Searching for a Specialist: Travelers Championship
Returning to some normalcy on the PGA TOUR, we head back to a setup that won’t keep these golfers up at night as they take on TPC River Highlands for the Travelers Championship.
Last week our specialists went 1-for-2 with Jordan Spieth being the big whiff (had to give us hope too with a late rally on Friday before dropping shots on his last two holes). Given the weather situation, he would have actually been in prime position to make a Saturday move. Grace did his job securing a top 25. Mr. Koepka was also #1 in Raw Specialist Rating which turned out superb, even if he wasn’t positive in all five course-fit angles.
This week for the Travelers we will peek at performance on Bentgrass/Poa Greens, performance on Short Courses, performance on Easy-to-Hit Fairways, and finish with performance on Par 70 Courses.
Here we go …
Bentgrass or Poa Annua Greens
These greens here at TPC River Highlands are listed as Bentgrass/Poa Annua.
Some years the poa annua is more prevalent and the golfers talk about it more. Other times, the bentgrass is more dominant.
Rather than speculating which will be dominant this week, we can look at performance on both green types, since they are so closely related anyway.
The 10 Bent/Poa Specialists:
Steve Marino (0.655 sg:bent/poa vs. 0.046 sg:total)
Smylie Kaufman (0.223 sg:bent/poa vs. -0.233 sg:total)
Brandon Harkins (1.614 sg:bent/poa vs. 1.238 sg:total)
Derek Fathauer (0.575 sg:bent/poa vs. 0.229 sg:total)
Padraig Harrington (0.688 sg:bent/poa vs. 0.347 sg:total)
Robert Garrigus (1.032 sg:bent/poa vs. 0.705 sg:total)
Jon Curran (0.672 sg:bent/poa vs. 0.351 sg:total)
Brooks Koepka (2.431 sg:bent/poa vs. 2.135 sg:total)
Patrick Rodgers (1.112 sg:bent/poa vs. 0.825 sg:total)
Mackenzie Hughes (0.963 sg:bent/poa vs. 0.682 sg:total)
Quantity: The golfers that have the most strokes gained on bent/poa since 2014 are Jordan Spieth, Jason Day, Patrick Reed, Paul Casey, and Marc Leishman.
A lot of the skill here is familiarity. If you grew up or spent a lot of time in a cool-weather region then putting on bent or poa is probably second nature to you.
At the bottom, we have J.J. Spaun and Nicholas Lindheim. Spaun remains a bit of a mystery since he has Cali ties, I would have pegged him for a poa annua specialists. However, he’s done a large chunk of his damage on bermudagrass greens. Something to keep an eye on as his career progresses.
Performance on Short Courses
TPC River Highlands is just 6,841 yards on the scorecard.
Pebble Beach is the only annual stop that is shorter.
This course is loaded with mid-range par 4s which allows most of the field to have short irons or wedges into a lot of greens.
The Top 10 Short Course Specialists:
Andrew Landry (1.984 sg:short vs. 0.826 sg:total)
Ted Potter, Jr. (1.802 sg:short vs. 0.661 sg:total)
Anirban Lahiri (1.841 sg:short vs. 0.96 sg:total)
Martin Piller (0.958 sg:short vs. 0.12 sg:total)
J.J. Spaun (1.622 sg:short vs. 0.941 sg:total)
Rob Oppenheim (0.944 sg:short vs. 0.265 sg:total)
Patton Kizzire (1.503 sg:short vs. 0.824 sg:total)
Patrick Rodgers (1.504 sg:short vs. 0.825 sg:total)
Brice Garnett (1.103 sg:short vs. 0.445 sg:total)
Smylie Kaufman (0.322 sg:short vs. -0.233 sg:total)
Quantity: Golfers with the most weighted strokes gained on short courses since 2014 are Brian Harman, Justin Thomas, Jordan Spieth, Brendan Steele, and Pat Perez.
Most of the top-10 list above would be considered plodders or grinders. There are a few exceptions like Patrick Rodgers and Smylie Kaufman who pound it out there with the best of them. Still, distance is usually not a requirement on these short layouts.
We just saw Brooksy Kupcake feist on a lengthy Shinnecock Hills Golf Club and he won at Erin Hills last year, one of the longer layouts on TOUR. It’s no surprise then to see him near the bottom of this angle.
Easy-to-Hit Fairways
Since 2010 the field has averaged over 68 percent of fairways hit at TPC River Highlands. That’s a very high clip.
