Searching for a Specialist: U.S. Open

Taking on Shinnecock Hills Golf Club will be a true battle that tests all facets of your game. This course is a brute so let’s see who has the chops to contend here.

Last week our specialists went 1-for-2 with the back-to-back champ, Daniel Berger, missing the cut on the number. Some room for improvement at Shinnecock Hills.

This week for the U.S. Open we will look at performance on Poa Annua Greens, performance in Majors, performance on Links-Style Courses, performance on Par 70s, and performance on Hard Courses.

Here we go …

Performance on Poa Annua

Before the week started I had intended to use the mix of poa annua and bentgrass performance since they are so closely related and there was no definitive word on whether these greens were still poa.

However, early pressers have made it clear that we are dealing with poa annua predominantly, much like we see on the West Coast.

Tiger said this, “This is what I basically grew up on out there on the West Coast. Poa gets bumpy, and it requires a lot of patience. A lot of times you can hit great putts on poa, and it doesn’t go in. The key is to hit putts solid and see what happens.”

Spieth said this, “patience is very important, knowing that everybody’s going to have that on any kind of poa annua greens or very fast greens because you have to trust playing ball putts outside of holes from such a short distance, like you have to at Augusta, and see what happens.”

Lastly, Jason Day is said to be using his “West Coast setup” in terms of loft on his putter and said this in his pre-tourney presser, “like I said before, the playing surfaces aren’t really clean on the putting greens, and they’ve been bumping a lot because of the poa annua. So you have to be very precise with your read, but also sometimes get a little bit lucky with some of the bounces as well.”

The 10 Poa Annua Specialists:

Scott Stallings (1.734 sg:poa vs. 0.762 sg:total)
Bubba Watson (2.671 sg:poa vs. 1.846 sg:total)
Jhonattan Vegas (1.765 sg:poa vs. 0.978 sg:total)
Patrick Rodgers (1.488 sg:poa vs. 0.825 sg:total)
Cameron Smith (1.692 sg:poa vs. 1.096 sg:total)
Dustin Johnson (3.621 sg:poa vs. 3.047 sg:total)
Justin Thomas (2.841 sg:poa vs. 2.329 sg:total)
Chesson Hadley (1.487 sg:poa vs. 1.028 sg:total)
Scott Piercy (1.548 sg:poa vs. 1.098 sg:total)
Tony Finau (2.28 sg:poa vs. 1.846 sg:total)

Quantity: At the top of total strokes gained on poa since 2014 we have Dustin Johnson (by a long shot) then Phil Mickelson, Jordan Spieth, Jason Day, and Tony Finau.

The golfers from the top-10 list above who are also 2+ strokes gained per round on poa are the ones that pop off the page the most (Bubba, DJ, JT, Finau).

One of the most surprising names on this list is Rickie Fowler who has performed more than a shot worse per round on poa when compared to his baseline. It’s surprising since he’s a Cali native so poa annua greens should have been the norm growing up. However, the results just aren’t there. He’s missed the cut in 8 of his last 13 starts on poa! If you blend in regular bentgrass performance this week then Fowler does become more attractive but still brings some question marks that I will enjoy seeing how it plays out.

Performance in Majors

There is something to be said about upping your game for the big events.

For some (ZJ and Stricker) that means playing well at the Fifth Major (John Deere Classic).

For others, that means they do everything possible to peak during major-championship weeks. Some do this a lot better than others.

The Top 10 Majors Specialists:

Brooks Koepka (3.313 sg:majors vs. 2.135 sg:total)
Jordan Spieth (3.567 sg:majors vs. 2.837 sg:total)
Brandt Snedeker (2.414 sg:majors vs. 1.765 sg:total)
Patrick Reed (2.602 sg:majors vs. 1.957 sg:total)
Steve Stricker (2.49 sg:majors vs. 1.905 sg:total)
Martin Kaymer (1.838 sg:majors vs. 1.313 sg:total)
Louis Oosthuizen (2.386 sg:majors vs. 1.871 sg:total)
Hideki Matsuyama (2.86 sg:majors vs. 2.376 sg:total)
Danny Willett (0.888 sg:majors vs. 0.421 sg:total)
Matt Kuchar (2.602 sg:majors vs. 2.164 sg:total)

Quantity: Golfers with the most weighted strokes gained in majors since 2014 are Jordan Spieth, Rory McIlroy, Henrik Stenson, Jason Day, and Brooks Koepka.

