Searching for a Specialist: U.S. Open

Article Image

Welcome back to the search for a specialist.

Last week we saw Camilo Villegas and Phil Mickelson grade out as the top specialists. Villegas missed the cut on the number while Lefty was right in the thick of things before a triple bogey dropped him out of the lead. Still a good week for Mickelson, but a good week out of Villegas would have been much juicier.

This week we head to Wisconsin for the 117th U.S. Open. Erin Hills is a new course in terms of hosting a PGA TOUR event, so leaning on this course fit exercise might prove more beneficial than usual.

For Erin Hills Golf Course we are going to look at Performance on Bentgrass Greens, Majors, Links-Style Courses, Hard Courses, and Driver-Heavy Courses.

Let’s go …

Bentgrass Greens

With bentgrass greens on tap, we can target ball-striking a little more than usual. Not that targeting ball-strikers is ever a bad idea.

However, a lot of the traditionally great putters do their best work on bermuda. Let’s just take a look and see who pops.

The Top 10 Bentgrass Specialists are:

Jonathan Randolph (0.476 sg:bentgrass vs. -0.099 sg:total)
Ernie Els (1.011 sg:bentgrass vs. 0.439 sg:total)
Michael Putnam (0.971 sg:bentgrass vs. 0.408 sg:total)
Matthew Fitzpatrick (1.678 sg:bentgrass vs. 1.212 sg:total)
Andres Romero (0.69 sg:bentgrass vs. 0.275 sg:total)
Rickie Fowler (2.477 sg:bentgrass vs. 2.107 sg:total)
Russell Henley (1.511 sg:bentgrass vs. 1.19 sg:total)
Emiliano Grillo (1.856 sg:bentgrass vs. 1.566 sg:total)
Angel Cabrera (0.537 sg:bentgrass vs. 0.251 sg:total)
Martin Kaymer (1.722 sg:bentgrass vs. 1.44 sg:total)

Fitzpatrick and Henley are both standout putters, but the rest of this bunch generally leans on their ball-striking. It makes sense that Fitzpatrick would prefer bentgrass since that is what he generally sees when teeing it up in the European continent.

This is the part where I include my auto-fade Lucas Glover on bentgrass message. He is more than 3/4 of a shot worse per round on bentgrass compared to his baseline performance.

Performance in Majors

Most of the elite golfers plan their schedules with the idea of peaking for key events.

Major championships definitely fit that bill. Let see who generally rises to the top when they take on the best in the world…

The 10 Major Championship Specialists:

Steve Stricker (2.574 sg:majors vs. 1.628 sg:total)
Brooks Koepka (2.745 sg:majors vs. 1.844 sg:total)
Phil Mickelson (2.777 sg:majors vs. 1.983 sg:total)
Jordan Spieth (3.358 sg:majors vs. 2.583 sg:total)
Justin Rose (3.151 sg:majors vs. 2.418 sg:total)
Branden Grace (2.153 sg:majors vs. 1.444 sg:total)
Louis Oosthuizen (2.276 sg:majors vs. 1.654 sg:total)
Martin Kaymer (2.054 sg:majors vs. 1.44 sg:total)
Charl Schwartzel (2.302 sg:majors vs. 1.722 sg:total)
Angel Cabrera (0.81 sg:majors vs. 0.251 sg:total)

Obviously Phil Mickelson has a huge asterisk next to his name since he is doubtful to tee it up this week. The next in line would be Brandt Snedeker if this list went to 11.

Stricker’s schedule has thinned out over the recent years, but he’s still finished T31 or better in nine of his last 10 appearances in majors.

Bubba Watson may be a surprising name to see at the bottom of this list for some. However, he has just one top 30 over his last 12 starts in majors and that one top 30 was a T21. He is also someone who has struggled on links layouts because he likes to have trees (or any kind of object) to help with his sightlines as he tries to work the ball in crazy ways.

Driver-Heavy Courses

The early reports from Erin Hills suggest that plenty of drivers will be hit. That makes sense given the scorecard reads close to 7,800 yards.

After Rory’s first practice round this week, he said the wide fairways will allow golfers to be aggressive and use a lot of drivers.

Shane Lowry also tweeted out a video of him hitting a drive and said, “plenty of these needed here at Erin Hills this week.”

Golfers that thrive on these type of layouts are usually bombers, but that’s not always the case, so let’s have a look.

The Top 10 Driver-Heavy Specialists:

Shane Lowry (2.29 sg:driver-heavy vs. 1.603 sg:total)
Billy Horschel (1.957 sg:driver-heavy vs. 1.358 sg:total)
Ernie Els (1.035 sg:driver-heavy vs. 0.439 sg:total)
Brandt Snedeker (2.146 sg:driver-heavy vs. 1.603 sg:total)
Harris English (1.757 sg:driver-heavy vs. 1.249 sg:total)
Rickie Fowler (2.601 sg:driver-heavy vs. 2.107 sg:total)
Jon Rahm (2.78 sg:driver-heavy vs. 2.288 sg:total)
Bubba Watson (2.513 sg:driver-heavy vs. 2.092 sg:total)
Webb Simpson (1.776 sg:driver-heavy vs. 1.394 sg:total)
Justin Thomas (2.107 sg:driver-heavy vs. 1.734 sg:total)

Like I said, a lot of big hitters on the list above, as you’d expect to see from a list that checks performance on courses that allow the usage of the big stick.