When fairways are easy to hit that typically means that golfers are clubbing down to less-than-driver or the fairways are very generous.
It’s a little of both here at River Highlands as golfers don’t need to hit the big stick that and the fairways are generous (until you start getting out past the 300-yard mark).
With fairways that tighten at the 325 mark, golfers are perfectly content hitting 3-woods. Since the course is so short, they will still have short irons into most of the greens.
The Top 10 Easy Fairway Specialists:
Steve Marino (0.756 sg:easy fairways vs. 0.046 sg:total)
Nicholas Lindheim (0.837 sg:easy fairways vs. 0.128 sg:total)
Kelly Kraft (0.966 sg:easy fairways vs. 0.373 sg:total)
Russell Henley (2.034 sg:easy fairways vs. 1.491 sg:total)
Patrick Reed (2.495 sg:easy fairways vs. 1.957 sg:total)
Patrick Rodgers (1.355 sg:easy fairways vs. 0.825 sg:total)
Xander Schauffele (1.954 sg:easy fairways vs. 1.428 sg:total)
Geoff Ogilvy (0.877 sg:easy fairways vs. 0.356 sg:total)
Martin Flores (1.171 sg:easy fairways vs. 0.65 sg:total)
Rob Oppenheim (0.742 sg:easy fairways vs. 0.265 sg:total)
Quantity: Most weighted strokes gained on easy-to-hit fairways since 2014 are Jordan Spieth, Patrick Reed, Jason Day, Marc Leishman, and Russell Henley.
Some events with easy-to-hit fairways include the John Deere Classic, Tournament of Champions, Pebble Beach Pro-Am, RSM Classic, and the Greenbrier.
You could consider all of these second-shot courses since golfers will have a heap of approach shots coming from the fairways.
Par 70 Courses
We have another week where the course has just two par 5s.
There is a certain style of golf that works well on these layouts.
The Top 10 Par 70 Specialists:
Xander Schauffele (2.178 sg:par70 vs. 1.428 sg:total)
Joel Dahmen (1.277 sg:par70 vs. 0.637 sg:total)
Dominic Bozzelli (0.862 sg:par70 vs. 0.297 sg:total)
Webb Simpson (2.433 sg:par70 vs. 1.897 sg:total)
David Lingmerth (1.502 sg:par70 vs. 0.991 sg:total)
Danny Lee (1.469 sg:par70 vs. 0.96 sg:total)
Kelly Kraft (0.876 sg:par70 vs. 0.373 sg:total)
Brett Stegmaier (0.643 sg:par70 vs. 0.157 sg:total)
Robert Streb (1.314 sg:par70 vs. 0.856 sg:total)
Geoff Ogilvy (0.808 sg:par70 vs. 0.356 sg:total)
Webb Simpson is the outlier here if you look at par-5 scoring this season. He ranks second on TOUR but everyone else on the list is outside the top 60. In fact, seven of the 10 golfers are ranked outside of the top 140 when it comes to par-5 scoring. It makes a lot of sense that they would prefer to take on par 70s where their par-5 inefficiencies are masked a bit.
Quantity: Most weighted strokes gained on par 70 courses since 2014 are Jordan Spieth, Webb Simpson, Paul Casey, Brooks Koepka, and Daniel Berger.
I pointed out Chesson Hadley as one to swerve last week due to this angle and that still holds true. He’s missed the cut in 16 of his last 24 starts on par 70s. He has 12 top 10s since the start of 2014 and none of them have come on par 70s.
Baseline Performance
We now have a list of nine golfers that are positive in all four angles.
However, there is a heap of golfers that don’t earn the full seal of approval, either due to current form or long-term performance.
Golfers that are a good course fit but also bring some question marks include:
Jim Furyk
Brian Harman
Scott Stallings
David Lingmerth
Jonathan Byrd
Derek Fathauer
Someone like Harman is interesting and his form isn’t THAT horrendous. He finished T34 last week and posted a T14 in Fort Worth. The red mark on his form line are rounds of 80 and 81 at THE PLAYERS and Wells Fargo Championship, respectively.
Jim Furyk is also a great fit, heck he shot 58 here just a few years ago. However, his season-long form is just not that exciting.
The Specialist
C.T. Pan
Jordan Spieth
Brandt Snedeker
The specialist this week is C.T. Pan!
Well, how about that? The University of Washington product is making his specialist debut. With so much experience in the Pacific Northwest, it’s no surprise to see him shine on bentgrass and poa annua surfaces.