Ahead of the Masters, I pointed out that Patrick Reed graded out positively in majors (when adjusting for field strength) despite his poor reputation in majors. That turned out well and now he’s near the top on this list.

On the flip side, we see Emiliano Grillo and Gary Woodland near the bottom. I think Grillo is due to turn this number around as he gets more comfortable in these big events.

Links-Style Courses

There aren’t a ton of links-style layouts on the annual schedule, but this angle proves worthy almost every time.

The addition of Trinity Forest should help boost some of these samples, but for now we are working mostly off The Open Championship and other majors played on links-style layouts. Let’s see who shines…

The Top 10 Links Specialists:

Brooks Koepka (3.749 sg:links vs. 2.135 sg:total)
Brandt Snedeker (2.704 sg:links vs. 1.765 sg:total)
Matt Jones (1.724 sg:links vs. 0.871 sg:total)
Branden Grace (2.585 sg:links vs. 1.79 sg:total)
Martin Kaymer (2.103 sg:links vs. 1.313 sg:total)
Phil Mickelson (2.808 sg:links vs. 2.218 sg:total)
Henrik Stenson (3.306 sg:links vs. 2.777 sg:total)
Zach Johnson (2.305 sg:links vs. 1.789 sg:total)
Steve Stricker (2.359 sg:links vs. 1.905 sg:total)
Jordan Spieth (3.279 sg:links vs. 2.837 sg:total)

Quantity: Most weighted strokes gained against links since 2014 are Jordan Spieth, Dustin Johnson, Jason Day, Brandt Snedeker, and Patrick Reed.

Koepka won last year on a links Erin Hills layout. Overall, he’s finished top 20 in six of his last seven starts on links-style courses, five of those doubling as top 10s. Standout stuff

Near the bottom, we have a surprising name, Graeme McDowell. He missed the cut at Trinity Forest this year. He missed the cut at the Pebble Beach Pro-Am. He missed the cut last year at Erin Hills. He finished T63 last year at The Open and also added an MC at the 2015 PGA (Whistling Straits). You have to go back to 2014 to find the last time he’s posted a top 40 on a links layout (PGA TOUR events only).

Par 70 Courses

With a par 70 on hand, we have just two par 5s this week.

That means the big hitters can’t rely on these easy scoring holes to rack up birdies and eagles. Adding to the difficulty, they are both over 585 yards. They won’t even be easy birdie holes.

When looking at this angle we generally pinpoint golfers that don’t rely on the par 5s to make their hay.

The Top 10 Par 70 Specialists:

Martin Kaymer (1.919 sg:par70 vs. 1.313 sg:total)
Xander Schauffele (2.017 sg:par70 vs. 1.428 sg:total)
Webb Simpson (2.366 sg:par70 vs. 1.897 sg:total)
Michael Putnam (0.882 sg:par70 vs. 0.454 sg:total)
Shane Lowry (1.882 sg:par70 vs. 1.486 sg:total)
Matt Kuchar (2.554 sg:par70 vs. 2.164 sg:total)
Jim Furyk (1.961 sg:par70 vs. 1.58 sg:total)
Henrik Stenson (3.129 sg:par70 vs. 2.777 sg:total)
Chez Reavie (1.826 sg:par70 vs. 1.513 sg:total)
Branden Grace (2.097 sg:par70 vs. 1.79 sg:total)

This list is loaded with straight shooters that you might consider “plodders” or “grinders.”

Quantity: Most weighted strokes gained on par 70 courses since 2014 are Jordan Spieth, Webb Simpson, Paul Casey, Matt Kuchar, Brooks Koepka.

At the bottom of the list, we have Chesson Hadley, who also ranks 27th on TOUR this season in Par 5 Scoring. He ranks 6th on TOUR in total eagles. That that tool potentially weakened and him making his tournament debut, he might be one to swerve this week, despite the strong fantasy scoring stats this season.

Hard Courses

Some guys like it when the winning score stays in single digits.

Others like it when the course is soft and it leads to target practice, needing 20+ under to just have a chance at contending.

We want the former this week since Shinnecock Hills is one of the toughest courses in the U.S. Open rota.