Someone like Graeme McDowell doesn’t crank it out there too far, and his performance in this category shows. He is nearly 3/4 of a shot worse on driver-heavy courses compared to his baseline.

Steve Stricker is also near the bottom of this angle, as you’d expect but he has the home state narrative going in his favor. Which will win out?

Links-Style Layouts

While the architects want to call this a heartland course, it’s easy to see it shares a lot of attributes with traditional links courses over in Scotland or Ireland.

There are less than 10 trees on the property and no water to find. There is fescue lining the fairway if you get too crooked and tiny, tricky bunkers placed strategically around the property. Sounds just like a links track to me.

The Top 10 Links Specialists:

Branden Grace (2.558 sg:links vs. 1.444 sg:total)
Brooks Koepka (2.813 sg:links vs. 1.844 sg:total)
Martin Kaymer (2.378 sg:links vs. 1.44 sg:total)
Jordan Spieth (3.462 sg:links vs. 2.583 sg:total)
Brandt Snedeker (2.452 sg:links vs. 1.603 sg:total)
Keegan Bradley (2.232 sg:links vs. 1.432 sg:total)
Charl Schwartzel (2.491 sg:links vs. 1.722 sg:total)
Henrik Stenson (3.265 sg:links vs. 2.515 sg:total)
Phil Mickelson (2.689 sg:links vs. 1.983 sg:total)
J.B. Holmes (2.1 sg:links vs. 1.405 sg:total)

Talk about ELITE ball-striking. I guess when you leaves players exposed to the elements, they have to be elite from tee-to-green or have the low stinger in their repertoire.

Charley Hoffman has REALLY struggled on links courses and doesn’t play well in majors outside of Augusta National.

Hard Courses

This week’s course is a par 72 which is unusual for a U.S. Open, but it is still set up by the USGA, which means a TOUGH TRACK.

Some golfers shrivel up at the first sign of struggle. Others thrive on the difficulty of a course.

The Top 10 Hard Course Specialists:

Daniel Summerhays (1.725 sg:hard vs. 1.051 sg:total)
Danny Willett (1.836 sg:hard vs. 1.203 sg:total)
David Lingmerth (1.451 sg:hard vs. 0.824 sg:total)
George Coetzee (1.669 sg:hard vs. 1.049 sg:total)
Steve Stricker (2.216 sg:hard vs. 1.628 sg:total)
Bryson DeChambeau (1.219 sg:hard vs. 0.639 sg:total)
Angel Cabrera (0.795 sg:hard vs. 0.251 sg:total)
Dustin Johnson (3.158 sg:hard vs. 2.64 sg:total)
Lee Westwood (1.941 sg:hard vs. 1.442 sg:total)
William McGirt (1.579 sg:hard vs. 1.086 sg:total)

Dustin Johnson (and Jordan Spieth) both gain 3+ strokes over a TOUR-average golfer when it comes to playing on tough courses. I would expect both of them to be right in the mix come Sunday.

On the flip side, Hideki Matsuyama hasn’t found the right strategy for tackling tough tracks. He gets visibly upset when he hits a 5-iron outside of 20 feet, so perhaps that mentality doesn’t work the best as the course gets tougher. I expect him to mature and fix this problem eventually, but for now I will let others deal with him.

The Specialists

Charl Schwartzel
Billy Horschel
Matt Kuchar

Article Image

Our specialist this week is Charl Schwartzel!

Schwartzel was right in the mix last week, but just like Mickelson, one terrible hole ruined his chances to win. Still, he arrives fresh off a much-needed close call and the course looks to suit for a second straight week.

Billy Horschel is someone who can really get on a roll with his driver. He won the Byron Nelson this year and nearly backdoored a win last week, both venues that rely on steady and confident driving of the golf ball.

Lastly, Matt Kuchar is the ultimate grinder. Of course he grades out well on a tough track that is exposed to the elements.

As you can tell from the table below, you don’t have to be a perfect student to have a great course fit. Golfers like Brooks Koepka and Branden Grace just barely miss the mark but grade out much better than their week-to-week baseline.

The Anti-Specialists

The specialists above are positive in all five angles, but which golfers are the opposite and show a poor course fit?

Hideki Matsuyama
Jason Dufner

We have a few big names in the anti-specialist corner this week. Dufner is playing with a lot of confidence right now, but he doesn’t have the length to make up for mistakes on a driver-heavy course like this.

I already mentioned Matsuyama’s mental game and how it doesn’t play well on tough tracks. I also think Matsuyama will eventually turn this weakness into a strength but until the numbers start to sway, I will be fine keeping him off my card on difficult courses.

Best of luck everyone!

Below is a table with the full specialist data. Any fields with a 0 in them mean the sample size is not large enough. There is a minimum of 25 rounds to qualify for each angle.

Josh Culp (futureoffantasy)

Josh didn’t own a set of golf clubs until after college but his love for the game now grows exponentially. He uses in-depth statistical analysis while trying to avoid the landmines that come with using traditional, outdated PGA stats. He can be found elsewhere writing for Rotoworld and Future of Fantasy. He can be found on twitter @futureoffantasy.
