kang, and Zach Johnson.

On the flip side we have David Lingmerth who has been pretty awful on TPC courses. He’s played 20 events on TPC courses since 2014, and has finished outside the top 40 in 18 of those starts. This isn’t a small sample size, so I am just fine avoiding him this week.

Pete Dye Designs

TPC River Highlands is one of five Pete Dye courses the PGA TOUR uses on an annual basis.

Some golfers don’t give a hoot about who designed the course, but judging from past interviews, there are definitely golfers that like or dislike particular architects based on their design trends.

The Top 10 Pete Dye Specialists:

Rory Sabbatini (1.328 sg:pete dye vs. 0.393 sg:total)
Luke Donald (1.92 sg:pete dye vs. 1.135 sg:total)
Boo Weekley (1.155 sg:pete dye vs. 0.43 sg:total)
Ken Duke (0.595 sg:pete dye vs. -0.049 sg:total)
Jhonattan Vegas (1.381 sg:pete dye vs. 0.739 sg:total)
Seung-yul Noh (1.364 sg:pete dye vs. 0.723 sg:total)
K.J. Choi (1.272 sg:pete dye vs. 0.635 sg:total)
Retief Goosen (1.241 sg:pete dye vs. 0.642 sg:total)
Carl Pettersson (0.717 sg:pete dye vs. 0.193 sg:total)
Paul Casey (2.515 sg:pete dye vs. 1.993 sg:total)

Pete Dye usually tries to put golfers on a level playing field off the tee, testing golfers more on approach. In that regard, it’s no surprise to see Paul Casey shine since his iron play is the strength of his game.

Tony Finau is someone who grades out on the opposite side of the spectrum. He’s played nine events on Dye Designs and five of those resulted in finishes outside the top 65. Luckily, that is a smaller sample size and his two starts at this event have both gone for T25 finishes.

Par 70 Courses

When par 70s come around, we know golfers will have just two par 5s to score on. That puts an emphasis on par-4 scoring and also highlights any par-3 blemishes since it’s harder to make up ground after a big number.

Golfers that don’t rely on par 5s and perform better on par 70s include the following…

The Top 10 Par 70 Specialists:

Jason Day (3.369 sg:par70 vs. 2.717 sg:total)
David Lingmerth (1.362 sg:par70 vs. 0.853 sg:total)
Brett Stegmaier (0.575 sg:par70 vs. 0.083 sg:total)
Chez Reavie (1.539 sg:par70 vs. 1.049 sg:total)
Brian Gay (0.621 sg:par70 vs. 0.148 sg:total)
Tyrone Van Aswegen (0.645 sg:par70 vs. 0.226 sg:total)
Shawn Stefani (1.228 sg:par70 vs. 0.831 sg:total)
Charlie Beljan (-0.303 sg:par70 vs. -0.694 sg:total)
Webb Simpson (1.785 sg:par70 vs. 1.398 sg:total)
Jim Furyk (2.432 sg:par70 vs. 2.051 sg:total)

Jason Day is a bit surprising at first glance, but then you remember how good he is at par 3s. When Jason Day made the leap to consistency a few years ago, he credited his change of mindset for how he played par 3s. The Aussie started to aim for the middle of every green when it came to playing par 3s and his performance skyrocketed. Without the blowups on par 3s, it makes a bit of sense that Day would play better on par 70s.

Smylie Kaufman is near the bottom of this list, and that makes a lot of sense. He is someone that crushes the ball, and relies on par-5 scoring quite a bit. No thanks.

Summertime Specialists

Earlier in the year, we had a comment on one of these specialist articles that recommend I break down performance base on time of the year. I’ve started to do that and found some nice correlation this week with golfers that start to play better in the summer.

It could be due to efficient scheduling that keeps them fresh in the summer or it could be the heat (or lack of cold morning rounds). It could even be partially due to more bentgrass courses being played. Let’s see who ups their game when summer rolls around.