The Top 10 Hard Course Specialists:

Danny Willett (1.262 sg:hard vs. 0.421 sg:total)
Bubba Watson (2.515 sg:hard vs. 1.846 sg:total)
Andrew Johnston (1.156 sg:hard vs. 0.55 sg:total)
Steve Stricker (2.376 sg:hard vs. 1.905 sg:total)
Louis Oosthuizen (2.339 sg:hard vs. 1.871 sg:total)
Aaron Baddeley (1.358 sg:hard vs. 0.892 sg:total)
Matt Jones (1.322 sg:hard vs. 0.871 sg:total)
Brooks Koepka (2.581 sg:hard vs. 2.135 sg:total)
Jordan Spieth (3.25 sg:hard vs. 2.837 sg:total)
Matt Kuchar (2.515 sg:hard vs. 2.164 sg:total)

Quantity: Most weighted strokes gained on Hard Courses since 2014 are Jordan Spieth, Dustin Johnson, Paul Casey, Matt Kuchar, and Jason Day.

If you tried to find one skillset that correlates well here then it may be tough to find. For example, you have a few Englishman in Willett and Beef. Is that the key? Or do Aussies like it tough (Badds and Jones)? Or maybe you need to be a big-hitting American (Bubba and Brooks)? No, you probably just need to be an elite course manager (Spieth and Kuchar). Basically what that tells me is that playing well on tough courses is just as much mental as it is physical.

Baseline Performance

We now have a list of 3 golfers that are positive in all five angles.

However, one of them doesn’t check the box in terms of form. That would be Jim Furyk. He’s played well on these tough, links-style layouts but his 2018 form is too far off the tracks to fully trust.

The Specialist

Jordan Spieth
Branden Grace

The specialist this week is Jordan Spieth!

Article Image

The Texan arrives with mediocre form by his standards but he’s gained 4.5+ strokes tee-to-green in six of his last eight ShotLink starts.

He just happens to have hit the coldest stretch of putting in his career. Now he’ll head back to poa annua greens which have historically led to his best putting performances.

During his press conference this week he said, “I feel like my game is in the best shape it’s been in a long time, including last year. And my results don’t necessarily speak towards that, but I feel that way, and so I’ll stick with the process, and they’ll surely come at some point.”

Combine that confidence with his course fit and we could have a nice contrarian star this week as others flock to more in-form starts like DJ, Rory, JT, Day, or Rose.

The second specialist on the list is Branden Grace.

The South African has eight career finishes of T6 or better and FIVE of those have come in major championships. Another one of them came at this year’s Byron Nelson which was played on a links course. He even won at Harbour Town Golf Links. That doesn’t get counted in the links stats I track but there must be something about that word that just brings out the best in him.

Super Simple Specialist Ratings

The goal of this article is to isolate course fit, to see who should outperform their baseline.

However, anyone with common sense knows that baseline talent (and current form) can’t be ignored when handicapping golf.

Combining Baseline Strokes Gained with Current Form and Specialist Rating, we get a Top 20 ranking that looks like this:

Brooks Koepka
Jason Day
Dustin Johnson
Henrik Stenson
Justin Thomas
Branden Grace
Matt Kuchar
Jordan Spieth
Steve Stricker
Patrick Reed
Phil Mickelson
Brandt Snedeker
Louis Oosthuizen
Tony Finau
Shane Lowry
Jimmy Walker
Jon Rahm
Zach Johnson
Peter Uihlein
Bubba Watson

Spieth checks in lower than I’d expect but his form would be the cause of that.

Stricker and Sneds are two interesting names who don’t have the pop but they always seem to crush it when the USGA sets up a course.

Best of luck everyone!

Below is a table with the full specialist data. Any fields with a 0 in them mean the sample size is not large enough. There is a minimum of 30 rounds to qualify for each angle.

The SG:TOTAL column is a baseline performance measure (since 2014). It is time-weighted so more recent results count for more than finishes from years ago.

HISTORY column is a weighted performance metric based on course history. I’ve made small adjustments for sample sizes but be sure to check on number of course rounds before blindly following this number.

FORM looks at the total strokes gained, adjusted to field strength, over the last 8 weeks (PGA TOUR and European Tour).

Josh Culp (futureoffantasy)

Josh didn’t own a set of golf clubs until after college but his love for the game now grows exponentially. He uses in-depth statistical analysis while trying to avoid the landmines that come with using traditional, outdated PGA stats. He can be found elsewhere writing for Rotoworld and Future of Fantasy. He can be found on twitter @futureoffantasy.