If we look at his putting splits in particular, he loses nearly 2/5 of a strokes putting per round on bermuda but he’s positive on both bentgrass and poa annua surfaces.
He’s also not a long hitter so a short course like TPC River Highlands is exactly what he needs in order to finally have his breakout week.
Second on the list is Jordan Spieth who will be incredibly unpopular this week. Especially after last week where he also graded out as a specialist. Another par 70 on bent/poa greens so Spieth still looks good. In fact, when he was making his debut here last year, his caddie told him that TPC River Highlands was tailormade for him….then he went on to win.
Last we have Brandt Snedeker, the king of poa annua. He finally flashed some upside in Memphis and was also flirting with the top of the board last week before a slow fade into mediocrity. Sneds has finished T14 or better in each of his last three visits here.
Anti-Specialists
We’ve identified the golfers that grade out positive in all four course-fit angles, but who does the opposite?
Chesson Hadley
John Huh
Sam Saunders
Luke List
Aaron Baddeley
Seamus Power
Nick Watney
When you look at most of these names on the table below you can start to build a case against most of these names. Hadley has been horrendous on par 70s like we already pointed out.
Luke List has been much worse on bent/poa and par 70s but he wouldn’t be a full fade unless you were already on the fence.
Nick Watney may be negative in all four angles, but none of his columns are lower than -0.247 (par 70s). His overall specialist rating is -0.113 which isn’t even half a stroke lost over four rounds.
These are all things to consider before you blindly fade. The fractions are often small, so it’s best to use these as tiebreakers.
Super Simple Specialist Ratings
The goal of this article is to isolate course fit, to see who should outperform their baseline.
However, anyone with common sense knows that baseline talent (and current form) can’t be ignored when handicapping golf.
Combining Baseline Strokes Gained with Current Form and Specialist Rating, we get a Top 20 ranking that looks like this:
Patrick Reed
Jordan Spieth
Xander Schauffele
Brooks Koepka
Webb Simpson
Paul Casey
Emiliano Grillo
C.T. Pan
Russell Knox
Russell Henley
Brandt Snedeker
Daniel Berger
Patrick Rodgers
Bill Haas
Anirban Lahiri
Chez Reavie
Ted Potter, Jr.
Marc Leishman
Justin Thomas
Austin Cook
Last week it was Koepka at #1 so let’s see if Patrick Reed can follow in his footsteps.
Our main specialist, C.T. Pan, checks in at #8 which is very likely the highest he’s ever been on this list.
The last two champs crack the list (Spieth and Knox) but two-time Travelers champ Bubba Watson sits at 67th. While his fantasy scoring makes him juicy as always, it’s worth noting that his two wins here came when the field was much more diluted. Obviously, this event means a lot to him though, so we can’t rule out another run into contention.
Lastly, I will include the missing fifth angle which is the performance on Pete Dye Designs. It doesn’t crack the official list due to sample size problems but here are the 10 names at the top of that list who all improve half a stroke over their baseline when pegging it at a Pete Dye track.
Si Woo Kim (2.686 sg:pete dye vs. 0.834 sg:total)
Cameron Tringale (1.668 sg:pete dye vs. 0.621 sg:total)
Ken Duke (0.564 sg:pete dye vs. -0.137 sg:total)
Chesson Hadley (1.729 sg:pete dye vs. 1.028 sg:total)
Brice Garnett (1.089 sg:pete dye vs. 0.445 sg:total)
Webb Simpson (2.485 sg:pete dye vs. 1.897 sg:total)
Rory Sabbatini (1.416 sg:pete dye vs. 0.851 sg:total)
Matt Every (0.151 sg:pete dye vs. -0.371 sg:total)
Brooks Koepka (2.631 sg:pete dye vs. 2.135 sg:total)
Retief Goosen (1.274 sg:pete dye vs. 0.78 sg:total)
Best of luck everyone!
Below is a table with the full specialist data. Any fields with a 0 in them mean the sample size is not large enough. There is a minimum of 30 rounds to qualify for each angle.
The SG:TOTAL column is a baseline performance measure (since 2014). It is time-weighted so more recent results count for more than finishes from years ago.
HISTORY column is a weighted performance metric based on course history. I’ve made small adjustments for sample sizes but be sure to check on number of course rounds before blindly following this number.
FORM looks at the total strokes gained, adjusted to field strength, over the last 8 weeks (PGA TOUR and European Tour).