The Top 10 Summer Specialists:

Johnson Wagner (1.173 sg:summer vs. 0.44 sg:total)
Carl Pettersson (0.819 sg:summer vs. 0.193 sg:total)
Stuart Appleby (1.007 sg:summer vs. 0.401 sg:total)
Steve Wheatcroft (0.993 sg:summer vs. 0.399 sg:total)
Gonzalo Fernandez-Castano (0.81 sg:summer vs. 0.223 sg:total)
Emiliano Grillo (2.105 sg:summer vs. 1.527 sg:total)
Jason Day (3.276 sg:summer vs. 2.717 sg:total)
Jim Furyk (2.567 sg:summer vs. 2.051 sg:total)
Nick Watney (1.443 sg:summer vs. 0.933 sg:total)
Geoff Ogilvy (0.923 sg:summer vs. 0.414 sg:total)

Talk about elite for Jason Day! He is on the record saying he plays better when the weather warms up. Perhaps he is ready to return to the winner’s circle soon. He will need to remember how to hit an iron before he does that, though.

Matt Every and Lucas Glover are both near the bottom of this list, and they both grade out as bermuda-only golfers. They do most of their work during the Florida Swing or some of the smaller events played in the South. That is not what we have on hand this week.

Baseline Performance

In our search for a specialist, we want to find a good course fit. At the same time, we don’t want to rely on a career-week just to find a top 30. Let’s remove any golfers that fall below the average baseline performance for this week’s field:

Morgan Hoffmann
Vijay Singh
Spencer Levin
Carl Pettersson
J.J. Henry

These would be the GPP-Only Specialists, with Morgan Hoffmann being the most interesting in my eyes. He is far from consistent but he does have nine top 10s on his career resume, including a backdoor top 10 at this event in 2013.

The Specialists

Jim Furyk
Chad Campbell
Brian Harman
Billy Hurley III
Robert Streb

Our specialist this week is Jim Furyk!

The guy who shot a 58 here last year grades out as a good course fit; who woulda thunk it?

Furyk would have fallen into the GPP-only section before last week when he finally snapped out of six-cut slump. Still a bit of risk, but the course is right up his alley. Would be a great venue to build on that momentum from Erin Hills.

Speaking of Erin Hills, Brian Harman just feasted there. That was a bit of uncharted water for the lefty who led after R3 last week. Previously his best position heading into the final round of a major was T23. Could be mentally drained, but if he’s not than TPC River Highlands presents a great course fit for him.

Lastly I will point out Robert Streb and what we are dealing with here. Streb had a breakout season in 2015 but hasn’t had the same consistency since. For this year, it’s all about the flat stick. Streb has lost strokes putting in 11 of his last 13 starts. There is some hope since the numbers show he’s good on bentgrass, but I’m also preparing myself for a major letdown on the greens.

The Anti-Specialists

The specialists above are positive in all five angles, but which golfers are the opposite and show a poor course fit?

Martin Laird
Jim Herman
Jonas Blixt
Kevin Streelman
Kevin Na

Last week we had a disaster here, as Hideki Matsuyama headlined the anti-specialists before going on to post a runner-up finish at Erin Hills. There will be times when golfers defy course fit, but overall these anti-specialists have struggled to find the top 20.

It’s really hard to find an anti-specialists with good course history, but Kevin Streelman (kind of) provides that. He is a past winner at TPC River Highlands, but if you look at all the stats and trends, he is the major outlier in terms of golfer profiles before winning here. I wouldn’t bank on a repeat of success here.

Best of luck everyone!

Below is a table with the full specialist data. Any fields with a 0 in them mean the sample size is not large enough. There is a minimum of 25 rounds to qualify for each angle.

Josh Culp (futureoffantasy)

Josh didn’t own a set of golf clubs until after college but his love for the game now grows exponentially. He uses in-depth statistical analysis while trying to avoid the landmines that come with using traditional, outdated PGA stats. He can be found elsewhere writing for Rotoworld and Future of Fantasy. He can be found on twitter @futureoffantasy.
